Poll: The Saab ‘Aero’ name

February 14, 2011 in Saabology

There’s been some discussion in comments and I thought I’d bring the topic up to the front page.

The question at issue is the status of the “Aero” badge on Saabs.

In many markets around the world, you can currently buy a Saab Aero that doesn’t have the most powerful engine Saab offer under the hood. The Saab 9-5 2.0T Aero is the main case in point.

A brief and undocumented history of the Aero.

The Saab 900 didn’t officially have an Aero model, as far as I know. The name was conferred upon some versions of the turbocharged 16V model. I had one from 1985 that I constantly referred to as an Aero on this website, yet there’s no documentation that I’ve seen referring to it as such at an official level.

The Saab 900 did have a model called the SPG (Special Performance Group) in the United States and equivalent models elsewhere in the world were called a Turbo 16, or Turbo 16S. These had a full body kit, the 16v engine and some suspension tweaks. Many had an “Aero” graphic on the stereo system inside the car, which may be where the name came from.

A quick Googling for 900 Aero brochures and official namings that returned zero results supports this view, but I’m happy to receive evidence to the contrary.

Regardless of the particulars, the fact that the Aero moniker was attached to this model of the 900 started the trend of Saab’s performance model being referred to under the Aero name.

The first car to officially be badged as an Aero was the Saab 9000. This model was equipped with every electronic convenience available at the time, had the most incredibly comfortable seats and of course, the 2.3 HOT engine. It looked as good as it went and had all the amenity that Saab had become known for.

Following the 9000, the Saab 9-5 also came with an Aero model. Again, it was the best performing model in the range and was as close to fully loaded as a Saab came.

Shortly after the 9-5 Aero came the first generation 9-3 Aero. This is possibly the first time when Saab allowed some confusion to creep in with regard to the Aero title. At the same time they were selling the Saab 9-3 Aero, they were selling a Saab 9-3 Viggen, with similar top-flight equipment levels. The Aero had the 2.0HOT engine and the Viggen the 2.3HOT, as well as exclusive colors and interior trim.

With the advent of the new Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan, Saab brought in a new model range consisting of Linear, Arc, Vector and Aero. Typically, the Aero had the more powerful engine, something that was reinforced with the introduction of the 2.8T V6.

A few years down the track, however, Saab dropped the V6 engine in a majority of markets and this is when the Aero became something more akin to just a trim level, with body kit, suspension and interior being the differentiators.

Today, in the US, you can buy a Turbo4 Saab 9-3 with XWD that is not an Aero model. You can buy a car with the same engine, but as an Aero model, for around $6,000 more. Both cars have the same 210hp engine. The difference is in the level of trim and equipment.

The 2011 Saab 9-5 sedan with V6 is also available in the US as both an Aero and non-Aero model (known as the Turbo6 XWD). Both share the same V6 engine and XWD system with differences being in trim, gadgets and suspension. Outside the US it’s even more flexible, with some markets offering a four-cylinder car with an Aero trim level.

——

Saab will argue that this type of nomenclature gives people choice. If people want the best trim package they can have it, and in the case of the 9-5, they can have it with the engine of their choosing.

What I’ve read in comments, and what I think personally, too, is that the Aero designation should be for something special. The top of the range model not only in terms of trim, but in terms of engine output as well. It should be distinct.

Perhaps, if Saab had access to more engine options and tuning levels in all countries, this might be the case.

To the poll, then…….

When should the Aero badge be used?

Monday Snippets – Valentines edition

February 14, 2011 in Saabology

It’s been a public holiday here in Hobart and with the beautiful conditions we’ve had today, I hope you’ll forgive me for having made the most of it and enjoying they day. The Wooden Boat Festival was fantastic.

——

It’s also Valentines Day, an occasion we’ve never covered from a Saaby perspective.

Do you have any Valentines Day Saab stories that are fit for sharing? Did you drive off from your wedding with cans a-clunking from your Saab? Shared a memorable romantic drive? Meet your partner at a Saaby event? Have you ever given/received any Saaby gifts for Valentines day and if so, what sort of punishment did you receive?

It doesn’t have to have happened on V-day, any slightly romantic Saaby story will do.

Send in your stories (photos welcome) and I’ll share them all together later in the week. They can be inspiration for next year :-)

——

Congratulations to Nicola on picking up his new Saab 9-5 2.0T Aero. It’s his fifth Saab and the tenth new one in his family since 1982!

10 points to the film buff who can tell me the name of the road the photos were taken on, and the 1960s film it’s famous for (some crazy driving!).

——

Can you imagine a top-ten list where a Saab finishes above a Ford Mustang, a Mitsubishi Evo, a Ferrari F40 and a Bugatti Veyron?

Popular Mechanics has paid tribute to some of the pioneering cars of the turbocharging era. The Saab 99 Turbo is second, with only the Porsche 911 Turbo before it.

It’s a fantastic list and well worth reading.

——

Some fact on Superbowl advertising……

Car ads were four of the top 10 most watched ads during the Superbowl.

Car ads were five of the top 10 most likes ads shown during the Superbowl.

But sadly….

Car ads were zero of the top 10 ads from the Superbowl with the best recall.

——

And finally, spotted by Jos on Twitter……

Saabway Forum employs Night Panel

February 14, 2011 in Saabology

I had this suggested to me for SU just a few weeks ago. Glad to see someone’s done it :-)

The Saabway Club is located in Italy and they’re the first I’ve seen to employ a Night Panel button as a theme switch for their website.

The normal view (click to enlarge):

Note the Night Panel button in that image (a red arrow pointing to it).

And with the Night Panel switched on….

——

Very cool.

But maybe it should darken everything and only light up the appropriate area when when you mouse over it (e.g. a forum topic) ……. :-)

Thanks Luca!

Swedish press drive Saab 9-5 SportCombi

February 13, 2011 in Saabology

This is a report that we’ve already linked to and covered here on SU. RedJ linked to it last week and covered one particular perspective of the story – the fact that Saab might get the new 9-5 down below 120g/km emissions.

That is indeed a significant story, especially if they can do it with the wagon. It’d be a heck of an achievement if they can maintain reasonable power and attain such low emissions, as they’ve done with the Saab 9-3 TTiD.

There was a bigger context to that story, however. RedJ touched on it by reproducing the last section of this story but I’m not sure how many people clicked through and did a translation. The bigger story – the Swedish press getting an exclusive preview drive of the new Saab 9-5 SportCombi.

Martin B has provided a translation of the original story for us, which is essential reading for all those interested in the new Saab 9-5 SportCombi. My thanks to Martin for sending it in.

——

The Saab 9-5 SportCombi is highly anticipated and necessary to lift Saab to profitability. The biggest threat is the market’s fear of poor residual values, but that feels misplaced.

The first hatchback versions of the new 9-5 left the assembly line just before Christmas. After some necessary tuning, “Tjänstebilsfakta“ (i.e Company Car facts), together with a selected number of residual value experts, took a place behind the wheel of the No. 2 and 3 cars, in a record early test drive of just over one month old cars.

The new 9-5 reached Saab’s sales expectations in the large Sedan segment in 2011. Now it is up to the new 9-5 SportCombi to show the model’s full potential.

The Wagon is the same car from the front to the back seat. The ceiling over the back seat was raised by 10-15 mm for better facilities and roofline pulled out and ended in an integrated spoiler, which turns into a steep sloping rear tailgate, which is shared by a lateral light ramp between the rear lights.

The C-pillar is sharply upwards-forwards from rear side windows- a classic Saab design known as the “hockey stick”. The hidden D-pillars make the rear window and rear side windows seem to run together.

Somebody says, it is better looking than the sedan. That is a matter of taste. But the wagon is really attractive and stylish, which is quite important in a world where cars are becoming more streamlined, and in principle are good, serviceable and safe working tools. It’s almost like a hatchback, as someone in the party put it.

Consequently, the new 9-5 SC also houses fewer litres than in the Volvo and BMW 5 Series Touring. But the 530 liters to 555 liters and 560 is quite enough to meet most family demands. They have survived for twelve long years with the old 9-5 – and it was much smaller.

One man’s review: The 2011 Chicago Auto Show

February 13, 2011 in Saabology

Peter Gilbert, known to many as the million-mile Saab guy, went down to Chicago the check out the Auto Show there with Jon, his very tall son (6ft 9in). As you might imagine, Jon can have issues finding a car that fits so the opportunity to check out a whole bunch at one is a welcome one.

My thanks to Peter for sending his thoughts through, and some pics, too:

——

On Friday I drove 90 miles down to Chicago, IL for the first public day of what is deemed the largest US auto show of the year. The 1,000 vehicle display was so large this year that it was split up into two gigantic halls.

Naturally I wanted to go to the Saab stand first, but how could I resist a white Porsche Panamera which was adjacent to the Saab stand? One great plus for SAAB was the way their logo, in big white letters was twice displayed up high in white, close to the black, open architecture ceiling. More prominent than any other marque, one could not miss it.

Then, all of a sudden, the stand hit me with that white, Scandinavian simplicity. There were 8 cars displayed, including a silver Hirsch 9-5, with their big, black logo filling the door area. There was also a 9-3 in the same livery. I loved the transparent Plexiglas cabinet in the center, which had green leaves blowing around inside, as well as the display blocks embedded in the white floor. Kudos to Saab for such a beautiful display. The soft padded, white chairs were the icing on the cake.

I was so engaged showing my son the 9-5 for the first time, that I did not notice the 94-x until he had tried the 9-5 on for size. Being above average size, we were at the show to criticize all relevant vehicles for his wife and new baby. So the four of us were test-sitting in a lot of SUVs and crossovers. Unfortunately the 9-4x was locked because it is the only one in the country, but Jon realized that we could check out the same dimensions when we later sat in the Cadillac SRX.

The Hirsch 9-3 was different from the other 9-3s because of its special grill, and very practical carbon fiber clad, rear-sill which looked outstanding. I was really impressed with the look of the 9-3 Combi and convertible, in white which I have never seen before. Apart from the silver 9-5 there was one in Fjord Blue which was more unique than the average color that one would see from other manufacturers.

Review continues below….

In particular I liked the flat bottom steering wheel which was not only on the Hirsch but also the Aero models. A couple of weeks ago I suggested that Saab have a heated steering wheel, like the Panamera. I since learned that a dealer lost a Saab sale to Mercedes just because of that. Later when we checked the Buick stand the new Verano, which is coming out soon, also offers one. It would seem that some bits could be used from the GM parts bin to make this easy for our cold hands.

As we sat in the competition one point became apparent: The biggest in the range is not necessarily the biggest in driving position; the Audi Q5 is better than the Q7; the Chevy Equinox is more friendly than the Escalade; the Subaru Tribeca is outdone by the Outback. As a point of interest the 9-5 has now surpassed the Volvo S80 as the roomiest sedan from those Jon had tried in the past.

Most interesting was the fact that nearly every car had similar head clearance with a sunroof but the 9-5 had awesome leg-room. When we checked the SRX as a surrogate for the 94-X we were very satisfied with the accommodations. I could not help but notice my bias towards the 9-4x in the execution of its design. It just looks better and has a more refined dash, so much so that having seen the Audi I was thinking about what Victor Muller said about interior design at the Ohio SOC. I think we are almost there. Also the rear of the 9-4x is less oblique and would possibly have more interior cargo space.

I mentioned some of the engineering oddities. I saw the Ford Transit Van, which looked so functional, if not a beauty queen. It was displayed as a van, a taxi and a kind of min-van, with one caveat. It had enough head room for Yao Ming with ease, but the leg-room was so dismal that it looked like it was built for Toulouse-Lautrec in a 10-gallon Stetson. For marketing mistakes, I was shocked that most of Audi’s cars were locked-up, except for the Q5, Q7 and A4.

Subaru, which are generally well engineered, surprised me with their Forrester. They went to all the trouble of building-in electric heaters at the base of the windshield to heat up conventional wiper-blades with the metal clips that ice-up, when all they had to do was install Bosch Icon style blades (which I use all the year round anyway).

Returning to Saab, the driving position of the 9-5 and the SRX was very similar. Sitting in the car at the show is not the same as bouncing around on the real highway but when the 9-5 Combi hits the scene in August that could be the choice for my new Granddaughter to ride around in.

Family rivalry – Saab 9-5 vs Mercedes E-Class

February 12, 2011 in Saabology

Carlos R lives in Spain and he’s recently purchased a Saab 9-5 2.0T. He wrote me an email to tell me about a recent family gathering and share some thoughts on his investment…..

——

Hi Swade,

I’m the lucky owner of a new Saab 9-5 2.0T Vector Aut. with Drive Sense, which I’ve been enjoying for the last 3 months.

I am 37 years old, an industrial engineer, working for a company that carries out big projects in the oil, energy and environmental industries, and at the same time I’m doing my doctoral dissertation on strategic management.

I love cars and driving. Since I was 17 years old I’ve been always reading regarding cars in magazines, internet, etc.

The last two cars I drove before buying my own cars 11 years ago, were my father’s cars: a Mercedes E-class 2.3 E (W124) and an Audi A6 2.4. I drove a lot of kilometers in these cars, so I know these brands very well.

I had been always a Mercedes fan until I discovered Saab 6 years ago. My first car was a Mazda MX-5 10th anniversary, which was a lot of fun to drive. One day I brought my Mazda to a repair shop for maintenance, and whilst the work was being done I took a walk and went to a Saab dealer, where I saw a Saab cabrio. I felt in love instantaneously and I thought I wanted this 4 seat cabrio to be my next car.

After having my MX-5 for five years I changed for a new Saab 9-3 cabrio 1.8t. Ever since that moment I have been a Saab fan…………… :-)

I had my Saab cabrio five years, when I changed for my new Saab 9-5 2.0T Vector Aut. with Drive Sense, a really wonderful car.

I live in Madrid and last weekend I went to the coast to meet my parents. My uncle had bought a new MB E-class 250 CDI Avantgarde Aut. and I called him in order to take a look and test it.

First, I took a look of his car and drove it several kilometers. Then, when we came back to my parent’s house I took my Saab 9-5 and I parked it beside the Mercedes. My first impressions were:

- The test was too short in order to have a conclusion regarding the handling. But I would say both cars are very good in this matter, with the advantage of the “multiple personality” of my Saab thanks to the Drive Sense.

- The MB looked like an old car in comparison with the Saab. The exterior design of the Saab is much more modern, clean, fluent and fresh.

- In the interior, the design of the Saab also seemed much more modern than MB, and the interior finishing was not worse in the Saab than MB. Perhaps, and according to what has already been said several times on this website, the central console and the glove compartment of the Saab could be improved a little.

- The Saab had more interior space than the MB.

- The chassis size (sections of steel structure frame) of the Saab is much bigger than the MB. At this respect, the Mercedes seemed a toy in comparison with the Saab. The Saab is like a tank……………I LOVE it………….It gives a big safety sensation. If the steel used in the chassis of the Saab has the same rigidity as the MB, it’s obvious which car is safer in a strong accident. Now I really understand that Saabs are built by Trolls in Trollhattan and this, the safety, is one of the most important reasons why I buy and I will buy Saabs in the future.

Both my parents and my uncle and aunt (from their faces) liked the Saab more than Mercedes. In fact, my uncle and aunt were really impressed with my Saab. Perhaps they were thinking why did we buy the Mercedes…………………perhaps because 98% of the people don’t know about Saab.

The size of the car, 5.01 m long, although sometimes said to be very big for Europe, is PERFECT for me, for a big sedan with really good space, confort and safety. The additional 13 cm of length in comparison to the Mercedes gives a sensation of more car, and the smooth exterior design hides the actual size very well. It seems a smaller car.

Sometimes I hear strong criticism about Saab, even on this website. Perhaps we have to ask ourselves if we are too demanding and critical with Saab and not with the other competitor brands.

With this experience, my impression is that Saab is going the right way and we have to be very proud of our Saabs and the Trolls are making them in Trollhatam.

Tiago photoshops the Saab Design Concept for Geneva

February 12, 2011 in Saabology

Saab have given us the first teaser image of the design concept they will unveil at the Geneva Motor Show.

In the comments that ensued, Tompa asked one our resident photoshoppers, Tiago do Vale, whether he might be able to make something more from the section that we saw. Tiago was tempted beyond resistance and so here we have his work.

Now, all should bear in mind that this is just an exercise in fun and speculation to the highest degree. Tiago himself prefaces his images with the following:

This one is very speculative, of course: the teaser image doesn’t provide any detail and we might even be wrong about the perspective we believe the photo was taken from. But I had a few hours, I know and admire Castriota’s work… and suspect that this concept will be sporty and low slung… sort of a new sonnet.

And so I did it.

I don’t want anyone to believe that the concept could look anything like this – I’m 1000% sure it will not- but it serves the purpose of testing if our ideas about the picture’s perspective are right. I think they probably are: I superimposed the teaser over the chop – see the second image – and it sort of fits :-)

The first image – Tiago’s photoshop by itself….

And the second image, with the concept teaser superimposed….

There you go, Tompa!

And everyone else, too, of course.

My thanks to Tiago for whipping these up and sending them in.

Geneva Press invitation and JC concept peek

February 12, 2011 in Saabology

I think 1 image is worth more than a thousand words.

If this is a first peek of what Jason Castriota tries to do with Saab, then I’m with him.

This is a 2-colour version of the picture above.

I think you can see some contours, but it is still quite confusing. I just don’t understand the horn.

SaabCarsNA forecast for 2011

February 12, 2011 in Saabology

Lately Automotive News had an Interview with Kurt Schirm, the SCNA Dealer Council head.

One day later (February, 7) SCNA had a meeting with the dealers at the NADA convention in San Francisco. And according to another article at Automotive News SCNA had a lot to tell.

Sales

SCNA is forecasting 15.000 till 20.000 sales in the US this year. They hope the 9-4X, which will arrive in May will help reach this figures.

Portfolio

Saab showed its dealers a picture of 16 different vehicles that are being considered for the Saab portfolio.[In summer 2011 Saab will have 7 different vehicles in its portfolio]

Dealers at the meeting say there was a hatchback model that might be a 9-3 variant. It had a Porsche-like rear with a fin, said one dealer.

Another vehicle was a sports car.

“I saw it and said, ‘Wow, now that’s a Saab!’” said Lynn Thompson, general manager of Saab of Southwest Missouri, Springfield, Mo. “It was something cool.”

Dealerships

Saab wants to rebuild its dealer network. One of the possibilities is adding well performing multi brand dealers.

New promotion

Saab will send/has send promotion kits to its dealers for a new promotion called “Independence Day” to celebrate the first anniversary since Spyker purchased Saab.

The sales forecast is the expected one. To reach 80.000 units world wide they need to retail between 50.000 and 60.000 units in the three big markets S,UK,US.

16 different vehicles is quite a lot, it would be interesting to know which of them can be build on Phoenix, and which require a different platform.

Saab’s Geneva cars – when you’ll see them

February 11, 2011 in News

Earlier today I had a minor meltdown, showing an image of Saab’s Geneva cars all covered up and playing a guessing game as to what they might be.

I could have avoided all that by actually reading the text on the image, going to the website noted on the image, where it laid out which car was which. Screenshot below….

The site also gives an idea as to when we can expect Saab to lift the various sheets off the cars.

Saab Concept Car – This won’t be seen until the Geneva Motor Show on March 1.

Saab 9-5 SportCombi – the first image has already been released, but the car will be seen in full at the Geneva show, too.

Saab 9-3 Griffin – Will be seen on February 23.

Saab 9-3 Independence Edition – Will be seen on February 23.

February 23, of course, is the one-year anniversary of Saab’s independence from General Motors. Saab’s media website indicates that they’ll be holding events in Trollhattan on the 23rd, although at the time of writing, it’s not known what those events will comprise.

At the very least, there will be an unveiling of two new 9-3 versions.

Saab Independence celebration – Tolga Norway

February 11, 2011 in Saabology

Saab themselves will be holding some independence celebrations later this month. They’ve included a brief note to this effect on their Saab Media Events site, but with no details available yet. I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, others are also getting together to re-enact their Saab Support Convoys from last year, and celebrate a year of independence for Saab.

This is the Saab Support Convoy image from Tolga, Norway, from last year. They had around 20 people there at that time, in 11 vehicles.

They’ve done pretty well to almost match that again this year, with eight car loads turning up to celebrate, including a few of the small town’s youngest residents:

Photos: Ola R

From Svein B, in Tolga……

Some of the Saab-people in Tolga, Norway held a little Saab Independence event on January 20th to celebrate Saab’s being on it’s own feet again.

Tolga is a little place with just 1700 inhabitans, but we still had eight cars meeting up this afternoon. At last years Save Saab event in Tolga, even more people met up with their cars.

As you can see on the pictures, some of the future Saabowners followed the meeting :-) We had a most enjoyable evening at the nostalgia-cofee (Caltex) at the local gas-station.

Amongst the cars we had a 76′ 99 GL, two 9000 A50′s, a former embassy-owned 9000 CDE, three 9-5 estates and a 9-3 SS. Saab is the perfect car for where we live (amongst the coldest places in Norway with a long winter) and the Saab-owners here seem to be very proud of and happy with their cars, as Saab people very often tend to be.

Local media met up and wrote in the newspaper about the event.

It’s always great to see people getting together in different places around the world and I think we might see a bit more of that in February as Saab’s first Independence Day comes around.

Geneva invitation hints at four premieres for Saab

February 11, 2011 in Saabology

Last month I wrote a post spelling out the new Saabs we can expect to see in 2011 and at which show we might see them.

I’m not sure how right I was, but by the looks of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show invitation, there might not be a lot left for later on in the year. Geneva’s going to be HUGE!

If the imagery on the invitation is deliberate – and one would have to think it is – then we will see four vehicle debuts at the Geneva Motor Show:

UPDATE: I’m a cock.

Just look up the freaking web address on the image, which I completely overlooked because I was too excited playing detective. It spells out which model is which. At least I got them right.

——

These invitations were sent out in the last day or so and this one was forwarded to me by the guys at Dimini.ch (who sell the best Saab scale models you’ll ever see – I’ve just ordered a 900 Turbo and a 99Turbo to add to my collection and will pick them up in Geneva).

Ok, so what are we looking at here?

I believe the draping is deliberately constructed to give us a hint as to what we’re looking at. Obviously, showing some color and vehicle feature is part of the ploy.

Closest to ‘camera’ we have the Saab 9-5 wagon. No prizes there.

Furthest from camera we have the Saab Design Concept that they’ll unveil there to show the general direction that Saab Design will take under Jason Castriota. That car’s completely unknown, hence the drapery hiding absolutely everything.

That leaves two other cars in the middle.

My guess is that the second car, in a shade of what looks to be almost an orange-red color, is the Saab 9-3 Independence Edition convertible. The color of that vehicle is ‘Sunset Red’ and that orangey-red color looks very sunsettish to me.

I predicted a NY Auto Show debut for that one as it’s expected to go on sale in May. Given that Independence Day is this month, however, maybe it’s pointless holding the vehicle beyond Geneva.

The third vehicle?

Possibly the Griffin Edition Saab 9-3 that we might see MY2011.5?

I don’t know, but it’ll sure be one hell of an interesting show.

Chicago Autoshow

February 11, 2011 in Saabology

UPDATE III: Tonight there will be the “First look for Charity” taking place in Chicago. It will start at 7:00pm CST.
I’m going to bed, but here is a live-cam of the Saab booth.

UPDATE II: Saab 9-4x

UPDATE: Hirsch US début.

Today started the press days of the Chicago auto show. On Friday the show will be open to the public.

I don’t know if SaabNA is there or if a dealership of the Chicago area has stepped in, but Saab will be there in a 7.856 sq ft (~711 m²) display surface.

From the Chicago auto show site you can see that the 9-3, the 9-3X and the 9-5 will be on the booth. They will be placed between Jaguar/LR and Mini, which is not bad imho.

Here is the floor-plan.

Looking at the media schedule, it looks like Saab is making no press presentation.

If anybody is going there, feel free to send some photos.

Leftlanenews.com have a first set of photos of the Saab booth.

As Chris says the 9-4x is also on the booth, as well as Hirsch modified Saabs.

Here some footage from the Saab booth live cam.

yes it is a 9-4x, and yes it looks good from this angle.
