D-Day?

December 19, 2011 in Editorial

Hi peeps. Swade here.

Tim got in touch and asked if there was anything I could add at SU with regard to the current discussion surrounding Saab and what we face today. Realistically speaking, there isn’t. I’m bound by the rules just like any other employee.

I posted the following at Inside Saab around an hour ago and offered it to Tim as a summary of the situation, as I see it. Right now, Saab’s fate is out of our hands. As supporters and even as employees, we wait, hope, and continue to act as best we can. But the decisions that have to be made are the responsibility of a very small group of people.

We all hope that it works out the way it should. In the meantime, keep the faith, keep calm, carry on, and know that everyone who’s got something to contribute is giving as much as they can.

——

It’s Monday here in Australia as I write this.

Later today, in Sweden, there will be a court hearing to determine whether Saab’s reorganisation should continue. To say there’s a lot hanging in the balance would be the understatement of the year.

Here’s the scenario, as seen from someone on the other side of the world and somewhat out of the loop:

The outcome of that hearing will depend largely on the future plan that Saab has developed to carry the business forward. Details about that plan will no doubt be forthcoming at the time, but all indications are that it will hinge upon setting up the business in a compartmentalised way so as to separate current models built with GM’s intellectual property from future models developed in conjunction with our Chinese partners, Youngman.

The other (perhaps most) crucial element of today’s proceedings will be evidence of support shown by Youngman. The Jerry Maguire phrase “Show Me The Money” feels kind of appropriate here. November wages are already overdue and December wages are due only days from now. Swedish media reports in the last few hours indicate that there may be signs of nerves within Youngman, thanks primarily to statements made by our former parent.

Over the weekend, General Motors re-stated its intention to withhold support for any such deal. From our end, it is contended that GM’s support is not needed as the proposal will not change the ownership structure of Saab. Formal dealings with Youngman will be setup in another entity focused on new model development for the future. I don’t know if it’s the job of a judge in Vänersborg to sort that out, but I guess we’ll find out pretty soon.

I’m not normally one given to poking an angry bear in the ribs, but I’d like to reiterate something I wrote on Inside Saab a while ago – Ford found a way to get a similar deal done for Volvo, and I’m sure they’re keen on protecting their interests in China, too. This deal can, and should, be done. No less a man than Keith Crain, the Editor-in-Chief of Automotive News agrees.

Is today D-Day? All indications point that way right now, but this story has had so many twists and turns that it would be a brave man who attached any level of conviction to his prediction.

This is such a great company. It must survive and I hope that common sense and goodwill prevails today, for the sake of everyone who has an interest in the outcome: Our employees, our suppliers, our dealers and distributors, and of course, our customers.

Not Yet…

December 18, 2011 in News

I’m in constant contact with Victor Muller right now, we’re texting back and forth as much as he has time to spare! I greatly respect that he is taking the time to even look at his phone right now!

I asked him, as I always do about news from other sources: “Is it true?, No more money from YM” (YM meaning Youngman)

The reply: Not yet…

Saab is still fighting! I will stay up all night if I have to and report on things as we are able to find out about them…

Hope to god this is wrong… (and it was!)

December 18, 2011 in News

According to Dagens Industri, quoted by Swedish Televisions news program Rapport, Youngman has decided to not pay any more money due to GM’s decision to stop the new deal, which is needed to pay the wages and extend the reconstruction.

This is now a rumor that is circulating around the Swedish media just now. We have learned that Dagens Industri many times have spread rumors that turned out to be wrong, so lets hope to god that this one is wrong as well…

If it were true, this would mean that we will see a request from Saab to enter voluntary bankruptcy in order to safeguard the payment of wages from the Government supported emergency fund which pays wages up to 170’000 SEK per employee.

Update: As per the headline, they rushed a false rumor to the website.

Last minute negotiations

December 18, 2011 in News

Right now Victor Muller together with Rachel Pang are discussing details regarding the solution which is supposed to provide funding to Saab via Youngman. The details are not yet known but, according to Tv4 the money supporting Saab is to be provided through a newly created daughter company of SWAN.

We are all very nervous about tomorrow as GM has stated that they will not support this latest deal. According to the new administrator Lars Söderqvist to Tv4 the whole issue with GM is about a misunderstanding of how the investments are to be made into Saab.

We also learned that Rachel Pang will not be attending tomorrow’s meeting in Vänersborg since she friday evening became seriously ill, she is reported to have recovered quickly though and is now fully up to date and taking part of the discussions.

I’m not a religious person but even I will say a prayer for Saab, Victor Muller and everyone working in Saab’s best interest tonight…

Perhaps the Phoenix launch, or the 9-4x or something less grand but oh so important? Perhaps an advertisement that you really liked?

Perhaps the Hirsch 9-3 SuperSport article that we published a few days ago? It could be anything at all as long as it has to do with Saab Cars! =)

What do you think was the best thing for Saab in 2011, please let us know!

9-5 (2010-) Flat battery & Heated seats

December 17, 2011 in Technical

For all you 9-5 drivers this is something to remember if your battery should run flat for some reason. Lithium Modern lead–acid batteries which power a lot of the electrics in todays cars have one big drawback, when they run flat they are most often downgraded to a lower max-amp level. They are in such unable to regain full strength. In order to cut back on power-consumption if a battery is not working properly some high-usage items are shed, on of them are the heated seats, this is also referred to in the owners manual.

So if the battery is not able to reach maximum efficiency, some components that uses high levels of power are shed from the system.

Broken springs

December 17, 2011 in Technical

Having the suspension springs break is not an unheard of problem among mechanics, but having these springs break after just a few thousand km’s is… after doing a bit of research on the net about lowering-kits with problems, most of these springs last about 80-90’000 km at best, its not something that is in particular linked to just Saab but seems to be a fairly reoccurring problem.

One lowering kit a good friend of mine recently found out to be a problem with in his car was the one made by H&R and sold by Speedparts. It was installed in the car, a 1999 Saab 9-5 Sedan in 2006 and has been driven only a few thousand km when sounds from the rear suspension started to appear. The springs were broken, not just one but both rear springs in 3 different places. The car has been driven almost exclusively in city environment.

What I also find interesting is that the protective color is almost completely gone. Comparing these with several original used springs with almost twice the amount of km’s from the same region and same age shows that their color is still in place.

No real conclusions can be drawn from this one time incident but searching the forums on the net a bit does show that there are a problem with broken springs with some lowering kits. What the cause is, is still unknown… What is your experience?

The situation for the employees is getting tough

December 17, 2011 in News

With no payment of wages for november and the date 23′rd of december when the december salaries are due is closing in fast a lot of Saab’s employees find them selves in a very tough position financially. the Union IF Metall have arranged so that its members can receive an emergency loan from the bank SwedBank and this now being reported to be used extensively. Prior to the weekend Saab employees were standing in line to apply for the emergency loan. The union “Unionen” have arranged a similar solution for its members.

Darko Davidovic, IF Metall’s head lawyer states it in a simple way, no payment no reconstruction. Saab needs not only to say, they need to prove that the salaries have been paid and are either on or on their way to the employees accounts by monday morning when the hearing at Vänersborg district court is scheduled. Otherwise the unions have to demand that the court discontinues the reconstruction.

All the unions at Saab are united in this issue, they are all going to demand the same thing.

But there are indications to some media that a way for financing the wages has been found and that money comes from Rachel Pang & Youngman.

I will be on location in Vänersborg on monday morning for the hearing, expect both photos, live reporting and video shortly after the hearing is complete (if it is allowed). Until then, I wish everyone a nice weekend!

Why are Youngman so keen on Saab?

December 17, 2011 in Editorial, News

Last week autonewschina.com featured an interesting piece written by their managing editor, Yang Jian. It gives a few insights how Saab is seen from a Chinese view. It also indicates that Youngman’s interest in Saab in not that fresh, they already looked at the brand for quite a while.

Why are the Chinese so keen to acquire Saab?
Yang Jian | 2011/12/16

SHANGHAI — Once again, liquidation looms for Saab Automobile AB as a Swedish court decides whether to end the company’s credit protection.

And once again a Chinese suitor — this time Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Co. — is trying to save the brand.

This week, Youngman wired $5 million (32 million yuan) to pay Saab’s immediate tax expenses. Earlier this year, Pang Da Automobile Trade Co. paid 401 million yuan to buy a fleet of Saab vehicles.

But why are these companies so keen to acquire the deeply troubled Swedish brand? The answer is that Pang Da and Youngman understand the value of a global brand. Read the rest of this entry →

Early Christmas Gift for SU Commenters

December 17, 2011 in SaabsUnited Related

It’s the holiday season, and we’re all a little busy. I have about 60 emails left to get through for work, I have two unfinished in depth articles I need to polish up for SU, and I have a lot of traveling in my 9-3 to do before Christmas next week. Yet I figured out how to do something that has been requested on this site for a long, long time.

I just installed editable comments on the site. Starting about 5 minutes ago, if you have an AJAX capable browser, you now have up to 5 minutes to edit your comment, or request deletion. We may in the future change this, possibly install Disqus (probably not because we’re exploring our options using our current format to expand SU as a true Saab hub). Anyhow, consider this an early present for anyone who has been itching for a way to edit your comments.

Happy Holidays, and I’ll be in touch.

Lofalk’s request to be replaced turned down (for now)

December 16, 2011 in News

The court ruled this morning that Lofalk must remain at least until Monday. They want to give the creditors a chance to have their say in the choice of a new administrator.

Given the short time remaining until Monday’s meeting, the court decided they could not at this point grant Lofalk’s request.

A Different Kind Of Post

December 16, 2011 in Editorial, Off-Topic, SaabsUnited Related, Uncategorized

I really didn’t know what to call this post because it has nothing to do with what’s going on with Saab right now, but it kind of has everything to do with Saab. Maybe Christmas is getting to me and I feel I have to share in a way that is a break from the normal of what we’ve been reading here. In any case, here it goes. Where do you see yourself in this thing called Saab? We call ourselves Saabs United and I would say that for the most part this is very true. Just as with any organization or group, you will from time to time have people that come into you group with the sole purpose to disrupt things and to try to get reactions from others. Since coming to Saab and getting to know people all over the world, there are a couple of things that stand out to me and set Saab apart from any other car company and Saabs United apart from most other sites.

First would be the word “United”, the dictionary describes united as being made into or caused to act as a single entity. Better than that is this one, formed or produced by the uniting of things or persons. Do we always act as a united front? No, but I would have to say that even when we don’t, we are still united by our passion for Saab to survive and our passion for the great cars and people that make Saab, Saab. Even when on occasion I have disagreed with people, it has opened the door for dialog when handled properly.

CLEPA believes in the New Plan

December 15, 2011 in News

Care of our favorite auto journalist, Simon Warburton from Just Auto, Lars Holmqvist, CEO of European supplier body CLEPA, opened up about the recent developments. He estimates up to €700m (US$910m) could be made available for a production restart if the plan we’ve been covering for a few weeks now can be implemented., if plans by Chinese manufacturer Youngman and an unnamed Chinese investor bear fruit.

“That means [they - Youngman] will provide EUR200m and a financial investor will provide EUR500m – that will be enough to restart and give Saab a chance,” said Holmqvist. “Youngman has already spent a lot of money, if nothing else to protect the investment they have already made.”
