400+hp 9-3 trackdays

March 12, 2011 in Saabology

In mid February Swade posted about a 9-3 tuned by Maptun performance to 415hp.

Last weekend the car was tested at the trackdays at the Snetterton circuit(GB).

The test went quite well, as the biggest incident took place in Holland, where the driver behind the Maptun 9-3 was too interested in the car and rear ended the car.

The guys from Maptun(white car) where invited by NeoBrothers(yellow-black livery).

You can get more details of the whole story at the new Maptun blog.

Maptun crack 400hp for T8 tuning

February 15, 2011 in Saabology

Here’s one for the hi-po buffs.

Maptun have broken the 400hp barrier on a T8 tuned Saab 9-3 2.0T. The car is actually a 2005 Saab 9-3 but it’s been updated with 2010 panels and lights for the front and rear.

I love the carbonfibre detail work on the front there, too.

Enough about how it looks, though.

From the Maptun website…..

MapTun Performance is proud to claim the performance crown in T8 tuning – The magical 400 hp limit has now been broken.

The test car, a 2005 9-3 Aero equipped with our Quaife gearbox, reached an impressive 415 bhp and 450 nm of torque in our Rototest facility. A lot of time and effort has been spent fine tuning the software to limit the torque to a level that is suitable for the setup.

The car will be driven to England to participate in a trackday on the redesigned Snetterton Cirquit the first weekend of March. There it will face strong competition from Porsches, Ferraris and other supercars. In other words, a great opportunity to put much more expensive cars to shame. You will be able to follow the whole endeavour on the upcoming Maptun Blog.

It’s good to see Maptun planning for a blog to keep people up to date on the their latest products and achievements. But that aside…..

Performance like this doesn’t come easy. The list of engine changes is considerable….

  • Maptun Individual software
  • GT2871R
  • Tubular exhaust manifold
  • 630cc injectors
  • Maptun IC
  • Maptun inlet pipe
  • Ferrita downpipe
  • JT 3″ catback twinpipe
  • Wössner pistons
  • Maptun 450 Nm clutch
  • Quiafe 6-speed gearkit

And that’s before you get to the cosmetic/aero changes. There are still more changes to come, with upgraded brakes and interior being added to the car soon.

Keep an eye out for that track day video. I think it’s going to be a cracker!

Hirsch Performance: Saab USA upgrade availability

January 13, 2011 in Saabology

I have received a list of vehicles for which Hirsch Performance – Saab’s official tuning house – have received the OK to provide vehicle ECU upgrades.

To give you an idea of the process involved……

This list comes from an Executive Order issued by the California Air Resource Board. Each of the vehicle congiurations on this list had to be tested and certified in order to be given the tick by CARB. This is a lengthy and expensive process, especially with this number of vehicles involved.

If your car is on the list, then you should be able to access a Hirsch ECU upgrade (costs for which are as yet unknown) from your local Saab dealer if that dealer is one that’s been approved for Hirsch distribution.

Here’s the list (click).

——

Congratulations to Hirsch for finally making it over the pond an into the US market. It’s been a long time coming, and is a breakthrough that’s well deserved.

Upgrades on the way for my Saab 9-3 Monte Carlo

January 11, 2011 in Troll Stuff

For those of you who are new around here, this is my car…..

Saab 9-3 Monte Carlo

It’s a 1999 Saab 9-3 SE Sport, known as a Monte Carlo here in Australia. We only got 50 of them here, each of them numbered. There are various configurations – 3-door, 5-door, Auto and Manual, all of them with a B204R engine, producing 200hp in manual form. Mine is #9, a 3-door manual.

Since getting the car, I’ve fitted the following:

  • 17-inch wheels from a 9-3SS with Continental SportContact rubber
  • Steering rack clamp and brace
  • Custom made front subframe brace
  • Rear sway bar
  • Carbonfibre dash kit (originally fitted to Viggen here in Oz)
  • Hirsch stainless steel cat-back exhaust
  • Hirsch wastegate actuator
  • Hirsch performance ECU
  • Maptun performance air filter (I have a Speedparts one as well)
  • Saab 9-3 Viggen dampers and springs

I’ve had the car for two years now, which is pretty good for me :-)

I was considering replacing the car some time early this year, but some circumstances have arisen that have made me reconsider. Instead of selling, I’m now upgrading a few bits and pieces.

It became evident shortly after the Hirsch ECU upgrade that my clutch was wearing. I’ve put up with it for a little while now, but I figured that this should be the first upgrade.

Hence, a Viggen clutch has been ordered and should arrive later this week, along with a few other goodies.

Since I’m uprating the clutch, I figured the car could do with a bit more power and some better breathing. Soooooooooo…. I emailed my mates at Maptun to see what they suggested.

Along with the clutch, I’m now looking forward to receiving:

  • Maptun Stage 3 ECU
  • Uprated Forge wastegate actuator (matched to ECU requirements)
  • A big, fat downpipe to complete the exhaust system.

I’m told these upgrades should be good for a theoretical 280hp and around 400Nm of torque.

UPS tracking tells me they’ve left Melbourne, so I’m hoping for a call from my mechanic tomorrow to say they’ve arrived. If so, I reckon I’ll be risking a ticket some time early next week :-)

At the same time as this stuff’s installed, I’m going to get my airbag and stereo controls back, and get Steve the mechanic to look at the front end for an occasional knocking noise.

Sometimes not buying a replacement car can be fun, too.

Images from the Sno Hus – Hirsch Performance in USA

January 11, 2011 in Saabology

UPDATE – Kevin’s article, along with extra imagery, is now online at Autosavant.

——

Kevin Miller from AutoSavant (and also a Saab owner, I might add) is attending the auto show in Detroit. He made his way along to the Saab press event outside the main show.

The big press event there was concerned with Hirsch Performace coming into the US market. It should also be noted, though, that Saab announced a $100,000 donation to the Make-a-Wish Foundation as a result of their recent test-drive promotion, which is a great result (full release at SaabWorld).

Kevin will be writing more about the Hirsch Perfomance announcement over at AutoSavant. Keep an eye on that link.

Until then, he’s given me the OK to show you these images, which he posted to Twitter earlier today. They show the 9-3 and 9-5 on display, with Hirsch modifications. They also give us a glimpse of how the Sno Hus setting was presented (looks good).

First, the 9-5…..

And the 9-3 as well…..

The press release from Detroit:

Saab Cars North America and Hirsch Performance AG Join Forces to Boost Performance of Saab 9-3 and 9-5

DETROIT, Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Saab Cars North America and Hirsch Performance AG of Switzerland announced today that Hirsch Performance aftermarket products will be available for the 2007-11 model year, Saab 9-3 and 2010-11 model year 9-5 cars through select Saab dealers in the US beginning in the spring of 2011.

John Anderson, director of aftermarket sales and new business for Saab Cars North America, said, “Saab has had a long relationship with Hirsch in Europe and now we can offer performance enhancements for Saab customers’ vehicles in the US. The advantage to Hirsch Performance parts is they are installed at authorized Saab dealers, do not affect the warranty or emission system performance of the vehicle and are high quality systems designed especially for Saab cars. Installation of the Hirsch Performance parts within 60 days of sale of the new vehicle will give the consumer the same warranty as a new vehicle, an advantage for our customers.”

Manfred Lenherr, Sales & Marketing Director, Hirsch Performance AG, said, “Hirsch engineers worked hard to put together a performance engine calibration for the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 2.0L and 2.8L engines that provide an additional 30 horsepower for those who desire even more spirited performance from their cars. Hirsch offers a wide range of performance products specific to the 9-3 and 9-5, including wheels, exhaust systems, aero kits and interior appointments to enhance the already pleasurable Saab experience. The other advantage of Hirsch products is they only enhance the vehicle and do not affect sophisticated safety or emission systems.”

Hirsch Performance aftermarket products include engine mapping performance upgrade, +30 hp, performance spring set, dual performance exhaust system, rear deck lid spoiler, carbon fiber aerodynamic ground effects kit (front splitter and diffuser), 4-piece grille set, Aluminum pedals, leather interior set and carbon instrument panel. Some Hirsch components are restricted to specific Saab models.

Pricing information and participating dealers for the Hirsch Performance parts will be available on: http://www.SaabUSA.com and Hirsch-performance.com in the near future.

MapTun – Quaife High Performance gear kit

November 2, 2010 in sponsors

Maptun are total performance Saab nuts who are 100% dedicated to Saab tuning. They’re a company that I’m very proud to have as supporters of Saabs United.

Those of you who are practiced gearheads know that Saabs can be vulnerable in the gearing department when you put the power down. To cater to those who seek higher performance, Maptun have teamed up with Quaife.

I’ll let them explain:

——

Throughout the years, we have tuned a large number of Saabs, some of which have left our shop with extreme levels of power. A recurring question has been how long the gearbox is going to last. That it will not last forever both we and the owner have been well aware of, the only question has been how long. Those times are finally over!

Together with well renowned Quaife in the UK, MapTun Performance have developed a gearkit adapted to the extreme demands of a high performance Saab. The kit has now been tested rigorously for over two years in cars with 485-540 hp and 600-700 (!) Nm.

Neither of the cars have noted any problems whatsoever with the gearbox, despite drivers being instructed to push the cars to the limit in a variety of driving conditions, grip conditions and tire choices. Unlike previous straight cut gearkits from Quaife, this one is adapted to street use and not pure racing applications.

The kit therefore features helical cut gears, which give a much better noise level, and a gearing which actually gives slightly higher top gears. Everyday functionality is thereby preserved.

Gear ratios:

  • 1st 12,21
  • 2nd 7,87
  • 3rd 5,57
  • 4th 4,25
  • 5th 3,39
  • 6th 2,85

The gearkits are manufactured by Quaife. The complete kit including a number of custom fabricated parts, such as bearings and input shaft. The kit also includes the output shaft and crown wheel, so it is a true 6 speed kit rather than a bolt on 6th gear.

The kit is only available from MapTun Performance!

We recommend a complete overhaul of the gearbox while installing the gearkit and that a Limited Slip Differential is installed.

——

The gearkits are available to replace the 5-speed gears in the following vehicles:

  • Saab 900/9-3 94-03,
  • Saab 9000 94-98,
  • Saab 9-5 98-10
  • Saab 9-3 SS
  • Get in touch with Maptun for more information and pricing.

Hirsch upgrade for Saab 9-5 2.0T

October 27, 2010 in News, Saabology

Hirsch Performance – Saab’s officially approved tuning house – have released some details about an upgrade that’s been whispered about for a while now – the 2.0T from the new Saab 9-5.

This engine produces 220hp and 350Nm in its standard guise. Hirsch bump that up by just short of 20% with the usual Saab warranty intact.

The 2.0T is already more fun than a houseful of puppies. This upgrade will make it the most fun you can have in a 5 meter, 5 person car.

    ——

    260hp Performance Upgrade 2.0T ’10 FWD / XWD Automatic

For the second generation Saab 9-5, the reliable 2-litre engine from the Saab 9-3 has been developed further, and equipped with direct injection and a modern twin scroll turbocharger. Perfect conditions for a performance upgrade! With the improved charge cooling with the direct injection, more power and torque than before can be generated; 260hp and 400Nm, and thanks to the twin scroll technology, the throttle response is significantly faster.

    Built for the Autobahn

With the performance upgrade from Hirsch Performance, the maximum power is not only available for short bursts of acceleration, but can be maintained, just like the top speed of 250km/h, for hours at a time. Should it be necessary.

    No compromises

Just like all other Hirsch Performance upgrades, this performance upgrade is compliant with the same emission regulations as the original car. A world first is therefore that just like the original car, the performance upgrade meets the extremely stringent Euro 5 emission requirements. Service intervals remain unchanged. Vehicles upgraded with Hirsch Performance upgrades remain covered by Saab Original Warranty.

    Hirsch Performance Saab 9-5

Hirsch Performance products are only available in certain markets. Check the Hirsch Performance website or Saab in your country for availability.

Autoblog: Hirsch for dealer installed Saab Performance

    June 3, 2010 in News

It’s a cracker of a busy day here, with lots of work to do before I finish up for a while. Hence, I’m a bit slow getting to things at the moment.

I’m not sure if Autoblog had a representative at the Saab 9-5 driving event this week, but they’ve got an unattributed stoy about Saab, Hirsch and dealer-installed performance that makes me think they were there.

There are two parts to this (as with many stories) – the face value part and the undertone.

    The face value part:

…..[Saab] company executives have been in talks with leading European Saab tuner Hirsch Performance AG (with whom it has a longstanding relationship) to develop new dealer-installed performance parts to be offered in North America and other markets.

This isn’t really news. Hirsch have all the performance gear in place and they even had it certified for the US a couple of years ago. They just never got the OK from SaabUSA to actually do it and because Hirsch’s stuff is covered by the original factory warranty, that OK was essential.

So what we have here isn’t a need to develop product, per se, it’s a need to finally pull the trigger and get the product out there. Performance stuff for the Saab 9-3 has been available in other markets for years. The 9-5 gear might take a little longer as they’re having to do that for the global market.

    And now for the undertone…..

When I display some disgust and hatred for GM, some people wonder why. If it’s accurate, this part of the Autoblog story will tell you why:

….the Swedish automaker is seeking to enhance the performance potential of its 9-3 and the new 9-5, but it remains hamstrung by agreements signed with Saab’s previous owners that lay out chapter-and-verse about what power levels its products can offer through 2012. Why? Because “We can’t modify these licensed architectures in such a way that it will compete with General Motors products.” In other words, production-line models with stouter drivetrains have been ruled out for the next couple of years, leaving Saab to pursue other ways to bring more power to the people.

Saab were restrained for years by General Motors and it seems that restraint continues today.

I’m not so mad about the ‘today’ stuff as it’s to be expected. What I get mad about is the years and years of wasted time when GM withheld premium performance and powertrain from Saab whilst giving the absolutely crap Pontiac Solstice a 260hp DI engine. That’s just one typical example.

I get mad about the fact that I persistently asked questions about issues like this of various members of SaabUSA staff over the years and got bullshit answers. I could smell it at the time but what are you supposed to do? Call them liars in the middle of an interview just because of something you suspect?

Please pardon the language, but this stuff really puts steam in my strides. You bang your head against the wall for ages, knowing in your heart that you’re right and it’s only after the culprits have exited stage-left that you finally hear something like this – the truth.

    ——

The good news is that there might be some more access to performance enhancements for those who want it. I shouldn’t let my own feelings overshadow that.

For people to be able to access this sort of thing through their dealer is a win for everyone. OK, it’s not quite as good as getting it from the factory, but it’s better than not getting it at all.

15% off Saab tuning software from Maptun – and free shipping!

    May 27, 2010 in sponsors

    RE-POSTED:

Remember, this offer ends at the end of this month.

And this was noted in comments:

Just got Maptuner from the nice UPS man, ran the program and took it for a rip (15kms). Significant improvement all over. Car just runs better, power delivery is smoother and as many people have said the car just feels better. I look forward to putting some more miles on it…..

….I should also mention I ordered this Sunday night in Canada and got it at 2pm on Wednesday from Sweden.

    Booyeah!!

    ——

Today we have another outstanding offer from our site sponsors (and rally team sponsors) – Maptun.

A few months ago we had a great discount offer on Maptun’s new plug-in Maptuner software. That offer was very popular and I’m pleased to say that we’re doing it again, though with a small difference this time.

Until the end of May, Maptun are offering 15% off all tuning software, along with FREE SHIPPING on your entire order.

    ——

The discount, combined with free shipping, means you’ll have more spare cash to consider a bigger upgrade than just software.

All tuning companies offer staged tuning kits for your Saab. These staged kits build on each other so as to offer a tuning solution that matches your budget. Initial stages typically involve software, exhaust systems and air filters. That’s just the beginning, though. With some companies you can go even further with bigger injectors, a bigger turbo, an uprated intercooler and various other parts making up further steps on the ladder to tuning Nirvana.

What sort of difference can a complete tuning kit make?

    February 1, 2010 in Uncategorized

A little movie I made showing how easy it is to tune a Saab using the new Maptuner plug-in tuning device, from Maptun.
The car belongs to a friend of mine, John, and is a 2006 model Saab 9-3 V6 Aero.

No, they didn’t ask me to make this. I just wanted to see how it worked and it’s bloody impressive.

    Maptuner – the plug-n-play tune-up for Saabs

November 30, 2009 in Saabology, sponsors

When I visited Sweden back in September this year, I visited the guys at Maptun.  They’re sponsors here at Saabs United, and they wanted me to provide a review of their new Maptuner plug-in tuner.
Being early in the Maptuner’s life, there’s not one available for my model of Saab, so I had to find a friend here in Oz with a suitable car.  I tapped a bloke you know around here as PT, from Sydney.  Pete and the family have a 9-3 SportCombi that was just begging for an upgrade.
    Here’s Pete’s upgrade story:

    ——
The Maptuner upgrade to our 93 Linear SportCombi was easy. All we had to do was drop the engine, install a mild cam, bigger injectors and intercooler, rebuild the turbocharger, re-program the ECU and it was done. Simple enough and after all, there’s nothing like a bit of home mechanics to build the bond between man & motor.
But that’s all a fabrication, of course.
The motor didn’t move, the turbo is untouched, and yet every aspect of the engine’s performance seems altered – and all by a small black box and a length of cable that P1000290.JPG upgrades the engine to deliver the potential that Saab’s 2.0 turbo 4 contains. A blindfold test (not a good idea when driving – but you get my drift….) isn’t even necessary; the differences between the pre- and post-upgraded engine are like night and day.
The first giveaway is the sound.  Start the engine after uploading the ECU re-map from the Maptuner device and you start thinking your ears are playing tricks.  Is that a deeper note…. a smooth, tenor vibrato?  Well, more air through the engine means more air through the exhaust and so the note becomes deeper and more purposeful. The tinny note of the 1.8t base spec engine is banished as the engine gets in touch with its inner Aero.  Its no race engine but there is a nicely balanced tone with a hint of turbo whistle.
FYI, our car was a base 1.8t SportCombi with 110kW and 220nm.  The upgrade has given us 164kW and 330Nm – a transformation in every sense.
    P1000282.JPG
Things get even better under driving conditions, prompting me to turn off the stereo and lower the rear windows during a winding test drive down a local B-road.  It’s never going to upset a true 2.8T Aero but its certainly much closer to the spirit of the car. For the first few days I have to stop myself accelerating at every opportunity just to hear the engine.
Its in real world driving where the upgrade differences quickly make themselves known. Torque. Lots of torque.  Torque delivered in effortless motion that delays gearshifts and pulls the car along like an invisible string. This is what gives SAABs their wonderful drivability, the effortless ease through traffic or on the freeway.  Put your foot down with purpose, the exhaust growls and the car just pulls away. No fuss, no slamming gear changes. I’m reminded every day that our humble little Linear now has more grunt than the 2.0 Aero spec engines had only a couple of years ago.
I should add that the 9-3 is my wife’s car and madam was quietly cynical that anything of purpose could be done via a computer cable. First time out with the updated engine she nearly rear-ended someone when the car picked up its skirts and boogied down the road with more purpose than expected. So, driving it has been a pleasant surprise for her too: the ease of acceleration out of intersections, roundabouts or from behind trucks.  Just knowing that the car could get itself out of bother quickly gives confidence and adds a reassuring cabability to what was a handy but slightly under-cooked family car.
It’s not about speeding or dragging off kids at the lights.  It’s about having the capability when it’s needed. To take the other view, if you want to take sensible and socially-responsible behavior to the nth degree, there is always the speed limiter built in to the Maptuner that can be turned on.  That feature alone would be a serious consideration if we had teenagers who were starting to drive.
Although the car came to us in Sport spec with the upgraded chassis, wheels & body, it was always very modest on the road. Now it feels like it has reached its potential and is the car it always should have been, thanks to a few minutes with the clever Maptuner software. To have access to this degree of performance via an upgrade process that is essentially no more complex than syncing your i-Pod is a joy.
    P1000289.JPG
The Maptuner device itself can be used without instructions due to the cues that it gives you (although instructions would be a welcome addition to the pack guys, just to provide some reassurance for the customer) In a nice touch, the contact with Maptun can continue past the initial purchase and updates are available from their website for up-loading to your car throughout its life.
    Downsides?
Hard to think of any of significance. The move to 98 octane fuel perhaps? The Maptuner is based on 98 and so that’s a change from the usually 91 for us but with the extra expense of the better quality fuel comes improved economy as well as the true potential of the re-mapped ECU so it’s a trade that we’re happy to make.
If you were to have a change of heart the Maptuner stores a copy of the original tune first that can be re-installed with the same straightforward plug-n-play process. This might help if you wanted to sell the car unmodified for instance but I can’t imagine another circumstance you’d want to take the step back.
On balance though, theres’ a lot to recommend a Maptune upgrade. Particularly if you have a car like ours that is well suited and really just fulfilling its potential.
9/10 for me. The missing 1/10? Include it (along with kindred spirits Hirsch) under the Saab aftersales/warranty program.
    ——
    Swade here…….
As well as the upgraded tune and speed limiter that Pete’s mentioned, above, the Maptuner also comes with a few other features that I should mention here.

    • Shift up lamp (manual transmission only) – A shift up lamp will appear whenever it is more economical to use a higher gear. It will also appear if you are approaching the rev limiter.
    •

    • Fault code reader – If your Check Engine light is lit, the MapTuner is able to read the fault code and erase it with a few key strokes.
    •

    • Wheel circumference – Different wheels have different circumference. With the MapTuner you can easily calibrate the car so that the speedometer is accurate.

Thanks to Maptun for providing PT with the Maptuner device for the purposes of this test.
