Hirsch Performance Saab 9-5 at Zurich Auto Show

November 11, 2010 in Saabology

Marcel has very kindly sent through some photos from the Zurich Auto Show.

The car featured is the Hirsch Performance Saab 9-5, fitted with the following:

  • 330hp /430Nm (2.8T V6 XWD)
  • Forged 9×20” aluminium wheels
  • Stainless steel sports exhaust system
  • Brake upgrade (Saab accessory)
  • Lowering spring kit
  • Centre console upgrade
  • Aluminium pedals

Of course, most will be cusious about the upgraded center console, which hirsch have covered with leather. These photos were taken in show conditions, so the lighting’s a little harsh, but you’ll get the idea.

Thanks Marcel!

For those who couldn’t get to Huy, here’s some of what you missed….

Nice work by Ellie to get in nearly all of the photos :-) and once again, and epic job by Etienne from Saablog-in in terms of organising the outing.

Video: Owner review of Saab 9-3 XWD

November 11, 2010 in Saabology

We’re moving offices today, hence computer access is scant.

I’ve checked in to see J-Fan and Eggs have left tips about this series of videos where a new buyer reviews his Saab 9-3 Aero XWD Sport Sedan.

Handles great, very quick, and he’s finding excuses to get out and drive it. Sounds good to me….

On the down side – interior issues.

These are good for those who might be considering a purchase. This guy does his homework pretty well and lays out his reasons for choosing the 9-3 against competitors from Volvo, Audi and Infiniti. He has a few gripes, too, but that’s OK. We all do.

Shaw Saab build showroom billboard

November 11, 2010 in Saabology

I’m a layman when it comes to questions of how to run a business, but even a layman like me can understand that dealer initiative plays a big part in dealer success.

Shaw Saab have taken a plain white wall in their showroom and turned it into a massive, changeable billboard that’s not only beautiful from the inside, but quite visible from the outside.

From Fred Shaw:

I thought you would enjoy these photos. I took a stark and boring white wall in the showroom and added a custom made graphic of the all-new Saab 9-5. It measures an astounding 21’ x 8’! Installed it myself with the help of Shaw Saab Technician Andy Lee and the assistance of numerous employees at different stages.

It took us all day – primarily because we probably measured 17 times before drilling, but it was worth it. It came out absolutely perfect.

The graphic is a full color printed fabric graphic on heavy knit material mounted on a frame made of light-weight aluminum.

It looks absolutely terrific from within and especially outside from the roadway! Had to show the community that we are alive and well and how proud we are of the all-new 9-5. Now that the framing is up, we can change the graphic periodically (i.e. 9-4 launch, 9-5 SportWagon, etc…)

Outstanding work, Fred. It looks absolutely superb.

Saab, websites, advertising and you

November 10, 2010 in Editorial, Saabology

A friend of mine, regular reader and occasional commenter on this site, Nixschel, posted something in comments that I thought was worth posting here on the front page.

Nixschel was commenting with regard to the discussion to SaabUSA’s website now working with the iPad.

The bottom line…. while we argue semantics about what can genuinely be some important issues, we may be missing the most important point completely.

And Saab might be missing it too.

——

I cannot but agree with what has been stated. I saw a press release regarding the new pricing of the 9-3. So I check the website and guess what? [The] old numbers are still there. Takes some explaining, I think. There is a website for the 9-3 in the Netehrlands which I find badly communicated and hard to find.

The reason behind all this is not clear to me. What use of which platform to me is rather irrelevant. I come from the old school of HTML in notepad. I come from the adagio of “it has to be a decent site in any browser”.

I am a MAC user, but I threw out the iPhone as it was a crap thing. I do not want to enter into any wars between soft- and hardware manufacturers. What I do want to see is a decent clean up, some form of a way forward in Saab advertising and websites. There does not seem to be a common goal (with slight deviations based on local tastes and customs).

The connection with the community, which did help in the fight for survival seems to be either forgotten, or is no longer seen as a commodity. That suprises me as there are plenty of studies around that focus on finding the magic ingredient, why did we do what we did when we did it.

In short, I cannot at the moment, find a common goal, I cannot see a real connection between us and the brand. It seems to be fading a tad into the background and that to me isn’t right.

——

I know that Saab are working on global site development and whilst I don’t have any knowledge as to what sort of platform they’re using, I’m confident whoever’s building it for them will have cross-system usability in mind.

The bigger picture that Nixschel mentions is of more concern – the unity of message and the connection with customers. The story doesn’t necessarily need to be told explicitly, but the connection needs to be as strong in a year’s time as it was a year ago.

I just thought Nixschel’s comment was quite a good summary of the total challenge facing Saab in their marketing efforts and wanted to share it here.

Classic Saab advertising – Saab Vs

November 10, 2010 in Saabology

I first posted these on the Trollhattan Saab site back in June 2005.

Seeing we’re having a focus on Saab advertising this month, I thought it’d be worthwhile showing these ads again. They’re favourites for many, combining some interesting stories along with fantastic imagery, occasional humour.

For the owner of a different make of vehicle, they’ll inspire interest. For the owner of a Saab, they inspire a certain amount of pride.

Please enjoy.

WYSIWY.jpg

Saab vs WYSIWYG
What you see is what you get. A rather unimaginative way of looking at the world. Take the Saab 9-5 wagon. On the surface, a cargo carrier. But look under the hood. A turbocharged engine that generates enourmous amounts of torque. The car’s versatility is evident: Cargotracks for securing loads, an optional sliding floor to make loading easier. But what about the torsionally rigid body construction that gives the car handling characteristics similar to a sports sedan? Can you see that?

Plenty more after the jump…..

What do you expect from a Saab ad?

November 10, 2010 in Saabology

The (unofficial) Saab ad competition is going full steam ahead.

We’ve received some fantastic entries and it’s quite obvious that there are some very talented people out there.

I thought it might be worthwhile having a quick discussion as to what makes a good advertisement. That is…. what is it that we’re trying to achieve through this competition? What’s a good ad?

Is it incredibly good visuals?

A great tagline?

Plenty of information, or the ability to say more by writing less?

I’m no ad guru and I like various different types of ads. I guess the bottom line is that it’s got to have at least one very good element that stays with me and makes me think about it after I’ve turned the page, or switched the channel.

What floats your advertising boat?

Saab (unofficial) ad competition prize goes up (again!)

November 10, 2010 in Saabology

UPDATE: Maptun have jumped aboard and offered a $100 gift voucher as well.

That takes the total prize to $850 in value.

——

Just a quick note….

This competition certainly seems to have captured people’s imaginations. Not only is my inbox bursting with entries, but some people are enjoying the Saab (unofficial) ad competition so much that they’re chipping in some extra funds for the prize pool.

My Paypal account received another two donations today, totalling$50 $125, and those two donations take the total prize pool up to $650 in cash (US$) plus a $100 gift voucher courtesy of Dan at State of Nine AND a $100 gift voucher from Maptun.

Here are the entries so far…..

If you want to enter the competition, the instructions are here: Saab (unofficial) ad competition.

Note: The posting of entries will most likely pause next week while I’m in Los Angeles for the LA Auto Show and the unveiling of the production Saab 9-4x.

My advice is to concentrate on quality rather than volume.

BAIC (C60) continues to electrify Saab 9-3

November 10, 2010 in Saabology

The China Car Times have caught an electrified Saab 9-3 lookalike testing in Beijing.

The photos have been ‘shopped to disguise the surroundings. Click.

BAIC-C60-electric-saab4

BAIC-C60-electric-saab1

Beijing Automotive (BAIC) are hoping to have an electric vehicle based on the Saab 9-3 architecture on the market late in 2011. Readers should note that this is BAIC’s own development and not related to the work Saab is doing on electrification, where they’re releasing a test fleet of 70 electric Saabs in Sweden in conjunction with ElectroEngine, or their new joint venture, e-AAM.

BAIC showed what they’re C60 model could look like at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year.

BAIC C60 front

Saab sold technology for the old Saab 9-5 and pre-2006 Saab 9-3 to BAIC for $200 million USD late in 2009. This development is now BAIC’s rather than Saabs but Saab will have an ongoing relationship with BAIC in consulting about these vehicles.

SaabUSA site now available on iPad

November 10, 2010 in Saabology

Saab are in the process of migrating the US site to a unified global template but in the meantime, there have been some mild updates to the standard site.

This first came to my attention when Kurt K emailed me all excited about the fact that he could finally view a rendering of the US site on his iPad:

Saab USA iPad

It’s great to see they’ve got this sorted out (and I hope it’s a big, big priority for the global site, which needs to be compatible with mobile devices).

How significant is this?

As far as SU is concerned, mobile devices aren’t a huge part of my regular traffic. They make up about 2% of the visit total here. But within that 2% – which is growing, by the way – the iPad represents close to 50% of the mobile device segment. Within a few months of its release, the iPad is close to being the mobile device used more than all others combined.

It’s primarily a reader and a lot of websites are crafting their iPad offerings carefully as the device offers a pretty rich experience. Get it right, and people will keep coming back.

Anyway, it’s good to see they’ve made a start and hopefully there will be more to come very soon.

Maybe, in a year from now…..

November 9, 2010 in Saabology, Troll Stuff

One of the great frustrations (and ironies) about me running this website is that I’ve never bought a new Saab. I’ve never bought a new car of any make, actually. It’s not something that sits that well with me given that I’m a staunch supporter of the brand but my wife and I have financial plans that involve paying off our house as the #1 priority. I guess you could say I try to make up for the lack of buying by doing other things (e.g. you’re reading one of them right now).

The good news is that the end of our mortgage purgatory is now within sight. It’s still going to take a year or so, but we’re almost getting to the point where I can start looking around and thinking about the Saab I’d like to buy.

A small tangent…..

I must be getting old or something. Even just two years ago, I could spend hours on motoring classified websites, trawling through the various cheapies I’d like to buy. I’ve bought a few of them over the years, too. Older Saabs, Alfas and even a Mazda MX-5. I look at those sites now, though, and there’s very little (aside from unattainable Porsches) that holds any interest for me anymore.

Must be time to start thinking new. /tangent

Whilst I absolutely love the Saab 9-5, I have to concede that it would be too expensive for us given what I would expect the Aussie price to be. It’s also bigger than what I think my wife would be comfortable driving.

A Saab 9-3 is more our style and ever since I drove a Saab 9-3x for a week in Sweden last year, it’s been my absolute favourite model in the 9-3 range.

So….. perfect world scenario, here’s what I’d be getting (built on the Saab GB website)

My Saab 9-3x

That’s a Saab 9-3x in Laser Red, with the TTiD engine and FWD.

The interior is the more spartan textile/leather combination in black and grey. There’s something about it that suits the more utilitarian nature of the car for me.

My Saab 9-3x Int

Options would include the Prestige Pack, comprising electric memory seats and the BOSE upgraded audio and Bluetooth.

I don’t particularly need XWD where I live and I’d be very happy to get the combined frugality and performance of the 180hp and 400Nm TTiD engine.

Well, kind of…..

Given that this would be the first new car purchase (and assuming it’ll be available here in Australia) I’d try and make it a little special by going for the Hirsch software upgrade. This would lift the output to 200hp and 430Nm without any loss in economy or warranty coverage. The 0-100 sprint is only marginally faster, but the 80-120 push is significantly quicker (as it should be with Saabs).

Whilst burying my nose in the Hirsch order book, I’d also spring for the Carbon Leather dashboard to dress up the interior. Their sportier steering wheel might also come into calculations, depending on the budget.

My Saab 9-3x Side

So, all going well, this is the car I’d like to be telling you all about – finally – in around 12-18 months from now.

It’ll have been a long haul from being a newbie blogger with an old 99Turbo to this, but it’s a journey well worth taking.

Tuesday Night Snippets

Just been to see The Social Network. Very good film.

And on another personal note, can I just say I hope Mark Webber drives the wheels off his Red Bull next weekend and brings home Australia’s first F1 World Championship in 30 years. Go, Aussie Grit!

Saab Netherlands are pushing their cars towards the medical crowd, having just signed a deal offering special discounts to medical professionals there.

There are some 13,000 members in the professional organisation, all of whom will have access to special pricing.

Whilst I couldn’t find the press release they refer to, Autoweek.nl have the details.

This Saab 9-5 review at EVO isn’t a new one. I think it passed across my inbox last month but I didn’t cover it here.

It’s just passed by again, thanks to Pete Y, and I figured now’s as good a time as any.

It’s a little odd in that EVO are a UK-based publication and the Saab 9-5 copped a fair caning from the press there. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop the writer at EVO loving the new 9-5 and giving it 4 out of 5 stars.

I’d have one over a 5-series or an A6, no question. Objectively it’s as good, in some ways better. Subjectively, it’s about 200 per cent more interesting.

Good stuff, that.

——

Speaking of the 9-5, if you’d like to know a little more about the origins of the DriveSense system, click here.

I see a yellow Saab every time I walk out my front door. It’s a bit of a clown car, but I’m quite used to it now.

I don’t think I’d get so accustomed to seeing this yellow Saab every day, though.

Thanks to Mark C!
