Antonov wants a meeting with Olofsson

May 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

TTELA (original article here) “It is imperative that I get the opportunity to discuss my motives, plans and the resources I have a meeting face-to-eye with you”
So writes Vladimir Antonov, in a letter addressed to Maud Olofsson (C) that the Industry Ministry received on Thursday evening.
It is 23 days since the National Debt Office approved Vladimir Antonov as the owner of Saab’s parent company. The government has stated that it awaits the EIB’s consideration of the question. Read the rest of this entry →

Your Voice Matters

May 21, 2011 in Editorial, News, Saabology

SaabsUnited plays many different roles. For some of us, myself included, it’s an addictive outlet for the latest news about our beloved car company. For industry insiders it’s a way to check up on the state of affairs in Trollhättan. Members of Saab staff come here regularly to see what the public is saying and check the pulse of the community. And given the most recent election results in Sweden, even government officials come here to read about how their constituents view their actions regarding Swedish industry.

Most drivers develop an affection for their cars, but there’s something about a Saab that gets under your skin and endears itself to you from the moment you put the key in its center console. The brand inspires groups of people to drive hundreds or even thousands of miles to be with other like-minded Saab fans, in Sweden, the US and around the world. In times of crisis, we’ve come together and rallied behind a common cause to SAVE SAAB. Now it’s time to do it again.

Many have placed the blame at the feet of the EIB, no doubt since they seem to hold the cards when it comes to Saab’s largest current loan. What hope do a group of individual Saab fans have of convincing bankers to make a decision? Very little, as they’re purposely formed to be independent from the ebb and flow of politics, and to ensure a steady hand on the markets. The real power we have as an entity is to put political pressure on the Swedish government to take an official stance on approving Vladimir Antonov as a shareholder in Saab. This isn’t a drill, this isn’t just to save a novelty car company as many journalists seem to think of Saab, this is about real people, a real city, with a solid and fundamentally sound plan that just need to hear one phrase from their government: “Vi godkänner.”

From Mr Antonov to all of us

May 21, 2011 in Editorial, News

Directly from Mr Vladimir Antonov himself to all of us supporting Saab

The web-page www.Saabsunited.com on Friday May 20, 2011, started a wide campaign, supporting Vladimir Antonov as an investor and shareholder of Automobile manufacturer Saab. People who care about  Saab’s future on a speedy resolution of the situation with actions on the part of the Swedish government, which will allow the well-known entrepreneur to enter into a deal and become one of the shareholders, which in turn will enable the Swedish automaker to quickly get out of the crisis and resume the production of the famous iconic brand Saab. Vladimir Antonov, urge fans of Saab to act with awareness of pressure and sharp comments against the Swedish Government, as such activity does not contribute to the speedy and effective resolution of the situation. We are thankful for the support, which is certainly needed, and are as many people around the world waiting for a positive resolution of all issues related to the details of the permission of ownership. However, we want to encourage you to behave correctly with respect to the Swedish Government in general and the people representing it.

Vladimir Antonov

So people, Vladimir wants our support and appreciate everyone’ s efforts, but ask from us to please refrain from harsh comments about the Swedish Government and individuals herein.

Remember, SaabsUnited is All of us and not just the SU crew.

Here are some samples of the first 400 e-mails that we have received from around the world, I read them all!:

Dear Mr.Fredrik Reinfeldt,

I urge you to approve Mr Vladimir Antonov to become shareholder of SAAB. Many jobs here in the USA
depend on your decision. SAAB dealers and employees livelihood are in danger as well as you are certainly aware thousands in Sweden and the rest of the world.

Dear Mr. Fredrik Reinfeldt

I would ask you (Swedish Government) to allow Vladimir Antonov to become shareholder in Saab.

Do not let Saab die!

Mr. Fredrik Reinfeldt,

Please follow the guidelines of the NDO and also approve Mr Vladimir Antonov as shareholder in Saab.

Dear Mr Reinfeldt.

Dear Mr. Reinfeldt:
My name is Juan José García, and I live in Asturias, in Northern Spain. As a proud owner of a new and fantastic Swedish Saab 9-5 I support the Saabsunited campaign that demands your government to approve Mr Vladimir Antonov as a shareholder in Saab. I think that it’s important for the brand… and for Sweden too.
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Best regards from Spain

As a SAAB owner and car enthusiast, I want the situation around Saab to stabilize. No longer should an investor who is ready to step in be held out due to unknown reasons. The Swedish government must act to allow Vladimir Antonov in as investor in SAAB.
Something simple is required: action.

In Germany the government is ready to invest billions in R&D of electric cars. It may seem that in Sweden investments are not allowed, not even by private parties. This must change. Now.

Yours sincerely,
Ken Haetta

Please approve MR. Vladimir Antonov and have pride in your automaker. As a Saab owner I demand it.

Please let in Antonov as a shareholder for Saab!

Kirk from Montreal, Canada.

Dear SAAB-United Members, and Fredereik Reinfeltd,

I highly appreciate all you effort to SAVE SAAB. Of course I agree most adequate way to save the brand it’s : buying its cars.
But on the other hand its hard for the marketing staff to convince the customers to by a product with permanent financial uncertainties around.

Although I am not Swedish I really feel for SAAB, I really hope we can convince Mr. Fredereik Reinfeltd to accept Mr. Vladimir Antonov’s contributions. Since I am EU citizen I do worry for ten thousands of employees as well, (and Mr Reinfeldt should do more).

To be honest it doesn’t really clear for me, why do the Swedish Government prefer the Abusive State-Capitalist Chinese financial colonization of Europe, comparing to Russian investments. Of course I am aware of Mr. Antonov’s background, but you need to note, that he already has those financial assents, (so you won’t support further criminals – since his quite his business for car manufacturing.

It is unacceptable to let your people suffering and wasting you heritage, cause of kind of principals. Actually a political should really find the balance between ethics and pragmatism.

Antonov’s interest are so clear, so why to wait for others.

Thanks for you attention and understanding.

All the best Regards :

To whom it may concern

As a Saab customer I do support the open letter to the Swedish Government to process the request of Mr. Antonov to become an important investor in Spyker/Saab to secure the future of the Saab car company. I have witness that some other important automotive nations within the EU are supporting their industry, why not the Swedish Government as there are so many jobs directly and indirectly and a tremendous know how at stake?

Stephane Roudaut. Paris. FRANCE

Dear Members of the Swedish government,

Please proceed promptly to the final approval of Mr. Antonov as a SAAB shareholder, as recommended by your NDO.

This not just a local matter. As a small country, Sweden benefits from recognition in foreign countries from everything ranging from great hockey players to its special collection of instantly recognized and distinctive brands. Sweden benefits in cash and good will when we pass or especially visit an Ikea, Saab, Electrolux, or other commercial representative of your country. Those of us who are regular customers of those brands are rejected when Sweden does not support its international presence in the marketplace.

Thank you for your attention,

BMS

Let it be known that I, Paul Biesta, fully support mr. Vladimir Antonov becoming a major shareholder in Saab-Spyker.
Please realize that all Saab needs now is to be allowed to survive this difficult period. Once they have overcomethese difficulties, Sweden will again have a great car industry to be proud of!

I demand Swedish Government to APPROVE Vladimir Antonov as SAAB shareholder. If shortsighted Swedish Government can’t help SAAB, then at least let somebody else to help. Don’t you understand, then if SAAB is dead – Sweden is too. Don’t just look at 3500 SAAB empleyess, look at Sweden’s dealers, suppliers and other SAAB-dependent bussineses. It could be more than 8000 people who directly or indirectly may loose their jobs! I, as an foreigner (lithuanian), see SAAB as one of tree Sweden icons (two others – Volvo and ABBA). If you let SAAB die – you loose your identity, so please help SAAB!

SAAB fan,
Karolis Morkūnas,
Lithuania.

Mr. Fredrik Reinfeldt
Swedish Prime Minister

Dear Sir:

Please accept this eMail as my request to have the Swedish Government approve Mr. Vladimir Antonov
as a potention shareholder in Saab.

My family lives in Tarpon Springs, Florida, USA and have owned Saab vehicles since 1987 (9000 Turbo).
We have owned a total of 10 Saab’s since 1987. We find them to be some of the more desirable automobiles to own and drive.
Their safety and economical designs (4-cyl) have been a strong selling point for our family.

At the present time, we own 3 Saab’s (1999 Viggen, 2008 9-5 SC and 2009 9-3 SC). Saab needs
all the help that they can get. Most of the negative press and comments have no justification and we implore the
Swedish government to just allow Mr. Antonov to become a shareholder and keep Saab as a viable
manufacturing entity in your country.

Gerald P. Goulish, P. E.
Tarpon Springs, Florida USA

It is about time preserving everybody’s interests. Saab lovers, workers, dealers , suppliers…in Sweden first , and in the world where Saab’s image is associated to Sweden.

I am writing to you in regards to the approval of Vladimir Antonov as an investor in Saab.

Its been weeks now since Vladimir applied to invest it Saab, your Car industry, and still nothing. Saab needs your support and so do the hard working people in Trollhaten. Saab want and need your decision now, in days, not weeks and not months. Saab is one of your countries greatest assets and I encourage you to do everything in your power to assist Saab to help it secure its future and reach its full potential.

As a supporter of centre right politics and Sweden it paints me to see the way you treat your own car industry. While other countries are pumping billions into their car industries you are taking unnecessarily long to make a no brainer decision. My message is simple, APPROVE VLADIMIR!

SvD casts a light on the chinese situation

May 21, 2011 in Uncategorized

Yesterday we reported about some “rumors” that the Saab deal could be in jeopardy, we did not know basically anything about the background of the information but there were several chinese and european media that focused on the story which made it credible for us as well. Today SvD’s Jonas Fröberg, which is probably the reporter in the world who I respect the most, have analyzed the situation and it seems as if yesterdays rumors were not unfounded!

In the article below some real facts are stated (original article here):

Barely had the Saab contract with Pang Da been signed until the problems start again. At a secret meeting this week signaled China’s leaden National Development and ReformCommission, NDRC, the vehicle group, that Youngman has first dibs at Saab. There is a huge setback for Muller who wish to involve Pang Da as a partner. According to SvD Näringsliv sources called NDRC, which must approve all major business in China, at a special meeting about Saab in Beijing May 18, The subject was the saga of the Saab Spyker in China. And the message was clear: the vehicle group Youngman that Saab / Spyker previously negotiated with still have the primary right to go in as the owners of Saab. Silencing the Naysayers

May 21, 2011 in Editorial

The other day, A University of Stockholm professor, wrote an editorial stating his belief that Saab must first die before the can succeed again. He argues that Victor Muller and the current executive team aren’t able to develop or stick to a credible long term plan for the company. At the same time, he ignores the fundamental point that Saab has consistently been aiming to lower their breakeven point, has leveraged their best assets in trying to compete as a small niche player in a larger market, and indeed said many times that 2010-2012 were transition years.

Professor Fang (he sounds like an evil cartoon character) thinks that the Volvo/Geely deal serves as a shining example of how Chinese companies can come to the rescue of beloved Swedish companies. I think time will show that Geely’s interests were primarily in boosting their own image, technology, and domestic positioning in the Chinese market than any interest in Scandinavian heritage or industry. By contrast, Saab is working hard to cement Trollhättan as the global and spiritual center for Saab’s brand, renaming the parent company to Swedish Automobile, focusing on Saab not Spyker, setting up new partnerships with ZF and AAM in Trollhättan, and moving production to a common Phoenix architecture that allows for long term stability in their Swedish operations.

By contrast, Geely is working on expanding Volvo through its Chinese factories much more than through Swedish facilities, which one could argue is only the first step in the dilution of the brand. Saab’s plan to sell its own cars through their new Chinese distributor and plans for a local Chinese joint venture isn’t at the core of their business plan as it is for Geely/Volvo, it’s a newly added bonus. Where Geely was more interested in buying technology, Pang Da is more interested in selling and promoting Saab. Fortunately, I don’t have to argue too much against Professor Fang, as Anna Petre, director of community relations for Saab Automobile has written her own editorial that was published today in DI rebutting everything he said.

Find out what she has to say in a translation after the break. A highly recommended read.

Pang Da-Saab partnership faces uncertainty *UPDATE

May 20, 2011 in News

UPDATE: We’re getting many emails from Saab insiders that there’s not much as much uncertainty as Shanghai Daily would have us believe. As most of this and other articles posted in the last 24 hours cite “Industry experts” and not actual first person sources that are part of the deal, much of this article is based on speculation.

Pang Da has background in Joint-Manufacturing deals, as noted with Beijing Automotive, to produce Subarus. For the expert Jia to claim that Pang Da isn’t experienced in this sort of deal or can’t get it done is strange, seeing that they have navigated the Chinese regulatory environment of the NRDC before. Part of Subaru’s plans to expand into China included forming a Joint Venture between themselves (Fuji Heavy, a Japanese company) with a 50 percent stake in the JV, while Beijing Auto and Pang Da (sometimes translated as Power Diversity) hold 25 percent each. While this deal hasn’t yet been finalized, Pang Da’s CEO has outright said the Saab deal is more important to them, because they will be Saab’s exclusive dealer (whereas they wouldn’t be with Subaru, even with an MJV). In essence, Saab just became a preferred partner to Pangda than Subaru. From an interview with the CEO of Pang Da, Pang Qing Hua in ChinaCarTimes:

Sohu: So we could say that this round of investment copies the Subaru method?
PQH: (background: Subaru and Pangda were in talks to produce Subaru’s in China, but with the added twist of Pangda offering to buy into them)
The Saab method is likely to be more stable than the Subaru method. Subaru-Pangda is just a simple car dealer, but one day Subaru’s will be made in China. The problem with working with Saab and Spyker is that is that we hope we can be the main sales company, we want to protect our sales rights.

So let’s all wait before “expert” speculation starts to stick when it shouldn’t. We don’t need to fan flames.

________________________________

shanghaidaily.com (original article here) The surprising tie-up between China’s auto distributor Pang Da Automobile Trade and cash-strapped Saab may still face uncertainty due to the difficulties in gaining government approval, according to industrial analysts.

Netherlands-based Spyker Cars, the parent of the Saab unit, said on Monday that Pang Da will inject 65 million euros (US$92 million) for a 24 percent stake of Spyker and the two companies will form a 50-50 joint venture in China for distributing Saab cars. Read the rest of this entry →
