OctoberFest: Engineers – Saab 9-4x

October 6, 2011 in SAAB Automobile AB, SaabsUnited Related

This presentation is done by Peter Dörrich at the SaabsUnited Octoberfest. Unfortunately the video I shot of the event became corrupt as the SD card broke down. Lucky for us Anna, Runes wife also filmed the presentation and here it is:

  1. With a background in engineering, this presentation was very interesting. Now I got a feel for the car, and there are plenty of unique selling points. It’s a shame really, I don’t need one… I have a Toyota SUV with 7 seats for the school run and then the 9-3…
I saw Timmy ran around filming… SD cards can be tricky, but I always do a double low level format in the camera I will use it in…
    Thanks for the clip(s), though.

  2. The most interesting thing is the one why everybody asks for the failure of SAAB and when many people asks about what SAAB offered to GM, and when they say that a 9-5, 9-4x and so they are a GM car or they begin the reviews with, it’s a “GM platform” or has the “GM platform” or the engine comes from….etc….why they never say that SAAB was the leader of the project or developed the project or that Opel/GM uses the engine, platform, XWD, and tech developed by SAAB in the way it is in some technollogy.

Take a look at the speech of how SAAB Engineering helped Corvette Motorsport to make the car competitive, that’s astonishing!!!, SAAB giving the solution to a Sport car maker to make it’s car competitive??!! in a chassis manner…..and SAAB developing the double clutch gearbox for the next Corvette, this is like joke!! or Saab has more engineering power/knownledge…. than it seems.

    regards

    • There is probably a reason why one of Saab’s divisions was known as GM Powertrain Europe.

Jeremy Clarkson used to enjoy mocking american sportscars for their tendancy to only drive well in a straight line. Recently that seems to have changed. So yeah, it is not unlikely that the likes of Corvette have seen fit to take advice from some of Saab’s engineers.

      • That was the first thing it come to my mind, Clarkson words about American Cars…. jejejeje but it’s quite “stupid” as GM motorsport has some experience, and the C5 was decently competitive.

About SAAB Powertrain, the thing is that F35 gearbox used mainly in many GM cards was the one developed by Saab Gothenburg division. But it’s quite noticeable GM with those amount of resources and divisions worldwide show that amount of weakness in this issues that needs a small car company that many people say it was useless and with no “Tech” to offer, when for a key points for whole GM was SAAB who developed it. A good one was the 2.0 Ecotec engine with turbo, the one for the 9-3ss, and now used as SIDI version in many GM cars. We only need to take a look at the amount of projects and tech cancelled or “canibalized” by GM in the last 15 years.

Interesting about the first SUV project based on the Cadillac SRX, I read several years ago that GM didn’t like the evolution made by SAAB from Cadillac platform as it was “too good” and there was some fear that SAAB canibalized some Cadillac sales.

The good thing about the 9-4x is the size, is like an X5, ML or similar, but the price was near to the X3, GLK, that’s a great point!!

        regards

  3. So. I am in the city of Ottawa in Canada. If I wanted to buy one of these, where would I buy one, how much should I expect to pay (let’s say the base version for starters) and when could I expect to get it? I’m interested in the future success of saab but it is appearing difficult to be a part of.

  4. Tim, try this recovery software from lexar. It’s saved me several times from improperly formatted flash cards.

    Good luck!
