“It was because of Saab”:- And SU

April 28, 2011 in Saabology, Uncategorized

“It was because of Saab”.

A story about how you met your partner, was it because of Saab? or met a life long friend, or anything that you can think off that may come
within the title.

If you have a story you would like to tell, please email it to the crew for publication. Send a few pictures along if you have them and we will publish it so the whole of SaabsUnited can have a read.

This weeks story comes from our friend 74stingray.

It was January of 2009 when my love of Saab began.

Updated: VM and JÅJ possibly heading to Hong Kong

April 28, 2011 in News

di.se bumped into VM and JÅJ at the airport (English translation).

DI met Victor Muller and Jan Åke Jonsson at Arlanda airport (Stockholm) Wednesday evening, outside the check-in counter for Helsinki, possibly a transfer point for further east-bound travel. Both declined to comment on their journey.

It looks to me that DI are speculating about Saab’s existing connections with BAIC. Helsinki happens to be a major hub, so our team could be travelling to any number of destinations (and not necessarily even the same destination…).

Update: ttela.se reports (English translation) that Saab are meeting four potential partners in China. The goal is to license out parts of the technology developed for the Phoenix.

Thanks Tobias and Audun for the heads-up!

One more thought from Robert Collin

April 27, 2011 in Editorial

Vladimir and Vladimir vs analysis from Robert, Aftonbladet.se

Full Aftonbladet article here

“I wonder if it’s a coincidence that Putin is here at the same time as Antonov is in final negotiations regarding Saab.

I can hardly believe that.

No, I’m guessing that Putin is equally interested in Saab as Antonov. Just as the Chinese state is behind the nouveau riche Li Shofu and the Volvo deal, I believe that the Russian government wants the Saab deal to go through.

Antonov repeatedly mentions that he wants to open a Saab factory in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad by the Baltic Sea, and Russia needs both jobs and cars.
I think Vladimir will fix the deal. At the last minute. I´m keeping my fingers crossed.”

Do I agree? I don´t know, not all of it, but it is a valid thought and well, Robert is right when it comes to the need for jobs.

Robert… Fancy a spot of lunch? :-)

Cheers/Tom

just-auto.com: Comment from EIB’s Eva Srejber

April 27, 2011 in News

just-auto.com shares this comment received on e-mail from Eva Srejber:

We are not a liquidity provider. Liquidity financing must come from the company’s cash flow, commercial banks or other sources.

Which seems odd, because Saab’s original request was to cap the size of the loan. In return they asked the Swedish government to reduce the hold on the collateral Saab put up a year ago.

The original request reduced the risks involved while injecting fresh money into the running of Saab. It would most definitively qualify as “other sources”.

E24: Some suppliers might lay off people

April 27, 2011 in News

E24 reports that some suppliers are discussing their options.

But they [an unnamed supplier] were discussing layoffs?

– Yes, layoffs and cutbacks.

Svenåke Berglie thinks Saab needs to come up with a solution within the next few days so layoffs can be avoided.

This news is not particulary fresh. We all know it would come to this if the production did not resume soon. The stakes are higher than “just” the people working for Saab in Trollhättan. The tax payers stand to loose a lot of money, but not to Saab the company as is commonly believed. This misconception has been allowed to fester too long and hopefully the Swedish government will help Saab survive rather than waste money on windmills (what a silly thing for me to write, but I was not the one who made the windmill-suggestion in the first place).

TTela: SAAB turns their back on EIB

April 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

From TTela.se (English translation)

According to Lars Carlström, Saab is very close to a solution to its financial problems, I have good hopes about this, but these feelings are not thanks to the EIB or the Swedish government. “We are working on other solutions, no point in wasting our time with the EIB.”

A couple of hundred attorneys are working with the process of selling Saab’s facilities and this is a cost that the company will have to pay for.

It is a cost of aprox 20-30 million SEK according to Carlström.

“The production stop also costs huge amounts of money, a couple of hundred million SEK, which is absolutely crazy and creates great harm to the society,” he added.

Getting an approval of Vladimir Antonov from the EIB is nothing Lars Carlström is betting on.

“If the EIB is involved this thing could take years. They are very far from finished with such a simple task as the sale of the facilities, I have no faith in that part at all…” Carlström said.

So at the very least, it’s good to hear that Saab is working on its own solutions that don’t depend on the EIB. Hopefully these statements are just a tactic to put pressure on the EIB through other channels, considering the Eva Schreiber of the EIB has said that they are willing to agree to Saab’s terms pending GM approval.

Not one more word about tax-payer money…

April 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

DN.se:

According to Lars Carlström who is Vladimir Antonov’s spokesperson in Sweden, Vladimir is very happy with how the meeting progressed between him and the NDO’s (Riksgälden) manager Bo Lundgren.

“Vladimir feels very hopeful after the meeting and feels that the NDO has confidence in him,” he said.
“There has been a lot of rumors about him and he feels that the NDO has done an outstanding job with the Saab-issues and the part that involves himself as a person,” Carlstrom added.

On the other hand Vladimir Antonov and his colleagues feel disappointed that some leading Swedish ministers keep saying that Saab needs the tax payers’ money to survive. And also they keep mentioning that the support the company has received already has tax payer money in it.
“Late last night Anders Borg talked in the same way as Maud Olofsson does, that this issue is about the tax-payers money. We are worried about the lack of knowledge in basic math with the government,” said Carlström.

SaabsUnited Exclusive: Production Preparations

April 27, 2011 in News

As reported earlier today, Saab employees returned to work this morning. But what are they actually doing? Well, we talked to a number of them and not only are their spirits high, but they’re happy to be back on site and among familiar faces.

Some of them have attended various courses organized by the company such as production economy, quality improvement briefings and the like. Others have been optimizing the production line or making some planned changes that were scheduled for later. But the best news comes after the break.

It’s time for Plan B

April 27, 2011 in News

The newspaper from Trollhättan, TTELA, states that Saab has been working since earlier this weekend on a Plan B for the short term financing.

This new short term financing doesn’t need any real estate transactions and thus permission from the EIB wouldn’t be needed. Don’t expect to hear more rumors or news about that until the whole thing is done, which should happen during this week.

It is a plan B, so it is for sure not the best solution for Saab, but it seems like the only way to move forward is by avoiding the bureaucrats.

Production has been stopped for the last three weeks, but the rest of the company has been working all the time, to either create the products we love or to get the financing problem solved. Now it’s time for us to be patient while we wait for good news. The solution will come, but maybe not as fast as many have hoped.

Employees returned to work at SAAB

April 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

Last week it was decided that the employees at SAAB should return to work today and so they did. The production management was on location yesterday to make plans for the day and today at 7 AM they were all on location.

Tv4 was outside the factory and managed to get hold of the union IF METALL’s chairman Håkan Skött. He said that he thought it was good for people to be back at work rather than being at home, however people are still very worried about the situation not being resolved yet. They are also hoping to get some kind of information from the management and think that it would be a good time for them to give it now that everyone is gathered on location…

SAAB of the week – Saab 9-3 Sport Wagon

April 27, 2011 in Saabology

Hi, during the Easter weekend we received a nice story of a typical profile of an Audi A4 or BMW 3 series buyer in England, at least that’s what he calls himself.

It’s the story of somebody with great taste, if you study his the cars he’s owned.

Among others there was a beauty like this.

Meeting with Antonov Shows Progress

April 26, 2011 in News

In a quick update from TTela, Bo Lundgren who runs the Debt Office said that his meeting with Vladimir Antonov went well, and that a decision should be reached within days.

The meeting of the National Debt Office and Vladimir Antonov is just finished.

According to sources TTELA the meeting have been completed with positive impressions.

“We have asked questions and we have received answers,” said Bo Lundgren at the Debt Office.

Today’s meeting focused on the ownership process.

“We have discussed the background and what Antonov’s ambitions are if he becomes an owner of Saab,” said Lundgren.

“Now we have had this meeting, though we wished to meet sooner. Next, we will sit down and evaluate what we take for their own decisions and also provide a support to the Government for their decision.”

According to the National Debt Office Bo Lundgren should hopefully be able to decide within days.

TTELA / TT

Keep in mind, we’re trying to report as much good news as possible, wherever we see it. These are not easy decisions to reach, though conceptually they might seem so. There are numerous details to be worked out, and any one of them can delay the process. We’ve seen this already many times in the last few weeks. Victor, Vladimir, and their teams are working feverishly on parallel tracks to ensure that production is started as soon as possible. Once the meeting is held tomorrow (in 11 hours or so) we’ll try to wrap up and report on what has been discussed, so we can continue to keep everyone in the loop. If there’s any more news tonight, we’ll update this post. Keep it nice in comments, everyone ;)

Saab will make it through this, and this meeting between Lundgren and Antonov reconfirms this. Patience is something the Saab community is short on, no wonder why we love turbos so much.

More news tomorrow?

April 26, 2011 in News

Reuters reports (english translation) that Saab have called in all workers for an information meeting tomorrow 7am sharp.

TTela has provided a a nice summary (english translation). There is apparently a ‘plan B’ in the works. There is speculation they may be talking with a potential Chinese partner.

We are all playing the waiting game now. Hopefully this will be resolved shortly. There are many possibilities available with a little bit of ‘outside the box’ thinking. Now is a bad time to push party politics.

Thanks Caab93Aero and Audun.

Aftonbladets Robert Collin on Governmental responsibility

April 26, 2011 in Editorial, News

From Aftonbladet.se today

Who takes responsibility when the government forces Saab out of business?
April 26, 2011, at 11:41 Written by Robert Collin

Why is Sweden so hostile to its car industry?
In no other country in the world a government is actively working so hard to close down its car production. In no other country are people up like a man and chanting “Close the s*it down!”.
Only in Sweden.

Gov. Preparing for bankrupcy

April 26, 2011 in Uncategorized

Maud Olofsson claims that the government is ready and are making further preparations for education and financial support to Trollhättan if Saab would declare bankrupcy, however when TTela asked the minister for education as well as the finance department and they had no knowledge of any such preparations?…
