SAAB spirit @ timeattacknu.se series 2016 – contestant #1

Nordic Performance

I, like many other of us, have witnessed the true Saab spirit fade away amongst the enthusiasts, – one by one.

However, during these years, I have also witnessed pioneers in the field blossom and fight on through the storms.
And regardless of the speculations that may revolve amongst the community, there’s no doubt in my mind that these guys possess extreme knowledge and a forever burning passion for Saab.

What I’m talking about and what caught my attention is the Saab nuts at Nordic Performance in Norrköping, Sweden, and their custom built 9-3SS Aero. I’ve seen this build emerge from a mind so detailed, accurate and refined, that you’re still able see the typical lines and shapes we all know so well, despite the fact that this is an extremely modified car. The custom-built front and the cocky appearance overall gives you a good idea of what lies beneath the surface. So, hereby I would like to introduce this stunning and impressive build to the rest of the Saab world

Rolf Uhr, the driver of this racecar is no stranger to Saab. Ever since he got his driver’s license back in 1971, with a Saab V4 as his first car, – he has since then been faithful towards the car brand (with the only exception of two Opel vectra’s performed in Stcs). He’s pretty much done it all, rally, rallycross, and ice rally and racing, a constant involvement in the brand in many different ways. Rolf actually stopped active competing in 2002, but since he received an invitation to join timeattack in 2015, he’s been hooked. They acquired a 9-3SS that Saab themselves had built to run as a long-lap car, and it was equipped with a 1, 9TDI diesel engine. At the end of last season they decided to replace the engine with a custom built B207R engine, and they decided to go all the way up to Pro Class at timeattacknu.se series (meaning free modifications with only requirement of street legal tires). The first race this year is held at Kinnekulle racetrack, Sweden 3rd-5th of June.

“We’re sticking our necks out this year, and we are determined to place SAAB back on the map as a race car. And we’re planning to do that with our custom built and reinforced original Saab. “

Rolf Uhr, Nordic Performance

The party Saab

https://youtu.be/uANVG_2mQnQ

I recently stumbled upon a clip on facebook with a Saab 95 wagon that stood out from the crowd.
This Saab 95 2.0 wagon may look ordinary if it would drive past you during the day, but when darkness settles on the evening and the trunk lid is opened, this car turns into exactly what it’s called, – a #turbopartysaab. With it’s RGB LED bars pulsating in different colorsglowrope LED door inserts, smoke machine, PA speaker with 15″ subwoofer, – it turns this car into a party on four wheels.
Kenneth, the owner of this car, will cruise around on the Swedish roads with his party saab this summer and spread his joy and music around wherever he’ll go. Enjoy!

NEVS wants to hire more people

Our colleague Tim on saabsunited had an interesting conversation today with Mattias Bergman, ceo of NEVS in Trollhättan. Mattias Bergman and NEVS will annonce tomorrow that they want employ 40 new engineers to the factory, they also want to employ a number of buyers and other key personnel of the company.

So even though we got a false alarm about a New secret SAAB prototype” (which was most likely a Geely GC9) at the factory in Trollhättan, Nevs seems to have plans for further work within the walls of the plant in Trollhättan.

Geely GC9

Autoweek.nl posted an article based on a picture taken of one of their readers outside the factory in Trollhattanon June 22nd. And today the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet wrote an article about the same picture coming from the same source, with the headline  “Saabs new sectret prototype”. The article has created great discussions in the Saab world, but what we see in the picture is not a Saab, but more likely a Geely GC9.

We must not forget that NEVS currently rents out parts of the factory to other vehicle manufacturers in order to get an extra income until their own production has started.

Saab 9000 in the limelight

Monte Carlo Yellow SAAB 9000 Aero MY 1994
Monte Carlo Yellow SAAB 9000 Aero MY 1994

I had an interesting conversation with a fellow Saab enthusiast earlier today. And we discussed Saab 9000 and how this vehicle is now a nearly extinct unicorn these days. In addition, we both quickly agreed that Saab 9000 is one of Saab’s models that have been brought behind the spotlight and is somewhat a bit of a forgotten classic icon. My friend possesses not only a whole lot of knowledge about Saab, but he is also one of the few people I know with his Saab spirit still intact, his passion will always be there no matter what. He is also an extremely passionate 9000 owner, and one of the cars he owns is truly interesting on many levels. So let me introduce you to Johan Lööf’s MCY Saab 9000 Aero ‘ 94 and his story of how he found his dream car.

20150621_214249
Johan’s first meeting with his dream car, the MCY Saab 9000 Aero featured in the swedish car magazine ‘Bilsport’.
To take you to the beginning of this story, we have to rewind the time back to the year 2000, when I was 14 years old and the interest for cars started to increase rapidly. I bought myself my very first motor sports magazine fore a school trip, a swedish car magazine called “Bilsport”, more particularly Bilsport No.5. Saab was also highly interesting at that time (thanks to my brother). So I closely examined and eyed down all Saabs that were featured in the magazine, and the Saab that stood out the most was a small article with 2 small pictures of a Saab 9000 Aero in the color YELLOW!

Bilsport magazine article – “UNIQUE. Most people who sees Benny‘s yellow Saab 9000 Aero will react. “What the heck, a yellow AeroIt must’ve been repainted!? And sure enough, in fact, there wasn’t any produced yellow 9000 Aero’s – besides this one! Benny‘s copy is the only one in the whole world who was originally painted in the Monte carlo yellow color”

As a 14 year old boy my instant thought was “One day I’ll own a car like that”. But then again, we all have to admit that we’ve all had our own crazy teenage dreams. Time passed and I soon forgot all about the car in the magazine. Until one day in April 2006, when a friend of mine showed me a car that his brother was going to pick up. And his brother had already asked me if I was interested in buying a 9000 Aero since I was in the need of a car at that moment. When I got to see the sales ad for the car that he mentioned I flew off the chair. It was a MCY 9000 Aero! And I instantly recognized the license plate number. As soon as I got back home I searched through my old Bilsport car magazines and found the article I was looking for, I compared them, and sure enough, it was my teenage dream car that was up for sale! So there wasn’t any doubt about it, I was more than interested in buying my dream car. The day after this I took the car for a test drive, and it didn’t take long before I was the new owner for it.

“Yes, I’m the owner of a Saab 9000 Aero – and it’s Monte Carlo Yellow! – Johan Lööf”

The Aero Johan owns is a 9000 Aero MY1994, And it was first purchased by a woman from Luxembourg, and according to Saab automobile, this woman was working for the European Parliament. This car was sold as an IDS (International and Diplomat Sales) car, and we all know that this was something very exclusive. And the car was most likely repainted by a dealer before it was handed out to the customer. Though there’s no received confirmation on that issue yet. The car was later imported and registrered in Sweden 1998.
These are the following specifications for the car when it was commissioned:

    • 20150621_213927
      Delivery identification certificate (birth certificate)

      Model year: 1994

    • Sweden/SE specified car (that is, not a Europe/EU specified car).
    • Saab 9000 Aero
    • CS 5 door body, no sunroof
    • Left Hand Drive (LHD)
    • Engine: 2.3 Turbo (200 hp/294 Nm) with engine number B234L6A00R127081
    • Automatic transmission with transmission code FA43201198136
    • Exterior color: Cirrus White (color code 153)
    • Interior: Rocky Black Sports Interior
    • 16 Super Aero rim (3spoke) with 205/55 Z16 tires (probably Michelin MXM)
    • Double electric front seats with memory on the driver’s side
    • Double Airbags

During the years Johan has owned the car he has upgraded with installation of JT 3t” exhaust system with sport catalyst. Mounted H&R 40mm lowering kit and Bilstein Sport shocks. He also converted to manual transmission with Quife diff. He is currently in the process of fixing rust on wheel arches and trunk, and he has recently fixed the rust damage to the windsheild frame because it was in a very bad condition. He is committed to restoring the car to it’s former glory, including engine overhaul is in his future plans, and he has absolutely no plans or wishes to change the body colour. This car is in safe hands with it’s owner who is willing to do anything to save his extraordinary gem. We at saabsunited would like to thank Johan for sharing his story of his dream car, and we hope that he will be able to enjoy his very own unicorn for many years to come.

A special thanks to the Swedish police – Axel the stolen and found Saab 90

Axel Saab 90 '85
A picture of the police officers with Axel the Saab 90 ’85

My sister’s (though it’s registered on my mother) Saab 90 was stolen during the night to today in Skara, Västra Götaland Sweden (9th of October). We found out about it this morning at 06:00 when my sister called my mother. And of course we reported the car as stolen shortly after we received this call. My sister was devastated and heartbroken, and it didn’t take long before we arrived in Skara to start the search after the car. Unfortunately we couldn’t find him anywhere and started the trip back home again. On the road halfway between Skara and our home we glanced a cirrus white Saab, stranded right next to a river far out on a crops field. We pulled over and I ran towards the car, belive me, I ran like I’ve never done before. And there he was, – stranded on smaller hill of grass and rosehip bushes, beaten down, dirty and a very sad looking Axel.

The police shortly arrived and started examine the car. They were extremely nice and understanding, handling their job perfectly fine. They also had a great sense of humor which made the whole situation less depressive. After the examination they asked us how we were going to get the car out of there, and since we had no idea if a tow truck would be able to drive in the soaking wet soil, we couldn’t really answer their question. But these two lovely police officers actually offered to drive it home to us if we could get the car to start.
My mother turned the chewed up ignition on, and like a true champion he started right up – wounded but never defeated.

During these few hours we’ve been to a certified Saab dealer who did a full inspection and examination of the car.
It breaks my heart to say this, but the future for our beloved Saab 90 doesn’t look too bright right now.
We’ll have to wait for the insurance company’s verdict and just go from there.
But we will do everything in our power to save this rare and beautiful car, and we will never stop fighting for one of our Saab family member.

I want to thank the police officers who helped us through this heartbreaking journey. For doing a great job and for also helping us to drive Axel home to our house, with a police escort for maximum safety.

I also want to thank each one of my friends who helped me share the stolen report post on Facebook early this morning.
