Arctic Adventure

While most of us now are longing for a warm summers day, here in Sweden its too cold for me right now =P Till sent us a very nice story! =)

Thursday
Everything seemed to be on scedule when I entered the plane in Munich at 20.00. But as we sat down the pilot informed us that there was heavy snowfall in Stockholm and Arlanda had only one of three runways ready for starts and landing. So we sat there until 22.00 saw us take off. Arrival at Stockholm about Midnight, arrival at hotel bed somewhere north of 2.00. But all of that could not spoil the excitement for what was yet to come.

A call for Suite designers for ICEHOTEL #22

As you know, Saab have been friends with the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi for many years now. Some may remember an Aero X being carved into ice. Well, this advert popped up on my Twitter feed the other day and I thought I’d like to share it with the rest of SU as I know we have some very good designers out there who might like to have a go.

Saab 9-3x used on The Amazing Race

Anyone watch The Amazing Race?

It’s a show where a bunch of couples (be they couples, or siblings, parent/child or just old buddies) go from country to country having to solve a bunch of puzzles and challenges to get through to the next round.

We’ve had one comment and I’ve had one direct email today saying that the latest episode of The Amazing Race featured the Ice Hotel in Kiruna, with contestants driving around in Saab 9-3x’s.

Cue the generic cold Saab photo…..

Apparently you might be able to see the episode online at the CBS website, starting some time in the next 24 hours.

It’s great publicity for Saab, with winter coming in the US and the 9-3x being shown in it’s natural habitat. Great stuff.

Saab Ice Driving

So…..

A few weeks ago I got an email from some tourism company, wanting some photos of Saabs driving on ice. They were going to be promoting the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

I put them in touch with Saab’s PR people so they’d have a shot at getting the best possible photo rather than the few I could direct them to.

This is what they got. I thought it was so excellent that I’d share it here as well.

Pardon the pun, but that’s so cool.

Dippen’s noted a forum member over at the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden who’s visited the Ice Hotel at Jukkasjärvi, where Saab have been hosting the Ice Adventure for a number of years and where they’ve been introducing the press to the Saab 9-3x in the last few weeks.
There’s now a website for what they’re calling The Arctic Adventure and whilst you need a login to access it, there’s a fantastic introductory film that’s worth watching at the start.

The guy from STCS also has an online photo album of the trip, which includes some fantastic photos.

From the film at the start, I think the experience is pretty similar to the one hosted in years past.
Our unofficial Saab Ambassaor to the UK, Robin M, took part in the Ice Experience with his wife a few years ago and sent in an account, which I published on Trollhattan Saab back in 2006 (more great photos there, too).
I’d absolutely love to do this trip one day. I just hope it’s around long enough for me to get the chance.
