US Sales Strategy: The Price Is Not Right?

It’s no secret that I think one of the biggest keys to getting the US market on the right track is refining the current pricing strategy. Clearly something is off with the current model when Saab only sells 1/3 of Porsche’s volume. There are obviously other key issues to focus on like brand identity, confidence in Saab’s future, and model competitiveness; we’ll get to these in the near future. Today I’d like to focus our attention on how best to price Saabs in the current marketplace. Be sure to take the poll at the end of the article.

Press Release: Saab GB annouces new prices and specifications for 9-3 range.

  • 9-3 MY12 prices start from £21,495 OTR
  • Refreshed exterior and interior styling
  • Generous standard equipment levels across the range
  • Most powerful sub 120g/km Saloon and Estate on sale in the UK
  • Most powerful sub 160g/km petrol Saloon and Estate on sale in the UK
  • Most powerful zero first year VED Estate and Saloon in the UK
  • Reduced emissions and improved performance across the range

Saab GB is pleased to announce prices and specifications for the new and improved 9-3 model range which goes on sale in UK dealerships next month.

With a raft of improvements including two new petrol turbo engines, enhanced specification, lower emissions and improved performance, the 9-3 range has become even more attractive and competitive than ever.

More Equipment

Saab is renowned in the motor industry for offering high levels of standard equipment in its vehicles. Standard features across the range include alloy wheels, leather trimmed interior, heated front seats, park assist and Bluetooth phone integration system along with a host of safety systems including electronic stability programme, six airbags and Saab Active Head Restraints . All MY12 9-3 models now come with automatic dimming mirrors inside and outside the vehicle, electric folding mirrors and automatic rain sensor wipers as standard, a customer saving of £400.

There are two levels of specifications, SE and Aero.

Fresh looks

The MY12 9-3 range receives a fresh face and is distinguished by new front bumpers, ‘ice block’ headlamps and a new grille. At the rear, the Saab wordmark replaces badging on the chrome trim and all Saloon variants receive a boot-mounted aerodynamic spoiler.

Inside, the cabin features titanium metallic-effect trim around the instrument panel, gearshift moulding, doors and glovebox. SE models are fitted with Leather Appointed comfort seats, while Aero models feature new graphite-fibre around the instrument panel, gearshift moulding, doors and glovebox and Leather Sport seats with contrast stitching.

Class-leading fuel efficiency

Under the bonnet, two new 2.0-litre petrol turbo engines produce 163hp and 220hp and include direct injection, variable valve timing and twin-scroll turbocharging. Both of these engines will be available with a six-speed manual and automatic transmission. In terms of CO2 per unit of horsepower, the new manual 220hp 2.0-litre petrol 9-3 Aero Saloon and SportWagon raises the bar for efficient performance and is the most powerful sub 160g/km petrol engine vehicle on sale in the UK.

Like its sibling, the 9-3 1.9-litre manual twin turbo diesel line-up also offers class-leading CO2 emissions of just 119g/km in both the Saloon and SportWagon. The MY12 9-3 SportWagon can now claim the title of being the most powerful zero first year VED estate car available in the UK and is a perfect choice for company car users, and a cost-effective option for customers keen to reduce fuel consumption and their carbon footprint.

Competitive Pricing

Saab’s vehicle pricing has always been highly competitive and the new 9-3 range will offer customers an even greater value-for-money proposition.  With all the model year upgrades on offer; new interior and exterior enhancements, increased standard specification, powerful twin turbo diesel and petrol engines, low CO2 emissions and impressive fuel economy, customers will find the 9-3 range even more attractive than before.

Charles Toosey, Managing Director at Saab GB, said: “We are very confident that the 9-3 range will be a great success in the UK and will appeal to motorists wanting a high performance, low emissions vehicle, with high levels of standard equipment and competitive pricing.”

Saab 9-5 price comparison

Earlier today I posted about a review of the Saab 9-5 from Singapore. The review was notable not only because it was a good read for Saab owners. It also featured what I think might be the highest price payable for a Saab 9-5 – the highest I’ve heard of at least.

I mentioned that it would be interesting to compare the Singaporean price with others around the world. I know there’s a few countries with very high vehicle taxes, but how would they compare with Singapore?

“Joe” was kind enough to do a little research earlier today and post the results in comments. I thought I’d drop those results into a table and present them here.

[table id=10 /]

——

Here’s some visual representation to give you a view of the comparative prices at a glance.

I expect this will bring out some of the complaints about how cheap cars are in some countries compared to others. There are reasons for this, namely the aforementioned vehicle taxes (or lack thereof), which are occasionally balanced by costs in other areas (e.g. welfare, healthcare).

Bottom line: cars cost more in some places than others, but it’s just amazing to see how much that variation can be.

Thanks again to Joe for putting the information together.

Wednesday Snippets – Sonett love edition

Saab Cars, the official presence of Saab on Facebook, posted a picture and question earlier today.

Which Saab model is your all time favorite? And what’s the feature making it so special?

As you might expect, there were lots of references to the Saab 900 in comments (and a good number for the 99 Turbo, too, which was very pleasing).

What surprised me a little, though, was that out of 385 responses received, not one person gave the Sonett their ‘most loved’ status. That’s not to say that I would have either (99T or Viggen for me) but I would have thought that someone would be showing their love for the Sonett out of that many responses.

Peter DeLorenzo pours some cold water on the idea of any car company advertising during the Superbowl.

He lists eight car companies that are signed up so far – Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen – and a cost of around $4million for doing so.

——

Saabs United brought you the first information about Saab 9-4x pricing in mid-November. It was announced then that the base model would sell for $34,200.

A short time later, news came that the 9-4x Aero pricing would come in at a benjamin+change under $49K.

News has started circulating the interwebs about pricing for other models within the Saab 9-4x range.

Saab 9-4x Base – $34,205
Saab 9-4X Premium – $38,075

There are FWD and XWD variants with both of those models. The prices listed there are presumably for the FWD versions.

Saab 9-4x Aero is XWD only, at $48,835

These figures are for the US market and include delivery. They appear not in a press release, but on Autoblog. And yes, this is a mild irritant.

If I have a choice, I’ll take the bottom half of the Popular Colors paint chart, thanks.

I know stuff looks good in silver (and black), but still…..50% of cars globally for those two colors?

Saab 9-5 pricing – Greece

Here’s a market we don’t hear about too often.

Despite all the economic turmoil in Greece over the last few years, Chris Z tells me Saab are still popular there and had been doing OK.

  • Linear 2.0T 220hp Manual €45,250

SaabUSA website showing reduced Saab 9-5 price

With thanks to Trev, in comments, we have a small mystery about the price of the new Saab 9-5 in the US market.

When the car was announced for the US, the initial pricing was $49,990.

As you can see from the screenshot, below, the SaabUSA website is now showing an MSRP of $47,565.

What gives?

That’s the question I’ve asked of a couple of people at SaabUSA. I’ll report back when I get a response.

And by the way, if you’re a member of the Saab Club of North America, you’re entitled to another $500 off the purchase price of a new Saab, courtesy of an offer made by Saab Cars North America (maybe it’s an apology for using the SCNA initials!).

Visit the Saab Club North America website to download your voucher.

TTAC on Saab 9-5 pricing

Holy cow!

First DI.se are complimentary towards Saab and now I’m going to be complimentary towards an article on The Truth About Cars. What’s the world coming to?!

Michael Karesh runs the automotive website True Delta, which looks at vehicle pricing, placement and surveys subscribers about vehicle ownership and warranty issues (and if you’ve got a Saab and aren’t registered for his ownership surveys, you probably should consider it – more info is better info and his survey’s aren’t demanding in terms of time).

Michael also moonlights over TTAC and he’s put together an article looking at the pricing of both the new Saab 9-5 and the new Volvo S60.

It’s a very good comparison and shows that Saab have actually priced the car on par with their usual target market and below the equivalent German competition.

My advice – stop at the end of the article and don’t proceed to the peanut gallery in comments. As per usual, everyone’s auditioning for a whipcrack comedian job over there.

Thanks to various readers for the tip!
