Saab 93 tourism in the United Kingdom (1959)

Bilturist i Storbritannien (1959)

While checking my twitter feed this morning I came across a video posted by @skandix of a couple taking a driving holiday in the UK in a Saab 93. You see the 93 being loaded onto the ferry in Norway and then the tour itself. A saab 93 must have been a very rare sight in those days.

I’ve put a direct link to the website where you can see the video in all its glory here

A big thank you to Svenska Filminstitutet for sharing this wonderful film.

SOC GB – a pristine Saab 93

This could well be the closest I’ve ever been to an old Saab that looks like it’s just rolled off the factory floor. Hopefully these photos will show enough of the detailed work that’s gone into this car to do it justice, though I fear not.

I saw this car at the Saab Owners Club GB annual event in Bath last month and it’s fair to say that it stole the show. I suspect it does that almost everywhere it goes.

This is a Saab 93 and what’s amazing about the owner of this car is that a) he did the complete restoration of this car himself, and b) apparently he’s got three other classic Saabs in just as good a condition!

I’m short on words when it comes to this car, so I’ll just let the pictures tell the story. Click to enlarge and enjoy.

Old Saabs showing up on Flickr

I neglected to show this when I received it, but better late than never! This came in from Peter Backstrom at the Saab Museum last week.
A 1957 model Saab 93 has been participating in Mille Miglia this year. It’s being driven by the former Saab executives Hans-Göran Persson and Sten-Åke Aronsson.
The car itself, owned by Lars-Göran Persson, is in a beautiful original condition and the 750cc engine is tuned by the 2-stroke supremo Bengt-Erik Ström, who was once an engine mechanic at the Saab Competition Department.
The picture, below, shows the car being loaded before departure to Brescia, Italy, after some final adjustments in the Saab Car Museums workshop:

Some photos have popped up on Flickr overnight, of not only Persson’s Saab 93, but of another Saab 93 competing in the Mille as well.
Click here for the full folder.
In addition to the Mille Miglia coverage, someone named Willemsknol has posted some incredible old Saabs on Flickr today.
I’m not sure where this collection is being held, but I’d love to visit!!!
Here’s just one of them. A classic 2 door Saab 99 Turbo.

Sunday Saab Flickr Images

I haven’t done a Flickr dump in a little while, so here’s a nice Sunday mix of images. Some beautiful Saabs here and some sad ones, too.
Click on any of the photos to enlarge.
Our unofficial Saab ambassador to the UK, Robin M, has done it again. If I’m counting correctly, this is the sixth Saab purchased by a family member or friend in recent years.
The wheels got thrown in as an extra. Nice!! Photo by Robin.
I’ve never seen one of these before. A promotional Saab Rubik’s Cube. Looks like late 1990s or early naughties.

When you see a Saab 900 in this color, it’s normally a friction tester. This one’s on the track, however, and it’s looking good! Photo by Ivandif

Saab 93 oldtimer video

Etienne and Golfhunter have tracked down a fantastic video featuring the classic Saab 93 from the 1950s and early 1960s.
The video is in German (I think) but don’t let that put you off. The pictures speak more than 1,000 words. Apparently there might be an overdub in English some time in the future.
If you’re not in to oldtimer Saabs at all, then you should be. The company’s identity is built on them. If you’re still reluctant, then there’s two reasons why you should click through and give 5 minutes of your life to this video:
1) To see how an old-time Saab window wound down. I remember being amazed when I first saw this on a Saab 95.
2) To hear the Saab advertising jingle near the end. Priceless!
The Saab 93 is a beautiful car in it’s own right. I especially love the red piping they used to use on the vehicle. Uber-classy. They could bring that piping back today and I’d be a happy camper.
Watch the video now over at Saabhuy. I guarantee you’ll be singing the jingle for the rest of the day
Get a Saab in your life and then you’re really living…..
