Griffin Video

July 21, 2011 in Saabology

A faithful reader named Nacho de la Fuente sent us this nice video showing a 9-3 Griffin =) I don’t know about you guys but I truly love the exterior of this car and having taken countless rides in mercedes and bmw taxi’s I feel that this car can really stand up to them for many years to come! It is truly a time-less design that simply works!

Review: 9-5 Turbo4 Premium by Left Lane News

July 21, 2011 in News

While we know the situation with the factory being closed I want to post this regarding Left Lane News that has tested a MY11 9-5 Turbo4, as this is pure joy to read. It’s not so much news for us Saab-nuts, but still it is a nice read.

With quotes regarding equipment like

Our no-option tester lacked a few optional goodies like self-guided parallel parking, laser cruise control, a 10 GB hard drive audio/navigation system, ventilated seats and a three-way adjustable sports suspension.

But it still impressed us with a high level of equipment that is optional on most rivals – things like Bluetooth, leather upholstery, active head restraints, rear side airbags, rain sensing wipers and passive entry with push-button start. It seems like the Swedes have had a lesson in adding value.

And if the 18.2 cubic foot trunk isn’t big enough, Saab will sell you a 9-5 SportCombi (that’s Swenglish for station wagon) next spring.

or the design like (more after the jump…)

Production postponed until week 35!

July 21, 2011 in News

Update: I’ve changed the question-mark in the title to what you see. Several news sites in Sweden report on a press release from Saab (as shown in the comments by Johan) that the production start at Saab has been postponed until week 35 (at earliest from August 29th), due to the fact that Saab has to reach agreements with all suppliers delivering parts for the production. / Carl-Henrik

ZE Saabs are in production

July 21, 2011 in News

TTELA reports the following (original article here) where they were taken for a test-drive in the ZE Saab 9-3:

Although no cars in Saab’s assembly plant is being produced there is intense work in the engineering department with new car models, not least 9-3 ePower. The estimated range is 200 km, and unlike other electric cars, it has an equally large luggage like a regular 9-3 hatchback. Read the rest of this entry →

Just-Auto: Suppliers helping Saab!

July 20, 2011 in News

This is an interview published by Just-Auto.com (original article here):

Nexteer held an electric power steering technology day this week at its Polish plant of Tychy near Krakow. Simon Warburton caught up with Nexteer VP of global sales and marketing and European region, Laurent Bresson, in the second interview he gave to just-auto, with his thoughts on the Japanese earthquake and difficulties at Saab.

j-a: To what extent was Nexteer affected by the Japanese earthquake and what lessons can be learned?

LB: It is critical to be diversified in terms of customer and supplier base, to have alternatives in case of this kind of event. I am amazed how the Japanese have actually been able to cope with the situation. Read the rest of this entry →

News from Russia

July 20, 2011 in News

Seems that SAAB has serious intentions concerning Russian market. Yesterday I took part in the roundtable, organized by Armand Import CIS. I acted as a member of SU team and as a moderator of saabclub.su.

First of all I would like to thank once again  Alexander Lyubartovich Alexander and Asel Moldakhmetova from Armand Import CIS for organizing this meeting, it was very interesting and informative.

My very first impression is that despite all the obstacles ( I mean difficulties that SAAB faces and complexity of Russian legal system) guys from Armand are set up quite seriously. The new 9-5 is now proceeding with the certification, that is why the date of official presentation moved on the 8th August. (if you’re registered at saabclub.su or saabnet.ru, I’m happy to say that there will be a pre-presentation on the 5th August). Read the rest of this entry →

Media: What might happen next week?

July 20, 2011 in News

There are many of us that do not favor Dagens Industri when it comes to reporting news on the situation for Saab. Yesterday evening I read a post on their site with the headline “Demands on Saab gathers at Kronofogden” (Kronofogden = sort of national financial enforcement authority). The article very shortly summons that over 100 suppliers demands/claims have been sent to them so they can recover the money from Saab. By the end of June there were about 80 cases at Kronofogden with a total sum of about 80 million SEK, and today that sum is higher with more than 100 cases.

The price of paper

July 20, 2011 in Uncategorized

Odd title? Answer can be found at the end.

Last Saturday my wife and I finally got rolling on our road trip from Sweden to Batumi, Georgia. That is about 4800 km on the road. We didn’t get moving until the afternoon, and I had some bizarre ferry-issues getting from Gedser to Rostock. I was told “maybe later tonight, some people have been waiting 6 hours”. I drove for half an hour and got on the ferry at Rødby instead. I was among the 10 first cars to board…! (VIP treatment because I have a roadtax-chip for the car)

Saab 9-3 TTiD MY11 - with Hirsch interior

TimR’s post yesterday stirred up emotions and reactions, which I think is very good that we have the possibility to discuss here at SU together. One reaction came through an e-mail from Paul, who also sent us this photo to the right of his MY11 9-3 TTiD that just has been on a date with Hirsch, which resulted in this nice interior.

This is what Paul wrote: “When people see Saabs, or have a drive in them, they become totally enamoured, this one is no exception. I picked it up yesterday, and out of the 6 previous Saabs i’ve owned, this is by far the best.

Rebuilding the brand name without spending money?

July 19, 2011 in Editorial

Today has been a very interesting day for me in many aspects, first it was the first time I went out flying again since about 2 weeks ago and second because my mind has been occupied with one very simple question, how to sell more Saabs and rebuild the faith in the brand?

Lets play a mind-game where we assume that Saab restarts its production and start producing cars again, what would be the next step. Well, faith and trust in the brand must be re-built, today its as bad as it could possibly get. There are some underlying basic facts that is happening right now that needs to be overcome:

  • Dealerships are closing down due to low sales
  • Salesmen are leaving dealerships to sell other cars since they make no commission by not selling any Saab’s.
  • Leasing companies are not allowed to order Saab’s due to the high risk and low sales figures for Saab.
  • Sales are shrinking to a level that I don’t even want to talk about…
