Saab of the Week: Fred the 9000 Frog

August 22, 2011 in Sotw

This weeks Saab is from the US, and Michelle Baxter:

My Saab most memorable Saab was Fred the Frog. Fred and I leaped every where througout the United States. Atlanta to Colorado? No problem. Atlanta to the Florida Keys? No Problem! Atlanta to New York? NO PROBLEM! But the best is when I would take Fred camping….. I could go where no four wheel drive could go! All you need is a little bit of turbo and a front wheel drive car….. and you can go anywhere!

This picture was taken at the top of a mountain in Tennesee. My friends and I went camping and caving. They laughed at the bottom of the mountain, telling me that Fred and I would never make it up to the top. As usual, me and my favorite Saab proved them wrong. The mud on the tires was a permanant look for my car.

  1. The Saab 9000 CC (pre-1992) is a very nice and good-looking car! I would like to see more of them on the road. :)

  2. Thank you for showing a 9000. I’ve owned two ( wish I had owed 3) and think that they are underrated even among the Saab faithful.
Ahh the memories :) carried a clothes dryer in the trunk in the trunk once and laughed at the amazed looks on faces.

  3. I had a 1997 9000 and still miss it. The early cars were more sporting and weighted a lot less, I think. Can anyone confrim this?

  4. Is Fred the Frog a white-pearl metallic or white. Looks like the first. If so it is quite a unique frog.

    • Fred the Frog was plain white, black leather interior, and a 5-speed. I put over 100,000 miles on him in two years. I really miss this car. I could pack all of my camping gear in the trunk and still have room for my friends. :)

  5. Yesss, we also had one, a 2.3. Turbo CS, it was smooth and very fast with an enormous turbo power… we loved it with black leather seats,,, changed it to a 9-5 Aero because of the many rust holes appeared on its bottom. And it was almost 20 years old.
