Major Saab supplier closes down

In a factory in Halmstad on the Swedish west-coast, 230 people have been working for many years with supplying windows to Saab cars. Pilkington in Halmstad closes down due to a large decrease in orders from the bankrupt Saab Automobile AB and Volvo Cars.

Pilkington is owned by the Japanese company Nippon Sheet glass

Saab Automobile AB also used another supplier called St Gobain for its supply of glass-windows for its cars.

    • Sad news. I hope someone still makes windshields for the NG 9-5.

    • Yes it’s sad. I live in Halmstad & just a couple of km from the Pilkington factory. It’s never nice to hear that a large employer Closes down in the city you live.

  2. sad sad. what happens now, when someone needs a new window ? what is the best alternative ?

    • St Gobain still exists but I’ve never liked their products, the front windshield is way to fragile and every little piece of grain that hits it leaves a mark…

      • That was interesting. I have for a long period of time wondered if this was a general problem. I have changed windscreen 4 times in our 2005 9-5 (been ours since new), but if this is true it might be extra sad that Pilkington fade away if their carglass is better.

        • I liked Pilkington very much and my 2010 Saab 9-5 which has 90’000 km’s on it desperately needs a new windshield… of course the one I have in the car from factory is St Gobain… =(

      • Sorry for employees. Pilkinton is also closing down factory in finland. They can supply saab windows from some other factory… Of course i dont know are they doing so,but anyway it not necessary mean that they wont supply anymore if some certain factory is closed down.

  4. Saab Parts North America says there is a new windshield supplier for the NG 9-5. If it is not St Gobain (old supplier) and now not Pilkington, does anyone know who it is?

    • Pilkington still exists. They’re a UK company. Just won’t be supplied by a Swedish factory anymore.

    • For the 9-4X the glass-window supplier was Autotemplex , a Vitro subsidiary
      this SUV was produced in Ramos Arizpe plant by GM, unfortunately the file for bankruptcy stop the production

  5. Not a major problem I guess, though sad for the workers. Both companies are huge (St. Gobain e.g. has 187000 employees) and have a lot of plants around the world where Saab and Volvo will get their glass from.

  6. This is testament to how a lot of businesses are connect. Suppliers need manufacturers and vice versa.

  7. It is sad, but unfortunately it reflects the state of the European car industry in general.

    • It really does seem like a reflection on the European car industry as major manufacturers close up shop and move production. This would be the ripple effect that people didn’t see when they didn’t care about Saab surviving.

      • It is hard to believe that the Swedish government did not consider this “ripple effect”. .

      • Until the last month or two, Saab’s factory was the only European car plant that closed in recent years. There is massive overcapacity, a sluggish market, and utilization rates have fallen below 80%. Every country wants to protect its own – eg France/Peugeot.

  8. I hope the Swedish people hold their government accountable for the SAAB debacle. I am not saying SAAB should have been saved at any cost, but govt policy was decidedly not helpful

  9. Here in the states, my 9-3’s broken windshield was replaced with one manufactured locally by Pittsburgh Glass Works (PGW), which is the new name for Pittsburgh Paint & Glass (PPG). Nice piece of glass – there are other manufacturers out there that will step up to satisfy demand, nothing to worry about other than the unemployment of the local workers, which is always bad.

  10. I’m quite sure on my 9-3’s including my current ’09 all have St. Gomain. I don’t recall any Pilkington glass in an of my 9-3’s. What models did Saab use the Pilkington glass in?

    • Saab used Pilkington a lot 2000-2005 but also in 2008. Both St Gobain and Pilkington were used a bit now and then…

  11. Sad story to hear. I hope those people can find jobs soon. My 2006 9-3 Aero has St Gobain glass however I was out with friends at a bar on a Saturday night last year and vandals took a hammer to several cars parked out on the street. I was surprised to see that they only broke through the top layer of my windshield without going completely through like on the other cars that were hit. My insurance company replaced the St Gobain with a Pilkington. I have the rain sensing wipers so I was glad that they still work the way they should.

  12. All this talk about Pilkington vs St Gobain got me to look at my 04 9-3 ARC. They’re St Gobain. Only problem is the rear window. It seems like there is a poly film covering the whole defroster grid or maybe the whole window. It’s cracking and peeling. It’s like looking through cheap plastic. I can’t think of any cheap way to fix it.
