Happy New Year 2012!

December 31, 2011 in SaabsUnited Related

I just want to wish everyone on behalf of all the great guys in the SU Crew that I’m so happy to call my friends, a happy new year ! =)

This year has ended with SU setting a new record in amount of visits to the site, right now more than : 1’243’500 visits during the month of december. Even though the bad news on the 19th of course contribute to this, it still shows that Saab is very much alive and we the fans are here to stay! We will never ever give up! =)

2011 is something we will never forget, but I truly believe that we can make 2012 a year to remember! I for one have great hopes that we as a community can do great wonders that will contribute in the re-birth of the brand we all love so much! =)

Have a great evening everyone! =)

Great news from Poland and Denmark

December 31, 2011 in News

I’m starting off by announcing some great news I heard yesterday, that the Danish Saab dealers have decided to honor the warranty of new cars themselves. This is a fantastic tribute on their part!

Also from Poland comes a very nice letter:

Hey guys,

I hope you are getting ready / celebrating the New Year in good spirits and good company.
As there have been quite a lot of bad news coming down the Saab way, I would like to share a tiny, yet important snippet of those good!
Namely, our importer, Polar Import Polska (part of Polar Mobil Kft, which has already garnered some praise from SU and the community) decided to honor the warranties on all Saabs sold by themselves until the very end. That means that owners of new
Saab 9-3s and 9-5s from the Spyker era, including myself, will enjoy warranty benefits and free warranty servicing should our cars break down (which they tend not to) at authorised dealers the same way they did before the bankruptcy. Saab 9-3s were sold with a standard two-year warranty, while Saab 9-5 owners enjoy the extended, three-year coverage.
It is important to note that Polar is reimbursing the dealers for servicing and parts out of their pockets, all the while having no more new vehicle sales in Poland, as they have managed to clear out their stocks before Saab went bankrupt, which is a feat in itself (importers and local Saba organizations were reportedly left with stocks of unsold vehicles around Europe), and dealers have next to no vehicle to sell as well. This shows a strong interest in new Saabs and a commitment among the customer base to Saab.
This should be a clear message to potential new owners pondering whether to restart production of Saab-branded cars in Sweden.
By the way, we are busy organizing our local “We are Saab” event on Saturday, January 14th, and Polar went out of their way in supporting Saab Klub Polska to an unprecedented extent.
Again, have a great time tonight and may 2012 start off the right foot for you all. Thanks for all the great work in 2011, we love you!
Kindest,
Jeremi

The Trollhättan local newspaper have decided to spread the message of our campaign to Save the Saab Museum! I think this is really nice of them and they have even shared the e-mail address where people can announce their intention to contribute!

So far over 200 people have registered in just one day, I find this very impressive! If you want to join in, please read this post that I wrote earlier today and send us an e-mail.

Lets get EVERYONE working together on this! If we don’t work together, we will fail…

Bloomberg: Saab Automobile Said to Attract Interest From India’s Mahindra

December 30, 2011 in News

Dec. 30 (Bloomberg) — Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., India’s biggest sport-utility vehicle manufacturer, is interested in buying at least parts of bankrupt Swedish carmaker Saab Automobile, two people familiar with the situation said.

Mahindra, based in Mumbai, is in the process of reaching out to the two court-appointed administrators who are overseeing Saab’s bankruptcy to possibly buy parts of the carmaker or the whole company, said the people, who declined to be identified because the plans are private. Mahindra has yet to hold discussions with the administrators, the people said.

Roma Balwani, a Mahindra spokeswoman, declined to comment, while Chief Financial Officer Bharat Doshi wrote in a text message that he was in a meeting and wasn’t available to talk. Saab filed for bankruptcy Dec. 19 after running out of cash. General Motors Co. sold the Trollhaettan, Sweden-based company in February 2010 to Dutch sports-car maker Spyker Cars NV, which later changed its name to Swedish Automobile NV. Saab first halted production in March, unable to pay suppliers. Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller said this month that several parties had expressed interest and that Saab still has a chance to emerge from bankruptcy. At least one Turkish company is also interested in investing in Saab, one of the people said. The Turkish government wants the country to have a car brand of its own, and is trying to help a manufacturer take over at least parts of Saab, the person said. Hans Bergqvist and Anne-Marie Pouteaux, the attorneys handling the bankruptcy, didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.

Saving the Saab Museum

December 30, 2011 in News, Saabology, SaabsUnited Related

Today is the last day that the Saab Museum is open to the public, if it will open after new years is depending on the will of the receivers and if a potential buyer is found that is willing to take over the museum itself. It is our belief that the museum should be separated from Saab the company!

We want to save Saab Car Museum… if we have to! This is a very important phrase, because we might not need to. But as I have hinted before we have been working on different backup plans for many months drawn different conclusions from that. I have today had a long and very constructive talk with Karl Ask chairman of the Swedish Saab Club and we agree completely on how things needs to be done if we as a world-wide community are to make a contribution of this size.

No individual organization or small club has even a chance to actually save the museum, it needs to be a united action by people, clubs from all over the world if this is to work! Even so we might not be able to do it.

Here is part of the plan which might be the way to save the museum, note the word “might”…

1. Start an association “Club”, for example called the Saab Cars Museum Association (SCMA)
2. Anyone who wants to join in and contribute to saving the museum needs to become a member of this association and pay a membership fee which will be used to cover the running-costs of the museum.
3. Clubs around the world will need to commit to aiding the association with funds to preserve the cars and cover costs, details about how this will be done is private information for each club.
4. A 5 year pure business plan needs to be established on how to cover costs
5. A 10 year plan to display the vision of the association needs to be established
6. Rules and regulations needs to be established
7. The people who will do the actual work will need to display their interest.
8. An temporary management group of the association needs to be established which will run the association for one year until a more permanent team can take over.

This is a joint effort by the whole Saab Community world wide. SaabsUnited is NOT a leading factor in this but only a small contributor and a part of the big picture.

To do this we will need the support of EVERYONE! If you are willing to join in this cause, we want to know. That is why we have created an e-mail where you can declare your intention to join the cause and become a member of the association once it starts. The membership fee is not yet established but should in my mind be in the regions of €50,- / $65,- per year. The people working on this project will do so completely without payment and no company will be involved or any purpose of profit making for anyone except to cover ongoing and future costs for the association.

Please declare your intention to help out at museum@saabsunited.se

How serious is this India-based company?

December 29, 2011 in News

Well its not just serious, it is very serious. We are not allowed to reveal the identity of the company yet, but we are allowed to reveal some facts about it.

They are of course based in India but acts on a world-wide basis with much more than 100’000 employees worldwide. They are a multi-billion dollar company, that work on multiple fields such as energy, logistics, real estate and of course within the aerospace and automotive industry.

In other words, a VERY serious buyer of Saab!

Indian company not welcome

December 29, 2011 in News

P4 West can reveal that one of Indias biggest car-manufacturers are interested in buying Saab Automobile. But the receivers refuse to meet with the company. This message was given to the company thursday night.

The India-based company is interested in buying parts of or the whole of Saab. The company also considers production in Trollhättan. The manufacturer scheduled a meeting with the receiver Hans Bergqvist at the law-agency Delphi in Gothenburg. The meeting was to take place on thursday January 5th. But thats where the endeavor stopped. The receivers canceled the meeting yesterday night.

Who’s to blame?

December 29, 2011 in Editorial

I just spent a couple of minutes reading through an article written by the head economy reporter at the evening paper “Expressen”, I’m not going to link to it because its just pure rubbish. In the article he sort of wants to show that he was right all along about Victor Muller being liar and that Vladimir Antonov was not to be trusted. He also stated that he predicted Saabs bankruptcy long ago… wow, I could have written that and taken a 50/50 chance and been right…

So who is to blame for what happened at Saab, a lot of people are now starting to hint that they want to put the blame on someone, of course, this natural. GM, Victor Muller, The Marketing Department, Production, Engineers, The Cars, Dealers?… well I’m going to take a stand right here!

I think all of them tried the best with the abilities and means they had but it just didn’t work. What didn’t work needs to be analyzed so the same actions are not repeated, learn from it.

Nobody is to blame, but a lot needs to be learned…

The Company Men

December 29, 2011 in Off-Topic

I just watched a movie that was truly inspiring and so in with what is going on in Trollhättan and with everyone losing their jobs. This movie is VERY good and with actors like Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper.

The movie tells the story about the shipyards in the US during the recession, lots of people losing their jobs. Its a very good reflection about how people react when becoming unemployed and what kind of sacrifices that people have to make, the change in lifestyle, taking up another job that is something completely different than before. Even personal sacrifice…

The best part is the end though, starting up new industry hiring back people and working with the same values that existed once the original company was started. I truly hope that Saab will survive this low or at least rise up based on the same values as when it was once created…

A really good movie that I highly recommend and as stated, it is a movie that really describes the situation the people in Trollhättan are going through right now!
