Saab Germany sales data – November 2010

December 8, 2010 in News

Sorry I’ve not done a small market sales data post, and the inclusion of small markets in comments rather than via email makes it quite laborious to search and extract the information.

BUT, I really wanted to do an entry for this one as it’s the first time in a long time that German Saab sales have been in three figures for a month.

There were 100 Saabs sold in Germany during November 2010.

51 of them were 9-3s (23 diesels, 3 XWD, 21 Convertibles). 49 of them were 9-5s (8 diesel, 23 XWD).

Saab Germany have sold 659 vehicles in 11 months, so to sell 100 of those in just one month is an impressive turnaround.

Maybe the tide is turning, albeit slowly.

——

This news comes directly on the back of the head of Saab Germany tendering his resignation, effective December 31.

——

And whilst we’re in Germany….

Could this be the first public appearance of the Saab 9-5 wagon?

:-)

Or just some fun with winter snow?

——

Thanks to Till and Alexandros.

Wednesday Snippets – Sonett love edition

December 8, 2010 in Saabology

Saab Cars, the official presence of Saab on Facebook, posted a picture and question earlier today.

Which Saab model is your all time favorite? And what’s the feature making it so special?

As you might expect, there were lots of references to the Saab 900 in comments (and a good number for the 99 Turbo, too, which was very pleasing).

What surprised me a little, though, was that out of 385 responses received, not one person gave the Sonett their ‘most loved’ status. That’s not to say that I would have either (99T or Viggen for me) but I would have thought that someone would be showing their love for the Sonett out of that many responses.

——

Peter DeLorenzo pours some cold water on the idea of any car company advertising during the Superbowl.

He lists eight car companies that are signed up so far – Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen – and a cost of around $4million for doing so.

——

Saabs United brought you the first information about Saab 9-4x pricing in mid-November. It was announced then that the base model would sell for $34,200.

A short time later, news came that the 9-4x Aero pricing would come in at a benjamin+change under $49K.

News has started circulating the interwebs about pricing for other models within the Saab 9-4x range.

Saab 9-4x Base – $34,205
Saab 9-4X Premium – $38,075

There are FWD and XWD variants with both of those models. The prices listed there are presumably for the FWD versions.

Saab 9-4x Aero is XWD only, at $48,835

These figures are for the US market and include delivery. They appear not in a press release, but on Autoblog. And yes, this is a mild irritant.

——

If I have a choice, I’ll take the bottom half of the Popular Colors paint chart, thanks.

I know stuff looks good in silver (and black), but still…..50% of cars globally for those two colors?

Director of Saab Germany resigns

December 8, 2010 in News

A Googletrans from a press release received overnight.

——

Saab Germany: Hans-Jörg Hänggi, National Director resigns

• Hans-Jörg Hänggi, National Director of Saab Germany, is leaving the company on 31 December 2010
• Kjell-Åke Eriksson’s appointed Acting National Director
• Search for new National Director is already running

As Saab Automobile said today that Hans-Joerg has Hänggi, National Director Saab Germany, determined to Saab Automobile 31 to leave in December of the year to pursue new professional opportunities. With the resignation of Hänggi will take Kjell-Åke Eriksson limited in time, the position of National Director for the German market. The search for a new National Director has already started and Saab expects to soon be able to provide notice.

Kjell-Åke Eriksson has extensive experience in the German market. Eriksson headed from 2008 to 2009 in his role as Managing Director Saab Germany for over a year the German team. This Eriksson: “Although the reason is for my return to Germany a surprise, but I’m looking forward to another collaboration with the German merchants and the professional team from Saab Germany. I have the feeling of coming home, and I am confident that the changeover will go smoothly from Amsterdam. ”

“We will in the coming weeks, the precise transition plan and the division of tasks between Hans-Jörg Hänggi and I work out,” continued Eriksson. “The search for a new National Director has already begun and will surely soon come to a conclusion.”

Saab 9-3 TTiD – Why 119g/km of CO2 matters

December 8, 2010 in News

If you’re living outside of Europe, then you might be wondering exactly what all the fuss is about when it comes to Saab’s new low-emissions TTiD engine range.

Comparing the Saab TTiD with its low-emissions competition shows that this new engine range has lefted Saab into a super-competitive position in the European market. There are few, if any vehicles that offer the similar amounts of space, power and low CO2 emissions as the 9-3 Sport Sedan fitted with one of these updated TTiD engines. And they’re close to getting the SportCombi under the 120g/km threshold, too.

So why does all this matter?

Fleet News have done a review of the Saab 9-3 TTiD Sport Sedan and their writeup spells it out nicely:

In addition to the twin turbos, Saab has reduced friction in the engine, added low rolling resistance tyres, lightened the car by replacing the sound deadening material, improved the aerodynamics and altered the gear ratios.

It means the Saab now circumvents first year VED and costs just £30 per year thereafter.

It also means 62.8mpg.

And it will be music to fleet users’ ears that the 9-3 has dropped below the all-important 120g/km threshold for the first time (except Aero models). With that comes BIK tax at 13%…..

….The 180bhp diesel engine is a real cracker and the 9-3 balances responsive handling with pothole-smothering comfort. Tall gearing means it settles at low engine speed on the motorway, nice and quiet….

[The gearchange] and a cabin that’s starting to look its age now are the only real gripes; the 9-3 isn’t a benchmark car in any area, but nor does it feel a generation behind any more.

Verdict

In a nutshell, the 9-3 diesel is better and cheaper than it was before – and you can’t really ask much more than that.

Saab dealer flyer – Truth or Dare

December 7, 2010 in Saabology

You know from comments in the last week or so that some Saab dealers are doing it tough. That goes worldwide, but particularly for some in the USA.

Darryl Carl is the dealer principal at New Salem Saab in Albany, New York, and many of you would have seen several lengthy contributions from Darryl in comments. In one comment, he mentioned the questions that he (still) gets asked more often than he’d like. As a result, he’s put the following flyer together to send out to clients and anyone else who he thinks might benefit from it.

I think it’s a great piece of initiative, covering off the basics of Saab’s sale, independence and the ongoing nature of the business. It’s a three-panel pamphlet addresses the five common questions he hears from clients and others.

The front (would be folded in half)

The inside (when opened fully)

And the back (again, would be folded in half)

——

They’ve also made a series of individual flyers, with one question showing on each….

——

My thanks to Darryl for sending these on and allowing me to share them on site. As mentioned, I think it’s a great initiative. It’s good to have something that you can put in people’s hands to reinforce a conversation.

Just another small piece of the puzzle.

Saab 9-5 road test

December 7, 2010 in Saabology

I’m not sure that Bedford Today is known as a motoring publication, but by my reading of this Saab 9-5 road test, I’d be happy to say that the people in the region are well served in the automotive department.

It’s not just that it’s a favourable test for the 9-5, it’s more because it’s a very fair test that covers a bit of history as well as the 9-5 itself.

The all new Saab 9-5 Saloon signals the start of a new era for the brand. Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab, it’s got stand-out looks as well as a fair smattering of advanced technologies and brings a fresh alternative choice to the premium saloon segment.

It seems Saab GB really might be sorting out their test car issues. As with the quick few words posted on EVO last week, this British writer seems to have a grand old time, albeit in the 220hp petrol vehicle.

The 2.0 litre 220hp petrol engine in our test car was the epitome of smoothness once first and second gear had been dispatched. Below that it proved difficult to iron out the fact that it was very eager to get up and running and hence eliminate jerky gearchanges.

No doubting the level of comfort though, which few can surpass.

OK, to be fair, there isn’t a whole lot about actually driving the car in this review, but it was driven and obviously left the writer in a very positive frame of mind, which is a wonderful thing.

Does the Saab 9-5 V6 have more power than stated?

December 7, 2010 in Saabology

BSR are one of the Swedish aftermarket tuning companies that deal with Saabs (and many others).

They’ve released a tune for the Saab 9-5 V6 Aero and as part of their website documentation, they include their dyno results in both stock and tuned form.

The interesting part about this is that Saab quote the 9-5 Aero V6 as having 300hp and 400 Nm (295 lb ft) of torque. BSR’s dyno results tell a slightly different story.

The solid black line, to be measured by the axis on the left, is the standard power measurement. As you can see, it drifts well above the 300hp measurement.

The dotted black line – representing standard torque – also spends a reasonable amount of time above the 400Nm (295 lb ft) measurement.

The measurements BSR get for this engine in standard form are actually 317hp and 438Nm (323 lb ft) – a significant increase over the stated factory maxima.

Peter S, the guy who emailed me about this today, figures the following is the reason why:

My guess is that Saab indeed got the same induction and exhaust changes that the Insignia OPC received, but that the agreement with GM requires that the “official” numbers tilt in GM’s favor for some certain timeframe.

I don’t know any different and I assume BSR haven’t just cut n pasted the results from one car to the other. BSR’s test of the OPC definitely lends some support to the suggestion that Saab got the modifications, even if they can’t talk about it officially.

It’s good to see 9-5 buyers are possibly getting more for their money than they first figured, according to this Swedish test, at least.

I know Saabs are good in winter conditions, but this is crazy!

December 7, 2010 in Uncategorized

Poor thing.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NN5cJf_HVM

For some more pleasing and elegant eye candy, here’s a Dutch test of four cars that people wouldn’t traditionally expect to have all-wheel-drive. One of them is the Saab 9-5.

OK, it’s in Dutch, but the scenery’s nice.

My two cents on Saab’s North American sales (and other stuff)

December 6, 2010 in Editorial

When Saab’s North American sales for November were reported last week, a discussion ensued in comments that became one of the longest threads Saabs United has ever seen outside of the time when Saab were being threatened with closure.

Emotions were expressed. A lot of opinions were shared. People contributed great suggestions and ideas as to how Saab dealers in North America can reconnect with potential buyers.

I sat out of the discussion but watched with interest. I think a lot of people had very valid ideas and I really hope that some people with decision making powers were watching as the discussion developed. I know a lot of other stakeholders were watching.

After a lot of consideration, and a fair bit of consultation, I’d like to add my two cents to the discussion.

Warning – this is another long one.

——

Background

Saab were sold to Spyker in February 2010. The sale set in motion a protracted process whereby Saab would have to separate their operations from those of General Motors. These included virtual separations by way of IT and customer support systems, as well as a physical separation to a separate location for their US offices.

Low sales were initially blamed on low stocks. It took a while for Saab to deliver vehicles to the United States and it was expected that once stocks improved, sales would follow.

That hasn’t happened.

Whilst Saab sales in the US did spike in a statistical sense back in September, with 1,127 vehicles sold, numbers have decreased in the months following and there were only 397 Saabs sold in the US in November.

Saab are struggling in the US. Dealers are struggling and a small number have either closed their doors or declined to continue their relationship with Saab.

In this post, I’d like to analyse the US situation a little more and address some of what I see as being the core problems faced there.

I’d like to begin by noting something that I think we should all acknowledge – we are all coming from a point where we have incomplete and imperfect information. I don’t know the exact processes that Saab have to go through to achieve something, nor do I know what budgets they have for various programs.

I’m probably going to step on some toes in this article, but the ideas expressed herein are offered with the best of intentions for the Saab company. Whilst I have decent background knowledge and good contacts after covering this stuff for almost six years, I freely acknowledge that some of my points will be flawed due to imperfect information.

Some of the points that follow are general in nature. Some of them are directed at the US market in particular.

——

Market segment

Some people have suggested that Saab should be pitching themselves below BMW, Audi and other European marques. They say Saab should be placed just above the better competitors from Asia, as an upmarket alternative to Toyota, Honda (Acura) or Subaru.

I disagree with this, and what’s more, I don’t think Saab can possibly afford to price themselves or play in that segment of the market.

Saab GB sales data – November 2010

December 6, 2010 in News

It’s time for another round of Saab sales data, this time from the third of Saab’s three largest markets, Great Britain.

——

November sales

There were 594 Saabs registered in GB during November. This is up 219% from the 186 that were registered in the same month in 2009.

So far in 2010, there have been 5,148 Saabs registered in GB, which is 28.27% down from the number registered YTD in 2009.

——

This looks like a great result for November but I’m not popping the champagne corks without knowing what the numbers represent.

The US and GB are now on an unofficial caution list due to some history with getting dealers to register vehicles. These look like sales but don’t represent actual deliveries to customers.

Until I hear something different, it’s a cautious “well done” to everyone in the motherland.

Zippy drives the Saab 9-5

December 6, 2010 in Saabology

Zippy’s a regular here at SU and other regulars know he’s been pining for both Saab’s return to his beloved Canada and a chance to drive the new Saab 9-5.

Over the weekend he got to experience both, first hand.

My thanks to him on sharing his experience with the Saab 9-5.

——

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of seeing the new 9-5 for the first time which, I might add, looks much better in the metal than in pictures which tend to make the car look very big and bulky. The model I saw was a six speed manual carbon gray base 2.0T with Curve 17inch alloys and whilst the car would would look better with 18 or 19inch alloys (more on than later), taken in its entirety the car looks fabulous!

The slope of the rear deck is my favorite styling feature and the rear end is by far the the 9-5s most interesting external feature. Lets face it, its gonna be the part of the car that most drivers are going to see.

So, to the interior. First thing I noticed is the steering wheel is smaller than in my 9-3SS. The interior quality is by far the best I have ever seen in any Saab even without the sat-nav system and those seats are simply amazing comfortwise with firmness in all the right places and half decent bolsters to keep you in your seat when you wanna have a little fun in the curves.

The all black interior was garnished with the nice wood inserts around the facsia and on the doors and a splash of aluminium but Id get the parchment leather with the cocoa upper surfaces as this would look simply amazing. The fit and finish was to a high standard but I did miss the cool-to-the-touch aluminium metal interior door handles that my 9-3 is fitted with.

So what is it like to drive? Start the engine and you hear nothing. Is the engine even running? Its that quiet at idle. The shifter has a nice short throw and is very smooth in its action but it didnt stop me stalling it first time. Rob, the sales consultant at Springman’s, told me he did the same thing when he first drove the car so I didnt feel so bad.

The 9-5 feels like a totally different car to the 9-3 but it would only take a short time in the car for it to “shrink around its driver” and feel like the sporty car it quite obviously is!

Second major thing I noticed was that the steering has significantly more feel than I am used to which is one of by “issues” with the 9-3SS. It seems much more responsive to input and is nicely weighted. On the road the car is very very quiet and the only time you would ever hear the engine was when you gave it a bit of gas. I loved the altimeter style speedometer so much that I rarely even looked at the needle which more often than not showed that I was going faster than I thought I was. Yes, the 9-5 is THAT quiet.

Even the roads in and around our fair city didnt disrupt the cars ride and suspension as noise was very subdued even over potholes. The ride was quite firm but I got the feeling that having 18 or 19inch alloys fitted to the car would make the car a little less floaty. The 2.0T engine gives the car its real Saab character as its peppy and not afraid to rev. If the 2.0T is this much fun the Aero must be an absolute riot!!

We didn’t get a chance to hit the highway (roadworks are horrendous at the moment) but the highway is where Saab’s excel and the 9-5 would be no exception. One thing I did notice is the number of people that gave the car a second look which, lets face it, is not at all surprising.

In summary, this is one heckuva car. Its drop dead gorgeous. Its comfy with a perfect balance between sporty and luxury and for the price its a steal as comparable cars having a sticker price that would easily be 10-15% higher. The only thing I would change would be the alloys. I’d upgrade to a sexy set of Edge rims and use the Curve 17inchers for snow tires. The most difficult choice for me would be the colour. Arctic White? Glacier Silver? Java Metallic?

I’d like to thank Rob at Springman’s Saab in Langley for taking time out from his day to chat about all things Saab and giving me the opportunity to be “the first consumer in BC to ever test drive the new 9-5″.

One last thing I feel I should mention is that we need to understand how difficult this last year or so has been on our dealer network. Dealers are looking forward to getting more inventory at which time I expect we will see much more advertising. We need to understand that “Rome wasnt built in a day” and that our dealers are working very hard with the resources they have to get the Saab name out there. With our support we will be able to look back at all this in a few years time knowing that we did the right thing!!

Saab (unofficial) ad competition update

December 6, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve taken a few days away from the ad competition because, to be honest, it got pretty exhausting!

I’m hoping to finalise our judging panel in the next few days and over the course of the next week or so, we’ll get to the task of paring down the full list of submissions into a group that’s compact enough to include in a poll.

In the meantime, the ads have now been loaded on to several public sites so that you can view the collection in its entirety.

On Saabs United

If you hover over the “download” link at the top of this website, the ad competiton will appear as one of the links underneath.

Or you can just click here: Saab (unofficial) Ad Competition

Ads have been loaded onto that page in the order they appeared on the website. There are nearly 480 of them, though some are ineligible and may not appear at the links below.

On Facebook

Gallery 1 (200 images)
Gallery 2 (200 images)
Gallery 3 (60 images)

Please make sure you share them around with your other Saaby (and non-Saaby) friends. Show them what a community can do.

——

On Flickr:

The following collection includes a set for each day of the ad competition: Saab ad competition on Flickr.

Again, please make an effort to share these around with your contacts. Spread the word!

——

Thanks again to all who gave so much effort in preparing entries for this competition. The calibre of the entries started out very good and just got better and better as people learned from each other and thought a bit more about what was needed for a good, engaging advertisement.

Thanks also to our magnificent sponsors – New Salem Saab, International Saab, ATS, transport services, SoonSaab, State of Nine, Maptun, Elkparts, Saab USA Parts, The Fudge A’fare and a couple of private donors – who have made the outcome all the more interesting :-)

Those who wanted to buy Saab, still buy Saabs

December 5, 2010 in Saabology

When Saab were up for sale, there were a number of seriously interested parties.

The Koenigsegg Group used the Koenigsegg name, but were a group of individuals with various backgrounds in business.

Merbanco were a group based in Wyoming, USA, with extensive industrial and business turnaround experience. One of the guys involved with Merbanco, CJ, has been a regular in comments at SU.

Renco, a private company owned by Ira Rennert had interests in smelting, mining (which wasn’t too popular) as well as heavy machinery manufacturing.

The Genii name was used for a group put together by Lars Carlstrom, an entrepreneur in Stockholm. The group was named for Genii Capital, the investment group providing the core backing for the purchase. Of course, the group got a lot of media attention when F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone jimped on board. Genii was actually the third group that Lars Carlstrom put together in a bid to acquire Saab.

Beijing Automotive were also very interested and amongst the first round of potential buyers. Whilst they weren’t selected as one of the final bidders, they did proceed to buy some of Saab’s older technology.

——

It’s been interesting to see that several people from the groups named above have gone on to purchase new Saabs even thought their interest in acquiring the company as a whole didn’t bear fruit.

More Saab 9-4x from Boston

December 4, 2010 in Saabology

John McF went along to the New England Auto Show today and emailed me the following:

The Saab stand was quite a lively place tonight. I was very impressed with the amount of people flocking Saab. I am biased but I would say it was the most impressive display at the show.

And yes, we have a few photos as well of the black Saab 9-4x.

The 9-4x looks great and it’s fantastic to see Saab bring their beautiful Saab stand to the New England show.

Thanks to John for the info.
