Diesel car sales evolution in Sweden and its consequences

March 29, 2011 in News

During the last few days BILSweden has made public 2 statistics that may not seem related to each other, but in fact they are linked to another.

The first has the title:
Sex av tio nya bilar är dieslar i Västra Götalands län
(Six out of ten new cars are diesles in the Västra Götalands region)

It talks about how the sales of diesel cars have increased over the last years.

Diesel and E85 car sales increased from 2006 till 2008 while petrol(Bensin) sales decreased accordingly. But from 2008 diesel cars became more interesting (maybe because oil prices reached it’s maximum of about 140$ per barrel that year).

Since then diesel sales dominate the field reaching the current 60% value, not only in that region but in the whole country.

The increase of diesel sales helped Sweden reduce its CO2 emissions from new cars.

- The sharp increase in diesel share, not least of diesels with emissions of 120 grams per km, has been a major contributing factor to the average carbon dioxide emissions from new cars has fallen by 20 percent during the past four years, “said Bertil Molden president of CAR Sweden.

But today a new statistic has been published.

Koldioxidutsläppen från nya bilar lägre än vad de officiella värdena visar
(Carbon dioxide emissions from new cars are lower than the official values show)

PeriodOfficially value CO2 g / kmFair value (fossil CO2 g / km)
2005 194 179
2006 189 169
2007 181 160
2008 174 139
2009 164 133
2010 151 134

As we can see the official values decrease, while the “fair” values, which take into account the difference between fossil fuels and renewable fuels, reached a minimum in 2009.

The official method does not take into account whether the fuels are fossil or renewable. For example, counts as ethanol gasoline and bio-gas as natural gas, which overstates the actual emissions. The official value of new cars carbon dioxide emissions, which Transport Agency has reported to the European Commission, declined from 164 grams / km during 2009-151 g / km in 2010, which is a record decrease for one year. The fair value, taking into account the lower emissions from biofuels was under BIL Sweden calculations on largely unchanged, in 2010, 134 g / km. The reason that the fair value did not decline was a decline in the proportion of newly registered passenger cars of ethanol, due to uncertainty about the benefit of these cars after 1 January 2012.

I hope diesel gets a little bit more expensive during this year, maybe then people will start reconsidering E85 once again, and the Swedish politicians will leave E85 cars as “green cars” for another couple of years.

Saab Production Hiccup

March 29, 2011 in News

If you haven’t seen it already, you probably will– reports are coming in that Saab production halted today. When we have more information that’s worth reporting and not speculation from third parties, we’ll report it right away. Not doing so would be irresponsible on our part. Until we know officially who or what exactly caused the problem, as always I’ll remind you to do what Swade so eloquently advised.

Tuesday Snippets: JÅJ and VM talk product

March 29, 2011 in Editorial, News

While we’ve been talking a lot about Jan Åke’s retirement, Vladimir’s intent to invest in the company, and how certain members of the Swedish press feels that Victor is the antichrist, we may have lost sight of what really matters– the cars. Consummate professionals that they are, Victor and Jan Åke continue to talk to the responsible members of the press about the business plan. They confirm things we already know, but also leak new details about the ePower lineup, partnerships, and drivetrains. Also I take a stab at playing angel’s advocate to Robert Collin and Co.’s devil’s advocate and speculate on another outcome that isn’t often discussed here– the ramifications of Saab’s success on production and partnerships (something I hope we’ll be able to do a lot more of soon).

As you can also see, I’m incoporating an introductory graphic as a quick visual representation of what’s covered so you can get an idea what you’re in for…

E85 cheaper than normal fuel

March 29, 2011 in News

The Swedish news site E24 has a nice story featuring the fuel E85 Ethanol and how this winter it has been cheaper for E85 users to actually drive on E85 rather than normal gasoline. Normally during the winter the price of E85 goes up due to the fact that petrol companies are mixing in more petrol into E85 to compensate for cold weather. E85 has some bad drawbacks at temperatures of -5°C or lower.

According to Mattias Goldmann, who is a spokesman at Gröna Bilister (Green Motorists) the average difference in price has been about 1 SEK per 10 km. Normally E85 that difference increases during the summer period when the amount of petrol in E85 is reduced from 30% to 15%. The lowest price of E85 in Sweden last summer could be found on the Swedish west coast at 6,79 SEK / Liter, the normal petrol price (RON 95) at the same period and same service station was 12,39 SEK / Liter.

Mr. Goldmann also sees a nice trend in drivers choosing E85 more or an environmental reason rather than just price clearly showing that people today are more concerned about the environment.

________________________

This article above is great news for SAAB since the best E85 engines in the world are produced by SAAB. I have driven a lot of different E85 cars from other brands and SAAB beats them in fuel consumption and power in all aspects! I have been driving on E85 for the past 5 years and never used petrol during that time regardless of how cold it got during the winter.

Robert Collin wants Swedish youths to peel bananas

March 28, 2011 in Editorial

JÅJ’s recent announcement has naturally caused quite a stir in our community. My soapbox is small, but I will deploy it nonetheless.

Certain stories have surfaced in the Swedish press, and many have been discussed in comments.

This calls for a summary.

First of all, there was a TV interview (TV4) which didn’t come up with anything really new. They like to remind us that Saab has never earned any money (despite what people close to Saab may say) and people who buy Saabs are like cult-members who only buy them to support the factory. Oh, and Robert Collin again claimed JÅJ and VM had a shaky relationship based on a raised eyebrow and supposed eye roll during a dinner last Fall. Robert already predicted the 9-5 would not sell over a year ago. Now we are told it won’t sell because JÅJ is leaving Saab. And of course, it’s still too big. It strikes me as funny how my MY11 9-5 isn’t too big, but I guess I got one of the few good ones?

Also present at that fateful dinner was our own Swade. Swade writes:

Well, I was at the same dinner and I can tell you that I have no recollection at all of VM leaving significantly early at all. (…)Well, I was at the same dinner and I can tell you that I have no recollection at all of VM leaving significantly early at all. The fact that he might have wanted to get back a little earlier might have had something to do with his recovery from some surgery he had not long before.(…)So to anyone who wants to take the opportunity to give Victor a backhander, I say there are two sides to every story and you ought to make sure you get both.

The same event. Two different accounts. Who do you trust more?

As for Robert’s “cult” reference– it’s unfair and uncalled for. Personally, I bought my first Saab as late as 2008. The 9-3 SC was then the safest car in its class according to folksam.se. Granted, the following year Folksam reduced the 9-3′s rating, giving it the same score as other European brands, but it still remains one of very few models that have been tested for moose impacts. I drive a lot through moose infested areas, and I need this extra safety. I also require Saab’s excellent winter skills. Saabs usually win when magazines compare cars in the winter. The 9-5 that I bought last year is no exception. I drive 720 km every week on some of the worst winter roads imaginable. I know from experience that a Volvo V50 can’t cope properly with such conditions. Saab 9-3, 9000 and 9-5 on the other hand can. With ease. The “too big” 9-5 is extremely comfy, and it is difficult not to smile as I’m able to dig through parts of the road that seems to stump others.

In short, TV4′s coverage painted a very bleak picture of Saab. It would not surprise me if Saab eventually drowns because of the Swedish press alone. It is no longer a question about them being right or not, it is a question of why they so desperately want to bury the company with its thousands of jobs and likely the entire city of Trollhättan. Swedish people should feel upset with their one sided journalists, because otherwise… perhaps Swedish youths peeling bananas in Norway is the answer? Does that sound like a fun and interesting job? Is that really an improvement over working for the evil entrepreneur Victor Muller? At least he’s trying to create something of value.

SAAB of the week – Ziggy and Benta

March 28, 2011 in Sotw

Ah, monday– a new week! It’s time for Saab of the Week.
This time we head over to sunny Santa Barbara, CA.

Dear SU family,

I fell in love with SAAB back in 1991 with the purchase of my first Saab, a 1978 99 Turbo. Since than I have owned more than 7 SAABS including the venerable 1997 SAAB 9000 Aero.

Fast forward to 2008. My wife and I plan on updating our motoring fleet. Of course our taste is very similar. I want a 9-5 in silver and so does she. We end up driving home two gorgeous CPO 9-5′s, one being an Aero (2006 Sport) and the other with a 5 speed. Our Saab children are affectionately known as Ziggy and Benta. My wife Nicola and I hail from Santa Barbara, CA. Keep up the good work SU!

All the Best,

Seb

The Depreciation Myth

March 28, 2011 in Editorial

Recently I’ve been noticing a few comments here and other sites claiming how Saabs depreciate much faster than their competitors. Like others who visit this site, I’m sick of seeing the words “loss-making” in front of Saab’s name. So when I heard people attaching those words to the cars themselves, I decided it was time to research the validity of that statement. I posted this in comments but I think it deserves its own space on the site for the official record.

I know for many of our American readers it’s getting towards tax time and you may not want to crunch any more numbers, but don’t be afraid– I promise you’ll enjoy the results after the break. Read the rest of this entry →

E24 interview with Nils-Johan Andersson

March 27, 2011 in News

Love Strandberg at the swedish news website E24 have made an interview with Nils-Johan Andersson who was supposed to start at SAAB a while ago but then decided to stay at Lindab.

“In the middle of february Lindabs CFO Nils-Johan Andersson resigned in order to start at SAAB Automobile. But just a couple of days ago Andersson announced that he had changed his mind. The decision has nothing to do with the fact that Jan-Åke Jonsson now has decided to step down. That JAJ would step down was no news for Andersson, he has know about this since the beginning of the year.

The reason why N-J Andersson wanted to SAAB, where he would also take on the position as vice CEO, was that he want more responsibility, he has acted as CFO in the construction material company for 12 years now.

The reason for his change of heart is that Andersson was offered the position as manager for the company’s largest section, ventilation.

- I thought it was interesting to become responsible for about 60% Lindab’s total production. It is a very exciting business-area with a lot of focus on environment and energy in the future.

- This decision has nothing to do with the changes made at SAAB

The plan was that N-J Andersson would start at SAAB in may so he has not had the time to spend any time at SAAB yet. He has however had time to go through the busniess-plan with Victor Muller and Jan-Åke Jonsson. On the question if it was the business-plan that deterred you from starting at SAAB N-J answers in the following way:

- No, No. The business-plan was the base for my decision to take the job at SAAB.”

2011 New York International Auto Show Update

March 27, 2011 in News

In less than a month, I’ll be reporting again for SaabsUnited at the New York International Auto Show. Last year, you’ll remember Saab’s stand was next to GM in the place where Hummer would have been if GM hadn’t decided to shut them down. It was squeezed way in the back, behind Acura and Hyundai, next to Scion. In other words, it looked like a forgotten brand, with barely enough room for 4 cars.

This year, it looks like they’ve received a major upgrade. Read the rest of this entry →

The land of “Lagom” has its exceptions

March 26, 2011 in Editorial

(Or -:I will get critique.. But hey that’s cool, I´m toying with stereotypes)

“Lagom” is a word only used in the Swedish language and constructed to explain how Swedes ought to be brought up and look upon Everything we do in life. How much we eat, how much we work, how much se(… how babies are made) we have. Well, we may do what everybody else in the world does as long as we do it with moderation.

“Lagom”= To not do something to excess. For doing the latter would be showing off and that is So not Swedish.

I am a typical Swede that grew up in typical Swedish suburbia in a typical small Swedish town in a typical Swedish upper/middle class family with a Saab car outside in the driveway and at times there were two.

-:Oh, you forgot the “typical” at the end there Tompa… No I did not. And here´s the reason why:

Victor wants a Swedish CEO

March 26, 2011 in Uncategorized

According to DI (Dagens Industri) Victor Muller wants a swede to replace Jan-Åke Jonsson as CEO in SAAB Automobile.

“We have made a profile and it has to be someone from the auto-industry with very good knowledge in how a car-manufacturer works. And it also has to be a very good manager, preferably swedish but not necessary.”
