After Life Update – New Salem Becomes Albany Saab Shop/Albany Speed Shop

As a sales manager at a Saab dealer in Canada, I have had the pleasure to meet through email some very great examples of dealers and managers in the US that seem to get what Saab is and needs to be. One such man is Darryl Carl and his story is anything but easy. We are working with Darryl from Albany Saab Shop who was formerly a 50 year Saab dealer at New Salem Saab to bring a story of determination and hard work to re create ones self. Many readers of SaabsUnited will remember Darryl Carl as a dealer that tried everything within his power to make things work in his part of the US. We celebrated with him when he his dealership hit the 50 year mark being one of the oldest dealers in America.

Shortly after reaching this milestone though, it was announced that New Salem Saab would be closing their doors forever. We all felt the pain of an owner who felt responsible for his staff and customers alike. New Salem had weathered the storm of the initial GM shut down of Saab and the start up of being an independent company with the ownership of Spyker as well as an economic down turn that plague the US and car dealers alike. I remember seeing post’s on SaabsUnited from Darryl talking about his new car pricing strategy of just over cost and service specials, it seemed like he and his dealership were willing to do whatever they could to get new customers and maintain their service customers. Through all of their struggles, Darryl for the most part stayed positive and never resorted to talking trash about a brand that was dear to his heart.

New Salem Saab Closing

As Darryl Carl has hinted here before, sadly after a half century of being the go-to Saab dealer in the capital region of New York, New Salem Saab will be no more come August 12, 2011.These past few years have been incredibly difficult for Saab dealers, especially the stand alones. One can only hope that the next few months give potential Saab buyers a reason to have confidence in the brand’s future, or this will be the first of many first class dealers who need to shut their doors not for lack of excellent staff or facilities, but because of market conditions.

I just want to say on behalf of the whole SaabsUnited community how sad I am that New Salem is closing. The nearest Saab dealers to Albany are 50 miles away, so I feel for every owner in the city and hope that someone else can open soon in the Capital region. It’s a great city, it’s where I was born, and it’s dead center in Saab country of the Northeast US. If there’s anywhere that should have a Saab dealer, it’s Albany, NY.

I have a couple of massive work days coming up, so things might slow down a little.

Thanks to all who wrote to me with regards to accommodation in Geneva.

We have double good news to report – it looks like both RedJ and I will be going to the show (there was some doubt about being able to get RedJ a pass, but we’ve had some positive news there) and it looks like we’ve both got accommodation sorted as well.

Again, many thanks to the many people who wrote, offering advice and assistance.

How tough is it selling cars in the northern winter?

Saabs might have great winter driving characteristics and be quite appealing in that regard, but people have got to actually get to the dealership to look them over.

This is New Salem Saab this morning.

They keep plowing and the snow keeps falling. As Darryl said to me just now via email – fun for the boys (his twin sons), not so much fun for business.

I hope these poor conditions can lift soon.

GMInside News report that the Cadillac SRX is getting a 3.6 non-turbo to replace the 2.8T. In fact, the 3.6 might replace the 3.0V6 engine as well and be the only lump available.

Saab will be sticking with the 3.0V6 and 2.8T lineup.

Saab always have a great looking stand at any motor show, and now their models will be blinging it up a little more with some Saab themed jewellery:

Saab builds on its brand – with jewelry. Specially-made necklaces and earrings to adorn the staff at the upcoming motor shows.

With the help of designer Helen Berggren, Saab has developed a series of jewelry that will reflect the Trollhättan-producer’s identity.

- Together with Helen, we chose to do a combination jewelry with a Snowstar and cow elk in discrete plexiglass colors, “says Nina Bergheim, project manager at Saab Exhibitions & Events responsible for Saab’s profile on the international auto shows.

And finally, this 9-5 Taxi in Stockholm already has 30,000kms on the clock. Pontus L had a word with the driver:

The car was put in traffic in November and until yesterday the driver has made a little bit over 30,000km!! The car have made all these taxi kilometers without any problems or failures what so ever. The driver is very happy with his car and planning to change to the new 95 SC when it is available later this year.

End of year sale update – New Salem Saab

New Salem Saab are hosting an end of year sale with some ridiculously low prices on 2010 model Saabs. Click here to see the full list of incredibly low prices (and remember that if you’re a paid-up member of the Saab Club North America (and own a Saab) then you could get any of those cars for $1,500 less than those marked down prices!)

The first few days have been tough. It’s a difficult time of year as it is, being between Christmas and New Year.

If you read Darryl’s latest comments on site, then you’ll know he’s had plenty of calls, but foot traffic into the showroom was hampered by some very poor weather.

One of the participating dealers in the campaign, JMK Saab had some huge snow drifts on their lot, up to 7 feet at some stages….

It’s tough going, alright, but they’re going keep on going. In fact, Darryl and one of his colleagues will be opening the showroom on New Years Day to make sure that people have the maximum possible opportunity to call in.

Here’s the stock list again. If you’re in the market for a new Saab then you won’t get a better opportunity than this to pick up a 2010 model at a seriously discounted price. The range and variation in models is huge, so there’s something there for everyone.

TV spot – New Salem Saab’s December sale

I wrote a few days ago about the big end-of-year sale that will be on at New Salem Saab between Christmas and New Years.

Darryl’s got access to around 70 vehicles that will be extremely attractively priced and I’m hoping to bring the list of what’s on offer very soon.

Until then, however….. Darryl’s just sent over a link to the TV spot that’s been put together for the campaign – just another step in watching the whole thing unfold.

Big US Saab sale event between Christmas and New Years

If you’re in the US and you’ve been contemplating getting a new Saab, you might get the opportunity you’ve been waiting for in the week between Christmas and New Years.

A handful of Saab dealers will be participating in this event, all of them making stock available for New Salem Saab in Albany, NY, a long term friend of SU.

I hope to bring you some more details in the next few days, but here’s a sample of what’s going to be available:

2010 9-3 Sports sedan, 4 cyl turbo, 6sp manual trans, no sunroof, black exterior and black leather interior. Sale priced for current Saab owners at $22,750.

There’ll be around 70 or more 2010 models available at these sort of knockdown prices and thanks to Darryl Carl at New Salem Saab we’ll be following the campaign to see how it goes.

The Truth or Dare ads have been prepared, including radio and TV versions, and they’ll be going strong, starting from today.

In essence, we’ve seen this campaign develop right from the get-go with those Truth or Dare ads and next week will be the big test. It’ll be great to watch the process.

This isn’t just an observation exercise, though. It’s a sales event and there are incredibly good cars going at prices that represent amazing value.

As I said at the start, if you’ve been on the fringe of picking up a new Saab for a little while now, you won’t get a better opportunity to bag a big deal than this.

Under $23K for a brand new 9-3 is exceptional value by any measure.

The Saab Fall Festival at New Salem Saab

The following is a letter from Darryl Carl at New Salem Saab, hosts of this year’s first Saab Fall Festival.

Dear Everyone who participated in the Saab Fall Festival,

We here at New Salem Saab and NESA would like to extend a heart felt thank you for your attendance this past Saturday. In addition we couldn’t have done such an event without the folks at the New England Saab Association and Goldwing Saab parts. With 120 Saabs and nearly 200 people, we were delighted in the response for what’s now to be called the 1st annual Saab Fall Festival.

This was completed in 30 days and through social media advertising only! Saab people are truly modern in their means of gathering and sending information.

The day was long and busy from start to finish. The weather held off, thankfully. When I awoke it was drizzling and the weatherman had changed his mind. It was forecasted for sunny and 60, what we got was cool and overcast with some late peaks of sun, but no rain.

I would like to mention a few stories that I picked up. Gary Wolfe from Montana was here for the show. Now this is a page out of the Saab community’s book. Gary was in NYC for some business and had a day to kill while he was there. He learned of the Saab Fall Festival and emailed me and called me to see what could be done to get him from there to here. Gary also posted on Saab United seeking a ride from Manhattan to Albany for the show. Gary was later contacted by a Saaber in NYC who after some discussion kindly drove into Manhattan to pick him up and drove him all the way to the event and back! Gary and I were able to speak some here and I was very happy, as was he, that the Saab community allowed him to attend the event so far from home. Gary I hope you enjoyed yourself while you were here!

Turbo X’s at Saab Fall Festival

The Saab Fall Festival at New Salem Saab went well today. Around 120 cars and 200 people came through on the day.

I’ve got a few photos through already but am waiting for a few more from Darryl at NSS before writing a full entry.

New Salem Saab opening the vault for Saab Fall Festival

New Salem Saab are hosting the Saab Fall Festival at their dealership at 2017 Central Avenue Albany, NY, this weekend.

For all you Facebook types out there, there’s a page for this event on Facebook where you can keep up with the latest happenings in relation to the event.

I just wanted to quickly share some of the stuff Darryl has managed to bring out for this event. It’s going to be a great time for Saab fans to take in some of Saab’s history as well as seeing all the latest gear that Saab has to offer.

How about an original 1967 Saab 96 with only 657 miles on the odometer? You can still see the plastic covers on the seats!

Then there’s this Saab 900 limo….

There will be a bunch of interesting cars there at the show, including one of the original 900 16V prototypes with the pearl white finish – a super rare car that visitors will be fortunate to see.

Peter Maitland from Charles River Saab will also be there with his magnificent Ol Blue Saab 95 and Saabo camper (recently bought back from the GM Heritage Collection).

And those are just a sample. There’ll be plenty more to see, as well.

As well as the cars, there will be decades of Saab memorabilia for people to look over. Given that New Salem Saab is one of the oldest family owned dealerships in the US, the Carl family have access to a lot of historical and interesting items and many of them are going to be on display at the Saab Fall Festival this weekend.

If you’re within driving distance, I hope you get along to the event. I really wish I could be there myself, but there’s always next year for me!

NSS is one of the oldest family-owned dealerships in the US and when you talk about people doing it tough over the last 12-18 months, few have done it tougher than the folks at New Salem Saab. The dedication that it’s taken for them to keep the doors open through the Saab sale will one day be the stuff of legend.

The good news is that they’re still here and to celebrate, New Salem Saab is teaming up with the New England Saab Association and Goldwing Recycled Saab Parts to present the Saab Fall Festival.

The Dyno sessions will vary in cost depending on the car and the age of the owner:

  • $60 for non-Saabs
  • $40 for Saabs
  • $25 for Saabs owned by someone under 20 years of age

There will also be a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun with the chance to smash up a Swedish vehicle from another manufacturer (and no, it’s not a Koenigsegg!). Proceeds from this particular exercise will go towards the Crisman Memorial Scholarship, a regular beneficiary of NESA fundraising and a very worthwhile cause.

If you’re in the area, I really hope you’ll be able to get along and enjoy the day. It’ll be a great way to check out the new Saab 9-5, see New SAlem Saab’s facilities, support the Crisman Memorial and of course, catch up with all your Saab buddies at the same time.
