May 27, 2011 in News

As many of you guys already know I was at the Saab factory today, the press conference went great and I got to meet many of my friends at Saab, Magnus Hansson, Knut Simonsson, Steven Wade, Eric Geers, Gunilla Gustavs, my father, and last but definitely not least, Victor Muller.

I also managed to snap a small video without any of the reporters running in front of me! You can view this one until the press-conference has been uploaded!, Enjoy! =)

Production line started at 10:00

May 27, 2011 in News

A test run of 5 cars were run at 08:00 and at 10:00 the production line started. The production-rate is running at 80% today, Monday will also run at 80%, Tuesday will start at 90% for half of the day then 100% from that point on.

Checks were made if anything might have gone wrong with the first 5 cars but every station reported in a perfect result.

Due to the high number of ordered cars, the employees will work with a time-schedule called Maximum Time, which means that they are working longer days and sometimes also Saturdays in order to catch up. A special deal with the unions will most likely be made so that the work-force will get a reduced summer holiday and get compensated for that!

On a side-note: SaabsUnited was the first media in the world to report about this! We had the news online 2 min after the production line was started!

Some pictures from Saab from the start at 10:00

New kid on the blog…

May 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

Well, actually not that new. You know me as till72, the guy with the decal covered 9-3x. Besides lots of comments I had a few pieces I wrote published here on the front page over the last two years. SU has made me even more Saab fanatic than I was before so I was quite happy that Tim asked me to become a part of the SU team.

A main part of my work here will be about the Hirsch Performance stuff and maybe a bit of editorial – we’ll see.

A bit more about me: born in ’72, I grew up in the northern part of Germany until we moved to Munich in 1986. I am married to Kerstin and we have two girls (2 and 4 years). As a day time job I run my own pre-press business.

My own Saab history started in 2000 with a 1989 9000 CD and I haven’t had another brand since then with the only exception being an Impreza for my wife a few years ago. Right now our car park features my 9-3x and my wife’s 9-5 SC, which will be replaced with a 9-4x asap.

Välkommen till Sverige, Pang Da *UPDATED

May 26, 2011 in News

An article from ttela.se brings us details of Pang Da’s visit today and tomorrow. There are two groups from Pang Da, a team visiting Trolhattan today and another comprised of senior leadership meeting with government officials (including Maud Olosson and the NDO) in Stockholm. Normally I don’t like just posting news article translations but I’ll be the first to admit this sums up the activities of the last 48 hours well and explains what next 24-48 hours hold.

A special congratulations to Saab staff for putting in so much hard work to get production rolling again, we’re all amazed by your work ethic.

Setting the Story Straight

May 26, 2011 in Editorial

Anyone who reads about Saab on a regular basis has encountered an article that makes them cringe. Sometimes it’s because of a biased opinion, sometimes it’s from a lack of information, but the most cringeworthy articles are the ones that outright misrepresent facts. My new mission for all SU commenters: call out these BS artists and school them.

Maud Olofsson and Saab

May 26, 2011 in News, Uncategorized

As we know Maud Olofsson had a meeting with Mr Vladimir Antonov the other night and this was a pure information meeting from Antonov’s part. The reactions from the meeting indicates that it went well, however, Maud Olofsson has stated to various media that the Swedish Government will wait for an approval of Mr Antonov by the EIB and GM first and if both of them are favorable, then the Swedish Government will also approve Mr Antonov as an owner in Saab.

In other news Maud Olofsson had accepted a meeting with Pang Da and Mr Victor Muller, but there seems to some changes in the schedules and with such a short notice it might be difficult for her to attend the meetings in Trollhättan, I guess we’ll see what happens!

Ms Olofsson has met with Mr Antonov

May 25, 2011 in News

While yesterday it was announced that Ms Olofsson was willing to meet with Mr Antonov. Today SvD Ms Olofsson announced that she and Mr Antonov met yesterday evening.

The Russian financier Vladimir Antonov met Maud Olofsson and set out why he wants to put money into Saab. The meeting took place on Tuesday evening at the department, five days after the government received his letter.

“It was a good meeting. Always good to see people that are so circumscribed,” said Olofsson.

But the rush is not on the government’s decision.

“We are waiting for GM and the EIB,” said Olofsson.

Hirsch Performance: Saab 9-5 Photo-shoot – Updated

May 25, 2011 in Hirsch, Saabology

Here is a continuing story from Till and Hirsch, this time it’s all about photos! =)

Update below – added some Info from Hirsch

Last week I gave some insight on the aim Hirsch Performance had in mind when developing the products for the 9-5. Now let’s take a look at the results…

Equipped with the latest prototypes the Hirsch engineers finally went to the wind tunnel to see what the aerodynamic tweaks would mean in numbers. The car they used had the Hirsch lowering kit fitted because it is designed to support aerodynamics, too. I have to admit that I was pretty impressed by what they managed to do with those rather subtle parts. The optimized airflow led to a cd value that dropped by almost five percent to 0,27 compared to the standard 9-5. The lift on the front axle declined by 70%, on the rear axle by 40%. This is extremely healthy if you like to travel fast because you have much better high speed stability.

While the manufacturers started production the test vehicle, equipped with all parts of the 9-5 Hirsch Performance, went to a photo studio to get some nice pics for the upcoming release. Though I know that good photos don’t come easy it’s still fascinating for me how much effort and time it takes to end up with three pics. Sometimes you even wonder why you show up with a complete car as they photograph some parts separately in the perfect light and then put them back together. Here’s a short making-of-photoshoot video that gives a nice glimpse of the car.

The 9-5 aerodynamics package was, like all Hirsch products, developed in close cooperation with Saab. The test day in the wind tunnel for example was attended by Håkan Danielsson from the Saab aerodynamics team to check the results and add his expertise. Sure it sometimes takes a bit longer to work this way but in my opinion the product is worth the wait.

On a personal note I have to admit that I just love that car. It’s still a 9-5 but looks sportier without loosing the understated looks. I have driven the car with the engine upgrade and the tweaked suspension and I’ve enjoyed the exhaust note on a test drive back in March. I’d have a hard time choosing which parts I’d take if I were to buy a 9-5. Most likely I’d take all of them.

As Rune had some specific questions I dug out a bit additional info (thanks to Erik Lundgren from Hirsch):

On the rear spoiler used individually:
“All bits improve stability and lower drag even when used individually. However, when it comes to lift, it is more a question of balance and which configuration you compare with. Adding a rear spoiler reduces lift in the rear but increases it slightly in the front, and the front spoiler reduces lift in the front but increases it slightly in the rear. What we have done is we have made the parts so that they can be used separately without causing critical lift on the other end of the car. To get optimal stability and lift reduction, the complete kit should be installed, together with the sports suspension.”

Front ground clearance/approach angle:
If you look closely, the front spoiler bottom surface extends only one cm downwards, but extends maybe 5 cm forward, which means that the approach angle is hardly affected, yet the front stagnation point for the airflow is significantly lowered.”

And an additional comment on the cd value:
“Since the wind tunnel used doesn’t have a moving ground, the Cd values we measured both in standard configuration and with the aerodynamics bits and pieces were all about 5% higher than in a modern wind tunnel. Normally, the car would have 0,27 already standard, and we would improve 5% on that.”
