SAAB Of The Week

This weeks SAAB Of The Week comes to us from Rudy who had his 9-3 combi in the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, Finland. This area is pretty cool as it has in midsummer, nightless nights where the sun shines day and night and is close to the Santa Claus Village. Rovaniemi according to the website is the official home of Santa Claus. There’s something to share with the little ones. Rudy, thank you for sharing your SAAB with us and thank you for introducing me to this wonderful part of the world. As always, please keep your photos coming to [email protected].

That scenery reminds me of the forests in Northern Michigan. You drive up there , make sure you have a reliable car and you can drive for miles without passing another vehicle. I imagine it’s similar especially in the dead of winter with snow on the ground. That would be a nice trip. But remember, not for the faint-hearted.

Just finished re-reading my copy of John Gardner’s James Bond novel, ICEBREAKER, in which his “Silver Beast” Saab and the Saab Winter Driving Course, which at the time, according to the book, was held at the Ounasvaara Polar Hotel (now the Lapland Hotel Sky Ounasvaara) in Rovaniemi, are mentioned prominently. The famed Erik Carlsson is mentioned, in the book, as Bond’s instructor. And Mr. Gardner thanks Mr. Carlsson in the acknowledgment page. Good to see a Saab treading with Bond dared to go again!
