SOTW, We are SAAB edition: A new 9-3X

January 16, 2012 in Sotw

We are Saab

My fellow countryman Sven-Erling sent us an e-mail on Sunday announcing his purchase of a 9-3X TTiD. He took delivery on Saturday. It was time for a convoy. A convoy of one!

Hi!
I just want to share a true saab-experience with the community.

Yesterday I bought myself and my family a new car, for the first time ever. We bought a Saab 9-3x. From the dealer on the west coast of Norway I drove together with my son (4) through the mountains on our way back home. Knowing that there where “We are Saab”-gatherings all over the world at the same time as we drove into the nature added a deeper tone to our tour.

SAAB of the week – Chinese 9-3 with a Dutch twist

November 7, 2011 in Sotw

After our October fest a little over a month ago, we received a report from our friends in China who also arranged a get-together that day.

One of the pictures caught my eye, so I e-mailed KaiC and he generously sent me a bunch more pictures. The owner of this fantastically colored 9-3 lives in Nanjing City, Jiang su Province.

Saab of the Week: Grrrriffin

July 18, 2011 in Sotw

This is the first time a customer 9-3 Griffin hosts as Saab of the Week here at SaabsUnited! This weeks story comes from Joakim Persson, Lövstabruk in Sweden:

The car is 9-3 SportCombi Griffin TTiD4 (180 hp) in Oak Brown that I got as a company car. I picked it up at Svenska Bil in Segeltorp, Stockholm on July 1st. I have driven about 800 km so far and I must say I couldn’t be more pleased with the car.  I actually bought it based solely on the pictures in the press release and a fair bit of hearsay. I hadn’t even driven the TTiD before…

I have always wanted a 9-3SC and now I took the chance when it appeared.

I would like to include a big thanks to Johan Hägglöf at Svenska Bil, who stayed after closing time on a Friday so I could pick up my car after being stuck in a traffic jam through Stockholm the entire afternoon. It took me 2½ hours to move roughly 20 km…

Saab of the Week: Keith’s 9-5 WoofCombi

June 13, 2011 in Sotw

Warning: Certain aspects of this posting may be considered just too dog-darn cute. Consider yourself warned.

Good thing our owners didn't buy a Kia!

I know many of you out there are asking yourself what car to buy for your Great Danes. What car could possibly accommodate not only one, not two, but three? And allow these huge gracious beings to stand up if they so choose?

SAAB of the week – 9-5 Turbo6

May 22, 2011 in Sotw

Radu's two Saabs

Over a month ago, when Saab’s production had been halted for about a week, Radu from Romania sent the crew an e-mail with a hint of buyer’s remorse. He had just purchased a 9-5 Turbo6, his third Saab in 8 years. Had he made a mistake trusting Saab?

I answered him the same thing I tell myself “this car is one I will keep for at least ten years”. I mentioned that the warranty would be covered by the dealer (at least that is the situation here in Sweden) and that parts are not thought to be much of a problem (Saab’s sister company makes a nice healthy profit from selling parts and will continue to do so post-Saab).

My lengthy reply to Radu ended with: My recommendation for you is to jump into your new car, drive it for an hour and see if you can avoid smiling. :)

The e-mails that followed were filled with a great sense of relief and enjoyment. Radu told me that his fiancé will get his 9-3 once his 9-5 is officially on the road (it takes time to get the bureaucracy sorted).

I have even showed it (the e-mail) to my father which is an engineer specializing in aerodynamics (he has a PhD in this field). When I parked my new 9-5 in front of his house he only said: wait a minute … Let me enjoy the view! The curves! The elements that make the vehicle friendly with the air that flows along, the profile that calls for great engineering in terms of shape”! He was amazed! He begun explaining what every item does in terms of airflow ease. Then he walked inside and it was the moment I showed him the e-mail from you. He read it carefully and said: “Normal! I would think the same!”

In the mean time I have had many hours behind the wheel smiling. I am not wiling to extend that many are looking at the new car. But is me feeling greatly inside and very secure that does indeed a lot of work. My idea is not to aim to make trade with the car in the next few years but to keep it to enjoy and perhaps to have my sons taking in onwards. I am also keeping my new 9-3 for my fiance! So thank you for reassuring me on the topic.

Radu is a 36 years old insurance losses independent surveyor (loss adjuster) from Romania with an impeccable taste in fine automobiles. The 9-5 is his third Saab.

SAAB of the week – Saab 9-3 Sport Wagon

April 27, 2011 in Saabology

Hi, during the Easter weekend we received a nice story of a typical profile of an Audi A4 or BMW 3 series buyer in England, at least that’s what he calls himself.

It’s the story of somebody with great taste, if you study his the cars he’s owned.

Among others there was a beauty like this.

SAAB of the week – Zeus up

April 18, 2011 in Sotw

Another Monday and you know what that means: the SOTW

This post requires that you increase you computers volume! ;) (see the youtube at the end)

Here is a copy-paste from Davids e-mail..

Hey guys!

Great work on the site! I’m sure Swade is proud of his successors :)

Are you still keen on presenting cars from the community? Cause I recently bought myself a beautiful 1991 900 Turbo that I’d like to show off!

Just to cover the background, I’m David Blumberg (yes the one with the song :P ) and as Swade already knows, I’ve been going back and forth between my home in Stockholm and Perth, Western Australia. After 1½ years in Sweden I’m now back in Perth (more specifically Mandurah).

New country means new car, and that’s why I found myself a really nice 1991 900 Turbo. It’s the 3-door version (my favourite!) and has just over 175,000 kms on the clock, which is pretty much nothing for this car. Since it’s a 91 model it has the upgraded seats from the 9000 (I’m assuming that’s where they come from?) and it drives just like a Saab should. I bought it of a local enthusiast who has his entire backyard/frontyard and garage full of Saabs, and probably harbours 1/4 of all WA Saabs in there :D

I’ve owned a number of 900s through the years, but never the FPT* and I just can’t get over the rush! Just squeeze the throttle, feel the turbo wind up and off you go! Contrary to most Aussies, I’m not a big fan of either Holden or Ford, especially the ridiculously over-styled, late 90s street racers most teens drive around in. This car is so inconspicuous that only the enthusiast knows what sort of power this beast can unleash. So you can just imagine my joy every time I catch the hoons (Aussie reckless driver) off guard at a red light.

I have a habit of giving my cars ridiculous names and this one is no exception. Considering the relentless raw power of this beast and the fact that I get electrostatic shocks every time I exit the vehicle I’ve named him “Zeus”. So if you ever come across this car in a dark alley, be sure to address him appropriately, otherwise the outcome of your encounter might be ugly :D

If there are more Saabisti around the Perth area, feel free to get in touch. I’m always up for getting to know local enthusiasts :)

I’ve attached a picture for you guys, and thank you for doing such a wonderful job :)

Regards

David

SAAB of the week – Ben

April 11, 2011 in Sotw

We all love a Saab convertible, don’t we? I sure would like one for summer of 2011..!

It’s time once again for SAAB of the week:

Hi, I’m Ben and last year I bough my first Saab, a 1997 900 SE Talladega convertible. It has Saabs 2.0 Turbo engine and the 5 speed manual, Wood grain dash, alloy wheels and leather seats (electric and heated).  Being a 14 year old car there is a list of things that I would like to fix to hopefully restore it to near new condition in the future and have started by replacing the faded badges and decals. I love the details you just done get in many other cars, I can spend hours looking at the little details that make it a Saab, almost as long as I do obsessively cleaning it on the weekends. I love the ignition between the seats and being able to recline the seats back by the press of a button; and then there’s the roof that transforms it into a everyday car, into a weekend sports car. After 6 months of ownership I have no regrets and look forward to many more years of open top driving.

I wish you good luck with restoring your convertible :)

Saab of the Week – True Love

April 5, 2011 in Sotw, Uncategorized

It’s time for this week’s SOTW, which comes from Tomas:

Lets get straight to the point, I had no reason at all to abandon my conviction that Volvo was the only car-brand for me for the rest of my life. This was my strong belief from an early age of 17 until about six years ago. Having owned several different Volvo cars a story developed which turned into a new love story.

During all of my life as a grown man I have worked with sales, mainly electronics since I love heavy Hi-Fi, but everything must come to an end. So I tried out what it was like to sell cars. Done deal, I applied for a job but had to settle for my second best option, selling SAAB and Opel at the local dealership. As a new untried salesman I had to focus on used cars with varying success. I’m probably a bit too honest and have too much of a conscience to become a great salesman, so I stopped working there. However during this time in 1997 I discovered SAAB and despite being very happy with my Volvo V70 T5, I could not resist the temptation of making a good deal. I got a pretty good trade in price as well as a very good price on a 2,5 year old 9-3 Linear SportPlus from 2004 at ANA in Trollhättan. Finding the combination of right year-model together with the right amount of km’s and equipment was a pleasant task for me and this is what I found. Engine 2,0t 175 Hp, Manual gearbox, Xenon lights, Rain-Sensor, Electrically adjustable drivers seat, removable tail-hook, 17 inch wheels and the color is EspressoBlack Metallic.

I would also like to tune the car in the future and buy fog-lights as well as tune up the chassi a bit. The the car will become great!

I’m very happy with my choice of car even though I have found a few faults such as bad suspension and some minor things with the electrics which doesn’t make it feel as state of the art. I’m very happy with the road qualities of the car and this car has turned into something I truly love.

-Tomas TL1000R

SAAB of the week – Ziggy and Benta

March 28, 2011 in Sotw

Ah, monday– a new week! It’s time for Saab of the Week.
This time we head over to sunny Santa Barbara, CA.

Dear SU family,

I fell in love with SAAB back in 1991 with the purchase of my first Saab, a 1978 99 Turbo. Since than I have owned more than 7 SAABS including the venerable 1997 SAAB 9000 Aero.

Fast forward to 2008. My wife and I plan on updating our motoring fleet. Of course our taste is very similar. I want a 9-5 in silver and so does she. We end up driving home two gorgeous CPO 9-5′s, one being an Aero (2006 Sport) and the other with a 5 speed. Our Saab children are affectionately known as Ziggy and Benta. My wife Nicola and I hail from Santa Barbara, CA. Keep up the good work SU!

All the Best,

Seb

March 15, 2011 in Saabology

The first Saab of the Week of the next SaabsUnited comes from Hollywood, Florida, where Steve has just taken delivery of a brand new 9-5 in beautiful Oak Metallic. The car has a lot of extras in it including built-in navigation, sunroof, tech package and enhanced Harmon-Kardon Stereo. The engine is a Turbo4 and Steve is so impressed with his new car, that words do not suffice =)

He describes the car as a “tour de force in modern automotive technology”.

Steve intends to be pouring over the owners manual for the next few days finding out how everything works =)

Steve’s 9-5 is standing next to his wife’s 2009 9-3 SportsCombi in the drive way.

We at SaabsUnited want to congratulate Steve and his wife to two amazing looking cars =)

Every monday we will feature a readers Saab here on SaabsUnited.com, so please keep sending us photos and stories of your cars to saabsunitedcrew@gmail.com and mark the subject line with SAAB of the Week

Tuesday Night Snippets

February 16, 2011 in Saabology

Another piece of small market sales data…..

I’ve just heard there were 11 Saabs sold in Singapore in January 2011. Small numbers, sure, but considering they only sold 13 all year in 2010, it’s a very encouraging start.

The Saab 9-5 was launched in Singapore on January 5 (and check out the interior panel!)

——

RedJ has made contact and is working on a story about this….. which should be quite interesting

——

Speaking of engineering, TTELA report that Saab’s engineering reorganisation continues. This was first reported via press release last month.

According to TTELA, around two thirds of the 200 employees have been re-deployed to other areas within Saab. There are negotiations with employees for supported severance packages, which are mainly being taken up by those closer to retirement age.

——

It was nice to see the Playsam Saab model included in a WSJ toys article over the weekend…..

——

A red Saab 9-3x – otherwise known as my current dreamSaab.

Owned by Stefan, who’s loving the XWD system in the Swedish winter.

Saab O The Week – Turbo X

February 9, 2011 in Saabology

I don’t do Saab O The Week entries much anymore, but when I saw this image on Flickr today, I just had to share it.

Eggs n Grits likes to post the occasional ‘Saab moment of Zen’ on his Twitter account. I’d like to take a leaf from Eggs’ book and offer this as your Saab moment of Zen for today.

The Turbo X really is getting better and better with age. I know there was some fuss back in 2008, with feelings that it wasn’t extreme enough on the road. But having a look back at it now, it really does look the goods and anyone I know who’s owned one has been over the moon with the driving experience.

I think I just put a Turbo X on my bucket list.
