The two fascias of the 9-3 Griffin

February 23, 2011 in News

The 9-3 Griffin will be available in two different flavours, The 9-3 Griffin and the 9-3 Aero Griffin.

Here are the two different fascias.

9-3 Sedan Griffin

9-3 SportCombi Aero Griffin

First off all the Aero seems to get turbine wheels, and the normal 9-3 not. Then the lower Grille is different and the Aero has some chrome details in the Fog lamp pods.

And if you take a better look you will see that the Aero has a chrome line on top of the windows, it is only a partial line like the 9-5, but this time is the upper line. I got the impression that it reflects the front signature lights, 9-3 above the light, 9-5 below the light.

Thank you to Patrik B for the hint.

Press Release: New Saab 9-3 Griffin Range

February 23, 2011 in News

Refreshed styling, more power, lower emissions

• Saab 9-3 Griffin range replaces current 9-3 offer
• Refreshed exterior and interior styling
• 9-3 SportCombi TTiD now gives exceptional 119g CO2/km and 180 hp
• New direct injection gasoline engines give more power and 4% average gain in fuel consumption/CO2

Trollhättan, Sweden: The new Saab 9-3 Griffin range, announced today, features refreshed exterior and interior styling, backed by a more powerful, fuel-efficient engine range.

Replacing the current Sport Sedan, SportCombi, Convertible and 9-3X specifications, the 9-3 Griffin range is distinguished by new front bumpers, signature Saab ‘ice block’ headlamps and a Griffin badge on the front fenders. Inside, the instrument panel, cabin décor and seat upholstery are all given a fresh look. Two specifications are offered, standard and Aero.

Under the hood, new 2.0-liter gasoline engines give 163 and 220 hp and include direct injection, variable valve timing and twin scroll turbocharging. Combined cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced on average by 4% across the range.

These new engines join the current 130/160/180 hp 1.9 TTiD turbo diesel line-up which offers very competitive CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km in the Sport Sedan – class-leading efficiency in terms of CO2 per unit of horsepower for the 180 hp variant. Further fine tuning has now also delivered a remarkable 119 g/km for the SportCombi, together with equally impressive 4.5 l/100 km combined cycle fuel consumption.

E85-compatible Saab BioPower variants of both gasoline engines are also available, and six-speed transmissions become standard across the entire powertrain line-up.

Fresh looks
Externally, the 9-3 Griffin range adopts the ‘ice block’ headlamp effect introduced on the new 9-5 sedan. Inspired by the Aero X concept, the units have a distinctive blue/green hue in daylight. The grille also features a more prominent, wing-shaped central bar carrying the SAAB wordmark, again like the 9-5 sedan.

Re-profiled front bumpers include a deep, trapezoidal air intake finished with black, ribbed bars, or a mesh insert for Aero variants. Front fog lamps are fitted as standard and a Griffin emblem, derived from the heraldic Saab badge, appears on the side of the front fenders.

At the rear, the SAAB wordmark replaces badging on the chrome trim and all Sport Sedan variants receive a trunk-mounted spoiler. 16-inch alloy wheels are now fitted as standard, increasing to 17-inch for Aero and Saab XWD variants. New 17- and 18-inch wheel designs are also offered.

The cabin receives a subtle makeover. Titanium metallic-effect trim is introduced around the instrument panel, gearshift molding, doors and glove box, and as an option for the instrument panel fascia. The Aero interior features a graphite fiber-effect for all these items, including the fascia. A brushed metallic effect is also introduced as an option for both standard and Aero variants.

Shark grey fabric inserts now complement both the black and parchment standard leatherette seats, while irregularly ribbed leather with contrasting stitching is introduced for Aero upholstery, also inspired by the Aero X concept.

In both specifications, a useful storage pocket for small items, carrying a Griffin name tag, is fitted to the side of the front seatbacks. The Convertible’s unique seats have a name tag only.

More power, lower fuel consumption and emissions
Further fine tuning for 9-3 Griffin SportCombis fitted with 130/160/180 hp TTiD engines has further improved CO2 emissions and fuel consumption to 119 g/km and 4.5 l/100 km, respectively, over the combined cycle. Like the Sport Sedan, the 180 hp SportCombi clearly leads its class in terms of low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption per unit of horsepower.

More efficient gasoline engines deliver an average combined cycle improvement of 4% in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is in addition to a 10 hp increase over the current 210 hp top-of-the-line offer. With power ratings of 163 hp (120 kW)/ 320 Nm and 220 hp (162 kW)/ 350 Nm, both new engines are available with front-wheel drive and XWD, Saab’s advanced all-wheel-drive system.

The use of variable valve timing and direct injection improves fuel consumption, emissions and performance. Hydraulically operated vane-type cam phasers enable both the inlet and exhaust valve timing to be adjusted independently, according to varying engine speed and load. The many benefits include a broader spread of torque, higher maximum power and improved fuel consumption.

Direct injection delivers fuel under high pressure directly into the combustion chamber. This enables the separation of air and fuel delivery, allowing improved scavenging of the combustion chamber to give substantially more low-end torque and reduced engine knocking.

A twin-scroll turbocharger is also used, which virtually eliminates turbo lag at low engine speeds. Each scroll on the turbine is fed by a separate exhaust passage from a pair of cylinders, enabling a throttle response comparable to that of a naturally-aspirated engine. Other features include twin counter-rotating balance shafts for smooth running and a forged steel crankshaft for added strength.

Volvo throws down gauntlet with V60 plug-in hybrid – can Saab pick it up?

February 23, 2011 in Saabology

Around five years ago now, Saab unveiled a concept car at the Stockholm Motor Show. It was just after the Geneva Salon of 2006, and consequently it got lost in the backwash of the stunning Aero X concept.

That car was the Saab 9-3 BioPower Hybrid – a hybrid car in a Saab 9-3 Convertible body. What wasn’t known widely at the time (and still isn’t) is that that concept car was also intended to be presented as a plug-in hybrid vehicle. GM ordered the press release to be changed and it’s rumoured that the plug cover – the rear badge – was glued shut.

So….. the concept of a plugin hybrid running in concert with environmentally friendly fuel isn’t a totally foreign concept where Saab is concerned. The only thing is, they haven’t actually built one yet.

And apparently Volvo have.

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid combines rear electric motors with a regular diesel engine at the front to consume just 1.9 litres of diesel per 100km, emitting just 49g/km of CO2 when in hybrid mode.

The diesel engine produces 150kW and 440Nm and the electric motors at the back add another 50kW and 200Nm, meaning this car will have the capacity to drive ‘big’ when needed.

It also has three switchable modes – electric, hybrid and diesel, meaning it can run purely off the fuel engine, the electric engine, or a combination of the two.

The car will go on sale in 2012 (they don’t say when in 2012).

——

Saab’s 9-3 replacement vehicle will go on sale in the last quarter of 2012.

Saab’s 9-3 replacement will have a new rear-drive electric propulsion system to work in conjunction with a fossil fuel motor at the front.

Volvo have chosen an existing vehicle for their new groundbreaking drivetrain, which means they can show it now. Saab will be using an all-new vehicle, which means we won’t see it for some time.

The big question is – can Saab do something as compelling as what this Volvo seems to be? Will it offer a plug-in charging capability? Does it need to? Do Saab’s engineers have any more tricks up their sleeve? Can they bring a new dimension to the marketplace in 18 months from now?

I’m pretty sure they can, but it will be very interesting to watch.

Thanks Jeff, for the Volvtip

Independence Day coming in Trollhattan

February 22, 2011 in Saabology

It’s just a few hours away from being February 23 here in Australia, but over in Trollhattan they’ve still got a bit of time to get their Independence Day celebrations ready.

Saabs United has a man on the ground in Trollhattan – my good mate Dave R from England was heading there anyway so he’s got the invitation I couldn’t fill myself, and will be emailing the occasional update as time progresses.

What can Dave expect to see?

TTELA have a quick rundown:

  • Music and events, including presentations from Saab’s senior executives
  • 300 special car-inspired cakes (I hope Dave gets one)
  • Saab 9-3 Independence Edition Convertible
  • Saab 9-3 Griffin
  • Saab 9-3 SportCombi TTiD under 120g/km
  • ……plus, a little Djup Strupe has mentioned that there may be a sneak peek of the Saab 9-5 SportCombi at around 1830. Wait and see. Might be for attendees only.

Help wanted – armrest booster for Saab

    February 22, 2011 in Saabology

I got the following email from Nigel P earlier today and I think there’s probably someone out there with some knowledge of a solution.

I am looking to buy a Turbo Edition 9-5 , one of the last made. For fuel consumption reasons I may go for the 1.9 TiD and have it “Hirsched”, but may go for an Aero having had 3 in the past.

My question is: I need to have a customised arm rest. I had a stroke last year and my left arm gets very tired on longer trips so it needs to be supported. The current one is not really high or long enough.

Do you know of any company that can provide a customised arm rest for a 2008-2009 Saab 9-5?

I’ve already pointed Nigel in the direction of State of Nine, who sell armrest boosters for a variety of Saab models.

Does anyone else know of any solutions? There might be someone else out there with a similar need and all advice would be welcome.

    2011 Saabs with no badges

    February 22, 2011 in Saabology

I didn’t know, so maybe you didn’t know either.

In the US, the 2011 Saab 9-5 is available de-badged as a no-cost option for those who like to go incognito.

I haven’t checked other markets, but I assume it’s probably available wherever you are, too.

I like badges on cars and consequently, I’ve never done a manual de-badging. Say it loud and proud, I say.

    You?

Thanks to John B for the tip.

Report: Saab XWD Days – Mayrhofen, Austria

    February 22, 2011 in Saabology

A few weeks ago, I publicised the very well-priced Saab XWD Days that were being run by Saab Austria and Saab Germany.

Martin D was one of the quick people who jumped on board and booked a place. He’s provided the following report about his adventures.

Lots of photos below…… and my thanks to Martin for the report!

    ——

    Day 1:

It all began with what my mother told me not to do: get into the car of a stranger. This stranger was a guy I only met virtually in the German SAAB enthusiast’s forum www.saab-cars.de. We decided to drive to Mayrhofen together as it is more fun than driving alone – and cheaper, for we are both Swabians… :-)

He picked me up at home, we shook hands and the first thing he told me was: “I got a problem. My SAAB, to be exact. A marden damage to a cable of the diesel particulate filter.”

He started calling all the Saab dealers along our route, but no one had the spare part available…

    So what to do now?

Hope that the Saab will not initiate the cleaning cycle of the particulate filter on our 800 km tour to Mayrhofen and back? Take the risk to drive in “limp home” mode (80 km/h max.) if the cleaning cycle should be started and would definitely fail?

Finally, we drove to a local SAAB dealer to find a solution. And there we found the real SAAB spirit! Not only was a beautiful old 95 sitting on a lifting platform, but the senior owner himself (70 years old!) proposed to fix the broken cable.

And so he did. Himself. With a soldering iron of almost his own age…

Many, many thanks to SAAB-Roth, Stuttgart. You made our day.

Now that the car was fixed, the SAAB spirit came up again:

My driver said “You know better how to find the Autobahn from here. Here are the keys, you drive!” Remember: this was about one hour after we met for the first time in our lives!

As said before, driving with company is much more fun and so we reached Mayrhofen after a nice 4 hours drive. Talking SAAB all way long ;-) Needless to mention that we left the SAAB 9.3 SC as fresh and relaxed as after a 10 minutes drive ;-)

The Mayrhofen “Europa house” was the meeting point, decorated with beautiful 9.5 SAABs all the way. I instantly fell in love with the java body paint of the 9.5 in the entrance hall. We received our hotel vouchers (4 star hotel with pool, sauna and all that stuff) and a SAAB welcome package with SAAB lanyard, XWD cap and brochures. As my mother-in-law says “Life is a present, make the best of it…”

After checking in at the hotel, the dinner took place in the Europahaus. A short welcome talk, snacks, champagne and “PFIFF” (Austrian for a 0,2 liters glass of beer) opened the evening.

The head of SAAB Austria and the head of Mayrhofen tourism came to sit at our table and we had a great evening with meat fondue, local wines and lots of SAAB talking stuff :-)

    Day 2:

After breakfast, meeting point was once again the Europa house. We were transferred to the snow driving area with several 9.3 XWDs (no 9.5s) at our disposal.

Wow, this 4 wheel drive is great! We ploughed through the snow, zigzagged on a handling track and tried to make the cars leave the circular course. Without success…

In high-spirits, we wanted to know: Can we do better without ESP? No we can’t. Or, at least I can’t…. With ESP off, the 9.3X left the circular track and I had to do an emergency brake not to hit another car. And we were stuck. Totally stuck.

The car sat on a snow plate with it’s full underside, so we needed the snow-cat to get us back on the track.

    My fault. Lesson learned… ;-)

After that, we had the chance to drive skidoos which is much fun – and really wearisome for your arms.

The “big boys’ playground” visit ended with a 30 year old (micro-)snow-cat we were allowed to drive. A lot of fun too, and a hell of a lot of noise.

Then came up the next highlight of the day: Driving the 9.5 XWD! In all engine setups. Not on snow, but on small mountain roads.

As one guy brought it to the point: “300 horsepower, six cylinders, fourwheel drive, and I GOT THE KEYS!!!”

Now this is a great car!

Not only does it look much better in the metal than on any photo… It literally flies up the small and steep roads as if it was in it’s natural habitat. Not for a second that you would feel the 5 meters or the almost 2 tons of this car.

Even the “smallest” engine, the 190 hp Diesel, never makes the car feel under-powered. It needs a bit of revs (2000 and up), okay, but then it really bolts up the hilly roads and out of the sharpest bend. And the XWD keeps it on track so that you never ever feel unsafe.

Changing cars to a 9.3X brought up the fear in me that it might look old-fashioned in direct comparison. But no, it doesn’t. It is still a damned good looking car with a damned good looking interior. And it gives the 9.3 owner a warm feeling of “coming home” after driving the 9.5!

“I must not drink as I still have to drive” is a common German saying. The end of the test driving brought up a modifed version of it: “I have to drink as I am no longer allowed to drive” ;-)

Back in the hotel, we enjoyed the swimming pool and the sauna.

In the evening, a typical Tyrolian “Hüttenabend” (mountain hut evening) was the perfect end of a perfect day. Biathlon shooting, typical food, great wines and traditional music in a breathtaking mountain scenery. By the way, we were taken to the hut on steep, icy roads in 9.5 XWDs, showing once more how incredibly good these cars are.

    Day 3:

We had a relaxed skiing day in the great skiing area of Mayrhofen, which is definitely worth another visit. For ski experts, it offers the steepest skirun in Europe! (a horrifying 78% gradient) And no, we didn’t try it…

    Video: Saab Arctic Adventure

    February 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

    From the Trollhattan blog….

We do this event every year at Saab and it gives us a chance to share our Scandinavian roots. The Arctic Adventure is like entering another world and although it is fun, it is also useful too. Learning how to control a car in these conditions makes you a better driver – and you also get to appreciate just what a Saab car is really capable of.

An Independence Day letter to all the Saab Employees out there – from one of your customers

    February 21, 2011 in Editorial

I’ve been busy finishing off a presentation I have to give to Saab dealers here in Australia on Wednesday at a function to celebrate Saab’s independence. That’s why there’s been no fresh articles from me tonight.

Instead, I’d like to share a letter I got from Till72, a Saab 9-3x owner and good friend from Germany. He sent it to me with the express purpose of having it shared on site and I think it sums up how we all feel this week – happy and grateful to all those who have stood by Saab.

    ——

Bad news seems to burn into your memory much more than good news. I can still remember what I was doing as the wind down of Saab was announced, yet I can’t really say what I did when the contracts between Spyker and GM were finally signed.

What I can still remember, though, is the big relief I felt as the message came through. After those weeks of ups and downs the deal was finally sealed and Saab could step into the future as an independent car maker. One big party around the world started.

We were celebrating Victor, a guy we didn’t know anything about just a few weeks before, and one who had deeply impressed us with his tenacity. We were celebrating our efforts as the community played quite a role in the whole game. And we were of course celebrating the fact that Saab was still around.

After the parties were cleaned up there were those questions: how big is the damage for the brand, what do Saab have up their sleeve for the future? We knew about the 9-5 and the 9-4x but it was also quite clear that there was quite a lot of work to do to bring Saab back on track.

During such a rollacoaster of a sales process Saab could easily have bled out regarding manpower and knowledge. I don’t have exact numbers of how many employees left Saab during those months and I won’t blame anyone who had a good offer from elsewhere for leaving. We might have lost our favourite car maker, but the employees might have lost their livelihood. However, I got the impression that most stayed.

So today I’d like to give a big, prolonged applause to the Saab employees. You’re truly one of Saab’s biggest assets, if not the biggest. In fact, you are Saab. You kept working hard through turbulent times to make sure Saab could start right through into the new future. And now that the future is there you pull even more rabbits out of the hat.

    Thanks for that.

During the last year we have learned about of many great things Saab had/has in development even beyond those new models. Sub 120g CO2 TTiD, eAAM and a new 9-3 by 2012 to name just a few. It makes me quite confident that Saab has the capability to survive in today’s automotive landscape. That again made clear how much creative engineering energy there is at Trollhättan.

    Thanks for that.

You gave me a lot of great Saabs over the years. Some gave me special memories, some of them got me out of tricky situations but all of them gave me a great ride and a lot of fun.

    Thanks for that.

Every time I got to meet Saab employees in person or virtually, with the latest example being the Arctic Experience, you made me feel like I belong to a family. The Saab family. It’s more than just being kind to a customer, there is more warmth in the relationship.

    Thanks for that.

So have a great party this week and celebrate yourself. You truly deserve it.

For those Swedes who like their cars to be green, Preem are launching a new diesel variant that’s either 16% or 20% more environmentally friendly (depending on how you read the literature).

Describing the development of the product, which hits the market in April, as “unique”, the firm claims that Preem Evolution diesel reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 16 percent due to the fact that a fifth of the raw material is tall oil.

“New thinking on green solutions lies behind the development of the Evolution diesel. The tall oil has hitherto been regarded as waste by the forest industry. Through innovative thinking and co-operation it has been developed into a renewable resource,” the firm said in a statement.

The product is developed from processing a residue extracted from black liquor in pulp mills and is the result of six years of research and costing the firm more than 300 million kronor ($47 million).

The diesel is identical to fossil diesel molecularly, but is made up of 20 percent renewables, thus qualifying it for tax free status in Sweden and thus comparable in price to regular diesel.

    ——

Don’t blink as you’ll miss it, but here’s our mate Etienne and his Saab 99 in the Boucles de Spa over the weekend.

    httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k4AJqABr-w

From what I can tell of the updates on the Saablog-in website, Etienne completed the course and finished 20th of 140 vehicle in the class.

An excellent effort by the world’s happiest Saab fan (anyone who’s met Etienne will know what I mean)

    ——

If you’re in North America (I think it may be cost-prohibitive otherwise and I’d recommend Maptun anyway) and you have a Saab 9-3 V6 and you haven’t already got a solution to your need for a fatter downpipe and midpipe on your exhaust, then some people at SaabCentral would like to hear from you. They’re looking for 25 people to get a job lot made up.

The thread starts here and ‘kanundrum’ from SC got in touch asking if I’d pass the word around. Consider it passed.

    ——

A little while ago I invited you to participate in some Saaby Student Research. A series of questions were posed and I’d like to thank the many people who completed the questionnaire and sent it to me via email.

I can pass on that I did indeed pass them along to Robin M, who in turn passed them over to the young student concerned.

More than that, though, Jette (the young lady conducting the research) went up to Robin’s neck of the woods over the weekend and a group of Southwest Saab Club members got together to provide more answers, and a few photos as well.

    ——

BMW ownership can come at a price some aren’t willing/able to pay here in Australia.

So much so that it actually made the news over the weekend.

BMW is pursuing hundreds of Australians in bankruptcy proceedings over luxury vehicles collectively worth up to $18 million, as dreams of enjoying opulent lifestyles crash.

The social aspirants now face losing their luxury vehicles and possibly their homes to repay massive debts to car financing giant BMW Finance…..

…..The Sunday Herald Sun inspected 32 BMW actions in the Federal Magistrates’ Court, where the debts ranged from $8000 to $190,000, with most in the $30,000-plus range.

Saab trademarks – IQon and eXWD

    February 21, 2011 in News

EduSaab has been keeping an eye on trademark developments and has noted two new Saab trademarks being registered in the last six months or so.

    IQon:

Apparatus for regulating and controlling electric functions of vehicles; on board vehicle electronic systems, namely interactive vehicle control system for integrating, managing and providing driver access to functions of vehicle navigation system; entertainment system; telephones; vehicle environmental information and control systems for heating and cooling systems in vehicles.

Swade’s read: Pronounced ‘icon’, this should be the system that controls various user systems in your car, as well as integrating your personal device (i.e. your phone) with your vehicle. Look for a lot more integratation and access from the Saab 9-3 replacement vehicle late in 2012.

    OS? My bet is Android.

    ——

    eXWD:

Reproduction of the mark where the mark is represented in standard characters.

Used on: Motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, trucks, vans, engines therefor and structural parts thereof.

Swade’s read: Again, applicable to the Saab 9-3 replacement vehicle, eXWD will relate to the electronic rear drive system being developed by e-AAM, a system that will make its debut on the 9-3 replacement vehicle.
