Saab 9-5 can have better real life mileage *UPDATE*

Was it really a petrol powered 9-5 in the UK MPG Marathon?? Their own site says this “and the test model’s twin-turbo 190 hp version, which also comes in all-wheel-drive” Did they compete in Class 4 for diesel cars with CO2 emissions over 121 g/km?
In June Saab Spain showed in the ALD Ecomotion Tour that the Saab 9-5 TiD can have 17% better mileage values than the European test cycle (NEDC).

This time ALD and Shell have organized a similar event in the UK the 2011 MPG Marathon. Saab entered the UK event with a 9-5 Saloon Turbo4 Aero, which has already quite decent mileage values for its size.

The Saab 9-5 was driven by motoring journalist Iain Robertson accompanied by navigator, Robert Marshall, returning 43.81mpg, a 27.35% increase over the official combined fuel consumption figure of 34.4mpg and a place on the podium.

The new 9-5, More Tempting Than Ever.

As some of you may know, friend and fellow Saab enthusiast, Graeme Lambert, took delivery of a Saab 9-5 TTiD Aero as a long term test back in April of this year. Graeme is a journalist for the British Car Weekly Auto Express. He has just sent us his latest artical about life with the stunning 9-5 Aero which can also be seen in full online.

Latest deal price: from £23,487 to £35,707

Don’t worry, I’m not trying to sell our long-term 9-5. But if that was my plan, Saab has just made the job a whole lot easier. Although the firm is in short-term financial trouble at the moment, UK bosses’ latest move ensures the executive car is more attractive than ever.

Three into One

Tonight, our Saab club, South West Saab went fishing, well we went but the chat and food was far more exciting than the zero fish caught.

But,,,, three of the club members turned up in 9-5 Estates and here are a couple of pictures of the three faces and rears of the OG 9-5.

Changes are slight but the three 9-5’s are so different.

Testing the Pressure in a 9-5 TTiD

The Zero Hero snippets

Saab UK had PR campaign were they called the 119g 9-3 TTiD 180 the Zero Hero because the Vehicle Excise Duty (the vehicle taxes) was equal to zero because of the low CO2 value.

Today Saab UK has presented the new Zero Hero, the Saab 9-5 TiD4 MY 12, with manual transmission. It will also, like the 9-3 TTiD, be exempted of VED because of the low CO2 figures, 125 for the Saloon and 128 g/km for the SportWagon.

Friday quick and safe snippets

First off the bat, is svd.se which now features a review comparing the 9-5 to the A6. They deduct points for interior quality but comment on the 9-5’s road holding qualities as “best in class”. I am a little surprised that they compare fuel economy seeing as the 9-5 comes equipped with more horsies and torque. That is the only category where the 9-5 loses, yet they only reward it a score of three (Audi gets five) in their summary. Nice interior apparently beats the nice feeling you get from piloting the car through the ‘twisties.

Thanks Thomas for the tip

Pam, our on the spot IIHS spotter, let us know that IIHS has completed another test of the 9-5. This time they have put a poor unsuspecting 9-5 through a heavy side-impact. Designed to test what happens if a car gets struck by a SUV, the 9-5 holds up nicely, though IIHS notes there is a possible chance of rib fractures. Adding side curtain airbags in the rear helps the new 9-5 improve upon the score set by its predecessor.

It will be interesting to see the 9-5’s rollover score. That test only provided the Audi A6 with an ‘Average’ score and that is one event where Saab have a long history of success thanks to “on the roof” Carlsson. Which will bring to question those reviews that typically award the A6 the same safety score as the 9-5.

On the lighter side of things, a nice classic Saab 900 Turbo makes a cameo appearance in the Beastie Boys Fight for Your Right (Revistied) video. Jamie, who provided us with the link calls the cameo “unlikely”, but I am not sure what he meant by that. (BTW: That video is probably not safe for work. Public urination is frowned upon in the workplace I believe — proceed at your own risk)
