Saving the last Saab 9-3: Mission Accomplished

This was a project to save the last Saab 9-3 and place it at the Saab Cars Museum.

In the end of May 2011 the last Saab, a 9-3 Griffin was on the production line at the Saab factory in Trollhättan on the day of the bankruptcy was to completed.

SaabsUnited was allowed to reserve this car and the intention was to buy it and place the car at the Saab Cars Museum, where we think it belong.

More than 700 people helped in this mission and in only 9 days the car was saved. Below is a list of everyone that contributed to saving the last Saab.

The details:

One person must remain the legal guardian of the car and take responsibility for it, normally items in museums do not belong to the museum itself but rather to a private person and a contract is written where it is established that the item will remain in the care of the Museum. Even so insurance and registration-fees needs to be billed to a specific person. I am willing to be that guardian and I have discussed the matter of a contract where the car will remain at the Saab Cars Museum for a minimum period of 5 years with the intention of renewing that contract continuously. Normally these contracts are only written for 2 years and then renewed. The contract is made in a matter where nobody will be able to move the car from its current place for any purpose without the approval of the owner which would be me. I am however not able to move the car without the approval of the Saab Cars Museum so in essence it stays exactly where it is.

A question that rose up on our Facebook wall was how people are given credit for contributing to this cause. We came up with the idea of creating a big board which will be placed next to the car and each person who donates money to the project will get their name on that board. Since this is a cause where money is the key factor, we want to use everything we can on this particular cause. Creating certificates which are handed out to each contributor etc costs money and would thus decrease the final amount for this cause. That is not something we prefer. We will list the names of everyone who contributes money, if a person wants to remain anonymous then we will respect that as well.

  1. Donating 50 euros on behalf of Great Western Saabs.

  2. Just did my duty (-; I will be mighty proud if I can the Griffin in the museum (eventhough the donation is just a small part of the amount necessary) I invite other Saabsunited members to do the same. Every amount counts

  3. If we donate from here in the States, will the euros be converted over to dollars? Sorry, I don’t know a lick of Swedish. Will there be a form in English?

    • There is place on the top right corner where you can choose language.

    • I tried it from the US and I automatically came up in English. On the first page you have to put in a value in Euros but after you login to PayPal, it will show you the conversion rate and what you will be charged in dollars at that conversion rate. And there is a link to open a text box to include your name. This will let you specify more than what PayPal account info gets passed to Tim.

PayPal’s April 26 conversion rate is $1=.7366 Euro

  4. 50 euros donated. This car belongs in the Saab Museum.

  5. Thank you for all, it’s great to see the list is growing already. I have sent my contribution as well.

  6. Donated 90 Euros

  7. Donated 300 Euros in order to save the last 9-3

  8. I just made a donation. Likely only enough to buy the lug nuts but every little bit helps. Didn’t see how to include my name to go on the donation list. Perhaps you get it from my Paypal information. Otherwise I’m still proud to be one of the “anonymous” donors.

  9. So far we’ve got about 15% of the required amount, truly amazing for the first day…

  10. Donation made… regardless of what happens, indeed this vehicle belongs in the museum. Not looking forward to seeing the EUR -> USD conversion on my statement, lol.

    I love you Saab!!!

  11. Thank you for doing this—-the opportunity to show some support from all the way here in the U.S. is greatly appreciated. It felt good making a small but heartfelt contribution for this cause!

  12. Donation made too, 50 euros from each Saab I own today. Great idea!

  13. Donation made. Forgot to write my name, but anyways. Hope we can make it!

  14. Just added a small token from Singapore.

  15. I don’t have paypal is there another option?

    • I don’t have a PayPal account either, but you can just pay with a credit card as a “guest” without opening your own account.

    • you don’t have to have a paypal account. when you click the donate button it takes you to a page where you type in the amount you would like to donate and you can either log-in or click “Continue” where it asks the question “Don’t have a paypal account?” and that’s where you pay with a credit or debit card. no excuse not to donate!

      • Its not an excuse realy, you should know i am only a student and i want to donate but just cant find it. i entered the amount of money, and then i get a form were i need to enter details. In this form i get the option to choose either visa, mastercard, american express or discover. none of them which i have. is there a way i can just make an bank transfer, or maybe TimR (if you’re reading) i transfer the money to you’re account and can you make the donation for me?

  16. Little donation made. Hope the car gets his spot in the museum.

  17. Made my donations earlier this day. Next weekend I will visit the museum for the first time.

  18. I have one question. What happens with the donated money if you’re not able to collect enough?

    • As the original article says: “So what happens if we fail, if we do not get the money needed to save this last 9-3? This is an important issue to deal with and we agreed that if that were to happen, we would follow in the good foot-steps of the german blog: saabblog.net and donate the money gathered to the museum regardless.”

  19. Donation made, I hope to see it in the museum when I visit in June.

  20. This is for a great cause and a warm gesture! It’s our chance to show how much we love our brand and our SAABs 93.
These are difficult times for each one of us and for each company out there trying to survive!
I have urged all the Saab enthusiasts in Cyprus to follow our example and donate some money.

Hope we will collect the amount needed in due course. All the best SAAB!

  21. Ok, filled up my PayPal account and made a donation. Will consider doing the same again when we see how go towards the 28.500€ required…
I hope we can get a SU sticker on that 9-3′s white side, or at least in the windows…

…and you wondered why you needed PayPal???

  22. The only bad thing about Paypal is that it does not accept Swedbanks Visa e-card. Anyhow, I’m in.

  23. Donated 100euros. We will have the GRIFFIN! :-)

  24. To walk into the Saabmuseum one day, pointing at the Griffin and being able to say “I own 0,350877192982456 % of that car”. Bliss

  25. 40 euro donation done!!! I couldn’t seem to enter my personal details though… Can I email them to you? I’m proud to be on the list :-)

  26. Just donated my 50 euro. Hoping to visit the Saab Museum some day… never been there before.

  27. I’m in now! Very good initiative! :)

  28. C’est fait ;o)

  29. Something wrong? It has stand at 9295 euro a couple of days now and my name is not in the list.

  30. Just made my contribute to this noble cause.
SAAB will always be a special brand for me

  31. joined in supporting with 50 eu. hope to touch the car at the museum at next visit. :-)

  32. I have not seen any update in the name table above for a few days. Will you do that soon, or is something wrong?

  33. Donated last week with the greatest pleasure,- :). This campaign is really a good initiative!

  34. supporting with 100€. I’m crossing the fingers for the campaign.

  35. My name’s not on the list! :(

    • Olav said on May 2, 2012

Not mine either, but I guess that have something to do with a huge backlog and admin related to this campaign – they are after all doing all this in their sparetime. I rest assure that this will be fixed when time permits :)

  36. Just added 100 EUR to preserve the last 9.3 Griffin

  37. I am all for preserving the SAAB heritage ,but supposing they restart production in the factory again, this may not in fact be the last car off the line.I understand the sentiment and love the cars myself.I own one.But this is a little fatalistic at this point to be resigning to the fact that the last car has rolled out.
Let’s hope I’m right. If June or July roll around and still no resolution has been reached and no buyers are approved by whoever needs to approve them, then I say by all means.Stick it in the museum, right after running it around town until the exhaust is glowing red.Any Volunteers?

    • Hans,

I share your hope to see a restart of production! This car however, to my opinion, is the last Saab from the Saab production line as we knew it. We all know that GM untill now is not willing to share technology with new owners. So whatever happens, this is the last Saab of its sort and to me is a marking point in Saab’s history which belongs in the museum

      • Mark said on May 4, 2012

Supposedly GM “gave’ the current 9-3 to Saab so it could be continued for a while minus the GM engine and perhaps a few other GM bits? But then GM might be Indian givers? No pun intended if Mahindra buys Saab!

  38. Another very, very small donation now added. I wish it could be more but the students and children / working adults ratio in this household is not too good right now! Ask me again next year!!

Anyway, it occured to me that, given how much has been raised already, if just 2000 more Saab fans around the world made a donation of just 10 euros each (the cost of a pizza, or a half pint of beer in Oslo :-) ) it would be enough to buy the car with a nice lump left over to go straight into the museum coffers. Say there are 10 countries with a proper Saab following – that’s only 200 people in each of those countries to make a very small donation, and the job is done!

    Maybe a facebook campaign?
Also try to get dealerships to put out a collection plate?

  40. Done! :-)

I look forward to the day when I go to the museum to see it amongst all the other cars in this important collection.

  41. I have donated 10 pounds would love to do more, all the best to saab :).

  42. Donation made, cant wait to be able to get over there and see the museum.

  43. I am proud to help buy this historical car and will contribute more as we get closer.

Please everyone, everything counts, and there won’t be another chance to become so closely connected to Saab’s heritage. Many thanks to Tim and the SU team for setting this up.

Tim, as many simply live too far to get to the museum, will you make a permanent page for this car on SU with all the spec and the vehicle ID?

  44. Will double my donation. If everybody of the sponsors is doing this, we should reach the goal pretty soon!

  45. Now only 10.000 € left!
    This shuldnt be so hard?

  46. just donated € 50,-. i think we’ll manage to have this car put up in the museum. hope to have a look at it asap.
