Saab causes concern in the chamber of commerce

May 23, 2011 in Uncategorized

According to GP.se (original article here)

“The western part of Sweden is still growing strong according to the chamber of commerce’s indicators. In april the economic recovery was well and the unemployment decreased. But there is a reservation for what is happening with Saab.
- Lets hope that these notices of discharge that was given by a lot of suppliers to Saab, does not turn into real unemployment say Stefan Gustavsson who is managers for the West-Swedish Chamber of Commerce in a comment to the Gothenburg Post.

Stefan Gustavsson is hoping that the production at Saab will be running again soon!
- But if this should not happen, large parts of the west-coast businesses have a need for labor-force and will hopefully be able to provide a part of the people who get laid off a job.

The sense among the people in the chamber is still positive but we can see a decline in the last few months. There is no need for drama, the level is setting into more normal levels according to Stefan Gustavsson.”

Press Release: Pang Da starts discussions with NDRC

May 23, 2011 in News

Pang Da Enters Procedure Discussions With Chinese Authorities To Obtain Necessary Regulatory Approvals For Investment In Spyker And Saab Automobile

Trollhättan, Sweden – Spyker Cars N.V. (Spyker) and Saab Automobile AB (Saab Automobile) confirm that Pang Da Automobile (Pang Da) has entered procedure discussions with Chinese authorities, including the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), to obtain regulatory approvals for the investment in Spyker and Saab Automobile. Spyker Cars is to be renamed Swedish Automobile N.V. shortly. The general meeting of shareholders has decided so.

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker and Saab Automobile, said: “Based on our discussions with Pang Da we are confident that Pang Da will get the regulatory approvals needed to formalize the deal. I am very much looking forward to creating a strong business with Pang Da, initially in the distribution and subsequently in the manufacturing of Saab vehicles in China. What needs to be pointed out is that Pang Da’s advance payment and sales of imported Saab cars are not subject to approval from the NDRC. The first advance payment of EUR 30 million was received last Tuesday.”

Mr. PANG Qinghua, CEO of Pang Da, said: “The initial procedure discussions we have had with the NDRC were done in good spirit and all parties have a good understanding of the process going forward. We remain convinced that we will be able to get all the necessary documentation and approvals to successfully complete the transactions and look forward to our visit at Saab Automobile’s headquarters in Trollhättan, Sweden, later this week.”

China: While Uncertainty Remains Over Future Deal, Saab Must Focus On the Present

May 23, 2011 in Editorial, News

  • Future hurdles to setting up the Manufacturing Joint Venture (MJV) between Saab, Pang Da, and a Chinese domestic manufacturing partner include getting past the NDRC. However, Pang Da has suggested that they will be asking the NDRC themselves who they would recommend as a partner– casting doubts over the reports that suggest the NDRC would get in the way.
  • No matter what happens with the future MJV, Saab’s focus continues to be securing short and medium term financing to ensure a smooth production in Trollhättan and continued development of the NG 9-3. The distribution agreement with Pang Da for Chinese importation of Saabs is a needed cash infusion, and sets the stage for future cooperation. In the meantime, Victor Muller recently suggested that his focus will return to Trollhättan and the EIB loan. “After the Pangda deal is implemented, my focus is going to be finding a new CEO and getting a commercial loan to take out the EIB,” Muller said. “We cannot be dependent on the government or the EIB for whatever we do with the company. We have been paralyzed, we cannot move left or right.”

No doubt the Chinese auto market is complex and difficult to navigate, certainly for a small automaker from Sweden. The deal between Swedish Automobile (formerly Spyker) and Pang Da has multiple arms, the first are solely based on distribution and sales. Pang Da as one of the largest dealership groups in China as we know already sells a number of brands. Several news reports filed over the weekend with more expected to come this week suggest that Saab’s future partnership to produce cars for the local Chinese market will meet resistance with China’s regulatory agencies. Two articles emerged in particular, one from Bloomberg and the other from Automotive News that cast doubt over the future of the MJV Saab and Pang Da intend to form. But should we even be worried about deals that were crafted to take place a year or two from now when there are much more pressing matters happening in Sweden now?

ConsumerReports latest about Saab

May 23, 2011 in Uncategorized

This is not something I want to read but unfortunately something I expected would come sooner or later… This is a report from ConsumerReports.org and addresses the issue about buying Saabs. One thing about buying a car in Sweden is that the brand is forced to supply a customer with spare-parts for 10 years after the car has been bought from the dealership. I don’t know the rules for the US market and have not been able to look it up. Perhaps some of our readers can shed some light on that issue?

Original Article here

Most of the auto industry has emerged from the so-called auto crisis that brought Chrysler Corp. and General Motors to their knees, but Saab continues to struggle. New owners Spyker Cars signed a deal with a Chinese partner and benefactor Chinese Hawtai Motor Group, who would invest in the company and open Asian production and distribution opportunities. That deal has since been nixed, and Spyker isnow reportedly in talks with Great Wall Motor. So, where does that leave car buyers?

Honestly, Saab buyers are in a tough place. The brand shows hope in its products, with the all-new 9-5 on the market setting a new tone, followed by the 9-4X SUV and 9-5 SportCombi. At the New York auto show, the company displayed its futuristic Phoenix concept car, signaling the potential for a company poised to rise from the ashes of being expunged from General Motors during its bankruptcy-driven brand purge.

The reality is, the company’s fate remains uncertain, creating risks for current and prospective car owners. Production is currently halted, as Saab seeks short-term funding and debt relief. As we have seen before, such turmoil can impact resale values and down-turned business can hurt dealerships and potentially lead to closings and diminished support—all things that do not enhance the ownership experience.

Should Saab go under, could Spyker provide parts and service to support current owners for years to come? Hard to predict, but when infinitely larger GM was looking to do the same, we cautioned buyers about an uncertain future. The message should be stronger and clearer now.

Exercise caution when considering a Saab until the business is back on its wheels. For now, there are simply better alternatives that do not carry undue risks.

SAAB of the week – 9-5 Turbo6

May 22, 2011 in Sotw

Radu's two Saabs

Over a month ago, when Saab’s production had been halted for about a week, Radu from Romania sent the crew an e-mail with a hint of buyer’s remorse. He had just purchased a 9-5 Turbo6, his third Saab in 8 years. Had he made a mistake trusting Saab?

I answered him the same thing I tell myself “this car is one I will keep for at least ten years”. I mentioned that the warranty would be covered by the dealer (at least that is the situation here in Sweden) and that parts are not thought to be much of a problem (Saab’s sister company makes a nice healthy profit from selling parts and will continue to do so post-Saab).

My lengthy reply to Radu ended with: My recommendation for you is to jump into your new car, drive it for an hour and see if you can avoid smiling. :)

The e-mails that followed were filled with a great sense of relief and enjoyment. Radu told me that his fiancé will get his 9-3 once his 9-5 is officially on the road (it takes time to get the bureaucracy sorted).

I have even showed it (the e-mail) to my father which is an engineer specializing in aerodynamics (he has a PhD in this field). When I parked my new 9-5 in front of his house he only said: wait a minute … Let me enjoy the view! The curves! The elements that make the vehicle friendly with the air that flows along, the profile that calls for great engineering in terms of shape”! He was amazed! He begun explaining what every item does in terms of airflow ease. Then he walked inside and it was the moment I showed him the e-mail from you. He read it carefully and said: “Normal! I would think the same!”

In the mean time I have had many hours behind the wheel smiling. I am not wiling to extend that many are looking at the new car. But is me feeling greatly inside and very secure that does indeed a lot of work. My idea is not to aim to make trade with the car in the next few years but to keep it to enjoy and perhaps to have my sons taking in onwards. I am also keeping my new 9-3 for my fiance! So thank you for reassuring me on the topic.

Radu is a 36 years old insurance losses independent surveyor (loss adjuster) from Romania with an impeccable taste in fine automobiles. The 9-5 is his third Saab.

Göteborgsvarvet 2011

May 22, 2011 in Editorial

Well, as TimR posted I did participate in “Göteborgsvarvet 2011″ – for you who don’t know it’s some sort of crazy thing where people of free will run/walk/crawl 21,1 km (half marathon-race) around Göteborg. JAJ did participate and I can admit that I did beat him with a few minutes.

Volcanic emissions and handling the twisties

Route chosen

It is Friday 5pm. I’ve attended a work seminar at a hotel outside town and I need to drive 330 km to get home.

There were two alternatives for me to get to the border. Either go back through the city and stay on the highway, or take the shortest route through the country side (60 km vs 80 km).

Had it not been for the traffic, this particular road would have been a blast to drive. It was twisty and the speed limit was sometimes set up to make the ride near interesting. However, at 5pm the locals were not where they were supposed to be – at home. No, they were all lined up in front of my car, adding further delay to my progress.

The time added to my trip allowed my thoughts to wander a bit more than usual. At one point, I noticed that the main part of the queue was actually pulling away from us. An older Mercedes was unable or unwilling to keep pace, and the road was too twisty to allow slower vehicles to safely overtake him. It was time for me to demonstrate the power of the mighty 9000. My 9000 is probably as old as that Mercedes, but the 9000 was built as a modern car and is more than just a mere heap of metal on wheels.

Victor Muller assures, no problem in china! =)

TTELA (original article here) Chinese officials had a meeting with the Chinese automobile companies interested in Saab late wednesday night.

According to reports in other media the Pang Da affair could be under threat, but as reported to TTELA the meeting aimed to clarify the situation so there is not a continuing battle over the Saab.

“Yes, there have been a misinterpretation on this” said Victor Muller to TTELA. Read the rest of this entry →
