SAAB Celebrates 75 Years

Because it is a part of our history, it is only fitting to share this video. 2012 marks 75 years for Saab and is filled with history and Saab cars has a special place in that history. As much as the Saab the defense company has been driven to protect the people of Sweden and national security, so too has Saab cars mission always been to protect the people who drive those cars.

Watch the video below and read the statement below to fully understand where we were when Saab was founded.

In 2012 Saab celebrates its 75th birthday. In 1937, it was clear that Europe was on the brink of a major conflict. In Sweden, neutral and at peace for more than a century, government and industry decided to prepare for the worst. Saab was founded with the mission to secure the nation’s supply of military aircraft as part of our drive to maintain our national security and sovereignty.

  1. Wow, I forgot about SAAB the original Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget’s start date was 1937:

    (Wikipedia)
“Saab AB, “Svenska Aeroplan AB (aktiebolaget)” (Swedish for “Swedish Aeroplane Limited”), a Swedish aerospace and defence company, had been created in 1937 in Linköping. The company had been established in 1937 for the express purpose of building aircraft for the Swedish Air Force to protect the country’s neutrality as Europe moved closer to war. As the war drew towards a close and the market for fighter planes evaporated, the company began looking for new markets in which to diversify. An automobile design project was started in 1945 with the internal name X9248.[11][12] The design project became formally known as Project 92; the 92 being next in production sequence after the Saab 91, a single engine trainer aircraft.[13] In 1948, a company site in Trollhättan was converted to allow automobile assembly and the project moved there, along with the car manufacturing headquarters, which has remained there since. The company made four prototypes named Ursaab or “original Saab”, numbered 92001 through to 92004, before designing the production model, the Saab 92, in 1949″

Since there was so much emotions (good and bad) when SAAB’s automotive 60th celebration occurred in 2009 during the recession and pending bankruptcy & sale.

    May SAAB live forever 😀

  2. Jason; I want to thank you for putting SU on your back by posting by such positive stories as the 75th anv. story. History is interesting, especially for us old timers, but it is history in the end. Let us hope NEVS delivers, and that we deliver for NEVS when that time comes. Dreamers are far more important than doubters. Keep spinning away!
