Sweet Home Saab, Back in ‘bama

File this news under the glass half full column. While some Saab dealers are sadly closing their doors during these hard times, others are realizing there’s opportunity and that the brand still carries with it a premium image.

This story comes to us from Dale H, a former Saab driver (who clearly seems to be interested in trading his BMW in for a new 9-3 Convertible soon) in Alabama. Said Dale in his email,

Back in 2009 the only Saab dealer in Alabama closed its doors, just on the verge of my purchase of a red 9-3 convertible.  My wife insisted that Atlanta was too far to travel—the nearest true Saab dealer, so I settled for a BMW.   I was not please with the purchase and relinquished the car in under a year.  In today’s Birmingham News on page 1E the following is printed below a photo of a 2012 Saab 9-4X:

Truly great news in a sea of mess, and great to see Jim Burke Automotive taking advantage of the potential of the Saab brand. Alabama’s roads are suddenly going to become much cooler. Read the artcile after the break.

Jim Burke Automotive in downtown Birmingham is bringing back the Saab franchise to the Birmingham area.

Saab will join current Jim Burke franchises, which include Nissan, Hyundai, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, RAM, Subaru and Jaguar.

“We had a Saab franchise previously and it was terminated because of the GM bankruptcy, not because of the Saab brand,” said Mark Livings, CEO of Jim Burke Automotive.  “The product is outstanding and the customer loyalty is even better.  Now that Saab has separate ownership, we are excited about what the future could bring.

“We understand that there are some difficulties currently with the franchise, but we are confident that these challenges will be overcome in the short term, and Saab will once again be a prominent viable brand.”

Plans for building renovations and information can be obtained by call Jim Burke Saab at 205-324-3371 or by visiting www.JimBurkeSaab.com.

It’s nice to see Saabs being sold in Alabama again. I never imagined that anyone would open a new Saab dealer in today’s economic mess. I hope that Jim Burke Saab sells well and that they become a very successful Saab store. Hopefully, Saab will be able to get them some cars very soon.

On a very positive note, the newest issue of AUTOWEEK (September 5, 2011) has a VERY POSITIVE article on the STATE OF SAAB / UNLIKELY STORY COULD HAVE A HAPPY ENDING on page 9, preceded by a Movers & Shakers profile of Jason Castrioto on page 8…

I have scanned the articles, but cannot figure out how to attach them…

I really appreciate every Saab dealer who in those tough times stands to Saab, but these guys are really special!
While others give up our brand, they START with it. Every available thumb UP!!!

Awesome. I really hope they will receive a massive reward, in the form of car orders, during the next years 🙂

A new Saab dealer, NOW?! I really hope that they will succed! 😀

My first new SAAB (’94 900SE Turbo) came from Jim Burke SAAB and was delivered to my local dealership in NOLA. It was among the first new 900SE Turbos to arrive in AL and sold in LA at the time. 🙂
