GM approved Antonov a long time ago — Swedish government caught unaware

First a tip of the hat to our friends over at SAABLOG-In who covered the recent statements made by the representative of one of the largest unions among Saab’s workers.

According to various sources knowledgeable, there is no doubt about the approval by GM of Vladimir Antonov. We demand so aggressively that the government and GM put pressure on the EIB to allow Mr Antonov able to return to the capital of Saab.

— Mr Stefan Löfven, Chairman of IF Metall

Meanwhile, the prime minister claims that it is left up to NDO to approve Antonov. A statement which is not met with favorable words from Carlström, the Swedish spokesperson for Antonov.

NDO approved Antonov eight weeks ago

— Lars Carlström

TTela reports the prime minister will turn against anyone who wants to short-circuit the approval process of Antonov.

Personally I would like to see the PM fight as hard to keep jobs. I have never before seen a politician so keen to look a gift horse in the mouth (or other orifices of the body). In my opinion, the government should reimburse Saab for the costs of this delay. If they want to stay out of running an automobile manufacturer as they say, then they should not meddle in the ownership question in the first place.

Don`t they have question time in the parlaiment where the opposition can question this absolutely idiotic situation and demand an inquiry? This must be incredible news.

I don’t think either GM or BMW needs another brand in segment where they already have models, especially BMW (after all Saab is sort of direct competitor with 3-series and 5-series). I feel more like PSA needs a brand like Saab and thus extend their portfolio and marketshare in USA (I don’t think there are Peugeot or Citroen in USA now). PSA have wonderful diesel engines (probably the best) what they need is a good platform and Saab can provide such. Also PSA and BMW are sharing 1.6 Petrol Engine, the same one that Saab and BMW agreed about a… Read more »

PSA/Citroen used to be Europe’s largest automaker when they took over Chrysler Europe (Simca/Rootes) and since then they have fallen to permanent number 2, battling the problem of having two (initially three) brands spread accross the same segments. Now they seem to be trying to cautiously sort out the Citroen-Peugeot relationship, but the key is cautiously. They might be the most conservatively-managed automaker in the world. Conclusion: neither would I want Saab to be become entangled with PSA, nor do I think Saab-Volvo would work. Saab would best remain a “free agent”, cherry-picking the best relationships they can with various… Read more »

Mazda actually has a history with Saab. They nearly married in the 80:s. There were Saabs running about with four wheel drive and four wheel steering from Mazda and there were Mazda 929:s with Saabs 2.3 litre turbo.
See “Spelet om Saab” by Jan Hökerberg. I don’t know if it is available in english, though.

“I think General Motors or BMW should buy …”
At least we know what you bought, think you’ve mentioned that some times now.
(Btw, didn’t you think BMW was just a common brand, perhaps even a bit bland, insipid?)

Antonov must first buy GM´s stock for 8-900 million SEK. GM will not be an owner in the same company as Antonov. That´s GM´s condition according to Dagens Industry today.

I actually believe Antonov is in the deal to get the shares on cheap and sell them to the Chinese for more.

Corrected english seems to be in place… Översättning från svenska till engelska Hi Fredrik, Let me begin by saying that I voted for you and the Conservatives in both 2006 and 2010, because I have had the perception that your policy provides the most employment opportunities for Swedish people and the best position for us entrepreneurs to run businesses. Recently, with the various statements made by yourself and the Minister of Enterprise and Energy Maud Olofsson and Minister for Finance Anders Borg, makes me seriously wonder how you could say that you are running business promotion politics, while talking down… Read more »
