The day before the day

November 14, 2011 in Editorial

Today is the 14th of november, the day before the memorandum of understanding signed by SWAN and the Chinese companies Youngman and Pang Da for the complete sale of Saab will expire.

So what does this mean, well in the end not a lot. We have had confirmed comments from Victor that even the old 54% ownership of the chinese companies in Saab is off the table for GM. So what could we expect? Well, perhaps a deal of around 20% ownership, this would probably not be a deal that the chinese are going to agree upon. But like all negotiations both parties make counter bids and the deal ends up being somewhere half-way of what both parties actually wanted.

Many news papers have commented that, in case a much lower bid was to be signed and the “money problem” that Pang Da is supposed to have might force Pang Da to withdraw from the deal and in such Saab would loose their bid on the chinese market. Some even suggest that if someone else than the chinese comes in and takes over Saab that they even in that case would loose their chinese market. Well, I don’t know about BMW and Mercedes but as far as I know they do not produce their cars in China and they still sell like crazy over there… Read the rest of this entry →

A lot of small good news

November 14, 2011 in News

Starting with some news from France, this one came with an e-mail from a dear friend:

Eight o’clock sharp, two customers from Saab Rive gauche, the parisian dealer. They didn’t wanted to wait till Saturday when the Tour will stop by their own dealer, so they went to a southern Paris located dealer (roughly 30 km south) for a 9-4X test drive.

A test drive, happy customers. Now next step … an order

A very reliable source told us that the latest ups and down have not only generated in new cars in stock being sold, no less than 40 orders have come in from different parts of the world. When the chinese deal was signed a few weeks ago, people got a very needed positive boost, this actually resulted in potential customers no longer being potential anymore. Several dealerships reported sold new cars and very happy customers!

GM tech in Saab’s models

November 14, 2011 in News

This article is a few days old but I thought it would be an interesting read while we are waiting for news to come. It gives a bit of clarification which technology GM really has their hands on (from affarsvarlden.se):

Both GM and Saab have been reticent about exactly what GM has the rights. But Ny Teknik can sort out the details, model for model:

After Life Update – New Salem Becomes Albany Saab Shop/Albany Speed Shop

November 14, 2011 in Editorial, USA

As a sales manager at a Saab dealer in Canada, I have had the pleasure to meet through email some very great examples of dealers and managers in the US that seem to get what Saab is and needs to be. One such man is Darryl Carl and his story is anything but easy. We are working with Darryl from Albany Saab Shop who was formerly a 50 year Saab dealer at New Salem Saab to bring a story of determination and hard work to re create ones self. Many readers of SaabsUnited will remember Darryl Carl as a dealer that tried everything within his power to make things work in his part of the US. We celebrated with him when he his dealership hit the 50 year mark being one of the oldest dealers in America.

Shortly after reaching this milestone though, it was announced that New Salem Saab would be closing their doors forever. We all felt the pain of an owner who felt responsible for his staff and customers alike. New Salem had weathered the storm of the initial GM shut down of Saab and the start up of being an independent company with the ownership of Spyker as well as an economic down turn that plague the US and car dealers alike. I remember seeing post’s on SaabsUnited from Darryl talking about his new car pricing strategy of just over cost and service specials, it seemed like he and his dealership were willing to do whatever they could to get new customers and maintain their service customers. Through all of their struggles, Darryl for the most part stayed positive and never resorted to talking trash about a brand that was dear to his heart.

SAAB Dealer’s Grand Re-openning

November 13, 2011 in News

This letter came from our dear friend Peter Gilbert

On Thursday November 10, 2011 Concours Motors held their Grand Reopening Celebration. After remodeling the dealership all summer Concours, in Glendale, Wisconsin held a very special reception in their new showroom. This is the same dealership where Jay Spenchian presented me with the 9-5 in 2007. This time the adjacent showrooms were displayed in all their new glory.

The reception started at 4 pm as guests entered to view the very clean contemporary architecture and decor. Several marques each were displayed in their respective show rooms like Porsche, VW, Mercedes. Then Mazda shares with SAAB. Their BMW franchise is in a separate facility. The food was absolutely delicious and catered by Sazz’s. There were delectable German hors d’oeuvres: Like sausage strudel, braised julienned fennel with sweet peppers; Trollhättan pancakes with lingon berry compote; sushi; but my favorites were the Swedish delicacies consisting of smoked salmon on a scalloped roast potatoes, craw-fish pâte nestled on carved thick cucumber slices. Finally the best Swedish Meat Balls I have ever tasted anywhere.

The decor is very crisp and clean, very Scandinavian, German or Japanese, for that matter a great blend of ideas. This is a great dealership with wonderful service and staff and I really enjoyed mingling with customers talkie about my adventures with SAAB. The have with the helped so much with the assistance of Anders Hjertstedt, in Sales who not only supplied the photos but arranged for the SAABs in the Memorial Day and recent Veterans Day Parades which I was able to drive for our Veterans so they could be riding with honor.

It was a pleasure meeting Steve Keyes, Director of SAABs Western Region Sales, who came specially to be at the event.

The highlight of the evening was for me another SAAB milestone when at the end of the event, Cedric and Jackie Reed took deliver of their 15th Saab since 1985. That has to be a record. They bought the last 9-4X on the lot and it was next to a 9-5. In the picture you will see the huge difference in body size but like Dr who and his Tardis the interior debate will continue.

Fat Lady news snippets (What are GM and SweGov up to now?)

November 13, 2011 in News

Top Gear on Friday featured an article about Saab’s current predicament. Saab now only days from disappearing?.

It mentions what we have heard elsewhere, that the Swedish Government say they will try persuading GM to allow Saab continued access to GM technology and parts.

That’s big of them. The Swedish Government has been fantastically unhelpful to Saab ever since its funding crisis started almost a year ago. It has turned down various foreign investors and chucked several administrative spokes in the wheels.

It might be too late now for it to make sympathetic noises.

Saab 9-5: Graeme’s last report.

November 13, 2011 in News

Saab’s tale of woe in recent months has resembled a horror movie – but it hasn’t spoiled Graeme’s enjoyment of classy saloon.

Life with the Saab has been like a Hollywood movie recently. Not because of anything the 9-5 has done wrong, but because in the past couple of months the firm has experienced more twists, turns and heart-stopping moments than your average box office blockbuster.

Austrian dealer tour visit

November 12, 2011 in Events

As you probably know, besides Germany Saab toured in Austria as well, showing the 9-5 SC and 9-4X at dealers. I’m living not far from Vienna, so I decided to go and see the lovely new and hopely soon produced new ships. Saab Oberlaa was the target because of being there once already and seen there the new 9-5 sedan for the first time in reality.

Both, the 9-5 Sport Combi as well as the 9-4X were at the place. Of course in Aero. A bit nostalgic feeling came, because the 9-4X was exactly the same car presented at SaabsUnited Oktoberfest in Trollhattan. A petrol 2.8 Turbo6 XWD, nice 300 HP / 400 Nm and really good equipped. Great sound system. The 9-5 SC was a bit different from the one at Oktoberfest, the tour car was the BioPower version. Again a very fine and robust feeling from outside as well as from inside. Well I would like to have them both, if that would be tomorrow I wouldn’t resist at all :)

The Aero versions have also very nice dashboard, much more attractive than the other versions. Large trunks on both cars are showing their potential as practical and comfortable family cars.

What does Saab need to survive?

November 12, 2011 in Editorial

We’ve had a lot of discussions with some guys in the crew about what Saab could be reduced to, to just survive for the next two years? And the conclusion is to cut variants and perhaps reduce the price of the cars by getting a better price from suppliers by buying more of the parts they actually do buy…

We all know that its about 14-15 months before the next gen 9-3 is ready for launch, btw if Saab names that car anything else than a 9-3 I’ll be disappointed. Anyway right now, regardless of how you look at it the 9-3 Griffin is an amazing car, it has the looks, it has the quality and it has the attitude and so does the 9-5 BUT…

Spam protection installed

November 12, 2011 in SaabsUnited Related

The new version of SU, made it a bit easier to register for a new account, unfortunately this allowed a user to register and that user started to send out spam via the private message system.

We’ve installed a security question option in the registration form which should make it more difficult for bots to register.

OFF-TOPIC: How to teach people…

November 12, 2011 in Off-Topic

Training of staff is such an important issue for any company, especially for us pilots and other staff within aviation. This could relate a bit to big brother GM and Saab sitting there not knowing what to do… However you look at it, it is very amusing! =D
