9-4X Reaching Dealers

I just got off the phone with Michele Tinson of SCNA and a few Saab dealers, and I can confirm that those 9-4Xs I reported seeing at the port in Newark are finally reaching dealers. One of the first to receive them happens to be only a few miles away from the port, JMK Saab in Springfield, NJ. Sometime in the next few days I’ll take a drive out there to see them and get some pictures and footage. They have one of each trim level– Base, Premium, and Aero.

Once the first pre-ordered 9-4X hits a dealer that’s already sold one, we’ll have coverage of it as the first Saab of its kind ever sold. It’s going to be a fun event, and SCNA will be getting in on the action too. This should happen in the next week or so. If you’re a dealer reading this and have any news, please email us at [email protected] While I’ve spoken to a few of you, we’d love to hear what your experience with the 9-4X pre-sale has been like and how customers are reacting to it. While you’re at it, send in some photos of their deliveries if you can.

In other news, the 9-4X configurator is also finally live (but the interior photo section may still be glitchy- it just went up). Despite us being able to price it on truecar.com for months, now you have the option to select your trim, colors, wheels, and packages right from saabusa.com.

UPDATE:

I have a quick question for all readers and commenters– as Clay noted in comments, he’s anxiously awaiting delivery of his new 9-4X. Are there any East Coasters out there who pre-ordered one and are waiting for it to come in? Tri-staters are likely to get them first, so if you’re located in the NYC metro area especially (or even if you’re not), let us know in comments or send us an email ([email protected]) where you’re located, what model you bought, and what dealer you ordered from, so we can see which one of you is likely to be the first 9-4X customer delivery!

Somewhere I have read that the 9-4X was sold out for 2011. Is this correct and what are the number of cars produced during 2011?

JasonPowell

Patrik B, by sold out, it’s my understanding that they’ve been built out…. maybe a translation problem there. I know some dealers have pre-sold units, but I believe there are lots available to purchase if you go into your dealer, just none for Canada until the 2012 models are built,

Patrik B

And when you say “built out”. Does this mean that every built car have a destination at a dealer or will some cars end up at a lot near at Saab Norht America?

If every car will end up at a dealer this mean that Saab wΓll actually get maximum income from these cars once they start to reach the dealers. That is why I was wondering about the number of cars. For instance could the income from 15 000 (somebody fill in the right number here) Saab 9-4X provide some cash for Saab.

They will I believe all end up at a dealer lot as the US dealers have ordered up the available 2011’s and that should mean income for Saab. I do not believe the dealers have been invoiced as of yet, AJ can correct me if I’m wrong, but once the dealers are invoiced Saab and GM get paid. So in short, I think you’re right

So can’t you make a deal with a friendly dealer in the USA, import some 9-4’s into Canada and make a number of your customers happy? I understand Saabs are significantly more expensive there than in the USA so there ought to be some profit in this for you. Sorry if I’m talking nonsense, I’m just a dumb European.

Hi Jason,

Would you (or anyone) happen to know if there are any differences between the ’11 and ’12 9-4X specs and features ?

(a bit of deja vu with 9-5 last year around this time …… limited numbers of ’10 produced and distributed, the rest were ’11’s)

ivo 71, We’re not allowed to buy new cars from the US with the sole purpose of exporting to Canada and I think that could potentially hurt us because we don’t even know the Canadian prices yet. Also, I don’t expect dealers to get a large amount of the 2011’s for stock. I think that AJ at Just Saab has about 16 or so coming and he’s a big store, so I don’t think a Saab dealer would fire sale one to me. SaabKen, I don’t know of any differences between the 11 and 12 9-4’s and I don’t think… Read more »

That’s right, Jason. Once the dealer gets ‘invoiced’ Saab gets paid (invoice typically comes within a couple of days of dealer receiving vehicle). Customer pre-orders are always nice, but Saab gets paid regardless of that vehicle going straight to the buyer or sitting on the lot for months. So for Saab to say the 9-4x has ‘sold out’, it means that every one will be headed to a dealer for resale and if a dealer is getting it, you can bet they feel confident they will sell it. Patrik, My understanding is that there will be under 1,000 2011’s. The… Read more »

I believe the only difference between 2011 and 2012 models is the adaptive whatever-they-call-it settings. The 2011 only has sport and comfort settings, while the 2012 will have sport, comfort, and intelligent settings…not a deal-breaker for me on the 2011.

@AJ Murphy. It seems that dealers have confidence in this car and that is great! πŸ™‚ I was wondering about the numbers you presented; will it be” less than 1000″ cars produced during 2011 or will there be “less than 1000” cars of model year 2011 and we will start seeing model year 2012 cars after the summer? As I guess that Saab makes limited money on the 9-4X (less than $3000 per car?) I can’t see that such a low volume would help Saab at this stage. 1000 produced cars can only pay the saleries for 10-15 days…. And… Read more »

Yes, of course 1000 cars will not save Saab. But still they will provide a valuable and needed cash-flow to Saab.

What we don’t know.. and perhaps will never know.. is the deal between Saab and GM regarding how many 9-4x GM will build for Saab per year. I bet there is a maximum number in some way. But yes, I think we all would be much more happy if it were 10.000 cars instead of 1.000, but we can’t get everything we dream of at once right? πŸ™‚

Carl-Henrik,
Wasn’t there a mention some months ago about “a comittment” of up to 12,000? And that 10,000 would end up in NA.

Re: Tripod – I have no idea. I have had very much to do at my ordinary work the last month and I haven’t been able to follow everything covered here about the 9-4X. I think we all can conclude that there will be a number set on a paper somewhere regarding amount of produced 9-4X, but I have no about what that number says. I wish the number would be non-existing making it possible for Saab to just order more and more of these beautiful cars, but of course that would perhaps harm the production of SRX for GM,… Read more »

On a related topic, Saab of Santa Ana in California has just closed. It was a large standalone dealer and the last Saab dealer in Orange County. Apparently they couldn’t ride out the production stoppages and economy. Too bad, as the 9-4x would have likely been popular in that area.

That is a bummer. My heart goes out to the owners. Selling a distressed (but awesome!) brand one of the more financially distressed regions of the US.

Did you mean the last dealer…

the last standalone dealer…

I hope you mean the last standalone dealer!

Nope, the last one in the county. About 12 years ago, 4 Saab dealers close to each other consolidated into Saab of Santa Ana. Then about 10 years ago they opened a sister dealer further south in Mission Viejo. The Mission Viejo location closed in 2008.

The area wasn’t big for Saab, but the dealer served a lot of Southern California. SCNA needs to find a multi-franchise shop that can pick up sales and service because this is a pretty big void geographically.

Tynan’s Saab in Northern Colorado closed on July 1st. This leaves three in all of Colorado, traditionally a strong Saab market. Red Noland Saab/Cadillac in Southern Colorado has sold two Saabs in the past 11 weeks. I’m not so certain that they will keep Saab as part of its line-up after this year. The dealers are really hurting – especially the stand-alone dealers. Many have plenty of inventory but not nearly enough sales to stay alive.

That is a shame. Sean Tynan had “Saab in his blood”. Losing people like this is a shame, but they have their own families to look out for.

The colour palette is somewhat dull but given a choice id take the Moorland Bronze. I am assuming more colour options will be avail later in the year?

Four colors were cancelled due to the Japan tsunami: Atlantic Blue, Crystal Red, Ice Pearl, and Cobalt Gray.
They should hopefully return for the MY12 production.

I agree that the Moorland Bronze is the best of the ones available right now. πŸ™‚
But when I looked through the colors in the “spin 360Β° and change colors and rims”-thing I still liked the Moorland Bronze the most.

I have a question about the base vs. the premium…

You can get a back-up camera for the base. I thought the base came with the multi-function (monochrome green) display. Does this mean that screen is changed out to an LCD?

Red J

Hi,
as far as I can remember on the base the camera picture is displayed on the rear view mirror.

gryphon95

@Red J – you are right. On the base, the back-up camera shows up on the rear-view mirror (like on the Cadillac SRX). It would be nice to see this feature make it to the 9-5 (e.g., on the rear-view mirror for the base models and in the dash for the up-market models).

Jeff… I’m surprised you haven’t gone to JMK yet to take pics! LOL….

Hopefully saabusa.com will have more details about the differences between the Base, Premium, Aero trim levels. I know, I can read the spec sheets, but pics would be great.

Clay,
Congrats when you pick it up. Remember your dealers gone through this waiting game with you, I’m sure they feel like they’ve been waiting forever for your 9-4 too and you’ll have to have a huge celebration together when you pick it up. Waiting is the hardest thing to do, I hope you feel like it was well worth it once you pick up your beautiful new ride.

I can’t believe that some dealers don’t have any yet. International Motors has had the new 9-4x for over a week, and VOB SAAB has two on the lot now, too. I guess the Washington, DC dealers got lucky! After seeing the new 9-4x a few times, I can say that it’s stunning. It packs a lot of style, and it fills a big gap in SAAB’s US line-up.

MSRP of $35,800 including leather and XWD. Well done Saab. I would not focus on $50k models too much — the $35k price point (a bit less out the door!) is a great showing in this segment. I can see my actual family buying these.

That is like around 20.000 euro’s against today’s exchange rate. Or about a third of what we are supposed to shed out for a base NG9-5 here (Netherlands). Or what you pay for a 2007 9-5 2.0t Fleet (read: rep’s delight basic no-thrills version) Estate with 65.000 km on the clock. Or a Hirsched 2006 9-3 1.8T ragtop with 45.000 km. Or…well, you get my drift.

I think every US SU-er moaning about overelevated sticker prices should get a life ban here πŸ˜‰ .

I was just concerned about profits. Saab must be selling at a huge loss here..great for customers…not good for business-long term.

That is one hell of a car for that money-it is too good to be true really..and that tells me something is wrong somewhere..

Kurt Schirm

Toby, this is actually one of those too good to be true moments that really is that good. The 9-4X is extremely efficient for Saab to produce and does not have to contend with unfavorable exchange rates. At the current pricing, Saab actually holds a healthy profit margin. This is why the 9-4X is so important for Saab, especially in the US. They are able to go to market at a lower price than their core competitive group and hold appropriate profit. That said, when I drove one of ours down to a display at cycling event in Arlington, VA,… Read more »
