Why January 14th could be very important for Saab and Saab owners

December 25, 2011 in Events

NOTE: I’ve just been reminded that some gatherings will be on the 15th rather than on the 14th. Check outside-saab.com for when a gathering will be on in your area (or start one yerself!). Obviously, what’s written here is applicable to all, regardless of the date.

——

Greetings from the dark side of bankruptcy. It’s been a difficult week for everyone, I’m sure. Personally speaking, I’ve spent most of it responding to email and figuring out the same question that’s probably on many sets of lips right now – what next?

The immediate future of Saab as a car company is in the hands of those with the authority and the resources to make decisions about it. The sad fact about that situation is that their intentions when it comes to Saab’s facilities may not be the same as what you or I would hope them to be.

I’ve written numerous times about the incredible talent and product that’s been locked up within the fences there in Trollhattan. Like others, I still find it hard to believe that the stuff on the drawing board may never see the light of day with the name ‘Saab’ emblazoned across it.

Plans are afoot to make January 14 a day when the fans of the brand can add their voice to the conversation. Meetings are being planned around the world right now. Saab fans will gather and at the very least, celebrate a car company that means something special to them.

From my perspective, January 14th offers a couple of different opportunities.

If Saab is still a chance to be sold as a whole company, January 14 offers a simliar opportunity to what we were presented with the Saab Support Convoys back in January 2010. It’s a chance to keep the sale in the spotlight, and perhaps more importantly, it’s a chance to let any potential buyers know that there’s a significant community supporting this brand’s continued existence.

If the worst happens, and Saab is broken up by then (or a decision is made to do so), then the Saab community needs to consider it’s own future. This is a chance to not only celebrate the brand’s 64 years, but also a chance for people to get together and see just how big the global Saab family is.

I’m not sure what direction Tim has planned for SaabsUnited in the event Saab is no more, but I think the site can have a vital role to play in continuing to celebrate the culture of the company, as well as providing an important global portal for connections between clubs and enthusiasts. There will still be great opportunities for many years to come in terms of the community and I think SU has a great base to take a role in that.

Whichever way things work – and we all truly hope that someone recognises the value in this company and things work out well – January 14 can, and should, be a red letter day for Saab enthusiasts around the world.

If you want to get a gathering going where you live, I believe things are all being centrally coordinated through the Mad Dutchies ™ over at outside-saab.com. In January 2010, we had around 10,000 people, in 6,000 vehicles driving in 60 cities around the world.

That ought to be a decent benchmark, eh? Get on board.

Saaby Christmas everyone!

December 24, 2011 in Editorial

Here is an explanation why Till is the one writing the x-mas post, Tim is out flying… hopefully the thing on the right won’t happen, if Santa doesn’t show up, you’ll know why ;)

Today is the 24th, so we here in Europe celebrate Christmas while the US guys still have to wait another day. So I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everybody out there a Merry Christmas. This year, just like two years ago Christmas is overshadowed by uncertainty for many working at or for Saab. While bankrupcy is sad in itself, it is even worse that this had to happen at that time of the year – again.

I have been very close to the events at Saab in 2009 and got closer and closer until today. I have also made many friends at Saab. They always made me feel like I am part of a family, the Saab family. I know that many of them don’t even dare to have hope any longer, as the past three years have been pretty exhausting for all. You went from the ultimate low to a high feeling and now back to an ultimate low again. I hope you can nevertheless enjoy a few days with your family and get some rest from what is going on. To all those Saab employees – if I could, I’d shake everybodys hand to thank you for all your efforts during the process and for all those great cars you designed and built for me. I admire the Saab spirit and I truly hope that you can continue your great work in Trollhättan.

Here’s to the community that welcomed me with open arms three years ago and made me a part of it. You are like an extended family for me and I am glad that I could meet quite a few of you in person over the past years. I hope you can also find a bit of peace while being among your family in the next days. This hunt for news we have been exposed to has been hard, and in the end quite a bit disappointing. Still, there is hope and if we can make a (late) Christmas gift to the people at Saab it is to create big events on the 14th and 15th of January to show the world that we are many, that we stand by our brand and that we want Saab to survive. The community could do that once with the convoys, let’s do it again. Make yourself heared.

If you should wonder why you should take those efforts, just take a look at the photo that Tim posted. Those are some of the people we are doing that for. And if this is still not enough, you are doing it for yourself, too. To be able to get a new Saab for many years to come.

Merry Christmas From The Dealers

December 23, 2011 in Editorial

Tim had asked me earlier this week to do a post about the dealers and to tell everyone that we are here and still ready to help. Truth of the matter is I was so angry at the start of the week that I couldn’t see myself writing anything that didn’t come across that way. As the week has gone on and my mood has shifted, I thought now would be a good time to speak.

Our dealership and many others are and will continue to be in business and are ready and willing to help you in every way we know how. It is true that warranty work is on hold right now as we await further clarification from SCNA and we expect that shortly. As our world is so web based now that I have noticed countless Saab dealers addressing this on their facebook pages to their customers and friends. What I would say most of us are not doing is, we are not and will not be taking part in any kind of “FIRE SALE”. I have seen and heard of some very silly ideas of what kind of credits people assume they can get now and at least one dealer that has decided to somehow do this.

We the Saab dealers have weathered many storms and have a lot of that same Saab fight in us that you see in Sweden and we will keep fighting. Our dealerships are more than just a way to make money and sell cars, our dealerships are also our family and friends. Take a look at your Saab dealer and find out how long most of their staff have been together, we are a family and it shows through the service you have come to expect and in the way the we will continue to fight for this great company and you our friends.

The upcoming “We Are Many, We Are Saab” events are truly touching to see take shape. You can imagine that the dealer staff has been upset by the events that have happened and for us it is a nice reminder that Saab fans across the world are coming together for us too. This event is about every part of Saab from the suppliers to the employees and dealers. Remember that we are with you all the way and nothing can ever take that away from us.

I do feel a great amount of hope in Saab emerging from bankruptcy as a stronger company with strong financial backing. I think that with Youngman in Sweden and other possible owners looking to submit bids or possibly already submitted bids, the hope has never left and as I type I feel my strength coming back to me. We are an incredible group of people who believe in Saab and I don’t think another brand can truly compare when it comes to a love of a brand. We are many, we are Saab and will continue to be Saab.

From all of the Saab dealers worldwide, Merry Christmas and happy New Year. To all my Saab friends at dealers across the world, Merry Christmas to you and yours and we will get through this as we stand together as Saab. I invite all other dealers to add a personal message here as well.

We must save the Museum

December 23, 2011 in SAAB Automobile AB, SaabsUnited Related

This are the words written in countless of e-mails sent to us! And yes, I have been thinking exactly that for the past 6 months and have investigated greatly in what would be required if such a thing would be done, this is no easy task!

What most people don’t realize is how extreme this task is, it would be the one biggest single thing any fan-group would have done ever! It is an extreme financial undertaking! I have had contact with Peter Bäckström, the custodian of the Saab Museum in this matter a few months ago. I have had contact with lawyers, banks and many more regarding this issue so please take the things I’m writing below VERY seriously!

Hero buyer of a 9-5 today in Stockholm

December 23, 2011 in News

Arne taking delivery of his new (9000km) 9-5 Aero today.

Click Here! YouTube movie from the delivery!

My good friend Arne decided to get a NG 9-5, together we did some scouting around Sweden and found a specimen that fulfilled Arnes ideas of a perfect Saab.
It had to be XWD and Automatic gearbox. Svenska Bil in Akalla had the car it was used by the Saab Sales Manager, so I guess he will have to borrow Santas sled or something this christmas.
Arne traded in two of his nice Saabs, a breathtakingly beautiful 9-3 AERO CV TTiD 2008 (now for sale at Svenska Bil with low milage) and a 2006 9-5 SC Vector.
What a christmas gift for his family to pick up a car the day before christmas eve. I showed one of his sons how to operate Apple Garageband on the iPhone connected to the Harman Kardon system in the car. Believe me that family will have a blast on any drive.
Arne and family is wished a really relaxing christmas by the SU crew, best spent in the new Saab 9-5 on the roads in Comfort mode on the DriveSense.

Reminder: Never ever give up!

December 23, 2011 in Editorial

A few days have passed now since the evil term “bankrupcy” got reality for Saab. As we could see over the last days there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to get the company out of this and restart operations. There are plans that look quite promising and even better, there is more than one party interested. So it is fair to say that Saab still has a chance to survive.

On a personal note – I have looked deep inside my soul and asked myself if I can still believe in a good outcome. The honest answer: yes. My belief that Saab will make it is maybe even bigger than before bankrupcy. Why? Because for any investor it is a much better starting point when debts are written down. This could maybe egalize the additonal costs of the resstart which will surely take more effort when it comes to for example the dealer network. A solution has to be found rather quick but I believe that this is possible. All involved know how vital it is to get something in place within weeks rather than months if they want to get hold of a Saab that is still alive.

Some of the true heroes at SAAB

December 23, 2011 in News

These are some of the many true heroes of Saab, they belong to the department on the production line called Tilt/Final 1 also called with the code DPMBA, each department in the company has it’s own 5 letter designation. Yesterday these people did their last day at Saab as official employees. Some will return for some tasks still left undone but most of them might not ever step into the factory again…

The people here took this picture on their last day at work yesterday and the names of these people are from the left to the right:
Agneta Carlsson, Marcus Fjällstål, Henrik Kujala, Lars Larsson, Juan Carlos Vinatea, Petri Laitala, Magnus Eliasson, Uno Gustafsson, Sarkis Banous, Magnus Emanuelsson, Pierre Jonsson, Kalle Sjöberg, Daniel Büttner, Christer Karlman, Susanne Westring, Catrin Andersson, Daniel Johansson, Jukka Rokka, Anders Hernvall, David Hermansson and Jimmy Johansson.

Yep, my father is one of them… =)

Some of the things done on the cars where these people worked are: Tilting the car and mounting fuel tanks and refilling pipes, fuel / brake lines, air-shields, the rear hatch interior with lighting and electrics, mounting the body to the chassis and securing the undercarriage of the car and lots more! =) Not a single person in this team left, all of them stayed until the end, which was the case at most departments at Saab, truly fantastic people, all of them!

Parts for your Saab will be available!

December 22, 2011 in News

I have just had a very nice conversation with Lennart Ståhl who is the CEO of Saab Parts in Nyköping.

He has informed me that parts for Saab cars is not a problem however, delivery times could sometimes be longer. Saab Parts, through Saab Tools owns and operates tooling for all the Saab parts. These tools are located with various suppliers and can be moved to other suppliers if needed. There are a lot of manufacturers in the world who can produce small series of parts with these tools. Some of the these tools are actually a complete production line, that needs to be assembled and dismantled when the supplier shifts from producing parts for different cars, this process is a bit longer and larger series needs to be produced once the tooling is up and running.

Tooling for the first generation 9-5 was sold to china in 2009. Prior to the sale Saab Parts made sure that life-time use of parts for these cars were produced and those parts are now in stock in Nyköping.

Regarding Warranty of Saab Cars – Update #3

December 21, 2011 in News

UNITED STATES:
Statement made by GM on 20/12/2011: DETROIT — In the event Saab cannot or will not fulfill its obligations to administer the warranty programs with its U.S. and Canadian dealers through Saab Cars North America or otherwise, General Motors will take necessary steps to ensure that remaining warranty obligations on Saab vehicles marketed by GM in the United States and Canada will be honored. (original website here)

EUROPE
Warranty claims are not covered by Saab Automobile AB as stated in the market call on 19/12/2011. (click here) Individual dealers my offer warranty on cars as a good will towards the customer but they will not get their expenses covered by Saab. The administrator for the reconstruction can change this and grant warranty for Saab’s cars if he/she chooses to do so.

WORLD WIDE
SAAB Parts continue to operate as a stand alone entity, it has not been affected by the bankruptcy. For Swedish car makers delivery parts for discontinued cars are provided consumer recommendation that parts are to be produced as long as there are cars who need them and it is viable to produce the parts. Since Saab Parts is a profitable company and there are thousands of Saab cars still in active use, parts should not be an issue for Saab’s cars for a long time.

Several private companies are also supplying parts to Saab’s worldwide. Examples of such are MapTun, Neo Brothers, RBM Performance, State of Nine, Atomic Auto and SAAB USA PARTS.

SWEDEN update #3
The Swedish dealership organization has decided to cover any claims for the vehicle collision warranty “vagnskade garanti” together with the insurance company “IF”.

Consumer regulations in Sweden stipulate that dealerships are forced to cover any warranties towards the customer.
