Saab & Volvo perhaps affected by the events in Japan

March 17, 2011 in News

UPDATED WITH INFORMATION FROM HIROKI M. OF SAAB CLUB JAPAN:

Hi,

I know about “Saab in Japan” from Marco in Finland on SaabsUnited site.
Fortunately, I and my family are OK. I don’t live near where the earthquake and tsunami hit.
Most club members are OK, but I do not know whether some members are all right.
The damage by this earthquake is wide too greatly and very serious, so the whole is not clear.
Many people lose their house and there is uncountable refuges.
There are dead 4,000, missing 20,000, refuge 410,000.
However most people keeps order calmly.

Please keep the people of Japan and our friends of the Saab Club Japan in your thoughts and if you’re able, give a donation to any number of the charities looking to help.

Thanks Lars for the email

From a Google-translation:

From Webfinanser.com a swedish finance website…

Volvo is managing its production of cars this week without disruption due to the earthquake disaster in Japan, but then it is unclear what will happen. The big Japanese car makers have basically stopped all production at the moment, but do not expect any major delays in Swedish deliveries. But there is uncertainty about energy supply in the country, according to calls Business Car Facts have made.

Wednesday Night Snippets

March 17, 2011 in Saabology

The time is 22:15 here in Sweden and its about -7°C outside. We have received a huge amount of letters offering help, support and some really great stories from you guys. And we want more! =)

Anyway here are wednesday nights snippets:

FROM GERMANY

Saab

a google Trans:

Saab lets user create on-line banner

Saab goes with the creation of on-line banners new ways. To raise the click rates, the car manufacturer lets for the first time on develop Facebook web-advertising formats of users. The only default: They should be held in the design of the topical campaign in the USA “The story of Saab”.

The automaker will switch the best works, among the rest, on the sides of the New York Times, AOL and Wired. Has developed the idea the team Saab of the McCann Worldgroup in Detroit. The decision-makers hope that eager Saab fans spread the idea on the social networks worldwide.

For Todd Turner, boss of the consulting firm coach Concept, this is a right step. Saab has currently problems with the visibility. “Saab problems are not the customers or the people who know Saab. The problem are the people who do not know the brand.”

A big thank you to Mark.

FROM USA

Saab USA Parts have a very good story covering the Geneva Auto-show, click here.

Thanx to Fred Shaw for the link =)

FACEBOOK

I’m very happy to announce that our start-up on facebook got a very good response. In the first 6 hours 390 people had “liked” us on Facebook, thats more than one every minute!!!. There were a few comments about adding a “Like” button on the posts on SaabsUnited and that will happen, but first when the server has moved from Australia to Sweden due to technical reasons… All your ideas are very welcome =)

SWEDEN

It seams that Saab Sweden has had some problems with their website, graphical problems with the spinning 9-5 SC and also enlarged interior images of the 9-3 anniversary model end up in dead links going nowhere…

This weekend

I will be out working friday-tuesday so the rest of the guys are left in charge. I’m flying an Airbus A321 from Gothenburg to Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) on friday morning. On saturday we’re taking another Airbus A321 from there to Stavanger on the Norwegian west coast and back to Gran Canaria. On sunday we’re switching island to Fuerteventura and on monday flying another Airbus A321 back to Gothenburg and then futher on to Malmö in the south of Sweden and then a nice train-ride back home… =)

On the SaabsUnited front look out for a very interesting post from Tompa this weekend!!! =)

“It was because of Saab” Dimitri & Frederic

March 17, 2011 in Saabology

A weekly feature we would like to start is one I’m going to call ”It was because of Saab”.

A story about how you met your partner, was it because of Saab? or met a life long friend, or anything that you can think off that may come within the title.

If you have a story you would like to tell, please email it to the crew for publication. Send a few pictures along if you have them and we will publish it so the whole of SaabsUnited can have a read.

The first story comes from Dimitri and Fred who live in Switzerland and are the proud owners of about 16 Saabs as well as a couple of other makes.

Autocar Report: Saab developing all new platform

March 16, 2011 in News

A report from Autocar says that Saab will be scrapping it’s existing Epsilon 9-3 platform in favor of an entirely “new” platform. To be fair, Saab has said that it was a heavily revised Epsilon platform that would become the Phoenix architecture, but recently we’ve been hearing comments from executives saying that it would be an “all new modular architecture.”

I’d actually like to go back and really take note of Jan Ake’s speech from Geneva, and some of his comments. He highlighted how important distribution was, but also the new Phoenix platform. Starting at around 3:13 of the conference video:

“Seldom have we been able here in Geneva to present so many new products as we’re doing today…2012 will then be the year of the new 9-3, and this is the time when we will have the opportunity to show to you what an independent Saab organization can do, technically, with architectures that are flexible, modular, very appealing design, but also vehicles and cars that are drivers cars where our definition of performance, with safety, practical vehicles utilizing small displacement turbocharged engines that generate very low emissions will be the cornerstone of the Saab brand as we go into the future.”

We’ve known for some time that the new platform was expandable, but this article gives us a nice analogy to understand how the process will work. Imagine it’s like a Nikon F lens mount system, where individual parts use “fixed” interfaces so that down the road they’re easily upgradable and future proof– a lesson they’ve learned from none other than Scania.

Needless to say this is expected news, but it’s nice to hear some details continue to pour out. The real information is the suspension system, which autocar says will use a unique McPherson strut design and a new “race-car” style five-link rear axle made by get this– ZF– at a new plant in Sweden. If true, this is pretty big and exciting news. By tossing out the Epsilon/GM platform in favor of a true Saab solution, critics can no longer argue that Saab isn’t standing on its own feet. By aligning themself with ZF, they’re once again huddling up with the big boys of the auto world as they did with the BMW engine deal; Saab is staking a claim to true competitive performance. Phoenix up.

Cruise Season is Here

March 16, 2011 in Saabology

One of the ways Swade earned his place as the guru of Saab blogging was his ability to unite our community during the sale through exhaustive reporting of support convoys. In that same spirit, we want to continue his legacy and encourage you to send in your stories about your own gatherings from around the world. It’s one thing to enjoy a Saab by yourself, it’s another to realize you’re part of an exclusive group of ridiculously good looking people who drive them (alright, that may be taking it a little far, but I stand by the exclusive part). You may occasionally get a nod or wave from a Saab driver passing by, but sharing your bond as part of a group drive is an experience every one of us should try at least once.

Always a hotbed for Saab activity, the first convoy of spring comes from New England courtesy of Luke L. who has officially kicked off the Saab Road Cruise Season. Click through the break to read his account and see some great photos of the event that wound through coastal Rhode Island, the smallest state in the US.

German Snippets

March 16, 2011 in Saabology

TimR has presented me as the German part of SaabsUnited, and as such I will take care of the German speaking Saab market, and maybe other things. ;-)

So let’s get started with some snippets.

I promised Swade I would get this on-line. It is from Till72

Hi Swade,
I met with Alexandros yesterday and we intend to establish a regular Saab “Stammtisch” for Munich and the region. Those who are interested please contact me via till (at) tilldrescher.de so we can set a first date and location.

Munich Saabers get in contact with Till72.

And talking about Till72, he and me are preparing and interview with Mr. Schumacher, and I’m not talking about the F1-driver. I’m talking about JPS (Jan-Philipp Schumacher), the new Country Director for Germany.

Don’t worry, I will try to get some interviews with the country directors from Switzerland and Austria.

I don’t think I will do this many more times, but once should be OK.

Since Geneva I’ve been reading a German Saab Blog, which I like very much.

So, if you have already read all the posts at SaabsUnited, and you speak the German language, and you are still searching for new Saab information, you may take a look at saabblog.net, they have at least another point of view.

And at last, Germany has got only 20 9-3 Independence Edition, although they are only 20 the German dealers were allowed to order the Full Monty. In the list you can find the TTiD180 engine and the Bio-Power 220 engine with either a manual or an automatic gearbox.

Not like the UK or Spain, where only the TTiD 180 diesel engine with an automatic transmission will be delivered.

So, lets get started!

March 16, 2011 in Uncategorized

First off I’d like to thank Swade for many great years of maintaining a great website and building a great community. And for me and the new SaabsUnited team keeping this community together and thriving is going to be a big but fun mission and we are very eager to get started =)

Some new stuff will happen right away like the new banner you see above:

- Weekly events will take place, for example yesterday we introduced again Saab of the Week, more to come! =)

- Forum, this is a direct question to all of you readers, do you want a forum at SaabsUnited, if so we are going to provide you with one!

- Buy & Sell will be introduced where you can place an add for anything you would like to sell or buy and of course it will be totally free of charge!

- The SU-Shop is going to expand and we are right now working on items both with SaabsUnited logo on it and we are also hoping to be allowed to sell SaabExpression items on-line directly via SaabsUnited. Other companies selling Saab-related items are very welcome to add their products as well =)

- New sponsors, several new sponsors have expressed interest in investing in the website with both products and money to fund various trips for our “reporters”. BUT there will be NO major increase in the amount of advertising seen on the website!

- The visitors of the website will be engaged a lot more in the content of the website with polls and interesting topics that will be discussed.

- We also have some great interviews coming up which will bring a lot of interesting reading! =)

Peter S. is working a lot on the new server, it is in place and installed, the backup servers is next on the list. An upgrade of the internet connection to a 100/100 Mbit connection is also next on the list. A lot of beta-testing will also take place prior to the move. Expect the move to Trollhättan in about 2-3 weeks time.

If you have any other suggestions about what to use SaabsUnited for please do not hesitate to express your ideas either in the comments or send them in an e-mail to saabsunitedcrew@gmail.com

One more thing we just love here at SaabsUnited is to receive driver-stories, we have a few coming up shortly but we would like to have a lot more. Why is it you drive the car you drive and what do you like/dislike about it? We would also like to get photos and stories about where you use your car, no place on the Earth is without a story and if a Saab is present, well that makes the story even more interesting =)

One last shot for me, too.

March 16, 2011 in Editorial, Troll Stuff

Well, since I’ve not been around much of late, it’s as if I really ended my involvement with SU some nine or ten months ago.  My time pressures will get no better in the next few months, and so I will no longer be around much, either.  Like Swade, I’ll have new challenges work wise and with a planned house move on the horizon,  Saab networking online will be taking a back seat.  I’ll get a number of hours more actually driving the convertible rather than writing about it.  I may pop in from time to time with some photos, but that’s the extent of it for now.

Thanks for everyone, especially Steven, for allowing me to participate.  It’s been loads of fun and I’ve enjoyed all of it.  If you take just a day or two in Steven’s seat, you gain an immediate appreciation for the man and you gain perspective on the prodigious amount of time required to operate SaabUnited.  It is overwhelming.

Special thanks to Andy, Grippen, Greg and Golfhunter for ideas and information.  Special thanks to Robin for all of the excellent photos and the spirit.

Also, thanks to Mike Colleran, Steve Shannon, Pierre Belperron, Marty Adams, and the late Jan-Willem Vester for being such gracious hosts.  It is not forgotten.

——————————

P.S. I’ve been saving a screed about how auto dealer compensation is not aligned with consumer interest, but this simply isn’t the time for it to appear here.  I’ve posted it on my own (nearly defunct) blog site if you’re interested in my thoughts.

Goodbye and thanks to Saabs United – hello new world!

March 15, 2011 in Editorial

Wow. After six years, it’s time for me to sign off from Saabs United.

My thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts, comments and emails since the announcement was made that I’d be leaving SU (thanks to RedJ for the banner that’s been up for the last few days, too).

It wouldn’t be a true Saab story, however, if there wasn’t another twist in the tale…..

I’ve mentioned previously that my decision to leave Saabs United is due to me having too many balls to juggle all at once. My regular job, my family and my work with Saabs United were too much to fit into one personal 24 hour period. Something had to change and the first change was to sell Saabs United. I’m pleased to be able to tell you that it’s not the only change that’s taking place, however.

My regular job was getting in the way of my Saab duties, so I’ve set my regular job aside.

Saab Automobile are going to take some very big steps in bringing the company closer to their customers. Saab has hired me to be involved, as part of a global team, in a sustained social media presence that will see Saab presented from an inside view, allowing you access to company events, key people and of course, the cars themselves – in a way that no bigger car company can do.

We will aim to create relationships between the company and the community that supports it, giving you greater access to the company and the types of experiences that Saab are already known for.

Saab are very appreciative of all the community support they’ve received and they want to build on that relationship and give something back. It’s a very exciting challenge and one that I can’t wait to sink my teeth into.

There will be a press release from Saab in a few hours from now. Exciting times!

——

The following is a note I received today from Victor Muller, who asked me to share it here as part of this post.

Steven,

It is a given that you have played a key role in saving Saab last year by mobilizing tens of thousands of enthusiasts to rally in support of the company. You have single handedly proven the importance social media has nowadays in situations like the one Saab went through. You became one of my most powerful allies in those trying times which now are fortunately behind us.

We have learned that with the right approach, a brand can be activated in ways which were inconceivable just a few years ago. As a result we have made you an offer to come and work for us at Saab so as to allow you to dedicate your talents to the company which made it in part also because of you.

I thank you for what you did as Saabsunited and welcome you to Saab Automobile, where you will continue to unite all of us who cherish this iconic brand.

I wish the new owner of Saabs United and his committed crew all the success in the world and am confident that they will manage to enthuse countless avid Saabisti to support our brand and company in the years to come.

Victor

——

I have a whole bunch of thankyous to give here as part of my sign off. It just wouldn’t be right to finish up here without recognising the people who have provided support along the way.

This is a long list, so buckle up.

Press Release: Saab Automobile Hires Saab Blogger Steven Wade

March 15, 2011 in News

Um….. Wow.

  • Wade to join Saab Automobile’s global Interactive Marketing team
  • Appointment adds to company expertise in social media marketing

Trollhättan, Sweden: Building on recent successes, Saab Automobile today announced the further strengthening of its global Interactive Marketing department by appointing Steven Wade to its social media marketing team. Wade joins the company effective April 4, and will be based in Melbourne, Australia. He will be part of the global Saab Interactive Marketing team at Saab Automobile.

Wade gained worldwide recognition as founder and editor-in-chief of the website SaabsUnited. Through his website, Wade played a pivotal role in rallying support around the globe for the Saab brand during negotiations for its sale by General Motors. In reaching out to Saab enthusiasts in this unique way, Wade gained invaluable insights in how to communicate with customers through social media, something that Saab Automobile will leverage to the fullest extent with Steven on the team. The website SaabsUnited will, under new independent leadership, continue to play an important role for Saab and its customers.

Announcing the appointment, Mårten Wahlstedt, Director of Saab Marketing Communications, said: “I am delighted to welcome Steven to the team here at Saab Automobile. Engaging with customers through interactive channels and social media such as Facebook and YouTube is of the utmost importance for us. Social media play a major role in the Saab marketing mix, which is why we are keen to strengthen our expertise in this area.

“In recent times, Saab has received enormous interest from the online community. During our Independence Day celebrations on February 23, we added more than a thousand fans per hour on Saab’s official Facebook page. Also, the recently released YouTube videos on the new 9-5 SportCombi and the IQon in-car infotainment system were viewed more than 100,000 times within only a few days of release. I am confident that by bringing in Steven, we can build on these recent successes.”
