The SU Review: Skoda Octavia TSI

February 20, 2011 in Editorial

Let’s get one thing clear – I’m no fan of the Skoda Octavia TSI. I will say some complimentary things in the next 1,300-or-so words, but without even a hint of exaggeration, I can tell you that I wouldn’t keep one of these if it was given to me for free.

No chance, whatsoever.

Our Octavia was hire car, so any fans of the car who might find this review offensive have an ‘out’ there. As a hire car, it was a much more attractive proposition than the Mitsubishi Lancer and there was no way I was getting into a smaller car, which would have been the hideous Hyundai i30 or Getz.

I assume this Octavia was a base model (I gave up on checking options at the Skoda Australia website after about 2 minutes). For a base car, it certainly did come quite well equipped – which was definitely one of the good points.

Actually, the good points will dominate this review, even though I don’t like the car. So lets get to them first.

The Octavia feels like it’s built with a whole bunch of metal. It’s a very solid lump. One of the ways they keep the price down is to have an old fashioned metal rod to prop up the hood when you want to look at the engine. Remove that old fashioned hood support and you can feel the solidity of the construction simply in the weight of the hood. Ladies beware, the weight comes as a shock, even to big burly Australian men.

Saturday Night Snippets

February 19, 2011 in Saabology

Greetings from Melbourne.

We got the Skoda and it’s an interesting piece of machinery. Please don’t take ‘interesting’ to mean I’d want one. There are things to admire and things that make the car incredibly annoying. Unfortunately, the annoying things are all to do with driving the car.

Photos and a full report to come, but in response to one remark in comments, there’s no chance whatsoever of me starting Skodasunited.com.

——

Congratulations to Etienne, who’s got his Saab 99 all decorated and ready to go for the rally at Spa.

I look forward to reading all about it.

——

A note to all Aussie Saabers…..

The biennial Saab Car Club of Australia gathering for 2011 will be held in Coffs Harbour over Easter.

Potential attendees should check out the club’s website for details.

The last event in Canberra, in 2009, was reportedly a great time for all and I’m sure Coffs will provide a memorable setting for this year’s event.

——

Have a good weekend, all.

Friday Snippets – Red J edition

February 19, 2011 in Saabology

This is my first snippets edition, let’s see what I found.

For the Canadian Saab fans:

The first Saab to arrive in Edmonton is expected to arrive next week. It will be an Independence Day convertible. Other “normal” Saabs are expected to arrive in Edmonton mid-April.

Saab Canada is telling a different Story about the dealer in Edmonton.

One dealership in Edmonton is selling high-line certified used vehicles and doing a booming business in import service, as well as carrying the new Saab line-up.

Source: The Edmonton Journal, Autonet

For the US American Saab fans:

Saab is having really interesting incentives in February in the US for the 2010 Models, upp to $7,000 for a 2010 Saab 9-3 Convertible.

Source: Autoloaddaily

For the Rally fans:

Saab’s friend and rally enthusiast Vladimir Antonov said to have cleared North One Sport’s (a WRC team) outstanding debt and is providing significant investment for the future.

So people are starting to speculate if this means the return of Saab to Rally racing, maybe next year.

I think, not with the current cars and not next year.

Source: Rallybuzz

For the Swedish Saab fans:

BIL Sweden County and Municipal distributed statistics for January 2011 shows that diesel cars with carbon emissions of up to 120 g / km dominate green car market. In Stockholm County, every newly registered clean car in January, a diesel-powered “120-gram down”. While losing both ethanol cars and gas vehicles market.

Better translation thanks to Börjesson:

In Stockholm County, every second newly registered clean car in January was a diesel-powered “120-grammer”. At the same time, both ethanol cars and gas cars are losing market shares.

I think there is indeed a reason for a sub 120g Saab Wagon.

Source: Bil Sweden

For the BioPower fans:

There is a fascinating article at just-auto explaining why bio-ethanol days of glory are already history in Europe.

I think the last 2 paragraphs tell the hole story.

A spokesperson for Renault, which now sells more FFVs in Europe than any other carmaker, told just-auto that “what is clearly lacking is a stable EU policy environment that delivers a clear and consistent signal to industry.” Meanwhile, Jonathan Nash, Managing Director of Saab Great Britain is clear about what he thinks are some of the reasons behind such inconsistencies: “There has always been a high level of government policy sensitivity around biofuels. This scepticism has been caused in part by the powerful anti-biofuels lobby, while the lack of credible well-to-wheel certification for biofuels’ emissions also makes policy makers ambivalent towards them.”

Whatever the reasons, it is clear that biofuels continue to divide opinion on a major scale in Europe. The fact though, that Europe’s policy makers are as confused as the general public about them is helping no one.

Swade is not Alone

February 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

One of our technicians, Liam Telfer, who emigrated from the UK (where he was already a Saab master tech) more than a decade ago has had a number interesting cars since coming to the States, including Saabs. Perhaps enjoying the “American Dream,” some of his vehicles have been quintessentially American. Currently, he is one of the few here who isn’t driving a Saab. His latest dalliance is with a Dodge Challenger! It is certainly a car with much presence, and is much more masculine and handsome than the cartoonish Camaro or ubiquitous and ordinary Mustang. Still, Liam’s choice of car seemed a bit unusual, but in light of Swade’s revelation, perhaps not!

Mysterious “Green Car” in Jukkasjärvi

February 19, 2011 in News

Anna Andersson from automotorsport.se seems to have a great time in Jukkasjärvi driving the 9-5 on an ice lake under the supervision of Mr. Per Eklund.

This is one of those telephone calls to a reporter that automotorsport seems to do to grow the interest on the next edition of their magazine.

And so as a last question to her, after talking about the 9-4x Pär Brandt asks her, if she had seen something else over there.

This is the Googletrans of her answer.

Well, we have seen Saab’s new eco-car model. It will be an efficient diesel has a CO2 emissions below 120 g / km. But that should not I tell you, there is an embargo on the car until next week when they celebrate Independence Day in Trollhättan. But I can say as much as it is quite similar to another green car model but looks more spacious out …

Is this “green car” the 9-3SC? Or is she talking about a 9-5 SC, which looks more spacious than a V70?

We will know next week.

Driving Octavia

February 18, 2011 in Troll Stuff

Hello peoples.

I’m off to Melbourne tonight. Another weekend with Mrs Swade, and visiting the rest of the family.

Euopcar says this is the car I will be driving. I’m hoping they’re correct and not planning to slot me into something else at the last minute.

Given the reviews that Skoda have been getting in the press here, it’ll be an interesting drive for a few days.

I’ll still be posting over the weekend, just not as much.

Have a good one.

Saab 9-5 SportCombi tailgates comparison

February 18, 2011 in Saabology

Could it be that there will be different tailgates for different markets?

Saab’s officially released image…..

Spyshot, from Trollhattan, beginning of February…..

Saab 9-5 SportCombi

Spyshot, from Trollhattan, yesterday…..

——

Comments, from someone who should be in a position to know, indicate that the third of those images might be the tailgate used for cars shipped to the US market.

I don’t know US design rules, but I do have memories of cars being shipped to Australia from the US with big ugly overriders on the rear bumpers, presumably to keep low-speed colliders away from the panels. Maybe Saab are required to recess the rear door for that market?

I don’t think either one looks substantially better than the other, so it’s a non-issue for me, but an interesting observation nonetheless by various eagle-eyed commenters.

Apparently we’ve got the OK to show this here, and you’ve got the OK to attend, as long as you RSVP beforehand.

Saab of North Olmstead has built a brand new, state of the art ‘Iceblock’ showroom and they’re having a big party to celebrate the opening.

This event is a fantastic chance for you meet up, as well as seeing the newest showroom in the US, the Saab 9-4x and 9-5 (if you haven’t already seen it), the guy who saved Saab Automobile, and all the other entertainment that will go along with such an event.

Saab 9-3 TTiD SportCombi to get ‘Green Car’ status

February 18, 2011 in News

Moved back to the top – this is by far the most important story of the day. It’s going to impact Saab’s sales in a number of European markets in a huge way.

——

TTela.se has it black on white.

Yesterday on a customer event Kjell ac Bergstöm (Chief executive of Saab Powertrain) announced that during the Independence Day presentations Saab will introduce the 9-3 TTiD Sportscombi with an CO2 emission below the magic 120 g/km value.

They also say that the face-lifted 9-3 called Griffin (or Gripen in Swedish ??) will also be presented, but that is rather old news for a SaabsUnited reader. ;-)

Swadetorial: Why I really don’t care what anyone thinks about …..

February 17, 2011 in Editorial

I have a confession to make.

As most of you know, I love Saabs. But even though I love Saabs, I also have an interest in other car companies. The ones I’ve mentioned most on this site are Alfa Romeo and Porsche. I’ve owned a couple of Alfas in my time and I definitely have either/both the Porsche 911 and/or 928 on my automotive bucket list.

But there’s more. I also have a soft spot, small as it is, for a good muscle car.

I knew a guy back in the late 1980s. He was probably in his early 20s and his parents owned a fast-food shop that a girlfriend of mine used to work at. They made great steak sandwhiches, by the way. I didn’t even have to state my order. I’d just walk in the door and Steve’s mother would nod in my direction and get the bacon on the grill. Great times.

Steve’s family were Greek and no-one did muscle cars in Melbourne better than the mediterraneans. Steve, young as he was, had a bright yellow Dodge Challenger from the early 1970s. The thing was big, loud, and it just gleamed. He’d done one hell of a job putting that car together and I can’t imagine the amount of money he must have spent on it.

When it came to cars that we could never afford to buy (i.e. most cars) my mates were mostly into Mustangs or early Aussie Holdens. I had a big soft spot for Burt Reynolds’ Screaming Chicken, but the car that really got my juices flowing was Steve’s Challenger.

Fast forward to today and the Big Three (such as they are) have a renewed pony car war going. Ford have had an updated Mustang for a while now. Chevy have the new Camaro and Dodge have a new Challenger. A few days ago, Dodge also announced the 2012 Charger SRT8, which is the car that piqued my interest in writing this piece.

There’s something about modern Dodge vehicles that really interests me. I know they don’t sell as many of them as what Ford and Chevy sell of their pony cars, but for me, they’ve still got that certain something. It’s most likely the flat-out aggressive looks.

To my eyes, the Mustang looks like it’s trying to be a hip, sophisticated version of it’s former self. The Camaro looks like a cartoon version of its former self. The Challenger and the Charger? They just look like they’d kill you if you glanced at them the wrong way.

Interview: Nils-Johan Andersson – Saab’s new finance chief

February 17, 2011 in News

It’s always encouraging to see good people willing to get on board at Saab. Yesterday, Saab announced the appointment of a new Chief Financial Officer, being Nils-Johan Andersson.

Swedish newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad has had a chat with Andersson, and Arild has been kind enough to provide a transcript for us.

——

Lindab Manager chooses Saab

Lindab CFO Nils-Johan Andersson is the new vice president and CFO at Saab Automobile.

Nils-Johan Andersson, 48 years old, will leave the Lindab Group after twelve years and become vice president and CFO at Saab Automobile. He describes it as a very difficult decision but it is a challenge that he just could not turn down.

- When this issue arose, it seemed so exciting that I wanted to give it a proper chance, says Nils-Johan Andersson.

- It is an exciting company with of course huge challenges ahead.

He took the decision after having gone through Saab’s and the owner Spyker’s business plan. He believes there’s a future for the Swedish car classic.

- Of course that’s my belief. They have reduced the costs to a level which makes it possible to make money when they sell around 80 000 cars per year. I consider the project as entirely feasible.

Otherwise, you would not have taken this job?

- No of course not. I had a fantastic time at Lindab which has a stable and international business. But this feels like a big challenge.

He has his roots in Småland and says that the family moved down from Stockholm to Ängelholm when he began as CFO at Lindab in 1999. Since then he has been involved in both delisting and relisting Lindab on the stock exchange.

- We ran the company as private equity firm until 2006 when we relisted the company and have since built up a good confidence in the stock market.

He has also served on the board of the ice-hockey club Rögle for seven or eight years, but he intends on leaving that position at the next annual meeting.

- It’s been an amazing journey with Rögle and the new arena. It is of course hard to leave the board.

When do you start in Trollhättan?

- We have not set any date. First I must see to it that the transition is working well here at Lindab.

The recruitment process to find his successor has already begun.

For the techies – forming a racing block from billet aluminium

February 17, 2011 in Troll Stuff

Non-Saaby.

I’m constantly amazed when I see the things people can do with the right tools. They always make me feel like a complete idiot, but in the nicest possible way.

If you’re like me and have absolutely no idea about the real work done to build components, then here’s your insight. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Video: 50 years sideways

February 17, 2011 in Saabology

I was going to wait for the weekend before I posted this on site, but now that Autoblog’s got hold of it, I’m getting emails left, right and centre.

Here’s a bit of weekend entertainment for you.

It’s 90 minutes long, so make sure you’ve got a good supply of popcorn and a comfy chair. It’s well worth taking a break for this one.

The film is mostly about racing and its history, with an emphasis on rallying. There’s a good deal of Saab vision in there, too. But it’s not a Saab enthusiasts’ film, it’s a motoring enthusiasts’ film.

Enjoy.
