SaabsUnited Exclusive: Unknown cars…

April 23, 2011 in Uncategorized

Here’s an interesting thing for you guys, we have received some photos of some kind of project cars that are parked somewhere at SAAB in Trollhättan, we dont know what these cars are but they are big, bigger than the new 9-5 and they are registered as Holden cars…

Basically there are three of them, all white and they do have some items we find on the 9-5 Sedan, the rear bumper with the “aero” exhausts is one thing, rims is another…

These photos are under COPYRIGHT©SAABSUNITED.COM

A trusted source to SaabsUnited from within the government has confirmed some information that make us strongly believe that the government has had communication with Volvo & Geely about SAAB.

PhoeniX on the floor of NYIAS

April 22, 2011 in News

Hey guys, busy day here hopping from meeting to meeting at work, but I want to keep the steady stream of info pouring out of New York. I have a lot of questions that I’m waiting to hear back answers from execs from, but in the meantime, I took the most comprehensive pictures I could of the PhoeniX of details we care about (under the car especially until I was asked to stop ;) ). As always, more to come soon.

9-5 SC available in the US this winter…

April 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

It seams as if there is some delay to the launch of the 9-5 SC for the US market, originally it was set to be available for the US customers more or less at the same time as the European customers. The new SAAB USA website has this written on it:

One can only speculate why, but there is a lot of changes between the EU model and the US version of the 9-5 SC, some things we have seen here at SaabsUnited is a whole new bumber and lowerpart of the hatch. There are a lot of differences in regulations guiding car manufacturers between EU and the US. These together with the current economic situation for SAAB could be some reasons for the delay.

Volvo interested in SAAB?

April 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

From Reuters:

‘Volvo is interested in Saab ‘

LONDON (Reuters) – The Swedish carmaker Volvo expects soon a “request” of the Swedish government to take over Saab.

This is reported bij De Financiele Telegraaf (DFT), which relies on anonymous sources within Volvo. Swedish government officials would already have held discussions with the management of Volvo, which would not be unsympathetic to acquiring Saab.

For Sweden, acquiring Saab by Volvo, which since last year is in the hands of Chinese car maker Geely, gives more certainty about the repayment of the loan of 400 million euros that the European Investment Bank has provided to Saab. The Swedish government guarantees the loan.

Saab was acquired early last year by Dutch luxury sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars, but is in serious financial trouble. Production came to a standstill in recent weeks because suppliers refused to supply spare parts due to late payment.

There is some speculation about if this is true or not? Personally I dont think there is much truth in this story, probably just some wild speculation going on again…

The Man most under pressure in Sweden, Victor Muller

April 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

Alrik Söderlind from Auto Motor & Sport meets Victor Muller in NY over a quick lunch.

“This is the first time a bank must approve us for borrowing less money… But thats the way it is with SAAB. Everything we do is unique.” Victor Muller is in a good mood and the New York auto-show, he has only slept 3 hours last night but now the EIB-Loan is very close to being finished.

Saab New York Press Conference

April 21, 2011 in News

Saab gave their press conference today and as expected, no explosive details were revealed, though the EIB loan process was detailed. Victor showed a more humble side, instead of expressing over the top optimism, he toned it down to express a more pragmatic vision for Saab’s current situation. Here’s hoping that next year’s press conference gets back to the excitement and enthusiasm we’re used to, when we’ll get to see the new 9-3 in the metal.

Thursday Snippets: From the Show Edition

April 21, 2011 in Uncategorized

According to TTela (english version), Eric Geers says the plan is to get factory staff back in by Wednesday next week. No news on when production may start up again.

Also from TTela (english version), Valdemar Lönnroth has put together a fantastic article about Vladimir Antonov’s background. Some things you might have already read, and maybe even some new ones. Did you know CPP which Vladimir owns a major share of also owns Zagato? The list of automotive cousins keeps expanding for Saab.

Alrik Söderlind from Swedish car magazine Auto Motor & Sport sat down with Victor during lunch yesterday (English version). I hope to have a short opportunity as he did today. We were actually sitting together when he got called in to the office, and we both remarked to each other how absolutely glued to his phone Victor was. News is coming soon we all hope.

Alrik invited me to write a piece about SU for AMS, and I’m very excited to share the positive and exciting changes we have in store for the site with the greater Swedish auto fans.

Does stylish Swedish saloon have what it takes to fill the shoes of an old favourite?

April 21, 2011 in News, test drive

Friend and fellow Saab enthusiast, Graeme Lambert, has recently taken delivery of of his latest long term test car and it just happens to be a Saab 9-5 TTiD Aero. As you may know Graeme is a journalist for the British Car Weekly Auto Express. He will be writing about his new Saab on a regular basis and will let us have the links to his latest entries online.

Having recently sold his old 900, the 9-5 fills a huge void in his life. If you couldn’t tell already, Graeme is very excited about the 9-5 as you will see if you pop over to his page at Auto Express.

April 21, 2011 in News

Here’s some detail video from Chelsea Piers of the Saab PhoeniX traveling exhibition. It’s but one of many videos to come in the next few days from SaabsUnited.

Saab has some great shots coming of the PhoeniX rolling around the West Village that and Meatpacking District that will be online soon. Germans may not be able to watch the video because I used a Swedish band as background music, rest assured I’ll post a muted version for you guys later. Next year we’re buying an image stabilizer mount so we can get some more pro-style shots ;)

Victor Speaks to Bloomberg in New York

April 21, 2011 in News

Characteristically upbeat about Saab’s prospects, Victor Muller answered some fair and interesting questions from Matt Miller at Bloomberg. While regulars here know all the answers before Victor even needs to open his mouth, it’s reassuring to hear him show what an obvious case one can make for Saab’s success. Saab will be the alternative car brand, the one for those who don’t want to be lemmings or follow the luxury herd. Remember when buyers chose between a 911 and an SPG? It’s about time customers had to weigh that decision again. You can’t help but love Victor.

New York Auto Show Day 1

April 20, 2011 in News

It’s been a freakishly busy two days in New York, but exciting for Saab no less. For those who haven’t experienced a major auto show, rest assured it’s a media circus and the press have been coming non-stop to see and report on Saab. Of course there’s only one journalist whose opinion you actually care about, and that would be the one and only Swade. This is the first time I’ve met him and I have to say, he’s just as warm, intelligent, and plugged-in to Saab as anyone could ever be. It’s a great honor, and I hope to see much more of him when he’s here. We spoke briefly with Gunnar Heinrich, the producer of automobilesdeluxe.tv, who’s got a huge soft spot for Saab and was really impressed by the PhoeniX in person.

In fact I’ve seen hundreds of reporters come and marvel in awe at the new PhoeniX. Let me just say, seeing it in person changes things completely. It isn’t polarizing, it’s mesmerizing.

SvD: More than Antonov involved…

April 20, 2011 in News

Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) has a rather good summary of the present negotiation in this post published today by Jonas Fröberg.

Please note: I post this here as I want to bring this into the SU-community, but not as a rampage towards Swedish media or anything else.

The article states that according to sources more than Antonov is involved in the purchase of the Saab localities. At least one more party is involved in the construction of the deal . This is the reason why the time is moving so slow at the moment. Furthermore the article states that Saab at the same time is having negotiations with several Chinese companies regarding long-term survival.

The article continues explaining the present situation and what has happend in the last days. It’s a rather good and objective summary I would say that is well worth reading.

It ends with rather important notice that we all here at SU are well aware of: Everybody is waiting. Customers, suppliers and not at least Saab employees, who are going through a steel bath right now.

The Griffin has landed – in Germany

April 20, 2011 in News

We just got this pleasant news from our SU-friend “kaiger” in Germany. Saab Zentrum Osnabrück in the city of Osnabrück got a small Easter surprise this morning when they got delivery of their first 9-3 SC Griffin. This corresponds well with what TimR reported last week about cars being shipped out from the factory in Trollhättan.

Thank you kaiger for the photos! Everybody near Osnabrück should pay a visit to Saab Zentrum Osnabrück at once!!
