Six Gaps Cruise (New England) – BYOS
June 19, 2011
Jim C sends word that he is arranging a little
climbing driving event starting/ending in Rochester, Vermont. The event will be similar to last year’s Mount Washington trek. As you can see mentioned below, there is a new and improved video posted of that event.
Jim C explains:
On Sunday June 19th I’m leading another in series of New England Saab cruises which will follow a similar format to last year’s Saabs on the Summit trip to Mt. Washington, the fall Connecticut Cruise, and the run through Rhode Island held this spring. I’ve dubbed this one “Six Gaps and Gulf”. This 130 mile cruise will start and end in Rochester, Vermont in the heart of the Green Mountains. As you can see in the aerial view and elevation profile this is a series of non-repeating loops that includes six mountain gaps. For those of you not from New England that is what we Yankees call passes. Please note that these gaps are steep by NE standards, with some sections over 22%. Several are closed during the winter. There are also a few short packed gravel sections.
Total climbing for the route is an impressive 11,000 feet. Please take these conditions into consideration when deciding to participate. Your brakes, clutch, and cooling system should all be in good working order for this drive. As much as I’d love to do it in my ’73 Sonett that car is staying home! Much of this route is on narrow back roads. Depending on turn-out we may need to break up into a few smaller groups in order to be able to be able to pull over at scenic views to enjoy the vistas. We will have an opportunity to gather for a meal and group picture at some point.
I will be organizing several early morning rally points for the drive to Rochester once we have a better idea of where people will be coming from. They most likely will include Boston, Springfield and Manchester. It’s admittedly going to be a long day, but a long day in a Saab is better than a short day in the office. This really is some of the most unspoiled areas you will find in all of New England. If you have never been on one of the New England Cruises I’ve included a link to a video of last fall’s trip up Mt. Washington to give you a taste. I’ve set up a Facebook page that has more information. Interested people can also talk to me at Sa[email protected]. And hopefully you well get more information here as the date gets closer. Hope you can join us.
So there you go, just get in touch with Jim C, make sure your vehicle is up to snuff and have a blast driving through the nice countryside! All you have to do is Bring Your Own Saab.
