I thought it would be somewhere else !!

On my last post, I wrote about the new head of communication, Fredirk Fryklund, not being in Trollhättan during the Saab Car Museum Festival on the second weekend in June. So, why can I say so?

During the last weeks the guy in charge of the social media accounts at NEVS has been repeating that they soon will show to the public what they have been working on.

I talked to somebody with a little bit more insight at NEVS, and he thought about the Auto Shanghai 2017, which will start on Friday, and media days are already ongoing, but after going through the floor plans, I wasn’t able to see NEVS anywhere.

Change in the management team at NEVS

Change in the management team of NEVS – New head of Communication & Public Affairs

Mikael Östlund will move on to a new assignment, as head of communication for The Swedish Association of Industrial Employers, leaving his position as NEVS’ Vice President Communication & Public Affairs.

Fredrik Fryklund is the new head of Communication & Public Affairs, and he will start his position at NEVS on May 2.

Will we see e-cars from Trollhättan earlier than expected?

Yesterday one interesting article appeared on the regional site P4 Vest of the Swedish radio corporation.

It is known that Tesla is searching for a production facility in Europe to achieve their production targets of 500.000 cars in 2018.

Different countries seem to be in the list, Spain because of the Sun, the Netherlands, because Tesla has already an assembly facility there or Germany, because Tesla has lately agreed to buy a German manufacturing specialist.

NEVS receives electric vehicle production license in China

The next step for NEVS to become a car manufacturer is done. NEVS has announced today with a press release that they have got one of those 10 precious production licenses for EVs in China.


The Chinese government has today approved NEVS’ application to start production of electric vehicles in its manufacturing plant in Tianjin.

– I am very grateful for the approval we now have received for the electric vehicle production license. It is an extremely important milestone for NEVS, which is based on 70 years of Saab long history. It means that we can take the next step to realize our vision – to shape mobility for a more sustainable future, says Kai Johan Jiang, chairman of NEVS.

The electric vehicle production license approved by the Chinese National Development Reform Commission (NDRC) is required in order to manufacture electric vehicles in China. NEVS is the first joint venture company with investors from outside China that is granted a New Energy Passenger Vehicle Project investment approval by NDRC.

NEVS’ manufacturing plant in Tianjin is under construction and planned to be up and running at the end of 2017, with the capacity of 200 000 electric passenger vehicles yearly.

The electric car industry is growing rapidly in China. NEVS plan is to develop a product portfolio of electric vehicles and mobility services globally, with China as the first and most demanding market for the coming years. The immediate plan is to deliver 150 000 9-3 Sedan electric vehicles to the partner Panda New Energy, a new energy vehicle leasing company in China.

After some talks with NEVS I’ve been told that we will see the NEVS 9-3 this year, but that production won’t start till the factory in Tianjin is ready, which is expected in the second half of the year.

In the mean time, the trials on the SAAB case have started in Sweden, but I’m sorry I don’t think that I could via ‘googletranslate’ give a correct version of whats happening.

What do we know so far?? (Update from China)

Chinese car news outlet (aoto.sohu.com) keeps repeating (different post from different authors) that the NEVS 9-3 will have a E-REV version with a range of 1200 km. This would not be available from the beginning but later on.

First, I’m quite sceptic if rumours come from only one site and second I can only tell what that Google translator tells me, so maybe got it wrong this time.

Anyhow, such a power-train option coupled with a good looking, in the best Saab tradition of form follows function, shell would make the car attractive to many people, maybe even to Angelo. 😉


It has been a long time ago since we last started discussing about cars that had to be build at Stallbacka. At that Time those cars were branded as SAAB but this time we are talking about the first NEVS car.

First of all I want to emphasise that all this is only the information that I’ve been able to collect from the internet and that none of those is in any way confirmed by NEVS.

NEVS clarified two weeks ago under which brand the cars they will sell in the future will have. I’ve said it then and I want to emphasise it now, this was an incredible possibility for them to present their first electric car, what we now know as the NEVS 9-3. But they decided to not to show anything, but instead of that they invited press and the community and so some information about the new car has been filtrated to the net.

Phoenix entered production, kind of.

The Saab PhoeniX concept was not understood by everybody when it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2011. But it was the concept that should have started a new phase in the life of Saab as a car company. It was quirky enough to be declared as a Saab, and some years later a company in southern Germany did imitate it at some point when they created their most futuristic car at that point.

A movement in motion

I really don’t have a clue what this means but it seams it to be their new claim, according to this video (3:03). It is a nice alliteration, but what do they want to say?

A new brand, a new logo and a new claim. The font for the logo looks very futuristic, but the new site and the new light font feels too clean too …. too similar to that company with the one fruit.

In an interview with Jonas Hernquist, sales and marketing director at NEVS, at the local newspaper he says what I think is the real reson to leave the name SAAB behind.

The second reason is that we are going to invest billions in products in the coming years, we want to do it in our own name and with our own brand, not a brand that we have borrowed and licensed from someone else.

So maybe it is not a bad idea at all. But despite the new logo and the new web site, and flags and lanyards I’m still missing one important thing. The car that will have that brand name.

A picture of a “so called” grill has been distributed with the press release, and yes it is not complicated to imagine this on the grill of a 9-3. But it would haave been nicer if they would have been able to not only present an empty shell, but also to show how are they goint to fill that shell. I mean, it must have been 2 or 3 moths ago when I read a very short article, that the development of the NEVS 9-3 was completed. Since then we have seen a black 9-3 with a hideous front grill, that converted the SAAB 3-piece grill into a normal 1-piece grill, but besides of that it looked just like the last SAAB 9-3, so I can’t imagine that this is the NEVS 9-3.

I wish them well, and I will follow all their steps as I’ve done in the past, but I think It will take me some time till I learn to call a car developed in Trollhättan a NEVS.

And BTW, on a video at the ttela.se site I’ve seen that the SAAB Wording at the factory is not there anymore.
