SaabCarsNA forecast for 2011

Lately Automotive News had an Interview with Kurt Schirm, the SCNA Dealer Council head.

One day later (February, 7) SCNA had a meeting with the dealers at the NADA convention in San Francisco. And according to another article at Automotive News SCNA had a lot to tell.

Sales

SCNA is forecasting 15.000 till 20.000 sales in the US this year. They hope the 9-4X, which will arrive in May will help reach this figures.

Portfolio

Saab showed its dealers a picture of 16 different vehicles that are being considered for the Saab portfolio.[In summer 2011 Saab will have 7 different vehicles in its portfolio]

Dealers at the meeting say there was a hatchback model that might be a 9-3 variant. It had a Porsche-like rear with a fin, said one dealer.

Another vehicle was a sports car.

“I saw it and said, ‘Wow, now that’s a Saab!’” said Lynn Thompson, general manager of Saab of Southwest Missouri, Springfield, Mo. “It was something cool.”

Dealerships

Saab wants to rebuild its dealer network. One of the possibilities is adding well performing multi brand dealers.

New promotion

Saab will send/has send promotion kits to its dealers for a new promotion called “Independence Day” to celebrate the first anniversary since Spyker purchased Saab.

The sales forecast is the expected one. To reach 80.000 units world wide they need to retail between 50.000 and 60.000 units in the three big markets S,UK,US.

16 different vehicles is quite a lot, it would be interesting to know which of them can be build on Phoenix, and which require a different platform.

is leasing part of the plan? Volvo finally got back into the game, wondering if Saab can pull it off too…

I wonder if they asked dealers if diesels were of interest in the US. MB is bringing several new diesels, VW has always done very well with them, BMW and Audi have a few and SAAB diesels are doing great in Europe now…

Diesels would be a great addition to the states. I drive about 35k miles a year and the only reason I think about giving up my 9-3 is for a diesel that would improve my mileage by about 30% or so. It’s been nice to finally see some advertising start to pop up.

It would be intersting to see the numbers for Canada … given that Canada is the “North” in Saab Cars North America. If they are forecasting 15-20K units in the US, Canada must be somewhere in the 1500 units (just using the normailization of 10x for the US market). Unfortuantely, 1500 units would put Canada over 1/2 of where we were when we set a sales record in 2006. Add to the fact that we have dropped from 29 dealers at that time to just 12. As I said, it would be nice to know what the forecast is …… Read more »

Hi Scott,
on the 4. of February I wrote an article on an interview of Victor Mueller in Canada.com
On the original article there was a citation of John Anderson

John Anderson, executive director of sales in North America, hopes to grow the dealer network to about 25 stores and sell about 2,500 cars this year.

Back then I thought that 2.500 units was not that much, but if Saabs sales record in 2006 was about 3.000 units, then 2.500 would be quite unrealistic, even with 25 stores.

As I wrote too, in response, I think some reality needs to be injected in the sales forecast for Canada (lest we become laughing stock and press jump all over– Canadian journalists are no different from Swedish in this respect). Better to under-promise and over-deliver. I’d say we’re (unfortunately) on target for 500 cars this year (and I’m talking about sales to end customer/drivers not this nonsense of ‘Sales To Dealers’). If we make 1000 + then shout from the rooftops and crack the bubbly. Not until. SaabScott (as long time President of the Saab Club of Canada) I know… Read more »

I totally agree with you in regard of sales number. Better to aim low and shoot high in that way. 😉
