Remembering December 18 – how far Saab has come

December 18, 2010 in Editorial

This is the second entry in a short series focused on remembering December 18, 2009. That was the day that Saab nearly died, with GM vowing to close the company.

Of course, that didn’t happen, but it’s worthwhile to share a few thoughts about what happened.

This second entry is from Till72, from Germany. The third (and final) entry will be published tomorrow – you don’t want to miss it.

Thanks to Till for sending this through.

——

Dec. 18th 2009

Do you remember? I’m pretty sure you do. To me it’s one of the moments I can even remember what I did the moment the news popped up. I was talking to my dealer on the phone about that 9-3x he had in stock and as I read that “wind down” stuff in a mixture of stubbornness and fear that it might be my last new Saab I told him that I’d take the car. But most of you know that story.

Deep inside I and many, if not most, of us never lost the faith that Saab was worth saving. And we showed that. In many many posts here at SU, in some 70 convoys, in the “I-won’t-buy-from-GM“ campaign…

If I should name the good part of these dark times I’d say it’s from a very personal point of view that I discovered how big my love for Saab really is. And on a broader range the fact that the community got even closer together and with help from Steven at SU central managed to get those events together. And that SU and the fans played quite a role in the successful sales process has been openly admitted by Victor.

So we have proven that Saab has definetely the most loyal following in the automotive industry and we have been rewarded by Spyker’s aquisition of Saab in February. In those ten months of hard work Saab have made many archievements. I won’t list the all again as Steven did that before.

Sure there are also some issues like sales organizations in some markets, the lack of a performance model, the 9-4x launch without a diesel…

Not ideal. But the best you can do with the existing product and limited financial ressources. Dreams are ok, but right now reality counts. Saab just can’t spent a buck on something that doesn’t bring at least three bucks in return.

Saab just can’t please everyone. They never could and they never will. In reality, no-one can. But if you always wait for your personal perfect Saab to come along you may have to wait eternally. If I read the comments on some of Steve’s posts I could get the impression that Saab have a disasterous lineup with absolutely no highlights. And that’s just not the case. We have a brand new 9-5 and 9-4x and a 9-3 that admittedly is a few years old, but still is not old fashioned.

We’re just on the first anniversary of the extinction day. Not even the first anniversary of independence day. A year ago many of us would have sold a kidney for being able to buy anything with four wheels and a Saab badge on the hood in 2010. From that point of view many of our complaints seem to be out of range.

Sure we have the right and maybe even the duty to take a critical look at things. But always keep in mind that independent Saab has just begun and a lot of time in the recent ten months had to be spent on internal organisation issues due to the carve out from GM we don’t even see from outside.

Saab survived the the end of the hatchback, 20 years of GM ownership, even the announcement of a wind-down process. So don’t call Saab doomed because they lack some colors or engine choices. The only thing that could doom Saab is if that loyal following stops believing. And I, personally, hope that will never happen.

That we are very eager to see Saab develop is surely an expression of our love for our quirky little car company. But we have to be patient, too. I’m pretty sure if we could take a look at the wish list of Saabs management we would find most of the things we ask for. But if we could take a look at the cashflow and regular costs we might understand why things take time.

Thanks again to Victor, Jan-Ake and all who were involved in the sales process, to Steven, and to all who rallied in the convoys and ran or supported other campaigns and all of you at SU. You rock!

One man’s Saab story – The start of a new era

December 17, 2010 in Saabology

Over the next few days, I’m going to be featuring a few people’s stories and/or thoughts. All of them coincide with the looming first anniversary (and I think this will be the only occasion where it will be consciously remembered) of December 18 – the day GM announced that Saab would be closed down.

The first in this short series is from Henrik S, whom I thank for sharing so much of his personal Saab journey.

——

More than 30 years of Saabing has put some major tracks in my soul. Therefore it is not so strange that the years of 2009 and 2010 affected me a lot personally. When it came to my knowledge that Saab was out in the cold and for sale it made a big impression on me. A lot of questions went through my head and for some of them I could not find any answer even though I kept on reading the press. It was not until I went into Saabsunited.com (SU) that I found out that I was not alone with my questions. I had found a place were I could talk to other “Saabistas” and get new hope when the darkest headlines were shown in the daily press.

During the spring of 2009 it felt like Saab actually were going to make it. There were a lot of interested potential buyers and there were some positive rumours on SU. But, since it still was just rumours I told my wife that if Saab did not survive this roller coaster I wanted to buy one of the last Saabs manufactured in Trollhättan. It has always been a dream for me to go into the dealer and order a completely new Saab. If the worst would happen, I knew that I would only get one chance and that was now!

Saab 9-5 on show in Finland

December 17, 2010 in Saabology

Saab Finland put on a monster driving event on the 8th and 9th of December.

There were five events held over the two days and all of Saab’s range was present, as were the Saab Performance Team. There were a bunch of new 9-5′s there (XWD, V6, TiD almost all possible variations), 9-3X’s and the new low-emissions 9-3 TTiD’s.

Events were held for VIP customers (x2), Saab dealers and aftersales staff, the local motoring press as well as members of the Saab Club of Finland.

The events were held at Premier Park, a track 30km east of Helsinki.

From Sauli Naski, Aftersales Manager, Saab Finland:

Everything went fine except that track was too slippery for Performance Team show and instead they just drove customers around in 9-3X to show how the car goes sideways (which it does). For the whole event we had several members from our support team at the Saab HQ in Trollhättan, for example Knut Simonsson for the PR-event. The track was really slippery so it was great possibility to test the new 9-5 with V6 and XWD. It works superbly in slippery conditions as long as one remembers that even the most sophisticated ESP and XWD-systems can’t ignore the laws of physics. We also just got 20cm more snow the day before event begun, so we had up to 50cm of snow in the area. Usually we don’t get that much snow in Southern Finland before January if even then. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the event so it definitely was a success.

Sauli also sent links to some video from the event (slippery indeed!). This is real Saab weather.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rkd_BrLdIc

Saab Finland are all geared up for a good 2011. I’m sure there will be some reviews come through from the press attendance at these events.

And don’t forget that the 2011 IntSaab meeting is in Finland this year. I’ll be doing whatever I can to get there and I hope you might be able to get there as well.

Saab 99T rally graphics in Forza3

December 17, 2010 in Saabology

It didn’t take long :-)

Lewis is an Xbox, Forza and Saab fan, so naturally he was quick to download the new special pack that includes the Saab 99 Turbo.

He’s also been applying some custom rally livery in the classic Saab fashion…..

Looks just like the Saabs United Historic Rally Team (and a few somewhat more famous blokes from years ago, too :-) )

I’m not an online gamer, so I don’t know exactly how these things work, but apparently you can get hold of Lewis’ work at his Forza storefront (you can look it up under lwslade).

Nice work!

Saab of Edmonton added to Canadian Saab dealers

December 17, 2010 in News, Saabology

When I posted the listing of Saab Dealers in Canada back in August, there was at least one big Canadian city that had been left off the list – Edmonton. I’m pleased to let you know that that situation seems to have been remedied.

Saab of Edmonton are in the process of preparing their facilities as they await the shipment of some significant stock.

Richard P, a regular here at SU, called in there to say hello. My thanks to him for sending this through.

——

Hi Steven,

Earlier this morning I was able to drop by the new Saab of Edmonton dealer and have a chat with one of the guys there . We had a pretty good chat and I came away with the feeling that the guys behind this new Saab venture are working hard to get Saab on the map for northern Alberta.

The new site is actually the old Daewoo building and it looks like they moved in very recently. The Daewoo signage is still up on the side of the building as well as streetside, but they do have one of those trailer-mounted signage setups at roadside as a temporary sign (see attached photo) so it’s fairly easy to spot that it’s a Saab dealer.

The group ownership behind the dealer is the Daytona Automotive Group who have been around since 1974. To give you an idea of how strong the backing is with this group, they have about $3 million dollars worth of stock in their back lot at the moment that includes Ferraris, Lambo’s and a number of other exotics. They also do not have the “floor plan” inventory system that ties sales and stock to a banker’s schedule. The stock purchases come out of their own pockets. Those are deep pockets.

They had initially placed an order for about 20 Saabs for the first shipment, but they have now more than doubled that with a total of 47 Saabs (yeah… 47!) coming in mid-January. A handful of those already have deposits on them and are considered sold. That is GREAT news. I was told there will be 9-3s, 9-3x’s and 9-5s in that shipment with a good selection of options and transmissions amongst them. All will be 2011 models. By March, they said they will be able to place orders for the 9-4x with delivery of those happening sometime around June 2011.

The showroom is pretty basic at the moment and appears to simply be what Daewoo left behind. There were 3 cars on the floor, one of which is visible through the window in my attached photo. There are at least 5 or 6 used Saabs on the lot looking in excellent shape and priced very attractively. One is a 2008 9-3 Aero for only $24K. VERY tempting for me, but I love my hatch or would want a SportCombi.

I also noticed that there is an extension under construction behind the showroom which I assume will be the new servicing bays. I love my indie mechanic, but once their service center is up and running I will get my Saab in there for an oil change or something similar just to show my appreciation.

We discussed the fact that I had heard of the new dealership from my indie Saab mechanic. From that I gathered that Saab was considering using this indie shop as the authorized service center until there was a dealer here. This was mostly due to the fact that the local GM dealer where Saab customers were sent had no Saab training or half a clue on how to service Saabs. However, that deal didn’t materialize, but I’m guessing it’s because they had Daytona Automotive Group signed up.

Apparently it was always Saab’s intention to get a dealer for northern Alberta, and they had several interested parties, but Saab declined those offers as they were looking for a solid, long term, deep-pocketed investor. This gives me great hope that Saab was that diligent in signing up the best candidate for our local dealer. I can’t wait to see both the 9-3x and the 9-5 in the metal in January!

Cheers from snowy Edmonton!

Saab 9-4x in Aftonbladet

December 16, 2010 in Saabology

Robert Collin from Aftonbladet was in LA for the auto show and whilst it was a few weeks ago now, he’s just published some thoughts on the Saab 9-4x.

The article covers quite a bit about the vehicle’s development and Robert speaks with Peter Dorrich, who some of you will remember from this quick video.

In the Aftonbladet article, Peter goes into a bit more detail about the work that was performed, the fights that he had to have in order to get the Saab 9-4x to be a real, Saab-derived vehicle.

Peter Dörrich, a Saab man from Trollhattan for 30 years despite his German sounding name, had the technical responsibility for the project in which both the Saab 9-4X and Cadillac SRX would be developed…..

…..- I had been involved in developing both the Saab 9-2X and Saab 9-7X and had lived in Detroit since 2000 when I assumed responsibility for the new project in 2005

- We had many ideas that were not shared by Cadillac (that is, Cadillac didn’t see the value in them), not in the beginning anyway,” says Peter Dörrich when we meet in Los Angeles. But the American executives at GM had full confidence in me and I was working on getting the Cadillac people convinced of how we wanted the car…..

……The most important thing was driving characteristics. They had to be European

The story goes on to speak of how many characteristics were developed for the Saab side and were then picked up for the SRX.

The XWD system, for instance.

And thanks to Saab also the Cadillac has all-wheel drive from Haldex. Originally, the SRX was to have a cheaper system, but Saab were relentless, it must be Haldex, and also with the special slip differential eLSD rear, and the SRX got the same system.

- I’m extremely happy with the handling characteristics. They are better than the 9-3X (who received the highest rating for handling the Aftonbladet last year), mostly thanks to the engines. They are stronger, have better torque and run better.

There’s also a little bit about the considerations given to a V6 diesel, however the translation is a bit vague and I don’t want to risk a mistake here. So here’s the original Swedish and hopefully someone can provide an accurate translation.

Translations now received (thanks!)

They were too bad, says Saab boss Jan Åke Jonsson to Aftonbladet. It was a V6 from italian VM Motori and a four cylinder GM engine, but they were not powerful enough and not fuel efficient enough. Then we rather have no diesel, altough we understand what that means for sales in Europe.

The Saab 9-4x as shown in LA looks like it’s going to be one heck of an interesting Saab. It’s the first genuinely Saab-developed vehicle in the segment and personally speaking, I can’t wait to have a crack at it.

Thanks to Arild for the tip (check that link to see the fun Arild’s having with his new 9-5).

Vintage Aussie Saab ad – bloody bewdy, mate!

December 16, 2010 in Saabology

Golfhunter has hunted down a vintage Saab ad – from Australia!

By the look of the seats in the car, it looks like it might have been made in 1979 or 1980, when the Saab 900 was brand new to these shores.

Click here to go to SaabLog-in and watch the ad.

As an Aussie, this made me laugh. So much fun in a cultural cringe sort of way. I would have been around 10 years old when this was made and back then, I don’t think you had to venture too far out of town to find a bloke like this one.

If the humour didn’t translate too well, the ad is emphasising that the car’s full of features, many of which the farmer wouldn’t have thought to use or wouldn’t need to use. In essence, the Swedes built too much into this car.

It’s also interesting to see that Saab made specific ads for Australia back then, too. That’s something I can’t imagine them doing now.

SVD.se speak with Vladimir Antonov

December 16, 2010 in News

Following yesterday’s report that Vladimir Antonov had been exonerated from the rumours and innuendo that barred him from being part of the Saab deal, the man himself has spoken to Svenska Dagbladet.

The Googletrans, with some assistance from Carl-Henrik.

——

Do you still want to buy Saab?

-Yes, absolutely,” he says, on a bad telephone line late yesterday afternoon from Kiev, where he sits in the middle of a board meeting.

You negotiate now with GM to buy Saab and Spyker?

“We are currently negotiating with GM on various opportunities.

It was last Monday that the Debt Office released the confidentiality of a report on the Antonov, which the law firm Vinge gave the U.S. research firm Kroll to do. It was completed on 16 December 2009, just two days before GM stopped the whole affair because the Antonov was involved as an owner.

The second report is one that Antonov commissioned to clear his name. It is made by the survey company, IPSA International. The report addresses the rumors and accusations of money laundering and organized crime. The authors write that they talked to official sources and regulatory authorities in several countries.

Report authors found no evidence that the Antonov acted criminally. The report was completed in June but appears only now to the media.

Why are journalists not seen the report until now?

“It’s not my responsibility. Swedish Government reported back in September. You’ve good legislation in Sweden with open government.

Information in Financial Times last fall claimed that Muller was forced to look for a new sponsor – the Antonov wanted to pull out when he could not come in as a shareholder. But Vladimir Antonov dismisses fears.

How long can the situation (as a lender to Spyker) go on, you have no limit?

“I am a banker who lent money and it is not linked to whether I will be involved directly in the Saab or not. It is linked to my friend Victor Muller. We continue as a bank to lend money to his company and to any customer.

Saab’s new beginning has been a tough year. Victor Muller and Jan Ake Jonsson have been embarrassed to write down the year’s sales forecast twice – from 60 000 cars down to 30 000 cars – thus halving.

Do you really take the Saab with these figures in mind?

It is true, sales have been delayed, but I know they are now following the business plan. I think next year will be much better than this year.

Victor Muller needs to repay a loan of EUR 31 million through his company Tenaci by end of April next year. It is unclear whether he can do it. Antonov can then take the Spyker sports car division that is set as security.

What if he can not pay the loan?

“I think Tenaci can do it – if not we’ll assess it then, but we have a good relationship.

Honestly – do you really think you can come back as the owner of Spyker and Saab?

“I honestly do not know. It may be the closest time will tell.

——

Swade here…..

I should stress that if there was any default on the loan due and payable in April 2011, it’s my understanding that the claim could be made on Spyker’s sports car division, not on the Saab car division.

Frozen Saab 9-5 coupe

December 15, 2010 in Saabology

First we had the frozen Saab 9-5 wagon/hatch.

Now, the first viewing of the frozen Saab 9-5 coupe. If Porsche et al can have a 4-door coupe, why can’t Saab?

:-)

Actually, it’s just a Saab 9-5 sedan, a new company car for Stefan in Vienna.

Congratulations on the acquisition, Stefan!

Welcome Ramsey Saab, NJ

December 15, 2010 in News

Saab recently lost a dealership in New Jersey – Parkfield Saab. Thankfully, another dealer has jumped in to fill the void. Ramsey Saab are a name that might be familiar to people in the area, having a Saab shop up to around 5 years ago. They have their website up and running and are reaching out to all the old Parkfield Saab customers.

I know we had a few ex-Parkfield people here, so those might want to check out Ramsey’s facilities (or those at my friends from Rienertsen Saab, too).

Ramsey Saab are located at 585 Route 17 South, Ramsey, NJ.

Welcome to the family!

Auto Zeitung test Saab 9-5

December 15, 2010 in Saabology

Auto Zeitung is a German publication (with a bit of a history, too, but that’s beside the point here) and they’ve recently published a Saab 9-5 review in their print publication.

Alexandros has been kind enough to provide a summary. Like all reviews, there’s some good and some not-quite-so-good but it seems pretty positive over all, especially for a German magazine reporting on a non-German car.

——

Overall I think it is a very positive test for a German car magazine. Here is the conclusion of the author:

“Rarely were high hopes and expectations lying on a car model, as this is the case with the new Saab 9-5. Even if it doesn’t reach the technical refinement of the premium German competitors, it leaves however a strong impression. Engine, chassis and safety equipment of the not only in terms of pricing competitive, new Saab 9-5
are now back on the state of the art.”

And some highlights of the article….

Positive:

- the typical Saab design is well received, as evidenced by the numerous upraised thumbs of pedestrians
- the Swedes remained faithful to their design-line
- the head-up display is highly recommended
- the widely anticipated and different-colored a-pillars do their part to the fact that the driver cockpit feel like in a jet located
- especially the guest in the second row can look forward to a very generous legroom and a comfortable back seat
- front driver and passenger find generous space on the large and well contoured sports seats
- the two-liter engine impresses with its low vibration and accelerates the 1781 kg heavy sedan strongly
- the test consumption lies at reasonable 10l per 100 km
- Highway comfort is quite convincing
- even in comfort mode the 9-5 takes curves with little body roll
- the large wheels have a positive influence on traction and braking characteristics, a hot brake value of 34.5 meters speaks for itself

Negative:

- the massive C-Pillar posts complicate the view
- backing out of a parking space backwards becomes a test of courage
- the engine tends to stutter at low speeds
- the power of the engine can be moderately dosed
- the light steering is on something unpleasant
- the chassis is in the city due to the mighty 19-inch tires still unsatisfactory
