Follow Up: A very special day at Castle Coombe.

Some of you may recall a post I put up a few weeks ago entitled “Lets all try to make this a very special day for one true SAAB enthusiast.” https://www.saabsunited.com/?s=Castle+Coombe

Well the day of the event came with six of our Dragon Saab members driving in convoy from Wales to the venue at Castle Coombe. We arrived early morning with great anticipation about how many Saab’s would turn up on the day. The morning saw a steady flow of cars arriving from all over the UK until it’s climax where we had a fantastic display comprising of 51 SAABS!!!

During the morning the sole person this gathering was organised for, Mark, arrived and was totally overwhelmed by the incredible turnout. The weather during the week leading up to the event had been truly awful with continuous rain, even through the night prior to the big day. But even that worked out well for us with sunshine and a few clouds but other than that a completely dry day.

Despite this  being a previously arranged track day at Castle Coombe organised by the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club, when the organisers heard of our story and what we were trying to do they accommodated us extremely well by not just giving us a fantastic display area for all our cars but even finding time to halt the days’ track events and allowing us to have a SAAB parade around the track for our dear friend Mark Ovens aka Parish for whom the whole day was dedicated. Mark rode up front with David Dallimore in his concours 99 Turbo 2 door. Expecting to maybe being allowed two laps of the circuit we were given time to have FIVE full laps! At one point with each car being spaced out we had the spectacle of the entire track from start line to finish being occupied by the amazing sight of nothing but SAABS!!!!!

During my many years working at SAAB dealerships I had acquired two bottles of champagne specially bottled for SAAB to commemorate both the launch of the second generation 900 and also a Lauren Perrier bottle marking 50 years of SAAB in the UK. These had been hidden away at home since the nineties while I often wondered what to do with them. This day seemed to be the perfect opportunity to make good use of them. I gave one to Mark and his wife to take home and decided to try a raffle for the Lauren Perrier. I thought if we could raise somewhere nearing £50 I would be delighted with all proceeds going to the Forever Friends Appeal. We decided to not put a price on the ticket but instead for people to buy one for whatever they felt they could manage. From the sale of the very first ticket we knew the success of this raffle was going to far exceed £50. The generosity of our gathered friends raised a staggering £241!!! All of which went to Mark and Karen to donate to the Forever Friends Appeal, the hospice who are providing cancer care for Mark.

Parish at Castle Coombe

The winner of the raffle, our great friend and well known Dr Oz Reid has since decided to once again raffle that bottle of champagne at the forthcoming Neo Bros open day, again, with all proceeds going to the same appeal. I think that gesture alone sums up what a wonderful spirit of camaraderie still exists within our family.

To summarise, the entire day went perfectly, one could sense the feeling of warmth and sensitivity surrounding it. I can tell you that Mark and Karen were staggered by the turnout and Karen told me that thankfully Mark just happened to have one of his better days and so was able to see the entire day out to the end.

On behalf of Mark & Karen, I would like to say a huge thank you to the organisers at Castle Coombe and all who turned up on the day with their many beautiful SAABS. A great and very memorable day was had by all. Our continued best wishes go out to Mark, Karen and their family.

Saab CabrioChallenge 2014

From our friend Mioh we got a little report and a nice picture from CabrioChallenge 2014.
As always when I read and hear about the CabrioChallenge I’m thinking “damn, NEXT year I’m going to join them…”. This year wasn’t a exception, and I guess I’m saying the same next year 😉
Thanks Mioh for sharing!

This years CabrioChallenge took place in a glorious sunshine, on the west coast of Sweden, on Saturday August 16th. CabrioChallenge is a annually event since 2008, and this year it attracted a large number of happy and pleasant Saab enthusiasts from Sweden and Norway.

The meeting jumped the gun a litle easy Friday night in Håverud with a dinner for those who were at location the evening before the start.

On Saturday morning we were all gathered at the aqueduct in Håverud. After the welcome greeting, a light breakfast and distribution of the roadbook the topless Saabs was heading westbound, to the coast. On the roads though Dalsland we were passing churches, lakes, some mooses, petroglyphs and two very short rain showers.
cabriochallenge004_2014_02Note: In the right speed it’s no problem to ride topless in even heavy rain. However, a problem can occur when you have to slow down because speed limits or traffic in front of you…

In Grebbestad we saw the sea for the first time during this meeting, and then we followed the coast southbound. On some beautiful roads on the mainland next to the coastline we drive through villages like Fjällbacka, Hamburgsund, Bovallstrand och Hunnebostrand. When we arrived Kungshamn the lunch was served a few meters from the sea with Smögen in sight. Here we also take the now obligatory group photo.

After lunch and the photo-shoot we drove through Bohusläns hilly landscape to the final destination for the day; Vann Spa (“Water Spa”) at Färlevfjorden. Here we enjoyed rexaxing baths, good food and a nice atmosphere the entire evening in a true Saab spirit!

Sunday morning started with a dip in the sea, and a real breakfast. After that we checked out we headed in a convoy for Saabs home-town, Trollhättan. In Trollhättan we visited Saab Car Museum and tasted the Saab Ice Cream the museum sells.

Satisfied and happy the participants thanked for themselves, and the organizers Anna, Fredrik, Lena, Andreas, Jessica and Mikael thanked the participants for a great weekend and wished everyone welcome to Saab CabrioChallenge 2015, scheduled to Småland and with a end somewhere at the east coast.

SOTW from Wonderland Sollefteå

Sorry for the delay with this weeks Saab of the Week. But I think its worth the wait.

Hi Robin…
I just want to share my 9-5 with the rest of the Saab world.
These pictures are taken at the “Ångermannabron” up in Sollefteå, Sweden.
Its around 9.30pm local time and the sun is still shining..
Its a 2011 9-5 Aero TTiD with around 134000km on the speedo.
I have mounted one of the nicest rims I’ve ever seen, 9×20″ Vossen CVT with 245’30’20 GoodYear. I changed the springs as well, dropping the 9-5 by around 45mm.
I have also upgraded the brakes, at the moment its the +18″, and painted red. But I will change them for the brembo brakes soon. I’m very pleased with the look right now. I have tried different splitters at the front but have not found the right one yet…
Any questions about this car, don’t hesitate to ask.
Best regards Andreas Ronnback from “northland/wonderland”

I have placed a few more pictures of this beautiful 9-5 on  my flickr page

Afternoon all,

As the open day nears closer we have yet another surprise in store for you!

We have organised a mobile Dyno Dynamic 2 Wheel Drive Rolling Road to be attending our open day. The dyno will be set up in our yard and will be performing dyno tests throughout the day. The dyno will be fully covered as we all know we cannot rely on the weather…

This particular rolling road has a limit of 1200 BHP so I think we should all be ok. The result print out can show vacuum/boost/AFR/inlet air temperature.
We have 24 time slots available throughout the day. Each time slot will cost £35.00 and will need to be pre-booked and paid for directly through us before the event. Each time slot is for 15 minutes where we aim to make 3 power runs.
If you are interested in putting your Saab on the dyno, please get in contact with us direct on 01992 719280 to book your desired time slot and pay in full.

This is on a first come first serve basis so contact us quickly to avoid disappointment!

NEVS announces intention to lay off employees

©SAABSUNITED.COM
©SAABSUNITED.COM

This morning NEVS announces following in a press release:

Nevs announces intention to lay off up to 200 employees due to lack of work, as thedecision to re-start production will be further delayed.

Nevs has retained the permanent workforce for production since the production was stopped in the end of May this year. The reason for this has been that the company would be ready to quickly start up production, upon such decision.

The prerequisites for making a decision to start up production are to have long-term secured funding and a business plan that has been worked through together with a new majority owner.

The ongoing discussions on collaboration and ownership structure, which has not yetresulted in a binding agreement, indicates that the decision for a start-up of productionwill take time.

With this there is a redundancy of the workforce. Therefore, Nevs’ management has decided to hand in a notice of intention to lay off up to 200 employees to the Swedish Public Employment Service.

The terminations will take place in September in order to rapidly reduce the company’s costs during the reorganization period. This is a step in the reorganization plan that the administrator will present on the creditors meeting on October 8.

Nevs intends to retain the remaining staff to maintain the plant in good condition, to beprepared for the new production, after such a decision is taken, and to continuedeveloping new products.

SOTW, Marco’s flying NG900

Hi Robin:

Eight years ago and I keep enjoying this gorgeous SAAB 900NG 2.0T (MY96). The acquisition was a great opportunity that I jumped. I have performed with a number of trips and kilometres (over 70K) and I hope so many years to follow.

This new generation of SAAB 900 was not the bestseller acceptance of his predecessor, the legendary 900OG. The truth is that fewer units are on our roads and few of us still believe in blindly.

Along with good friends SAAB enthusiasts also, lately I’m encouraging courses at tracks days and their behaviour is remarkable. I also enjoy and keep two units of SAAB 9-3, but this model has stolen my heart.

I hope you share this veteran SAAB for your wonderful SOTW.

Greetings:
Marco Fernández

Neo Brothers – New 96 Project – **Classic With A Twist**

Our regular followers will recall that Nick and Andy were doodling again and playing with the idea of another 96 project.Just to bring everyone up to speed see below “the doodling”…Image

Although that may not be the final version at least it is the basis of a blueprint so that we can get on with it!

After scouring the 96 specialists we managed to source another 96 from our previous supplier John Saab (who we would like to thank). After a bit of haggling he turned up to our premises with the donor model…

The boys in the workshop have lovingly nicknamed it the “Green Machine” and they fully intend to lovingly restore it back to its former glory – with a twist!
