It definitely looks like an Astra. The old rumor was that the 9-3 would be on Delta-platform like the new Astra and Cruze. We’ll do some digging.

I’m not so sure of what I think about this… from these pics, I definitely don’t lust for it.

What do you mean with ‘Saabs markings’? The camouflage style?

Perhaps some testing being done for GM. Was it inside Saab’s facilities per se, or one of the suppliers / auxilliary units (such as eAAM)?

Are these photos confirmed to be from the factory? The Astra is actually a nice entry level car, but it is entry level. If this has anything to do with Saab and I do mean if, there would be a lot of work to do to make it a Saab. I’m not buying into this having anything to do with anything though.

We already saw an Opel at Saab, I think it was early 2010. At that time the car was coming from the northern tests.
OTOH, AFAIK, Saab Powertrain is still in charge of the 1.4 Turbo engine from GM.

Or
and this is just speculating, the chassis guys from Opel asked the Guys from Saab to give them their opinion about the road handling of the car.

Hope this is not what VM meant when he said GM would be surprised! 😉

Lighten up guys, and don’t jump to conclusions… The good news between the lines is that they indeed are developing new stuff, and testing it on the road. Whatever shape or form the actual test mule has is really irrelevant, underneith could be the most innovative technology for future powertrains or suspensions, or even IQON 2.0 for that matter.

It’s an “old” car.
This vehicle was spotted a year ago, and was said the Opel (Vauxhall/Saturn/whatever) Astra GTC, which makes sense, timewise.

Sometimes I am wondering why the “turbo pioneer” (aka Saab) didn’t design any smaller displacement turbo engine (and smaller cars) besides the mass produced 2 and 2.3 liter ones. They should have done it at least a decade ago. They had developed a prototype of a 1.6lt engine in the past but it was never used. That left plenty of room to other manufacturers (VW, Fiat, Opel, etc), to dominate gradually the European market. And now Saab pays the price for not adjusting to the current automotive trend. Big cars and big engines are not of course an issue in… Read more »

The interesting part here is that someone with a helmet was driving the Astra just yesterday. VA and VM want the 9-2 and Saab has a free license to the Astra platform. They should be comparing the Mini to what they would have if they put the Mini license dollars into the Astra. They did wonders to the Vectra platform with my 9-5.
