Saab And Safety A Readers Story And Life With Saab

November 20, 2011 in Editorial

I posted an article a few days ago about what makes a Saab driver a Saab driver and the responses are still coming in. I had noticed a very short response from David Mills and I pushed for more of a response and he told us why safety was such a big thing to him and it was quite moving. He also has owned about 15 Saabs over time and will tell us his favorites. I felt his response should be a post on its own and asked him to write a follow up to his response. We may not always agree on everything written on SaabsUnited and that is the beauty of a site like ours, I thank David for sharing this story.

Jason Powell has asked me to write an article about my experience with Saabs, as a follow up to his article asking why we on SU buy Saabs.  Jason asked me to elaborate on my answer to his question about why I have owned so many and why I am so loyal to the brand.

I have leased, or purchased, or helped to purchase, 15 Saabs for my immediate family since 1999.  So why so many?  Primarily safety.  I think pound for pound, Saabs are the safest cars in the world.

I am a safety nut, geek, and guru, and I must confess to a car safety obsession.  I realize that most people never think about safety the way I do.  Although safety is becoming more and more part of the car purchase equation today, that has not always been the case.  And in my early years of car driving, it was hard for me to find out any information on car safety no matter how hard I tried.  I am also a car nut generally, and had car magazine subscriptions for 30 years.  But I think it is fair to say that car magazines are very deficient at giving good safety information about cars.

Lord Rust pays a visit to my wife’s 9000

November 20, 2011 in Saabology

This does not look good

My favorite author is Terry Pratchett. One of his Discworld characters is Lord Rust who can be described as a an aristocrat who believes laws do not apply to him (and his patriotism is so great that he is convinced the state should be subject to his rule).

In the latest book, the son of Lord Rust had to leave the country due to some unfortunate ‘misunderstandings’. I believe he has now resurfaced… inside my exhaust system.

Lately my wife’s classic 1997 9000 CSE 2.3T (50th Anniversary model) has emitted a beefier and somewhat puffier engine sound than normal. I suspected a small leakage in the exhaust system and booked an appointment with my local dealer, Gustaf E Bil.

State of Nine Photo-shoot

November 19, 2011 in State of Nine

We’ve gotten some very nice exclusive photos from the photo-shoot of state of nine’s new catalogue. Dan who is a really good friend of ours even hired some models to really promote the products! We at SU especially like the registration plate frame!

Dan has recently done an amazing upgrade to his website and also added a huge amount new products which will be promoted in this new catalogue.

Among the new stuff is a lot of Saab Expression items that are sold at a very good price compared to what Saab used to charge for them, as well as a spare parts system where you can get spare parts from your car with really fast delivery!

State of Nine has been a long time sponsor of SaabsUnited, Dan even came all the way to Sweden to visit the Octoberfest personally!

Have a look at his site and browse the products, I found some really nice stuff that I’m putting on my list to Santa Claus! =)

Design Study: The view from behind

November 19, 2011 in Saabology, Uncategorized

Last week, we embarked on an in-depth look at a key visual element of Saab: The Saab Grill.  Now it is time for us to go for a short jog and get ourselves a good look at the view from behind.  Most of us like to think that this is a view that other drivers (excepting other lucky Saab owners of course) will be intimately acquainted with.  And just as we all want to sneak up on them with class, we want to zoom past them with style.  My limited artistic abilities and non-existent photo-shopping skills prevents me from providing a general diagram of the Saab back-side, as I did with the Saab grill.  But, it turns out that there is enough “going on”, visually speaking, that I believe the best way to proceed with our study, is to look at examples and point the various interesting facets of the design.  So without further ado, we have our first example: The Saab 900 SE

November 18, 2011 in Hirsch

At the end of the week that featured a lot of business stuff here’s something easier to start off the weekend. This picture above was featured in the Hirsch Performance newsletter that most likely has hit the inboxes of those who signed up recently. I wanted to bring two pics up here as they were not in all language versions. The first one above shows a 9-4x, that has be photochopped with the superb 19″ wheels from the 9-5. While this one is a slight outlook to what could be the next pic shows the 9-5 SC Hirsch Performance that could be ordered like that as soon as production starts: Read the rest of this entry →

Saab postpones the meeting with the creditors

November 18, 2011 in News

It seems like they are at least talking to each other and trying to get a positive solution for Saab. But at the same time it looks like till Christmas to find a solution.

Saab sets the meeting with creditors
Saab would meet with its creditors now on Tuesday was the plan.
The meeting is now set, the company announced today.
- First, we want to sort it out with GM, says information director Eric Geers said.

Related
The idea was to Saab Automobile would meet with creditors on November 22 to present a scheme of arrangement. The meeting has now been thrust forward, but no new date is exposed.

- We must find a structure that suits everyone, including GM. That’s the case, said Geers to TT.

Negotiations between the parties continues, according to Geer.

- Yes, there are intense negotiations. It is 100 percent focused on all sides, we also have a dialogue with GM, said Geers to TT.

Would not the deal be in port before, Geers hope to announce something more concrete before the Saab meets the district court to discuss an extension of the reconstruction. Due date for this is December 21.

SaabsUnited Talks Exclusively to North Street Capital

November 18, 2011 in News

Almost three weeks ago, Saab held their creditors meeting in Vänersborg, Sweden. Only days before, Swedish Automobile (Swan) negotiated for the complete sale of Saab Automobile to the Chinese consortium of Youngman and Pang Da. What seemed at the time like a savior for the company to tired suppliers, dealers, and the Saab community unraveled within days once GM lodged their unwillingness to license the technology that underpins current Saab models, in addition to ceasing 9-4X production.

While all of this has unfolded, North Street Capital (NSC) was working behind the scenes to purchase Spyker from Swan. At times they’ve been prepared to offer a more substantial influx of cash through bridge loans to ensure Saab’s creditors be paid, though these deals were put aside by Swan to focus on a Chinese deal. North Street is aware of speculation regarding their involvement in the sale of Saab. I spoke with Alex Mascioli, Managing Partner at North Street, who wanted to clarify their position in the current situation.

What Makes A Saab Driver Become A Saab Driver?

November 17, 2011 in Editorial, Poll, Saabology

As I drove to work this morning, I was thinking of the cars around me and thinking “what drives someone to buy this or that?” and it brought my mind back to Saab. Is it the little features or is it something all together different? I was stuck behind a newer Mustang at one point and what caught my eye was the rear turn signal lights and how they flash across three lights. To me this was a pretty cool look that was different from the regular flash of a turn signal and reminded me of the old Night Rider “Kit” car. Not enough to drive me to buy a Mustang, but clearly something that someone put some thought in to. Yesterday on SaabsUnited there was discussion about the 9-5 Aero steering wheel and some like it and some do not, but this is a feature that once you use it, you can tell right away that it is not just a “quirky” Saab thing and in my opinion should be used for all cars as it really makes driving more pleasurable.

This brings me to my point or rather my question to you, the Saab public, the people who have put their money out and purchased a Saab. I don’t care if your car is brand new or 10 years old or even older, what I want to know is what brought you to the Saab brand and has turned you into a Saab driver? I always hear of quirky this and that and to be honest, I don’t really like quirkiness being the explanation for what a Saab is because I don’t think it does justice to what a Saab is. Saab is a drivers car and I think it would be great to hear from Saab owners as to what made Saab the car for you.

Looking for The Deal

November 17, 2011 in Editorial

News are rare when it comes to the negotiations at Saab and we all are trying to understand what a solution could look like. In this post I put together my own view of what could happen based on what I’ve read and heard during the past two weeks. Not to say that this is the only way, just to point out what is most likely to me.

As we could read yesterday, Pang Qinghua, the chairman of Pang Da was heading for Sweden to further discuss the deal. MENAFN.com quote him as follows:

“Now GM’s attitude has eased up, and I will head for Sweden to have further discussions about related problems.”

Sure, he is as near to the talks as one can be, but I doubt that GM’s attitude has eased up. At least I can read that from all indications the SU crew has gotten from different sources. I would dare to say that a 100% Chinese ownership of Saab including all licensing as it is now will never happen as long as GM has a say.

Mother GM has come down with yet another sibling to big brother SAAB 9-5 and middle sibling Buick Lacrosse. They all share the same last name Epsilon 2. It is interesting to see how similar the siblings are and yet so different.
