The future for Saabs United

Hi all,

I guess you can say that this is an important post in the life of this website.

It’s my extreme pleasure to let you all know that today I agreed to sell Saabs United to a friend, and someone I am quite confident will run the website in the manner and tradition in which it was established.

The new owner’s name is TimR and we will transition the site to his ownership over the next few weeks.

I guess it’s important to talk a little about Tim’s vision for the future of the site. He will be able to outline it in more detail at a later time, but we’ve talked a lot today in Trollhattan about how it can run and I think his plans for the site are very good plans. I wouldn’t have handed it over to him if I didn’t believe in what he wants to do.

Tim plans to assemble a team of writers, many of whom will be familiar names to regular readers here. I believe that RedJ will stay on board as a regular contributor, which I think is absolutely fantastic. The man I’ve dubbed the unofficial ambassador for Saab in the UK, Robin M, will also come on board. Another team member will be a guy known here as Tompa.

Tim himself, is someone I’ve known since 2007. He has deep roots at Saab and is very knowledgable about the company and the product and has contributed to a number articles at Trollhattan Saab and Saabs United over the last few years.

There will also be other occasional authors and contributors from time to time.

I have agreed to pass on the mantle to Tim for one reason and one reason only – trust. I trust him to support the company as I would. I trust him to maintain a high degree of integrity for the site, and to continue to provide high quality content and the maintenance of a high standard Saab community. This is a guy who has a significant emotional investment in the Saab name and I know that he loves the company.

I was absolutely rapt when indicated an interest in the site and in talking with him more about it today, the plans for a variety of content to be introduced, my faith in the future of SU as a vibrant Saab community is very strong.

——

Some of you may wonder what I’ll be doing.

Well, I’ll still be around. If you’ve read TTELA over the last few days, you’ll know that I will still be in contact with Saab and doing a little work here and there. Those assignments are something you’ll hear more about later.

The good news is that Tim is happy for me to stay in touch here on SU, too, and continue to play a minor role as a contributor and of course, as part of the community.

I mentioned in my post The Times They Are a-Changing a few weeks ago that my load was too much: My day-job, family, and Saabs United. Something had to change.

Well, this is the start of that change and a chance for me to re-claim a significant part of my life.

Thanks for your support, which I hope you’ll extend to Tim and the SU team in the coming weeks, months and years.

Dear Steven, Thank you very much for informing, educating and entertaining us since 2005. It has been a real pleasure made more so by the letters, competitions and convoys. Your ability to communicate and hence bring people together around common interests irrespective of culture and geography is a very rare and gifted talent. On an individual level you have also proven that one person can, with simple tools make significant, worldwide lasting change for the better. It is this that should serve as an inspiration to all of us. And to the rest of the Wade family; a very big… Read more »

Words cannot……..but I’ll try anyway. Since 2007 I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and comments practically every day. Not only did you provide entertaining and reliable information, but you also managed to keep SU a civil place where people treat each other with respect. I always and this last year in particular wondered where you found the time and energy to stay involved 24/7. The sad answer, as I gather from your comments, is by sacrificing most of your life. Congratulations with your decision to recoup your life and I hope you will fully enjoy your well deserved ‘retirement’. We will… Read more »

As a sidenote: Anna and I met up with Swade in THN shortly after his meeting with TimR. TimR was also at hand at that point. …And I was standing there, fully loaded with a pro camera (I had even brought my tripod), chatting with my fellow Saab brethren… It took me two hours or so, after we had all departed the scene, before I realised: “Damn… I should have snapped a photo of them!”. TimR and Swade together on what I suspect is a historic day. I am not very good at shooting people, I’m more of a safari… Read more »

I’m glad the site is being continued by some of the regulars, and I look forward to their contributions. Sounds like the best decision that could’ve been made. Take it easy for awhile, you deserve it… Enjoy. And I’m sure you’re proud of what you built here (and with TS). Thank you.

SU up!

Thanks for everything and I wish you all the best. I sure you have left us in very capable hands and I look forward to continuing to be part of the great community that you’ve been the guiding hand of.

I hope that we somehow get to cross paths somewhere in person.

Thanks Swade for all your incredible work over the years, especially during 2010.
Thanks to you and all on this site my Saab ownership felt truly special, being part of great community. The concentrated reporting on anything and everything Saab made me start and end my at SU and THS. That habit will continue.
Good Luck och Lycka Till!…there is life outside SU, at least that is what my wife tells me…

Again Swade, thank you! You and this site are two of my most prominent reasons for being a Saab fan.

I (and many others) will be highly disappointed if you do not open up the PayPal once more before you leave. You deserve a grand parting gift!

Hope to see you around here still,

Swade,

Another very big “Thank You” here too. I’ve very much enjoyed TS and SU under your stewardship. Thank you also for accepting my occasional contribution of pictures and write-ups.

I am happy there has been a resolution that looks like a win-win for everyone. I remember you’ve struggled with the loads of life, work, and blogging ever since you attended the Detroit autoshow a couple years back. It’s great SU will be managed by team of good players for the Saab brand.

Take care and looking forward to seeing this site thrive,

Brian M.

Swade, I always asked how the hell you did this with a full time job and a family? I’ve been checking out your site for a little over a year .. Believe it or not you kept me with the brand we call SAAB Even though I didn’t agree with your ideas sometimes, to say you did a fantastic job with this site would be an understatement. Good luck and all the best with whatever the future holds for you.

While sad that SU will not be yours any longer, I am thrilled that it will keep on going and that you will still be a part of it. I will say that the Geneva coverage has been top notch and much appreciated! Overall, the writing has been very uniform, so much so that I had to scroll up to see who the author was.
Take Care!

Thanks for everything again Swade. It’s quite amazing, the role that you came to play, and in the same way, it’s also good that you now get to reclaim and rebuild the rest of your life. Phoenix – rebirth – indeed. I look forward to reading you, whenever you will write something. All the very best, S.

What can I say?
The scale of bloggin’ exellence goes from 0 to 1 Swade (Swade is the unit). Nobody will actually reach 1 Swade (exept Swade himself ofcourse). The good thing here is that Red J is at about 0.95 Swade which makes him one of the best bloggers in the world. The other guys at the SU team are also high on the scale, so we are very fortunate in the Saab community, BUT there can be only be one Swade…

Best luck with whatever you will do in the future King Swade!

Thanks Swade, I appreciate all the hard work…This is the only site that I absolutely must read each and every day…going back to early in the Trollhattan days.We don’t have a ton of dealer support here in Indiana so its great to have a thriving online Saab community to call home.

Thanks again for shepherding us through these last few tumultuous years, and good luck with future endeavors.

It’s difficult to estimate the effect you and SU have had on Saab and the survival of the company, but I’m pretty sure it’s a substantial one.

I hope your dream of a red 93x Ttid will become reality really soon!

Steve… Thank you for everything: for the lively conversation at last year’s Swedish Car Day in Boston, for the one lengthy phone call we had (it must have been the middle of the night in Tasmania!), for the wonderful emails we’ve exchanged, for featuring me and my on-going interest in Saab advertising on SU and for inviting me to be one of the judges of your unofficial ad competition. Most of all, of course, thank you for making SU a “must-read” for anyone who cares about Saab. To TimR… well, Tim, you’ve got some mighty big shoes to fill, but… Read more »

Good luck and a very big thank you Steven!!

I first came here in 2009, just after buying my convertible and found the community you built here tremendous support. Your handling of the tough times last year was amazing and your reports kept the Saab spirit alive and drove the massive support convoys and for that you will be forever remembered in the Saab world!

I wish you all the best with your next venture and good luck to Tim who has big boots to fill indeed!

It’s hard not to sound too sentimental, but it’s really been great. You have always kept the site classy, which not a lot of people bother to do these days. This site makes it clear that it’s not only about the cars, it’s as much about the community – which makes the comments a lot of fun to read (sometimes they’ve been really insightful too). I hope this will continue under Tim’s stewardship, whom I hope will take the time to present himself a bit further down the road.

Many thanks
