Report: Saab sales news

February 25, 2011 in News, Saabology

I just wanted to bring one quick report from the Swedish press to your attention. I think this has been mentioned in the many (many) comments here over the last few days, but may have got lost in the rush.

I’m taking this from the Swedish paper, Affars Valden:

According to Muller, Saab sold 1990 cars during [Week 7]. It is the largest figure since Spyker bought Saab. The sales manager also said that Saab has 700 orders for new 9-4X, which is manufactured in Mexico.

During the party was the brand-new 9-5 Sport Combi, and a refreshed 9-3 Cab Independence Edition which will be manufactured in 366 copies. The goal to sell 80 000 cars this year remains unchanged.

That’s nearly 2,000 cars in one week during February – and that’s 99% likely to be before the sub-120g/km Saab 9-3 SportCombi comes online in Europe and before the Saab 9-5 SportCombi books were opened.

Things are looking up.

I like this bit at the end, too….

And for those who doubt that Saab is going well, said Muller.

- Today, I can collect the tons of Russian caviar and champagne from all those who a year ago made a bet that we would not even get by even one year. But all doubters were wrong. They were wrong!

——

Whilst I know VM wouldn’t say this (he’s a lot more polite than I am), I’ve had enough run-ins with the press from various places to invite people to share a toast. I’m thinking of various members of the press, from Sweden, the US and especially a couple of guys in Canada.

Let’s have a toast for the douchebags,
Let’s have a toast for the a$$holes,
Let’s have a toast for the scumbags,
Everyone of them that I know.

That’s not for those who simply reported facts. It’s for those who used the power and gravity of their opinions to write about Saab negatively when they could and should have written fairly. They made the hill that Saab have had to climb that much steeper.

But hey, we are still here. And I think we’ll toast you all again in December, and again on Feb 23, 2012.

Thanks to Ronald L for the news tip!

Saab 9-5 SportCombi brochure – Sweden

February 25, 2011 in Saabology

Niclas L just received this in the mail and thought he’d snap a few pictures and send them through to share.

It’s in Swedish, and for bandwidth reasons I’ve had to compress it a fair bit, but it’s good to at least see the composition and imagery they’re using for it.

As with all the other Saab 9-5SC efforts we’ve seen, this looks great.

Saab 9-3 Griffin Technical Data

February 25, 2011 in News

In Sweden and Germany the new 9-3 Griffin can be on-line configured over the corresponding Saab site.

This is a Griffin Aero in Oak metallic with the new standard Rims for the Aero line.

But this is not the most interesting of all. The best part is the technical data of the new engine.

While the diesel engines have remained unchanged, the petrol and BioPower engines have been updated. Looking at the power figures for the top of the line engine it doesn’t look like a big change, (220 hp vs. 210 hp) but the torque has increased from 300Nm@ 2500 rpm to 350Nm@2000rpm, and this is a big change !!

So let’s look at the effects of 50Nm more torque.

The acceleration from 0-100kph has decreased from 7.7 sec too 6.9 sec (Hi 9-5 Turbo6).
The acceleration from 80-120kph is worse now, from 10.9sec to 11.5 sec but I think the reason to that is the next figure.

The EuroCycle consumption has been reduced from 7.3 l/100km to impressive 6.7l/100km, all that with standard technology.

The car has moved to the BMW,Audi league leaving Volvo far behind.

Yes, they did it again.

Press release: Saab Highlights at 2011Geneva Motor Show

February 24, 2011 in News

Two world premieres, the launch of the new Saab 9-3 Griffin range, and the unveiling of a limited edition Convertible celebrating Saab’s first year of independence: the Saab stand at next week’s Geneva Motor Show will be packed with more news than ever before.

World Premiere: Concept for Future Saab Design
Taking center stage is an exciting concept car showcasing design features and technologies to be seen in the next generation of products from Saab.

Conceived by a team under new Saab Design Director Jason Castriota, the concept’s sleek visual execution introduces styling themes drawn from Saab’s unique Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired design heritage. Cutting-edge technologies include all wheel drive with an electrically powered rear axle and a ground-breaking car communications platform using the AndroidTM operating system.

World Premiere: New Saab 9-5 SportCombi
Sharing the limelight, but no less important, the much awaited Saab 9-5 SportCombi also makes its world debut. This five-door partner for the new 9-5 Sedan will offer a compelling alternative choice in the large wagon segment and, in many European markets, is expected to sell in even greater volumes than its four-door peer.

Launch of Saab 9-3 Griffin range

The 9-3 range is revitalized with the introduction of the 9-3 Griffin line-up, replacing current Sport Sedan, SportCombi, Convertible and 9-3X specifications. It includes refreshed exterior and interior styling, backed by more powerful, fuel-efficient engines. The new gasoline turbos feature direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, while further fine tuning enables a remarkable 119 g/km CO2 and 4.5 l/100 km combined cycle fuel consumption for the SportCombi with 180 hp turbo diesel power.

Saab 9-3 Convertible Independence Edition
Saab is celebrating the first anniversary of its independence by unveiling an exclusive 9-3 Convertible Independence Edition, of which just 366 examples will be produced. Sharing the Griffin enhancements and based on Aero specification, it has a unique, Amber Orange metallic paint finish, etched side windows and distinctive interior trim.

Saab’s Independence Day – the wrap

February 24, 2011 in Saabology

Saab’s Independence Day – it all seems to have happened so very quickly.

I’d like to take just a minute to thank RedJ and Dave R for being the primary sources of content here during the Independence Day celebrations. One of the hard things for me was being involved in an event and therefore not being able to write about it. They did an outstanding job making sure everything was up to date and informative and I owe them a debt of gratitude for that.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Saab’s management on doing this. Saab will always have to rely on the personal nature of its business. This is evidence of that personal side coming from the top down. It really is a community as well as a company and personally speaking, I feel immensely proud to be a part of it – and I think you should too.

With that said….. here’s a wrap of all that’s happened so you can go through it all again at a more leisurely pace. There are some new links in here, too, so make sure you check them all out.

——

One of our SU regulars, Rune, called in to check things out. His photo gallery at Flickr contains some great images of the 9-3 Independence Edition Convertible and the new Saab 9-5 SportCombi.

——

Our mates from Auto Motor and Sport were also in attendance and they’ve published some fantastic photos from the event, too.

——

RedJ kept a running commentary going on Independence Day celebrations, which was updated as new information and photos came to hand.

Cakes!

——

Of course, the core focus in vehicular terms was split three ways, between the new Saab 9-3 Independence Edition, the Saab 9-3 Griffin the new Saab 9-5 SportCombi. Saab let press releases loose for both the 9-3 editions.

——

Our man on the spot was Dave R, a good friend of mine from England, and Dave was kind enough to supply both photos and his well considered thoughts:

My overwhelming feeling is one of great optimism both in the factory and in the town. I was here in Trollhattan last year on February 23rd. The sense then was more just of relief that Saab was not going to be shut down after all. Now the sense is far more positive – the worst is over, and the hard work is begining to bring its just rewards. There is no point looking back any more and dwelling on the past . The future is bright, so let’s just look forward to the suuccesful future of Saab.

Again, my thanks to Dave for keeping us informed. I’m so glad you were able to see this, mate, and I just wish I could have been there with you.

——

Video?

There’s been more video than you could poke a stick at. Again, Saab’s attempt to keep everyone feeling connected to things and I the words of appreciation that I read in comments to these videos here at SU told me that their work was very much appreciated.

I’ll assume it’s the same crew as usual working on these videos, and send my thanks out to Joe, Charlie and Matt for getting them up online so quickly.

Saab’s year since independence…..

And while we’re here, let’s take a look at the Saab 9-5 SportCombi ad once more…..

——

Thanks again to RedJ, Dave R, all of you who shared in the event and of course, Saab for making it all possible.

I love this company and community. Absolutely awesome!

Press Release: Spyker Cars to sell Spyker Cars

February 24, 2011 in News

SPYKER CARS N.V. IN NEGOTIATIONS TO SELL THE SPYKER SPORTSCAR BUSINESS IN ORDER TO FOCUS ON SAAB AUTOMOBILE

  • Spyker Cars N.V.– the EURONEXT-listed holding company which operates the Spyker and Saab Automobile premium car brands – has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to sell the assets of its Spyker sportscar business (the “Spyker Business”) to a private UK holding company, CPP Global Holdings Limited, which is owned by Vladimir Antonov.
  • Indicative terms include a purchase price of 15 million Euros plus a 17 million Euros earn-out. The proceeds will be used to reduce Spyker Cars N.V.’s debt.
Within 6 months of completion of the sale and subject to certain conditions, it is envisaged that Tenaci Capital B.V. would convert the 9.5 million Euro Convertible Loan at 3.75 Euros per share and 7.5 million Euros of its loans at 5.50 Euros per share to further reduce debt and interest.
  • This transaction would allow Spyker Cars N.V., which will change its name shortly, to exclusively focus on the Saab Automobile business while reducing debt and improving operating results through reduced interest expenses and removing the operating losses related to the Spyker Business.

Zeewolde, The Netherlands, 24 February 2011 – Spyker Cars N.V. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CPP Global Holdings Limited, a UK-based company owned by Vladimir Antonov, concerning a potential sale of the Spyker sportscar business.

The transaction would be structured as an asset purchase of virtually all assets related to the Spyker Business, including the Spyker trademarks and other intellectual property rights, and would be subject to several conditions precedent, including the outcome of Purchaser’s due diligence.

If completed, the proceeds of the purchase price will be used to reduce Spyker Cars N.V. indebtedness to Tenaci Capital B.V., an investment company controlled by Spyker Cars N.V. CEO, Victor Muller, thereby reducing its interest burden going forward. The indicative purchase price would consist of two elements: 15 million Euros due on closing and a maximum of 17 million Euros payable in instalments over the period 2011-2016 from the Spyker Business’ Earnings Before Taxes.

To further reduce Spyker Cars N.V.’s debt, it is envisaged that within 6 months of completion of the sale Tenaci Capital B.V. would convert its Convertible Loan for the amount of 9.5 million Euros at 3.75 Euro per share as well as convert an additional amount of 7.5 million Euros at 5.50 Euros per share subject to completion of the sale and certain conditions.

Hans Hugenholtz, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Spyker Cars N.V., said: “This transaction will allow Spyker Cars N.V. to focus on the Saab Automobile business exclusively, will eliminate the requirement for us to make further capital investment in the Spyker Business, and will reduce our debt.

“The Spyker Business will benefit from a focused and independent management team to progress the business from a commercial and technological point of view. Victor Muller will continue as CEO of the Spyker Business until a successor is appointed, at which time he will become its non-executive chairman. Mr. Muller remains fully engaged as CEO of Spyker Cars N.V. and Chairman of the Board of Saab Automobile AB.

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars N.V. and Chairman of the Board of Saab Automobile AB, said: “Without Spyker we would not have been able to acquire Saab Automobile last year but the Spyker Business soon became a small fish in a large pond as a result. In terms of the overall results of Spyker Cars N.V., the Spyker Business had become immaterial, but to develop its business going forward, its cash needs are relatively significant. Therefore the decision to separate the Spyker Business and Saab Automobile from a capital structure point of view is a good one.”

Vladimir Antonov, chairman of Convers Group said: “Having created an automotive portfolio over the past two years consisting of premium, world-class companies and brands, we are convinced that Spyker will flourish within the CPP Group and become profitable as planned.”

Changing faces of Saab

February 24, 2011 in Saabology

Back when I first showed a spyshot of the Saab 9-3 Griffin earlier this month, there were some people who were finding it hard to pick out the changes that were being made to the car.

The changes are subtle, sure, but they are there.

Carl-Henrik has done us all a favour by laying out three portraits, side by side, so that the changes to the ‘face’ of the Griffin (Aero) model can be seen a little easier. He’s also included a Saab 9-5 so you can see the family connection a little easier.

From left to right:

  • ‘old’ Saab 9-3,
  • Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin,
  • Saab 9-5.

Click….

  • The lower section of the front air dam is now painted
  • The grille in the lower air dam is now a mesh type
  • The foglamp ‘holes’ have changed shape to be more like the 9-5 surrounds
  • The foglamps themselves have a chrome surround directly around the lamp
  • The Saab wordmark is much more prominent on the front grille, a-la the 9-5

The headlamp glass also looks different, but I have a feeling that’s more to do with image processing than it is to do with the actual headlamps.

My thanks to Carl-Henrik!

Saab 9-5 Advertorial

February 24, 2011 in Saabology

We all remember the Saab 9-4x advertorial in the Glamour magazine. Well it seems like Saab has made a second advertorial with a male model and the Saab 9-5 in the Background, the scenery seems to be the same, but Jeff can confirm it.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRPBCvcZLjU

I don’t know in which magazine we will see this advertorial, but maybe somebody in the States should take a look in the next edition of the Glamour magazine.

Sometimes I can’t read. :-(
It says DETAILS shoot, and I read details of the shoot.

Now I know that there is a magazine with the name DETAILS

Thank you lala.

Independence Day – on-site thoughts

February 24, 2011 in Saabology

Our friend DaveR has been assisted at the celebration, and while it was able to send some pictures during the event, it is now that he had some minutes to write down his thoughts about the event today.

Enjoy !!

Arrived at the factory at 11.00 today on a bright, sunny but cold (minus six) morning. The Press assembled, a bit daunting for me as a complete amateur surrounded by so many seasoned professionals, including regular SaabsUnited visitor Graeme L from AutoExpress.

Jan Ake Jonsson greeted us by outlining where Saab stood at present. He stressed that they were part way through a three year plan, upto 2012.It made me realise that those who want ‘everything now’ ( myself included) should view events and actions with this in mind.

Then Victor Muller spoke. What a truly inspirational bloke! He began by saying what a desperate shape Saab were in just over a year ago. ‘Buried’ as he put it.But now they are ‘alive and kicking’, emphasising how proud he was of everyone involved who had fought to achieve this.Employees, suppliers and ‘most importantly’ the customers. He also said, not all together jokingly, that he was about to collect the bets from all those who last year had said to him that Saab would not last a year. Pointedly, he added that no-one would repeat their bets if he were to offer odds now.

Then we went out into the factory to view the new products.A 9-4X was on display, but under covers were the new Griffin, 9-5 Combi and the Independence convertible. Each was uncovered seperately As he did so , Victor was questioned quite closely, even in some cases aggresively, by some members of the Press. It is truely amazing to see Victor operating in such circumstances. He knows all the relevant facts, politely correcting his questioners ( or even inquisitors) when they try to trip him up .In some ways the style of questions was self defeating – the harder the questioning, the better his responses become.

Interpersed with the new model displays were stands providing food – loads and loads of food and soft drinks.Thousands of hot dogs. Hundreds of ‘ Independence’ cakes .Containers of coffee. Boxes of soft drink cans. There were about sixty Press present, and I thought I would be hard pressed to consume my share , but would do my best.My initial fears for my health were unfounded, as at 12.30 back up, in the form of the four thousand or so Saab employees arrived for their part in the celebrations.

They had their well deserved chance to see what they have been instrumental in achieving so far.Jan Ake gave a speech ( naturally in Swedish) , then Victor Muller introduced Jason Castriota, saying that the ‘concept 9-3′ would be displayed at Geneva in around a weeks time.

But it was not all Saab facts and figures. It is Independence Day, so it is a time for celebration. Those who have worked so hard over the past year, including representives of many suppliers, were entertained by Asha Ali and Tomas Ledin. As a Saab fan I have obviously heard and enjoyed Asha Ali’s music in the past.It was my first acquaintance of hearing Tomas Ledin, but his enthusiastic reception by the assembled Swedes made it obvious I was in a minority of one.

Events at the factory came to a close, and I have returned to my hotel for a brief respite before heading to the Museum for more celebrations (including cake!) and meeting up with Saab owning friends.

What an amazing day I have had so far. I am priveliged to have been able to attend this event, on behalf of all the fantastic Saab supporters who gather together here on SaabsUnited.

My overwhelming feeling is one of great optimism both in the factory and in the town .

Independence Day – Australia

February 24, 2011 in Saabology

No photos – it was a meeting and a dinner. But it was a good one.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting up with Saab’s Australian team, as well as the dealer principals from the dealerships that will make up the beginning of the Australian Saab network.

It’s small beginnings at Saab Australia, for sure, but it’s an incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic team. I was really, really impressed with their industry experience and knowledge, but moreso by their excitement at the prospect of doing a ground-up rebuild of the Saab brand here in Australia.

And yes, they really are starting from the ground up. Right now, the offices are so new that they don’t even have a fridge!

But this is one keen team and the dealers seem pretty excited as well. Some of the original planned dealers have not been able to come on board straight away due to logistic concerns expressed by other brands they hold. Basically, at GM’s request, a Saab dealer has to have a separated building and keep their Saab stuff away from GM stuff (all are carry-over dealers from pre-sale days). Not all dealers have that facility, but those that do are on board and all have taken a share of Saab’s first stock shipment.

The other good news for Aussies is that the 9-5 launch will be held in April. Press events will be held in the first third of the month, so cars should hopefully be available for distribution in the near term, following that program.

I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to make a presentation to the dealer group, talking about Saabs United and the role the website was fortunate enough to play covering the sale. Of course, a huge part of that was the Saab Support Convoys and I got to share just how big an impact you, the community, had on keeping Saab’s fate in the public eye.

We had a great time here. I hope you’re having a great time wherever you are and whatever you’re doing.
