TV spot – New Salem Saab’s December sale

December 23, 2010 in Saabology

I wrote a few days ago about the big end-of-year sale that will be on at New Salem Saab between Christmas and New Years.

Darryl’s got access to around 70 vehicles that will be extremely attractively priced and I’m hoping to bring the list of what’s on offer very soon.

Until then, however….. Darryl’s just sent over a link to the TV spot that’s been put together for the campaign – just another step in watching the whole thing unfold.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UJXHYTeAXo

It’s one thing to watch a campaign being developed and executed, but don’t forget that you can participate as well. If you’ve been contemplating an upgrade and you’re in the vicinity, then this is a great opportunity.

Feel free to pass that video around, too. Sharing is caring!

Press Release: Saab Automobile and Fouriertransform in transmissions engineering agreement

December 23, 2010 in News

Hopefully, in addition to driving down break even points and improving efficiencies, this new company will also provide some pretty decent transmissions!

——

  • Saab Automobile transmissions development divested to new company fully owned by investor consortium and staffed by former Saab Automobile engineers
  • New company called VICURA will focus on transmission technology development for the international vehicle industry
  • Next step in Saab Automobile restructuring secures more efficient operations
  • Agreement allows Fouriertransform to secure strong engineering base and further develop competitive edge for Swedish vehicle industry

Trollhättan, Sweden: Saab Automobile is continuing to streamline its operations by transferring its transmissions development work to a new company wholly owned by a consortium led by the Swedish state-backed venture capital investor Fouriertransform.

The new company, called VICURA and to be formally established on January 1, will be staffed by more than 50 former Saab Automobile Powertrain engineers and will develop transmission systems for the international automotive industry, including Saab Automobile. The company will be headquartered in Trollhättan.

The agreement with Fouriertransform is the next step in Saab Automobile’s restructuring towards becoming a successful, stand-alone company and will make Saab Automobile’s organization operate more efficiently.

Announcing the deal, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said: “I am delighted to reach this agreement with Fouriertransform. This step, together with other initiatives, will drive down our break-even point and improve operational efficiency as we work towards becoming a profitable, independent company.”

Per Nordberg, CEO at Fouriertransform, said: “The trend of outsourcing of transmission development is definitively increasing. For Sweden and the Swedish automotive industry as a whole, it is vital to maintain and further develop high competence within this field and that is exactly what these skilled former Saab engineers will offer as consultants in this competitive vehicle market.”

Saab (unofficial) ad competition – the winners!!

December 22, 2010 in Saabology

The poll for the Saab (unofficial) ad competition has now closed and we have our three winners. They’ll be the recipients of a mix of cash and gift vouchers from both Saabs United and the following generous sponsors: New Salem Saab, International Saab, ATS, transport services, SoonSaab, State of Nine, Maptun, Elkparts, Saab USA Parts, The Fudge A’fare and a couple of generous private donors.

Click here to view the finalists.

Click here to view nearly 500 entries received for this competition!

——

On to the winners, then……

In third place with 142 votes is Regular 9-5 getting you down? You need ours., which was sent in by Talladegan.

This ad seemed to speak to a lot of people, tapping in to the shared theme of needing to escape the regular 9 to 5 routine and the Saab 9-5 being the perfect alternative choice for doing so.

In second place with a very decent 254 votes is People who test drive a Saab usually by one, which was one of a very strong range of ads submitted by Jorrit.

It’s a sentiment that many Saab fans will resonate with, particularly if they’re currently driving something that isn’t a Saab. I imagine they’d see the 900 in that ad and think about the old days, right before calling their local dealer to see what’s in stock.

This is arguably the most ‘print-ready’ of the ads, gelling seamlessly with Saab’s brand language straight out of the box. For the record, my personal vote went to Jorrit’s other finalist entry, Great Scandinavian design….

Drumroll………………

And your winner, with a 25% slice of the pie and 344 public votes (and the leader right from the beginning, to be honest) is Four seasons, Four wheels, Four elements, Four letters, which was submitted by ViktorH.

And the text….

Saab ad competition

It’s a little controversial, isn’t it. A car ad without a car in it.

And yet I knew this ad could do well from the first moment I saw it because it draws you in to look at the symbols and perform just the right amount of mental gymnastics in order to get the massage.

It’s an impressive result for an impressive ad. Congratulations, ViktorH.

——

BONUS – THE SU ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD

We had one particular entrant in the competition who was tenacious in terms of both the regularity of his submissions and the manner in which he applied himself to listening to people’s thoughts and improving his ads accordingly.

Saab ad competition

Jake is just 13 years old yet he managed to submit an impressive quantity of work. Several of his ads received votes from the judges but unfortunately for Jake, none received the required second vote needed to get into the finals.

This isn’t a sympathy award. We had other 13 year old entrants, too. This is a reward for a month’s hard work for a young man with the will to work and the maturity to improve his work as things progressed. I admired his dedication to the task. At an age where other kids are busy texting their friends about texting their friends, Jake wanted to improve his work and earn himself some cash.

I can’t do much about the cash, but I’ll be sending Jake my last remaining sealed copy of the Saab Sonett #4 book, which I believe is now quite unavailable given that it was a limited edition released around 5 years ago. It’s a fantastic read about an element of Saab’s heritage that we’d all love to see return.

Wednesday Snippets

December 22, 2010 in Saabology

It’s a few days until Christmas but I’m ready for this year to be over. It’s been a long one full of celebrations and happy moments, but also a lot of uphill battles on multiple fronts – and I’m just about done.

How you doing?

——

Some Saab owners are getting together in Massachusetts to donate their hair to the American Cancer Society for use as wigs.

The Saab Shave Off has a Facebook page and you can check out the details there.

This is a great cause. Nearly everyone I know has had a family member touched by cancer in some way or another and hair loss is a common side effect of the treatment. For many, especially women, retaining hair cover is a key to retaining self esteem and just keeping up with their daily lives.

——

Saab Convertible owners will be rightly P’d off to read this load of complete bunk from The Car Connection. From reputed poor transmissions to unuseable rear seats, it’s fair to think that someone swapped a Saab badge onto something smaller and our (?)educated writer didn’t pick the difference.

——

Here’s a fantastic bit of light reading from a car dealer in the UK.

It’s about the various types of people he deals with in his day-to-day endeavours.

With mainstream dealers falling over each other at auction to bid secondhand prices through the roof on all but the most unsaleable of ordinary rubbish, I’ve spent a good few months specialising instead in finding immaculate, low mileage older cars that are on the brink of becoming classics.

We’re talking late Eighties, early Nineties stuff here, where the enthusiasts are of the age where they no longer live with their parents and earn enough money to throw some disposable income down Memory Lane, while there are sufficient cars still out there with owners who don’t yet realise they have such a following.

There’s some very good info there (and a few good tips for would-be buyers and traders, too).

——

Spotted recently by Olav, in Norway, a new 9-5 taxi to go with the one we’ve already covered from Finland. I’m sure these will become more commonplace soon, but it’s good to see nonetheless.

SCWC check out Saab 9-5, Springmans Saab

December 22, 2010 in Saabology

We’ve been following events related to Saab’s reintroduction into Canada for some time now and one of the dealerships that’s been in contact quite regularly through comments is Springmans Saab in Vancouver, BC.

Last weekend, Springmans hosted a group from the Saab Club of Western Canada. Around 10 cars and 20 people attended and many of them got to see and drive the new Saab 9-5 for the first time.

SaabKen is a both at Saab Central and here at SU and he emailed me the following report from the weekend.

——

At our December 18th club meet, we went to visit Greater Vancouver’s first (and so far only) post-GM Saab dealership, Springman’s SAAB.

Their staff greeted us with tremendous hospitality (you know who you are, gents …. ). Some of us luckier ones got to sit in, and test drive, the 9-5. They only have the turbo 4 (6-spd) at the moment, but will be getting the Aero Turbo6 XWD in the next month or so. New inventory for Canada is still trickling in.

Below is some very limited footage of my drive (only out of the dealer lot, since all the parts where I was cruising supersonic we’re not allowed to post cuz a certain important somebody from Springman’s is sitting shotgun ).

Oh, the DI 2.0T (220hp) turbo 4 was sweeeeet and if anyone thinks it’s inadequate for the 4,400lb 9-5, you HAVE to drive it first to see how sweet it is, or else shut the heck up. I think in the clip I shifted up to 2nd at 4000rpm but it likes to rev. The shifter was still a bit too Saabish (read: notchy) for my taste, but at least the throws were short and the shift knob shaped perfectly. Torque steer ….. nada. Turbo lag ….. nada.

Here goes…. (two other SCWC-ers heard speaking from the backseat)

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSipmSx3bC4

I’ve not driven the Aero obviously, but I can easily imagine years of me happily driving with the turbo 4 without any urge to step up in horsepower nor the fancy driver-adjustable suspension setup. But I’m quite curious how different the FWD and XWD feel in spirited driving.

I’ve posted some pics here (and note how tiny the 96 looks compared to the new 9-5! – SW).

And also one other highlight is meeting a new member to SCWC, Jason, who brought his ’73 96. He also has a Sonett (in rebuild mode, I believe).

Again, my big thanks to Jason Powell and Rob Adolph for their time and hospitality. We look forward to being part of another event with Springman’s Saab in the near future.

=============

Cheers
Ken

Big US Saab sale event between Christmas and New Years

December 21, 2010 in News

If you’re in the US and you’ve been contemplating getting a new Saab, you might get the opportunity you’ve been waiting for in the week between Christmas and New Years.

A handful of Saab dealers will be participating in this event, all of them making stock available for New Salem Saab in Albany, NY, a long term friend of SU.

I hope to bring you some more details in the next few days, but here’s a sample of what’s going to be available:

2010 9-3 Sports sedan, 4 cyl turbo, 6sp manual trans, no sunroof, black exterior and black leather interior. Sale priced for current Saab owners at $22,750.

There’ll be around 70 or more 2010 models available at these sort of knockdown prices and thanks to Darryl Carl at New Salem Saab we’ll be following the campaign to see how it goes.

The Truth or Dare ads have been prepared, including radio and TV versions, and they’ll be going strong, starting from today.

In essence, we’ve seen this campaign develop right from the get-go with those Truth or Dare ads and next week will be the big test. It’ll be great to watch the process.

——

This isn’t just an observation exercise, though. It’s a sales event and there are incredibly good cars going at prices that represent amazing value.

As I said at the start, if you’ve been on the fringe of picking up a new Saab for a little while now, you won’t get a better opportunity to bag a big deal than this.

Under $23K for a brand new 9-3 is exceptional value by any measure.

Saab Christmas wishes from Facebook fans

December 21, 2010 in Saabology

Over at the Saab Newsroom, they’ve taken the 3,000 Facebook photos that fans have loaded up and created a Christmas mosaic for people to enjoy.

OK, so there’s not much detail there, but visit the larger version and there’s much more to see…..

These are all images set up by fans of Saab on their Facebook page. If you haven’t given it the official thumbs up yet, you might want to check it out.

If you’ve submitted an image, your task is to find it!

:-)

Saab to get some visual enhancements

December 21, 2010 in News

I don’t know about you, but I think this is welcome news:

Stockholm Design Lab’s mission to update the Saab’s graphic identity.

As Media Day earlier on Friday told the Stockholm Design Lab forced to lay off staff after a tough year. The Office can now present a victory – then Stockhom Design Lab rakes in prestige customer Saab.

- Saab went out in one pitch after the summer and we won. It is a very interesting assignment, “said Stockholm Design Lab’s founder and CEO Bjorn Kusoffsky to Dagensmedia.se.

What will you do for Saab?

- The mission is very fresh and we’re just formulating it. We are in an initial phase, but Saab will be after a pretty tough time launching new models.

I assume this engagement has to do with brand elements like photography and the nature of graphic presentation. When I first started blogging about Saab they had really cool visuals. The photography seemed to be a bit more stylish with lots of white backgrounds and dynamic angles.

Things have got a bit more generic in the last few years before the Saab sale, presumably due to lower budgets and less commitment from the former owners. Saab made lemonade out of the lemons they were given (the exemplary Saab auto show stand, for instance), but parts of their presentations have lacked a certain element of excitement.

I think a good spring clean will do wonders, especially with new websites coming and new markets to enter.

Thanks Fredrik.

Press Release: Saab Automobile to team up with CATC for China import

December 21, 2010 in News

This wasn’t really expected until next year, but as things tend to do at the moment, it came out while I was sleeping :-)

It’s great news because it opens the door for Saab in China once again, but inroads will be small to begin with as the real benefits from being in China come when you can manufacture there.

——

Saab Automobile to team up with CATC for China import

  • Saab sets up its own organization in China
  • Saab Automobile and CATC agree in principal on import deal for Saab cars and parts for Chinese market
  • Beijing-based CATC established operator in Chinese automotive sector
  • Major step to establish Saab brand in China as expansion of Saab sales operations continues

Trollhättan, Sweden: Saab Automobile today announced a major step in the expansion of its sales operations by announcing a planned agreement with China Automobile Trading Co. LTD (CATC) regarding the import of Saab vehicles and spare parts for the Chinese market. By signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with CATC, Saab re-establishes a firm footing for the brand in the largest car market in the world.

Beijing-based CATC is a government-owned company with many years’ experience in the automotive business and will play an important role in the new Saab organisation in China. Under the MOU, CATC will, on behalf of Saab, assume responsibility of the import of Saab cars and parts to China. A contract sealing the agreement is expected to be signed in the first quarter of 2011, with official sales starting in July 2011.

CATC will serve as an official service provider to Saab China, a sales company that will be established in the coming period. Saab China will eventually take over all distribution and after sales responsibilities in China from Shanghai GM, thus far responsible for Saab sales in China. Saab China will maintain a dealer network that is initially set to comprise around ten dealers.

Announcing the agreement, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said: “This agreement is vital for Saab, as it will be the foundation to develop a stronger presence in what is now the largest car market in the world. I am confident that CATC will prove to be the perfect partner for us as we revamp our sales activities in the Chinese market.

“Saab sees strong sales potential in China and we are confident that our product offering will be attractive to both existing and new customers in the market. We look forward to re-establishing the Saab brand in China next year with exciting new products like the new 9-5 Sedan and the 9-4X crossover vehicle.”

Saab ad competition – before the vote….

December 20, 2010 in Saabology

The judges votes are in and it’s almost time to choose your winner in the (unofficial) Saab ad competition. Before we get to the finalists and the all-important vote, however, there are a couple of things that have to be said.

First of all, I have to once again thank our sponsors for this competition. The whole thing started with me putting up $500 and the quality of the first few days entries grabbed people’s attention. In fact, they grabbed so much attention that sponsors continued to jump on board to the point where the prize offering more than doubled!

It wasn’t just corporate sponsors, either. A few regular readers of Saabs United – people just like you – loved the concept of the competition so much that they’ve added some money into the pot as well.

So, great thanks are owed to New Salem Saab, International Saab, ATS, transport services, SoonSaab, State of Nine, Maptun, Elkparts, Saab USA Parts, The Fudge A’fare and a couple of generous private donors.

Secondly, I want to pass on a huge word of thanks to everyone who prepared and posted an entry into this competition. Let me give you a perspective into how hard it was to select the finalists.

The judges were asked to submit between 15 and 20 finalists and the responses were much closer to 20 each (some were over). My hope that there would be enough multiple vote-getters amongst the three groups of nominations to make up a final group for you to vote on. It wasn’t to be. We didn’t get a pool of multiple vote-getters that was big enough to host a final, so I had to become the fourth judge, selecting a group of 15-20 of my own in the hope that my selections would back up a few of the selections made by our primary judging panel (which is what’s happened).

In going through the entries (nearly 500 of them!) with what I thought was a pretty selective approach, I ended up with over 60 first choice candidates. The process of whittling that down to 23 took absolutely ages. I’ve heard from one of the other judges that he spent nearly a full day working through his primary list of around 50 to cut it down to 20.

What does all this mean?

First, it means that there were a LOT of entries submitted that were of a very high standard. Having tallied up the votes and in preparing the images for display later today, I’m surprised at the quality of some of the ads that didn’t make the cut.

And second, it means that there could be a few disappointed people out there when the finalists are posted later. Please know that your work and your creativity is appreciated. Everyone who’s seen this competition has commented on the level of engagement and quality that’s come through it.

The four judges all had pools of around 20 finalists and only 14 have made the cut. There are probably 10 or 20 more ads that came very close to being in the final 14 but didn’t make it through for one reason or another – it really was that close. In fact, I’ve tried to find excuses to include a few in the final that didn’t make the numerical cut, but that would be unfair to those that did and the others that were extremely close.

What you’ll get then, are the multiple vote getters from the four judges’ respective pools of finalists.

If you’re not in there, please forgive us and know that you were quite possibly very close.

If you are in the final, then congratulations to you on your work and I wish you the best of luck in taking one of the three prizes.

Video: Saab circa 1997

December 20, 2010 in Uncategorized

With only half a dozen views so far, this looks to be a recent addition to Youtube (indeed, added just over the weekend).

It’s a good look back through time to 1997 – a time when Saab were full of optimism with the release of the new Saab 9-5.

It’s 7 minutes long and highly enjoyable.

Remembering 18th December, 2009: Dagens Industri

December 19, 2010 in Saabology

A final entry with regard to remembering December 18. This information was sent through from a friend in Trollhattan.

First, here’s the front page of December 18′s print edition of Dagens Industri. DI’s web page has been particularly critical of Saab over the last 18 months, so it’s great to see them making some amends and giving Saab some of the credit they deserve.

The following is a partial transcript/description of what’s written there at DI.

——

The article starts with a description of the journalist’s – DI motor correspondent Håkan Mattsson – meeting with VM at the offices of Saab in Trollhättan in Western Sweden. “VM storms in to the room, stamps the snow of his feet and it is hard not to agree with former State Secretary Jöran Hägglund’s description of this mildly eccentric Dutch man: it’s like a kitchen fan entered the room.

Soon after, VM is joined by JÅJ, still CEO of Saab Automobile. He is as sullen and low key as VM is expressive, but what unites them is their stubbornness and determination not to give up. We were many that shook our heads at VM and laughed at JÅJ’s interpretation that every step towards the grave was in fact a victory. Even now, Saab is not permanently saved. Sales are down by 50%, important launches remain and there are question marks about investments.

But the fact remains – December 18 2009 Saab was closed, December 18, 2010 there are still cars being produced in Trollhättan.”

VM is quoted as saying that the company will not fail, even if it does not meet its targets next year.

JÅJ is quoted at length on how the company has been restructured.

The article goes on to the issue about Antonov: “Another person that is waiting for recognition is Vladimir Antonov, that indirectly is behind Spyker’s acquisition of Saab, but that has been barred by GM to be a direct owner in the Swedish company. The reason should be alleged involvement in criminal activities, including money laundering. But as DI showed earlier this week, two investigations show that there are no evidence for the accusations. VA is freed both in the report from US firm Kroll that was ordered by the Swedish government and the one he himself ordered from US firm IPSA.

VA: “I am not surprised, of course I am not involved in criminal activities”, he says on the phone from Vilnius, where his bank is located.

Q: Has the rumours affected you and your companies?

VA: Enormously. Following the publication of an article in your newspaper, our reputation was damaged severely. And once it is damaged, it is difficult to rebuild. I am in fact not sure how it can be done.”

VA wants to return as direct shareholder and is now trying to convince GM that they made a mistake a year ago.

“VA: We deserve to be shareholders in Saab”.

Q: What does Saab need now?

VA: “Dispel all dark clouds around the questions relating to who financed the purchase from GM. For these reasons, Saab is barred from all normal forms of financing in the capital market. But Spyker needs money to develop Saab, or the company will never be profitable. Take the small model, that needs 200 million Euro or it will never be developed.

Q: Are you willing to invest more?

VA: “I do not know. First, I must be freed from al accusations. But I still believe in the brand and the management of Saab.”

The article continues for another 3 pages.

After the 18th December – Saab guy comes Full Circle

December 19, 2010 in Saabology

This is a quick post-script to the articles published over the weekend remembering December 18, 2009 – the day Saab nearly died.

I got it via email this evening from Dennis Z.

——

Dear Swade,

I was reading the entries about 18th December.

On the 19th December 2009, we all got fired here in The Hague, Holland, after 51 years of representing SAAB in The Hague. And there was no one who could save us! My colleagues and I drove all the cars out of the showroom, tried to sell SAABs on the day of closing, the week after the 19th. Bad day, bad week, bad year.

I was unemployed. It was still not a good time for dealers in Holland, but BMW sold cars like a mad men, so I got a job as senior salesman at the dealer in Gouda, Rotterdam. It was fine working again, but there were no SAABs. For someone who worked with SAAB for more than 8 years, that’s hard!

But then in February, Muller purchased SAAB and things started changing. I kept in contact with some people from the Dutch importer and finally in September, Mrs Raaphort of the local Jaguar dealer called, to ask if I was interested in a job to restart SAAB in The Hague!

So I left BMW (no one understood!!!) and on the 1st of October we opened at The Hague, combined with Jaguar – a very special dealer!

I now work together with 2 old collegues – a workshopmanager (mastertechnician) and a mechanic. We sold five 9-5s this week, and a total of 23 SAABs in two months as a starting dealer! We have a long way to go, but your site keeps me on the right track!

I now drive a 9-3 2.0t Anniversary from 2002 (yep the last modelyear) in hazelnut with grey leather and a original cupholder! I traded it in on a BMW and could not leave it there!

I hope that all Victor Muller promises will work out, than I’ll be working with SAAB until I die!

Cheers, Dennis

——

Fantastic!

Saab Spirit – that’s what it’s all about.

December 18, 2009: the day Saab nearly died

December 19, 2010 in Editorial

It was exactly a year ago today that I wrote an entry entitled GM will close the Saab brand.

  • Saab Sale Cannot Be Concluded
  • Brand to be Wound Down

Detroit. General Motors announced today that the intended sale of Saab Automobile AB would not be concluded. After the withdrawal of Koenigsegg Group AB last month, GM had been in discussions with Spyker Cars about its interest in acquiring Saab. During the due diligence, certain issues arose that both parties believe could not be resolved. As a result, GM will start an orderly wind-down of Saab operations.

“Despite the best efforts of all involved, it has become very clear that the due diligence required to complete this complex transaction could not be executed in a reasonable time. In order to maintain operations, Saab needed a quick resolution,” said GM Europe President Nick Reilly. “We regret that we were not able to complete this transaction with Spyker Cars. We will work closely with the Saab organization to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner. This is not a bankruptcy or forced liquidation process. Consequently, we expect Saab to satisfy debts including supplier payments, and to wind down production and the distribution channel in an orderly manner while looking after our customers.”

It was black day and seemed like the end to what had been a 12-month roller-coaster ride.

Of course, it was not to be. Spyker persisted. Saab were sold and here we stand today with Saab designing, producing and selling new cars as an independent company.

I think just this once, on this one-year anniversary, that it’s worth remembering where Saab have come from. Accordingly, I asked a few people what they remember from December 18, 2009.

Their answers are below, as is my own.

——

Victor Muller – CEO, Spyker Cars, who was trying to buy a car company at the time….

It was hell. I got the message from Scott Mackie (from GM) late on the 17th that the deal was off and on the 18th, we had what looked like a complete collapse. Earlier on the 17th, everything was cruising along OK and we were very close to closing the deal. Then I got the call, with them saying they’d hit a road block and were going to close the company down.

I was livid. I was in total disbelief. I made as many calls as I could just to try and understand what was happening.

The next day, on the 18th, I was at Schipol airport waiting to fly to Stockholm because we were going to close the deal in Stockholm. GM were saying “were going to issue the press release today saying we’re closing things down” and I had to tell them “don’t you dare do anything before I get there.” That flight was the longest two hour flight of my life.

Of course the press release was written. Later that day, Jan-Ake went with the minister back to Trollhattan. I flew to London with Vladimir Antonov and all I remember is being completely and utterly wrecked. We’d had weeks of negotiations and hard work. We hadn’t slept. We just sat in the plane and looked at each other with hollow eyes.

After sleeping on it, I woke up the next morning and made some calls, basically saying that the only way to proceed would be to remove Vladimir from the team and he literally said to me “Whatever it takes”. This guy was a real hero, after going through what he went through that day, he just said “whatever it takes” so that the deal could be done.

That same day we revised our offer, removing all points of contention. It put a lot of pressure back on GM because there was a willing buyer still in the room, putting up everything that they wanted. If we were going to go down, it was only after having thrown absolutely everything at this.

The 17th December to the 7th January was a black time. Except for a small period on Christmas Day where I watched three hours of TV just to escape, I cannot remember a single good memory from that time.

Here we are, a year later. It was worth every sleepless night.

Jan-Ake Jonsson – President and CEO, Saab Automobile

I woke up in Stockholm as my mobile phone rang at 6.45 am. The day before was, as usual, late with work so I ignored the phone. 5 minutes later it rang again and I looked at it and the display said Nick Reilly (from GM Europe).

From there on it was a tough day, where the focus for me was around communication with all the people that had worked so hard for the success of Saab.

A tough day that I would like to forget.

Magnus Hansson – at that time, Global Product Manager, now Regional Director, Nordic.

Dec 18, 2009. A day I will never forget. Started out in eager anticipation as we were all looking forward to the sale of Saab finally being closed in Stockholm later in the afternoon. Exhausted after a long process but looking forward to a celebration, a Xmas break and then ready to go full speed after New Years with all the fun ahead of us.

In fact, we had planned a Friday evening year-end party with the Global Product team I was heading at that time. Little did we know just how much we would be needing the beers that night…..

When the news broke I was sitting together with Knut Simonsson (Director, Marketing) in his room and the two of us were bouncing new 9-5 launch ideas & pricing in great spirits (& creativity I might add). Obviously shock, disbelief, anger and then just an incredible emptiness. I felt the Saab spirit stronger than ever in the friendship we all enjoyed but after calming down, I guess all of us felt anger and a sense of unfair decisions & circumstances pulling the rug from beneath our feet.

It really was a lucky circumstance that we had decided to get together for a party that night as we certainly needed each others company that evening. Sharing with warmth all the fun times we had together and great stories on the brand, fun incidents, persons, cars, happenings and our careers. It really was mentally very final & definitive that night, and more as a very tired man seeing all the newspaper headlines the day after…..

On Sunday Knut called and said Spyker has a plan to get back in business and have not given up and that we have work to do in supporting them with due diligences and preparations. For the first day I was still kind of deflated and in the “Yeah right, this is really going to work….” mode but after another day I pulled myself together.

Seeing the dedication in the Spyker team and their commitment gave me back my energy, fighting spirit and revved me up again to do absolutely everything I could, and everything we as a team could do to support Jan Åke, Victor and Spyker again.

One incredible year later here we are with the first “normal” year since 2007 from start to finish ahead of us, brimming with opportunities to recreate and build up the new Saab!

And me, Swade, your Saab blogger.

I can’t remember much about the actual moment. Whilst it was the 18th in Sweden, it was 2am on the 19th when I covered that press release here, and I remember being pretty groggy at the time, then pretty mad as I listened in on a conference call held by GM.

I actually had a call scheduled with Victor Muller for later in the morning and that’s my enduring memory from this time. Victor was indeed as mad as hell. We spoke for around 40 minutes and the thing I remember about that conversation was the enduring feeling that the fight wasn’t over yet.

I had a four-hour drive later that morning for a family holiday but before I left I wrote the following:

There’s plenty to write about this whole situation, but that’s a long drive away from being done. The one thing I will say is that THE FAT LADY HASN’T SUNG ON THIS COMPANY. She’s in the warm-up room, but she’s not on stage just yet.

What a crazy time. Perhaps I was blessed that it all happened while I was supposed to be sleeping (not that I slept much, but still….)

SAAB UP!
