Welcome to SaabsUnited Version 2,0
November 11, 2011 in SaabsUnited Related
A bit sooner than expected, but we got everything ready and pressed the dangerous install button! =)
SaabsUnited Version 2,0 is now up and very much alive, there are tons of new features, but more are coming soon, we just need to test them a bit more to see that they work as well as we expect them to!
A lot of the old features have been deactivated for now but they will also come online in a little while…
- You can create your own profile, it will become bigger soon!
- You can join user groups, some are online now, more are coming
- You can become friends with other users here on SU and communicated directly with them either publicly or privately
- You can see what other users are doing and view their profiles
- Look at the activity page to see who just logged on or who just wrote a comment and much more…
- MUCH MORE COMING SOON! =)
ENJOY! =)

Nice fresh look. A fresh new beginning
Tripod said on November 11, 2011
And there it is; a click or two on F5 et voilà, 2.0. Nice.
(Know there is lot of testing and work going on; but seen from the outside…)
Tripod said on November 11, 2011
Quotes within comments (or in the blog posts) have a bit larger font (and different); maybe too large? For me, the other way around would almost be better (we often see a discussion about readability at forums and blogs, especially when changing software), but that’s usually solved quite easily with the browser, for text in general. Still perhaps the quotes should be slightly smaller. We’ll see how this works when people start using it, quoting each other and other articles.
TimR said on November 11, 2011
There are lots stuff we’re going to tweak as time goes on… things like that =)
Tripod said on November 11, 2011
I guessed that; and I also read that you will both add old things, as they are tested with the new template/software, and add new things, so I guessed that you would tweak a lot over time, and this is very early. I just wanted to give some early feedback.
TimR said on November 11, 2011
We always love feedback =) The things that are closest on the list is to get the visitor maps and stuff back online, we just want to see how well this thing works when its clean first and see what kind of changes we might have to do if the site reacts poorly under pressure…
The second thing that’s coming back is the forum and some other system-related features…
There is also a feature coming soon that allows users to build their profiles, upload photos in their own albums etc =)

I replied to your comment above via the Activity tab, just to see where it would end up. As with previous version, and quite many blogs, there is a limit on “nested” comments.
Anyhow, that comment did not go any further than the Activity tab. Perhaps I should go and read the manual, and try to understand why there’s a possibility to reply to comments in that tab, what it’s supposed to do.
Paddan said on November 11, 2011
I like it a lot. Thank you SU.
JasonPowell said on November 11, 2011
Starting to get a feel for things now. The activities tab at the top is kind of like the old right hand side of the page that you would see most recent comments, I would think this will be a popular tab, as you can see all the recent replies there and comment on them right there.
Tripod said on November 11, 2011
I did a comment there, but I can’t see it here. Could be a bit confusing.
GerritN said on November 11, 2011
Somehow I liked the most-recent-comments side bar better. All information was contained on one page, just had to scroll a bit. Now you have to click-open something else, click-back etc. This works OK if there are a lot of threads with a few comments each, on SU there is just a few threads per day with a LOT of comments per thread.
TimR said on November 11, 2011
The thing is that we do a lot of posts, about 5-10 per day, sometimes even more… finding a good way for the system to handle that many comments coming in all the time has been difficult. I think this is an ok solution for now until we find something better…
But the side-bar solution was not a good thing in the long run as comments sometimes never stayed on that for more than a few minutes…

This is pretty much the only “social networking” site I like on the whole web!

It looks really great! I am only visiting the site from my phone now but I will try to evaluate it more later today. But this far I am impressed, great job!

Very nice and clean look! Good work SU-team

Nice!
But I have one thing I think would be great,
The searchbutton and the dropdownbox (members, gropus, posts) , could you make it under the searchfield?
It takes upp so much space now.
I don’t use browser over the whole screen, have some space for my messeging (Pidgin).

Kudo’s, simply beautiful! The login is yet a bit bumpy – the login-page can’t be found, but login through wordpress works. That’s for sure just a temporary pothole
JoppeVR said on November 11, 2011
Beautiful new look!
And how are the numbers of visitors? More or less?
TTAero said on November 11, 2011
The look and feel is great. But I’ve got a question. How mush of this fancy stuff is conected with the facebook thingy?
Noticed the “friends” and “groups” section and was alerted at once! :-S
TimR said on November 11, 2011
Nothing is connected to Facebook, everything is SU stand-alone!
TTAero said on November 11, 2011
Great!
Troels, Denmark said on November 11, 2011
Nice.
But I do have two smaller crititical remarks:
1.The names off the commenter’s – with the small letters in light blue – can be a little hard to read…
2. If one – purposely – use a window which is a little to narrow, the text- and picture-columns shrimps, while thr announcement-column remains in full width. Before one could – purposely – see the text and pictures in full width and hide one of the announcement-columns – which was really good!

Feedback: Does not look all too good with IE7. The banner tabs are vertical, and the banner is duplicated vertically…
There are quite a few poor b*sterds sitting in companies around the globe that only allow IE7…
TimR said on November 11, 2011
We’ve tested it on IE7 and it looks just fine, are you sure its not some local settings?
Ken H said on November 12, 2011
Ok, then it’s probably due to some settings…
saabboy1 said on November 11, 2011
I like it. It’s different but I’ll get use to it:)
JH said on November 11, 2011
Will it be possible to edit one’s comments now?
TimR said on November 11, 2011
Sorry no…
ivo 71 said on November 11, 2011
Like some others, I gues I will need a bit of time to get used to SU 2.0 but I already do appreciate the new, clean layout.
I do, however, have a few little practical points to make:
- please put the posting times back. It makes it much easier to refer to a previous post when you write a comment further down the thread. You know: “your Nov. 5, 11.05″.
- could you make the letters in the threads a bit more contrasting with the background (i.e. darker)? The greyish colour is stylish but also a potential problem for people with less than perfect vision. I have had to zoom in a bit to be able to read the content without straining my eyes. The letters in the comment window are darker and much more legible, so why not in the thread itself?
- I have trouble understanding how to use the HTML tags and attributes under the comment window. Would it be possible to make it a little more convenient to use? Like using ticks for ‘bold’ and ‘end bold’ or something like that. I would also appreciate a simple method to use a quote. Like a tick for ‘Quote’
. I have to confess that I never found out how to use the quoting opton in the previous version of SU either so I guess it may be my own dinosauric problem.
- the comment window could be bigger or offer the option of being enlarged by pulling it out, like in the old version. That would limit the need for constant up-and-down scrolling when you are editing a comment before posting.
- I preferred the old way of seeing the most recent posts in a side bar. I used them a lot to see where I want to go after I have just arrived at SU after a while off-line and after having browsed the first thread and choosing where to ge next. Now I have to go to the activity page to do that. It adds an extra action and is, therefore, imho less user-friendly.
Ivo
TimR said on November 11, 2011
Well the recent comments might be less user-friendly but it cleans up the site a lot more.
The rest of the features we’ll have a look at. We can’t make everyone happy but regarding the fonts we’re already working on that! =)
ivo 71 said on November 11, 2011
Thnx Tim. BTW, there is a lot of empty space under the right-side sidebar ads. I don’t think a ‘recent comments’ feature under those would make the new site a lot more cluttered.
Ivo
GerritN said on November 11, 2011
+1
TimR said on November 11, 2011
That empty space depends on what is displayed on the page, if there is a page with only some small contents then there is no more space…
Khrisdk said on November 11, 2011
The recent comments had one advantage over the activity component is that it actually jumped to the comment, not to the post.
It is OK to handle and do with activity component, but I have always liked last comment because it is so quick.
The disadvantage is as mentioned by TimR that comments disappear in a split second when things are heating up.
Tripod said on November 12, 2011
In the Activity tab I click on the last words such as “sometime ago”, or “40 minutes ago” etc.; that takes me to the comment instead of the post.
But I agree that the Recent comments-thingy had the advantage of being on every page, front page as well as individual posts; though as mentioned it could quickly become quite useless, if a lot of comments in a short period. As always some things get better, and some may miss some old features. For example it’s easier to find old comments now.
I would like to see time and date being used a bit more, in comments and posts.
Khrisdk said on November 13, 2011
Ahh..Missed that little clever feature..
Now duly noted and will save me a bit of scrolling
Zizou said on November 11, 2011
And it peforms great with my smartphone`s browser!!!
Hans H said on November 11, 2011
It seems as if this SaabsUnited 2.0 is more friends with my Samsung GT-5560. I always tried to use the phone-friendly small-screen variation but I always ended up with the big-screen edition. Which was very tough to read without magnifying glass.
elantiq11 said on November 11, 2011
New pages difficult to read with small type face of grey letters on white page. Is it possible for you to make typeface larger, darker or bolder? Thanks.
katar1na said on November 11, 2011
Sure love the new SU =)
- Do agree with above though that higher contrast (black letters) would be better.
- Recent posts in side bar is really functional
- The HTML tags and attributes below the comment box… eh??
Seem to work nice in Safari/Firefox on Mac as well as IE/Google Crome on PC.
(But please do not go as far as Facebook when it comes to take control of the users – if so, I´m out of here).
Love SU
Yes I DO
TimR said on November 11, 2011
The only thing we do with our users is love them for coming here! =)
We’re not interested in trying to make money by doing all that type of crap which Facebook does…
GerritN said on November 11, 2011
I’m probably just too old for Facebook, but I find its interface totally unintuitive.
