Söderqvist Can Become the New Administrator

December 15, 2011 in News

Many of you have already posted it in comments, and here is the news from ttela.se.

After the defection of the new administrator to succeed Lofalk, Saab has made a new proposal: Lars Soderqvist at Hökerberg & Söderqvist.

A little before 16 o’clock left the Saab and Victor Muller into a new draft of the administrator after Guy Lofalk to Vänersborg since Lars-Henrik Andersson dropped out of the mission. In the application, it is clear that Andersen did not drop out because he made a “change in the assessment of the preconditions for a successful reorganization.”

[Andersson]‘s departure is not based on a pessimistic assessment of Saab. It also appears that Lars Soderqvist accepted the assignment.

On Hökerberg & Söderqvist’s website, it appears that Lars Soderqvist “has worked with financial issues since 1985 and specializes in business and civil matters in the financial field.”

Lars Soderqvist deals with insolvency matters as a bankruptcy trustee and administrator. He has handled the largest bankruptcy of all time, the Independent Group, and thus has experience in the management of larger companies.

As posted in comments, our favorite reporter from DI, Afroditi, caught up with Soderqvist on the phone in an interview. According to Soderqvist, he believes that the conditions of the new deal provide for a successful reconstruction.

“I have been informed and also given the opportunity to get confirmation from the parties involved on the preconditions for the plan. The confirmations have been of a nature that I have determined that the conditions for this will be successful, “says Lars Soderqvist. It goes without saying [that the plan will take hard work]. There is very much to handle, but also issues that are less complex.

As we know, the company must maintain proper cash flow during reorganization, and he added, ”I’ve had that kind of confirmation on this to [be the case] financially, yes.” He added that Saab and Youngman will work to strengthen their liquidity for the hearing Monday. He wants to ensure that there is a sufficient plan to deal with the existing debts (salaries, taxes, etc.) before the hearing, adding ”It is essential for my work,” but continued that he received confirmation that there will be more money in the account by Monday.

When asked if he might decide to drop the assignment, he remarked that he will work with what he’s given. ”It was a good question,” he told DI. “I have not played as much insight into why the earlier defections have taken place. All I know is that Guy Lofalk not have read this latest plan… If I judge that there were conditions for reconstruction, then I obviously need to report it. But if I consider that the reconstruction has the potential to succeed, then I have no intention to step down during that time.”

Andersson won’t be adminstrator for Saab

December 15, 2011 in News

The news spread now in the Swedish newswires: the newly appointed administrator Lars-Henrik Andersson called the district court in Vänersborg this morning and said that he is not available for the post. He gave no reason for his decision and we should refrain from reading too much in it.

Obviously Saab has to nominate a new administrator quickly (ttela.se):

To TT Nilsson explains that Saab has until 16 o’clock on how to nominate a new person.

- We will find a new person, we are working on this together with Guy Lofalk now, says Saab’s communications director Eric Geers.

We’ll update you as soon as we get more information.

Press Release: Saab 9-4X Crossover and Saab 9-5 Sedan Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick 2012

December 15, 2011 in News

Trollhättan, Sweden: The Saab 9-4X crossover and the Saab 9-5 Sedan have both earned a ‘Top Safety Pick’ for 2012, the highest rating for crashworthiness awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States for a consecutive year.

“Saab Automobile prides itself on its ability to create vehicles which focus on the safety of the driver and its passengers in real-life situations,” said Per Lenhoff, Head of Safety Development at Saab Automobile. “It is rewarding to be recognized by IIHS for a Top Safety Pick award for two of our newest products.”

Saab’s Real-Life Safety philosophy is based on the fact that no collision is ever the same. Saab safety engineers continuously study how Saab cars behave in real collisions on public roads. The results of these studies are the basis for continued development of both design and safety solutions in cars as well as of Saab’s in-house crash testing methods.

IIHS (www.iihs.org) is a research and communications organization funded by auto insurers in the US. The test procedures include front impact (offset) and side impact crashes. Seat/head restraints are also tested in a simulated rear-end impact to assess the mitigation of whiplash injuries and the roof structure is tested to assess a vehicle rollover crash.

Performance is rated as ’Good’, ’Acceptable’, ’Marginal’ or ’Poor’ in each of the tests and to achieve a ’Top Safety Pick’ award, cars must achieve the highest rating in all four procedures and should also be fitted with ESP®.

Earlier this year, the Saab 9-4X and the Saab 9-5 both earned a Top Safety Pick for 2011.

Saab & Volvo cooperate on new steel technology

December 15, 2011 in Technical

A very interesting report in NyTeknik was published today that describes the kind of cooperation in Swedish industry which is absolutely vital for the future of the country’s industrial development. To read a story like this really made my day! =)

Volvo cars and Saab Automobile are working together on getting an advance against foreign competition.

Both are in the starting point for getting access to an awarded roll-forming technique invented in Borlänge, Sweden which would enable them to build bumpers, door-beams and other steel-profiles faster, better and cheeper plus with a brand new type of flexibility compared to what competitors are able to.

December 15, 2011 in Hirsch

If you come all the way from Taiwan to Central Europe and someone handed you a car like the 9-5 Hirsch Performance where would you go? Of course the Green Hell is the place to experience the abilities of the car. And it looks like they enjoyed it: “Simply put, it’s dynamic performance on the track, makes you forget that it is absolutely up to five meters in a cart, and dynamic performance in the Sports mode, the performance is also hot”. The full story can be found on http://car.cool3c.com.

Here’s the video they shot on the track.

Request for new administrator

December 14, 2011 in News

Saab and Guy Lofalk have this afternoon filed a request to the court requesting a new administrator to replace Guy Lofalk.

In a fax to the court, Lofalk writes:

I have not had the opportunity to evaluate the new financial plan in detail. My view is that the new structure agreed upon between Saab and Youngman is such that it deserves a new administrator to be put in my place.

Lofalk goes on to explain the need for a fresh approach to the question at hand.

Lars-Henrik Andersson is nominated and has agreed to the assignment should the court decide to let the reconstruction continue.

SVD has more on this development (english translation).

The Taiwanese Hirsch Performance experience – Part 1

December 14, 2011 in Hirsch

A few weeks ago three guys from the Taiwanese website car.cool3c.com visited Hirsch in Sankt Gallen. Sniper.Liao took lots of pictures and videos and made an extensive reportage about the company and the 9-5 Hirsch Performance they borrowed for a few days to experience the car on their own.

You can read the full story here – of course is in Chinese but a googletrans gives you at least an impression on how much they liked it. Maybe the most interesting feature in this article is the interview video, which is in English.

While we are waiting…

December 14, 2011 in News

After two very turbulent days it is rather quiet on the news front. Most reporting is on the court hearing on monday we posted about last night, just di.se knows a bit more, according to their sources. For some reason I read that with a lot of cautioness…

Saab CEO Victor Muller’s new plan is almost complete, reports the Dagens Industri, which also reveals that Youngman totally committed to invest 10 billion crowns in Saab for five years. Already on Wednesday or Thursday is expected to pay money to enter.

Additionally they say that it’s now up to dicussions about gurantees Youngman needs to get, most likely in preferred shares. Nothing that has not been speculated on before so I’ll leave it up to you how much trust you want to put in it.

An interesting detail is in an article from sverigesradio.se. They claim that Saab will not ask for the replacement of Lofalk.

Saab chief Victor Muller has several times been openly critical of the administrator Guy Lofalk way to do his work. But Saab’s letter to the district court says no to Saab wants to Lofalk be replaced.
Previously, the request for a change have been discussed, but there has never been any formal request to the right

While I don’t think that Lofalk has been the right man for the job it may be good not to ask for a replacement now. Saab should not overdo it as the main goal is to continue reconstruction. Would be good if Saab and Lofalk could get to some kind of professional peace for the coming months to get this plan done. Fighting Lofalk would only cost energy that is needed in other places right now. So if he moves his mind and does his job let him be.

In the meantime we will keep an eye on developments. And try to bring on some saaby entertainment for you to kill the time until monday, when we will have Tim reporting life from the hearing.

Some cars will be built

December 14, 2011 in SAAB Automobile AB, Technical

The employees in the production plant have been working hard to reconfigure the production line for the new lower phase that it’s scheduled to operate. Normally one station for an operator is 6 meters. There are a number of tasks that are supposed to be done in those 6 meters and of course the faster the line moves, the less is done on each station and the more stations are required.

Just to give you an idea of the work that is behind the line reconfiguration, I will explain the process. Each item performed on the car is time-measured. At each step, every single thing the operator does or the operator touches is clocked. All of these timings are then gathered in a huge database which is in the thousands and thousands of parts and movements that each operator performs. Every single screw mounted into the car is time-measured.

Often one operator performs many movements at each station. Where to place all the parts along the production-line so that the production run as efficiently as possible is Saab’s greatest strength. The ability to use this database to create a smooth operation for the operators so that they don’t stress and are able to build quality but at the same time be efficient is a delicate work which requires lot of brain-power.

To break it down further, lets say that you would like to add a component to the car, like a new type of headlight that has two more connectors than the older version. Basically, the production engineers would need to make a test-case where they introduce a few of these on the production line and measure the time needed to install the head-light into the car and how much extra time it would take for the operator to fit those to connectors to the right cables. The cables might not be located in the ideal place so changes might have to be made to where these are placed into the car further up the production line, and thus new timings on that station as well. But just a few seconds have impact on these timings and each second needs to be accounted for. That’s how much effort is put into this database.

The people at Saab have done this for so many years that the experience they have with adapting the production line for different speeds depending on how the market is going and the requirements for the factory is to put it simply, amazing.

But let’s get back to the headline. We have learned that Saab is more or less finished with adapting the production line for the new production-rate and that they are getting ready to run a test to check if all the prep work runs how they want. During this test, a number of cars will be built, though we still haven’t learned how many. Some of them could be the ones on this very picture below which was sent to us from a friendly source.

And just for fun, here’s an example of the production line in full swing we found on YouTube.

Court will hold oral hearing with Saab

December 13, 2011 in News

Today Saab applied for the court to hold an oral hearing on the reorganization matter. A small extension on the time was asked in order for all delegates to be able to make it to Sweden in time for the hearing. This was granted by the court. Foreign creditors will also be able to attend the hearing.

On Monday, December 19th at 13:00, the district court of Vänersborg will hold an oral hearing with Victor Muller & Rachel Pang. The court has also asked for a brief submission on extending the reorganization beyond the initial three months stipulated by law.

The basic plan to be presented to the court for Saab and Youngman is:
- An outline of the Youngman & Saab deal
- Funding of Saab within and after the reorganization
- the current status of the reorganization

The final and most crucial thing that Saab & Youngman will present is why this new deal will work when the previous ones have failed.

Victor: 3,4 million Euro recieved

December 13, 2011 in News

In an article at ttela.se Victor confirms that the first part of Youngman’s money has arrived and even mentions a sum:

Yes, this is a good sign. Youngman has brought over 3.4 million Euro to us, said Victor Muller to TTELA.

Saab’s CEO, Victor Muller, now confirm to TTELA that money has come in to your account from Youngman. This is a first installment of the funding promised by Youngman.

Of course this is not the full amount mentioned last night, it is not unlikely that those amounts are transferred in more than one transaction. But it is a start and indeed a good sign.

InsideSaab: Payment recieved

December 13, 2011 in News

Our old friend Swade has good news on InsideSaab:

Saab confirms that the first payment of the funding, which was promised by Youngman, now has been transferred to Saab’s account. The efforts to secure the remaining funding, needed to pay salaries and continue the voluntary reorganization, continue and the work is moving progressively forward.
