Around Saab Snippets

November 17, 2011 in News

Things are still quiet from Saab, but there are a few things out there that are worth mentioning, even if they are not directly Saab related.

I think all of us remember that Geely had again after 2009 shown interest in taking over Saab (or just the best pieces, who knows) just a few weeks ago. WantChinaTimes report now that they are facing financial troubles:

The Chinese-language Capital Week, however, reported that Li and Geely Group have been stuck in a financial rut. Geely has reportedly started to contact private domestic and overseas equity funds, such as Carlyle and TPG, for fresh funding, in order to repay Goldman Sachs for high-yield bonds. Most of these private equity funds are cautious about the request, due to their concern over Geely’s ability to repay.

Saab scale models!

November 17, 2011 in Saabology

On Saablog-in, we found this great story about a person who really cares about Saab’s and scale models:

Griffin Models started as a natural continuation of a hobby, a passion. For over 20 years I was collecting my own collection of Saab models in scale 1:43. At one moment I noticed that there are too many missing models in the collection, not because I have not found them, but because they have never been produced. It turned out that many of the outstanding cars throughout the Saab history have not been noticed by the scale models manufacturers. This is why I decided it is my duty to find a way to make the missing scale models. Thus, from a collector I became a manufacturer.

We are proud to say that our scale models are not a copy of other models. Everything you are seeing has been made from scratch. Every single detail is carefully designed so that it fits the requirements for joining the parts and for other technological processes. The process of creating the scale models especially in white metal is very long and complicated, but soon it will be presented under a special section of the web site. We hope you will find it interesting!

FKG: Reconstruction is the way to go

November 16, 2011 in News

I stumbled across an article from Ny Teknik which points out why in Saabs case reconstruction is to be preferred over bankrupcy. It’s the better solution for all parties involved. Worth mentioning that this piece was written by Frederick Sidahl, CEO of the supplier organisation FKG.

Early on we, FKG – Automotive Suppliers trade association of automotive suppliers, the position to support a reorganization instead of bankruptcy for Saab Automobile. As an industry organization, we work to ensure that our members get the right business opportunities and bring their collective action in the larger context. Along with legal expertise in insolvency law was judged that the reorganization of Saab and not bankruptcy was to advocate for our members’ sake.

Ny Teknik on building Saabs without GM licenses

November 16, 2011 in Editorial, News

Ny Teknik have an interesting article on how Saab could produce cars without being bothered by GM:

GM can not stop Saab, or the person who buys the company from building a new generation cars. All the basic technology is controlled by Saab. Thus opens the way for Chinese Youngman and Pang Da.

The next generation of Saab cars are based on Phoenix, a kind of basic drawing and basic design that can be used for a number of new car models. It is controlled by Saab, unlike today’s cars, which GM owns a large part of the technology.

Driving the 9-4x Aero

November 15, 2011 in Events, test drive

As the German dealer tour came to Munich I was very happy to attend the event, not only because I wanted to see the cars and meet the team of Saab Germany. The main reason for me was that I had an offer to drive the 9-4x on the trip to Augsburg, which was the second date for that day. This was something that I had really been looking forward to, even more since Swade drove us around in a 9-4x at the SU Octoberfest.

Though it was a short drive I got to experience both city and autobahn driving. We started in the centre of munich. As with the 9-5, you don’t really feel the size of the car once you’re inside and I didn’t feel unsecure as I drove the car through the heavy traffic. It may be due to the higher seating position that I found it easy to judge the dimensions of the car from the first second – maybe even easier than with the 9-5.

Cars built today…

November 15, 2011 in News

Yep, you read it. Some cars were actually built in Trollhättan today. What’s going on is that Saab is right now reconfiguring the production line and there are a number of cars on the production line. From the end of the line to the media box where cars are fueled for the first time as well as all the fluids used in the cars are filled up there is space for about 50 cars.

Most of these have now been finished with parts “found” in different places. Sometimes cars are not built to the exact specification, most likely this has been discussed with the customer before.

There is a difference between SWAN and SAAB…

November 15, 2011 in Editorial, News

Today as I went through the news feed a headline caught my eye:

Saab may be forced into voluntary liquidation, even if sale to Pang Da and Youngman goes through

It appeared on Paul Tan’s Automotive News and I found similar headlines in a few other places, too.

It appears like they just didn’t get the difference between SWAN and SAAB because that possible liquidation scenario is exactly what SWAN were talking about for SWAN in their press info after the shareholders meeting last week. The contradiction in this headline, Saab will be sold and then liquidated, is obvious and almost comical but we know how such things can spread on the interwebs.

To clarify things, for those who did not read the SWAN info and for lazy journos, here’s a quote from Bloomberg:

Saab Auto Owner May Liquidate as Sale May Not Raise Enough Cash
Swedish Automobile NV, the Dutch owner of Saab Automobile, may liquidate even if it succeeds in selling the former General Motors Co. (GM) brand, as the proceeds may not be enough to pay off creditors.
Swedish Automobile, which has tentative agreements to dispose of Saab as well as its Spyker sports-car business, will consider “all of its options,” including a voluntary liquidation should the deals go through, the Zeewolde, Netherlands-based company said in a Nov. 11 statement.

Youngman taking place in joint venture company

November 15, 2011 in News

The Gothenburg Post who have been following the deal around Saab very closely reported the following this morning:

In the middle of the GM-Turbulence, Youngman has taken a place at the board for the development company that Saab Automobile created in september.

Saab formed a new company called Saab Automobile Development AB, for the chinese cooperation. In the board at the time was only CEO Victor Muller and business development manager Martin Larsson.
A change in the board has since then been idle with the government authority for companies.

But thursday a change was registered and Youngmans CEO Pang Qingnian as chairman in the new company, next to the second member Victor Muller. As extra Youngmans CEO Pang Caiping next to Saab’s extraMartin Larsson.

Remembering – Saab 9-5 Arc

November 15, 2011 in SAAB Automobile AB

It was in the summer, back in 2002, when I worked at Saab and I first got to see the 9-5 Arc. The model was meant to attract the luxury line of people with an all leather interior, V6 Diesel engine, 16″ wheels and a very special wooden dashboard. Many people hated the color of the wood, many people loved it. I was one of the ones who absolutely loved that car.

I first got to sit in a brand new one a few months later. That car had just rolled out from the production line and was placed in “hagen” the big parking lot where all the new cars were placed awaiting the trucks to take them to their customers. The car had the little green sticker on the front windshield. The smell of a new car was great, I can still feel it. It was always the first thing I wanted to experience every time I went in to the production plant in Trollhättan. I used to go to the first car I could see, open the door and smell it…  The seats were great, the best that Saab had ever made. One could literally drive for hours without getting tired.

Being fairly young at the time the only thing I thought that car was missing was the sports seat. My thought was that one must be able to combine sport and luxury. Well today, its exactly what Jaguar is doing…

Anyway the Arc version was rationalized away a few years later, Saab wanted to be pure sporty so luxury had to step aside. The V6 Diesel engine in that car was a constant pain for the people on the production line,  there was nothing worse than to get a right hand drive V6 Diesel… this one had most of the stuff on the wrong side and the engine was almost too big to fit into the car, which made the operators curse a few times as things were fitted very tightly.

Well in the end it wasn’t the operators building the car who were cursing, a lot of the drivers as well. The engine suffered many problems even though it was a great engine to drive with =) The best car I ever drove was a 9-5 Arc fitted with the 220 hp 2,3T engine that Saab had for a few years. That engine had just enough power to make you smile and not too much power to lose once license on every straight piece of road out there. That power packed with such a nice car filled with a luxury sensation was the best car for me!… its just a shame that I never bought one…

Tour de France continues…

November 14, 2011 in SAAB Automobile AB

Tour de France stopped around lunch time at the Creteil Dealership AVM, south east of Paris.

One precise thing is common to all stops around France so far ….

The smiles on the faces whether it is from the customers or the dealers and their staff.

Cars are praised as being the best Saabs ever from all aspects, technical or design.

The show must go on …

Talks continue…

November 14, 2011 in News

No big surprise that Eric Geers today confirmed to SVD.se that the talks with the chinese will continue even beyond November 15th. The only thing that happens tomorrow is that the MoU signed for 100% ownership in Saab expires, which means that a new solution will have to be found.

Automotive News: Why is GM acting that way?

November 14, 2011 in Editorial, News

Automotive News’ editor-in-chief Keith Crain published a post today that is worth a read. Here’s a quote:

Something is going on that I don’t understand.

By not approving the deal, GM is more than willing to let Saab close, costing thousands of jobs in Sweden, while letting its own Chinese partner have more technology.
